YMCA - Kids: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Ola has been very helpful and professional
Negative experience: The roof leaks and the air-conditioning is old and hardly ever works properly They have alot of unsupervised kids running around getting in your way No real experienced trainers they just hire kids out of college to save money. Believe me you're better off at a modern gym
Negative experience: Maxwell Heights, Y Day Camp, is the worst camp my kids have attended in the last 10 years. The manager does not care at all and will ask you to pick up the kid who is not enjoying the activity they propose. My child said they were pushed to participate in activities they do not like at all, science camp was at the level of the kindergarten, and even soda acid volcano was not appropriately done; you actually should try to fail this type of science experiment. They were not allowed kids to use water slides in the water park, not allowed to swim and were not offering even the option to sit quietly alone. If you think they will teach your kid science, you are wrong; the level was very bad. They kept kids inside the hot school the entire week (except one day) in the gym with not much to do and almost no to very little time outside in the sun. Staff were not well trained and had no idea how to entertain kids properly. The price was twice more than in good camps at BGC ( the best ) or CIty of Oshawa camps. The staff do not care about the kids, and people have no educational background nor attempt to try different strategies to keep the kids engaged. The kid was saying this was torture, not like camp to enjoy for the kid. The staff needs training on EDI how to work with children with different needs. They ruined the experience for my child, who has mild ADHD and made him furious. The manager kept calling to pick up the child who was not following the direct instructions of the counsellors. No other tactics were tried, and when the child asked to be left alone, I was called to pick up the child. I have two children and have never encountered such ignorant and untrained staff.
Fantastic experience: I love this location, has a huge gym area, pool is clean and too busy. Staff are kind and professional. :)
Fantastic experience: Went there for a year. Friendly staff, good, clean equipment in the gym. Can recommend.
Fantastic experience: My husband and I both had a Plus Membership here when we lived in Oshawa. The change rooms were great with both a steam room, a hot tub, and towel service. Peter was a wonderful personal trainer. We both loved that our membership helped to subsidize memberships for others who otherwise couldn’t afford a gym membership. The YMCA is a great community minded organization.
Negative experience: Night staff are very rude and unreliable!
Fantastic experience: Honestly, I'm tired of the fake accounts here. I've known this place for years. I had 2 personal trainers over the years here. I got no complaints here.
Positive experience: Visited this facility today for a quick workout. The gym is medium sized but had lots of equipment. I especially liked the fact that they had cleaning sprays at every machine and a cloth to wipe it down once you have finished. The gym and change rooms are very clean and had Towles and other toiletries for use. The steam room was a good size but the benches in there are tiled so I didn't find it comfortable. I would definitely work out there again in the future.
Fantastic experience: Receptionist very kind
Fantastic experience: Really we run programs for all ages
Fantastic experience: Toddlers swimming classes are the best.
Negative experience: Can never get in touch with anyone to discuss services.
Fantastic experience: Excellent facilities and great staff!
Positive experience: Decent sized weight room and a large gymnasium and pool
Fantastic experience: Friendly helpful staff with great facilities!
Negative experience: Another complaint about "Ola" i couldnt beleive the anount of disrespect.
Fantastic experience: It was a great experience thank you so much and best regards.
Negative experience: Only complaint was the man at the front desk Ola. Super rude and absolutely no help at all.
Fantastic experience: I love everything about the YMCA! The friendly, non judgemental environment. Everyone feels welcome here!
Fantastic experience: Quite busy last night but good to see kids having fun in a good physical environment
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff and a big clean facility. Great programs for kids.
Fantastic experience: Our kids are happy with their swimming lessons. The staffs are nice and caring.
Negative experience: Too expensive considering 85% of the classes are taught by volunteers. I went to the Y for more that 5 years and price kept going up and up. When I finally quite it was $55 a month. I went to a better gym for $40. I heard the fired all the older staff (ones that actually knew what they were doing) and hired a bunch of young kids to replace them to save costs but for what they were charging I couldn't believe it. No wonder that place was a ghost town on Monday nights when it used to be packed.
