While there is a place for a TENS unit or a hot pack (it's warm and feels really nice when it's -1000 degree outside right now!), it has no place in the recovery algorithm in something as complex as a spinal surgery with complications and requires a lot of education and experience to navigate. You captured the essence of our visit together, although I would be remiss if I didn't elaborate on our thorough discussion about the non-surgical options, which are typically exhausted before considering more aggressive means (injection/surgery). Unfortunately - as we discussed at length - sometimes these options don't get you exactly what you're looking for out of life, so we "laid out all the cards on the table." We talked about what you can expect out of conservative management versus more aggressive management, and I should emphasize that I did warn you about pre-surgical and post-surgical obligations and recommended that you follow-up closer to home with a trusted therapist for your recovery. Surgery (and pain!) are not easy things to recover from, and we want to make sure that the winter drive is just as much taken care of as your return to function. After all, we want to make the process as seamless as possible for you, and that sometimes goes beyond just the strengthening process and sometimes even includes the commute! I am so glad you took a lot away from our appointment and I thank you for being honest and straightforward with your expectations and your questions! Thank you for trusting me with your care.
