Waterloo Regional Boxing Academy (WRBA) is a non-profit organization sanctioned through Boxing Ontario and the Canadian Amateur Boxing Association. We use the sport of boxing to give the youth of Kitchener-Waterloo a chance to excel and make positive changes in their lives.
John was born and raised in Timmons Ontario but has been living in Waterloo for the past 20 years. He is a level two NCCP coach. He started coaching at WRBA in 2013 where he was the head coach for the boxing 101 program for boxers who were new to the sport. He loves coaching and seeing the kids come into the gym and giving it their all. He loves the sport of boxing so much he got married in the ring to his wife Jen.
Nimia Started with the boxing club as a parent supporting her sons with their activities, and then eventually joined as a member herself. Nimia then saw an opportunity to help out the club by bringing her technical work skills in to the not so technical environment of the boxing club. She has been responsible for dealing with internet and computer related issues, creating and managing e-mail lists, organizing registration and participant lists, processing of monthly dues and issuing receipts and tracking funds from fundraising events to name just a few. Her organizational skills have helped to the pressure of administrative duties off the coaching staff to allow them to do what they do best. It is not easy to find volunteers to do this type of work with a club because often it is a thankless job. Nimia is now part of the Board of Directors as Waterloo Regional Boxing Academy's Director of Finance.
I was born in Toronto and move to Kitchener in 1976. Soon afterwards I found myself at the Kitchener Police Boxing Academy under the guidance of Hook McComb. As an 18 yr old I soon found the passion in Coaching and began coaching with my mentor Arnie Boehm and entered into the National Coaching Certification Program. As Head Coach of WRBA I had the pleasure of working with a well established Board of Directors under the leadership of Harry Curnew and Harrison Rees. I would go on step down as Head Coach and accepted a role in the Board as a Director. Currently I am the President. I am happily married to Natalie and the proud father of one daughter Raquel. I am in my final year as a police office with the OPP and plan to retire in 2019.

Waterloo Regional Boxing Academy: Opinions
Negative experience: Horrible experience trying to sign my son up for class not from the gym but the volunteers responding to emails. The sad part is my son was waiting since November on a wait list and simple misunderstanding turned into such a horrible email exchange… I couldn’t believe the unprofessionalism!!!
Good morning Laurie, I’m sorry you feel this was not a positive experience. However, due to our incredibly high demand and waitlist, when not attending or replying to available spots, it forces us to remove you from the waitlist to allow for others to participate.
Fantastic experience: Nice facilities, great organizers and coaches. Observation area is above and out of the way which is great.
Fantastic experience: The staff here are amazing to watch as they coach kids and adults to push themselves in boxing activities. So encouraging and able to get the best from every person who comes through the door
Fantastic experience: Excelente
Negative experience: Poor business practices on behalf of the coach in charge of responding to emails. The only gym in SWO I had an unpleasant experience dealing with.
Fantastic experience: Cool
Positive experience: Great place! Great people! Boxing is a great way to get in shape
Fantastic experience: Excellent coaches and very clean gym.
Fantastic experience: Excellent facility with fantastic coaches! Our family would highly recommend WRBA to anyone.
Fantastic experience: Amazing gym with friendly and encouraging staff and coaches. Would recommend to anyone looking for a motivating workout and a caring community
Negative experience: I really like the training room, but it really interferes with training when the coaches scream. They are very rude, when you make at least one mistake, they already start screaming. This is very unpleasant and humiliating.
Fantastic experience: The coach’s there actually care about the kids and they don’t work there for money, they work there to get kids to experience what they exper
Fantastic experience: Love the gym love the staff love the community.
Fantastic experience: Can't say enough good things about this gym. Excellent facility, excellent coaches, perfect mix of boxing technique and general conditioning.
Fantastic experience: Great place to learn boxing and to get fit
Fantastic experience: Amazing program and coaches. I would recommend WRBA to anyone looking to get or stay in shape and learn boxing at the same time.
Fantastic experience: Good
Fantastic experience: Great coaches, great facility!
Fantastic experience: WRBA. Teaching the science not the violence. The club is run well and the coaches are welcoming.
Negative experience: Been calling to make enquiries, nobody ever picked all 8 times
Fantastic experience: I put my son in boxing and he loves it. The trainers are tough on you and they do yell, but they are also kind and supportive. They motivate people to push themselves beyond what limits they have set for themselves. I am not sure about all the trainers, but our favorite trainer John I know donates his time before he works nights. You would never know he does it for free, because of how passionate he is and how serious he takes it. I cannot say enough good things about Waterloo Regional Boxing Academy. We are grateful this organization exists!
Fantastic experience: Awesome
Negative experience: Hated it there. They just yell at you. And there's almost no boxing at all just running.