Negative experience: I would not recommend now. I was a member many years ago and loved it. Now classes times are not geared to the working classes. Geared to seniors which yay they are able to go during the day and for youths. Come on how many people are curling? AQUAFIT! THE BIGGEST JOKE GOING. I can never get into a class no matter what time the class is, the ones that sign up cancel their spot about 15 minutes, so you want me to be at your beck and call, no thank you. Let me tell you what happens the rare time when I have been graced by the Y to go. There is a group of men who have no interest in aquafit, they stand there at the back of pool and yap the whole time. WTH...so my spot is being given to people that just want to sit in a pool and have social time? Another incident I experienced, I get they can only have so many in the people pool , HOW dare you not sign up! Or little Suzie is shamed as she is asked to leave the people and everyone staring as she makes the walk of shame to the change room. BACK TO CLASSES..WHY not have a body fit or total fit at night chair yoga at night. I am asked to make suggestions, those green papers go filed in G! If your looking for classes the high price to fund the Y is a rip off if you work 9 to 5. If your using the gym..mmmmm still better and cheaper places. I have cancelled as the YMCA has made changes not for the better, but for the worse. Maybe pay professionals to lead classes and not depend on your volunteers to run them. They work hard and can only do so much. I get the understaffed situation...but that excuse can only go so far. This is my experience and opinion.
Negative experience: Man named Ola at the front desk was very rude, my wife asked if there was anyone able to help her and he just laughed and continued on whatever he was doing on his computer. This was our first time here and we will not be returning
Negative experience: Enrolled my 7 year old in the Children’s swim otter class (first level) and at first it seemed great! Instructor was super nice, child seemed happy and place is clean. Then the 4th class before the end of the lessons, they tell me that my child has to redo the same entry level cause he’s not kicking straight and to register again! He has 3 more classes to improve so why has he failed? Seems like a complete money grab! The worst part is that the instructor is so misleading, tells my son he was doing a great job by giving him high fives every time she asked him to do something and then fails him! I understand positive reinforcement helps build their confidence but there’s a difference between that and being fake. The entry level is just to get you familiar with the water and the very basics with flotation devices. Why do we have to redo this level because you don’t like the way he kicks? He’s 7 and doing exactly what he was supposed to: get familiar with the water, jumping in, head underwater, front and back float and pool safety. Instead of praising him for not doing it the way you want, why didn’t the instructor correct him and show him what she wanted him to do? We observed every class and thought my son was doing great by the praise and high fives, and if we took it that way, how else would a 7 year old. If I saw that my child did not do well and he genuinely should not have passed, I would agree with the instructors assessment. However, I strongly disagree and feel that the classes are overpriced for incompetent instructors and a complete cash grab!
Fantastic experience: The staff are friendly, approachable, and sincere - a stark contrast from the overtly commercial GoodLife Gyms. Special shoutout to my personal trainer Josh, who's patience, knowledge, and professionalism have positively contributed to my fitness journey.
Positive experience: Really good facility with almost all amenities, gym equipments are definitely due for an upgrade and the swimming pool has a really odd scent unlike other indoor pools.
Fantastic experience: Absolutely amazing.
Negative experience: Closed too early on weekends
Fantastic experience: Love it
Positive experience: The locks are to Damm expensive in the vending machine
Fantastic experience: Clean facilities, friendly staff and patrons
Fantastic experience: Great establishment, nice people that work there, make you feel welcome
Fantastic experience: We come here a lot. How do I get water out of my ear?
Positive experience: Clean and convenient but I wish the hours were a little bit longer.
Positive experience: It's pretty good tbh 3 stars because the pool is very salty but it's overall really nice in my opinion.
Negative experience: I've been coming here for years, but I'm strongly considering cancelling my membership. This place used to be great, but it's been steeply declining over the past five years or so. This place used to be packed in the evenings, now it's practically deserted. I'm not sure who is in charge of the Y pricing and programs, but they should be fired. This place is extremely expensive now. The gym equipment is just ok, lots of worn or broken equipment though. They seem to have cancelled many of their programs and got rid of most of their staff. They have severely cut back the open hours of the facility to the point where I can hardly use the membership on weekends. I mean there is another gym around the corner from here that is a fraction of the cost, has a larger selection of better equipment, and is open 24/7. Not sure why the Y doesn't seem to be able to offer similar services when they are charging 3 to 4 times the cost of similar gyms in the area. The only redeeming feature of this place is the children's swimming programs are pretty good... But, they recently jacked the price for classes (which are not included in the already expensive family membership prices) way up, almost doubled the cost! If it weren't for having kids in swimming lessons here, I would definately cancel and go elsewhere.
Fantastic experience: GREAT PEOPLE...this place has been AMAZING, my partner and I joined during the height of 'The Vid' but we have always felt safe going here, as it is super clean and mask wearing/sanitizing is enforced. The showers are clean and private, and the changerooms offer so many lockers, they have hairdryers, lots of benches and mirrors. The gym itself has enough equipment that you don't have to wait to use a machine and it feels like a safe, non judgmental space. Okay now that the boring stuff is covered, let me go over what made this gym so great...THE PEOPLE. From day one, everyone was so incredibly kind and welcoming. Jake, who is a personal trainer and supervises the gym area is so friendly, he is willing to help anyone learn, even if its just understanding how to use a machine. There is also several different people who have greeted us to look over our vaccine passports/check ID, who we always look forward to seeing as they are just so kind. I wasnt able to catch everyone's names but there is, Ally who makes any paperwork stuff so easy and straightforward, Natalia who will always greet us with a smile, a really friendly man who always called us 'Team' , and so many more lovely individuals. We sadly have to leave the Oshawa location, as me and my partner are moving, but I would recommend joining to anyone who is interested! THANK YOU
Fantastic experience: The rock.wall was such a well used assest, and shamefully there had. It been a date set for its reintroduction to membership. I for one enjoyed both its use and guiding newcomers through its basic use. Great feature for a great gymnasium - anticipating its reintroduction!
Fantastic experience: Loved it
Fantastic experience: I just started foing to the YMCA and I am very happy with the way they are going about things during covid-19
Fantastic experience: I drop my kids there and they come home happy I think the staff are excellent however it's hard for some people to adjust to some environment because of there expectations but life have its challenges so my advice is treat other's the way you would wanted to be treated a little respect could go a long way be positive at all times.
Positive experience: Not a bad place, no activities for kids under 10 years! Limited classes and very limited capacity
Fantastic experience: Just a family affair
Negative experience: The YMCA is okay
Positive experience: Clean and full of fun activities, staff is great and it’s perfect for all ages
Positive experience: I myself have bean a member for several years as well brampton before that ,but oshawa ymca has bean a part of my life that i will say has saved my life its like this mind body and soul in harmony and i have allway,s appreciated the staff their smiles alone are motivational to say the least i love the ymca thank you and god bless..
Fantastic experience: Clean and staff is very helpful and friendly. I’m a teen and enjoy all the programs they offer here.
Negative experience: Since I was a kid in the 80s, I found this to be a problem for me since I am a special needs person. Those counselors are not something I shall tolerate nor do those boys made such uncalled abusive and threatening statements not knowing when to stay away from me. Since I am very displeased over this matter since the 80s as a kid, it is as worst I ever had in my entire life. Please protect all special needs kids over this!
Negative experience: Sent my daughter here for one week of summer camp. Was $300 a week and only could afford one week, which is for obvious reasons, 300 a week!!! she was SO excited to go as she had not been out with kids since march! She has a stuffy nose in the morning which is normal for her, and on going which resolves in a hour after waking. They would not let her go inside. I understand Covid measures but this is ridiculous, I guess kids with any allergies are screwed, even though the symptoms state "unexplained new cold like symptoms" which hers are NOT.. I even spoke to my doctor and she said she agreed its ridiculous! Will NOT be returning. Did not even receive any sort of extra week or refund!
Positive experience: Not the best but also not the worst. They have some caring workers who really care about kids but others lack patience. Any little issue they call you from work to come and carry your child making you lose hours at work. They should learn to manage the kids.
Fantastic experience: I love the YMCA. It is a family friendly gym with many programs for any age. They have a fun and inclusive karate program.
Fantastic experience: Great place for the whole family.
Fantastic experience: Best swim lessons for the price.
Fantastic experience: Great people and great equipment, workouts and pool
Fantastic experience: A really nice place for kids to play and experience the Oshawa community
Fantastic experience: Great place!!!
Fantastic experience: I love the "Y".Friendly staff, lots of workout space & machines.
Fantastic experience: Great facilities. Updated and clean! Love this place.
Fantastic experience: Awesome place for all ages and the staff are extremely friendly. This place is always clean and happening !!!
Negative experience: This place is a tital waste of time after spending 15 mins trying to get a park I was told that I need to sign up (pay a registered fee of $100) in order to use the 14 days trail that they sent me super annoyed I wastwa a full hours of my tine
Fantastic experience: The child care facility here is great, wish they had some more updated toys, but its hard for them im sure! Lots of programs to access here, never have problems finding parking when i come here, although i hear some people do, may just have the luck!!
Negative experience: Joined this gym and how much the price was monthly was okay they said they cannot take payment from my bank but somehow they can still charge me each month even though head office called me told me I’d only have to pay the monthly fee the one time I go in and it’s triple the monthly fee I had to go in and also signed documents to stop payment at YMCA the front desk has no answers for you on whatever your being told to do over the phone from head office the Communication is beyond outta this world it’s poorly operated if I could give no stars I would.. the only thing I can say about the YMCA is the Group programs are a lot going on those ladies work hard with the kids and are very involved with each kid in play group I enjoy talking with them and seeing them engaged with the children that’s the best thing about the YMCA is the play group the ladies that work them all are awesome kind, caring and respectful to others I highly recommend going to the after programs or before they are good for the children!!
Negative experience: Lifeguard refused my 8 yr old gr daughters swim test from the big pool on saturday after the same guy passed her a month ago,, and she's passed 3 other swim to survive tests in other municipalities including her grade 3 swim to survive test. Something to do with her style, i was under the impression it's "swim to survive" not swim for style, obviously won't be back and Def won't recommend.
Negative experience: The family packs really should include kids classes, and staff at the front desk need be well versed in program requirements prior to calling memberships and or services. I was sold a summer family membership so as to take advantage of some mom n tot swim classes etc. Only to find out after my money had been taken that A. My infant was still to young and B. The classes would have to be paid for separately. I felt lied to and robbed as the person whom sold me membership knew my intentions and reasons for getting said membership in the first place. I will not be returning.
Fantastic experience: Love love love the YMCA. It's so comfortable and lots of options. I don't feel on display. Everyone is just there to do their own thing.
Fantastic experience: I love the Y!!!
Fantastic experience: Great place for healthy living.
Fantastic experience: the gym is very clean and has many good machines. the programs for the kids are engaging and fun. overall it has a familly oriented feeling and is a great place to bring oyur kids, or just to workout.
Fantastic experience: YMCA keep children out of trouble. Worth the membership. Staff are friendly and nice.
Fantastic experience: Swim lessons from heaven, my year old is a lot more confident innthe water
Fantastic experience: Awesome place to take the kids
Positive experience: Straight forward. There's a pool, a track, machines and classes throughout the day. Staff are helpful.
Positive experience: Great staff and lovely accepting atmosphere.
Fantastic experience: Keeps me grounded. Physically and emotionally.
Fantastic experience: Great Pool & many Rowing Machines
Positive experience: Straight forward. There's a pool, a track, machines and classes throughout the day. Staff are helpful.
Fantastic experience: Nice facility with lots of recreational programs and sports/fitness activities too
Negative experience: Love the openess bright cheerful, great group classes. Price is steep for those who only have part time work so Im not able to become a member.
Fantastic experience: Great place to workout and bring the kids for swimming lessons, dance classes etc. Love how friendly and helpful the staff are. Dont forget Friday night is free for all youth!
Positive experience: This is so expensive place to go, you need member
Fantastic experience: Amazing staff❤❤❤
Negative experience: $15 to go for a swim. Never again.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful and full of diverse people.
Fantastic experience: Great staff and also very helpful
Fantastic experience: It has all the fitness programs.
Fantastic experience: Great gym, great pool. Friendly staff
Fantastic experience: This is the best place to work-out or play basketball or volleyball I love it here
Fantastic experience: Very friendly reception all my needs in the change room and very very sanitary
Fantastic experience: Great member the community. The Y has programs for families of all sizes, including 1.
Fantastic experience: I want to go to the Y.M.C.A. I feel energized every time I'm in the building and staff show a lot of care.
Fantastic experience: Well equipped weight room, not too crowded, no roid-rage attitude here. My favourite place to work out.
Positive experience: Been going to the Durham YMCA for about 5 years. Great programs for kids and adults as well as a good place to make new friends!
Positive experience: Decent place. Speacially teen night. Swimming is average. Most of the staff are cool.
Negative experience: Used to have a more sane price structure. No more early morning yoga classes. Family membership no longer make any sense. Hopefully they'll change.
Positive experience: Personal trainers are great and it's good that kids and parents can go at the same time. Not impressed however that fees just keep going up and up. I pay a membership fees and now they also want to charge per kids drop in program. Very unhappy. Supposed to be a family community centre and now it's to expensive for average families to attend. Such a shame.
Fantastic experience: Always willing to help
Fantastic experience: I have been here since 2006, and what can i say? It's amazing.
