Our comment from FitFit Canada about Saddletowne YMCA:
Welcome to Saddletowne YMCA, a community hub in Calgary dedicated to promoting health and wellness. Visitors have expressed their appreciation for the well-maintained facilities and a wide range of activities including swimming, basketball, badminton, and a comprehensive gym experience.
Notable highlights include:
- Friendly and knowledgeable staff who are committed to creating a safe and enjoyable experience for all members.
- A variety of exercise classes and sports programs that cater to different interests and age groups.
- A vibrant atmosphere that encourages social interaction and community engagement.
However, some users have raised concerns about various aspects, highlighting areas for improvement:
- Issues with the cleanliness of change rooms and some sports facilities.
- Limited availability of gym equipment and sports facilities, resulting in overcrowding during peak hours.
- Shortened operating hours, which can be inconvenient for those with a standard work schedule.
Despite these challenges, many visitors have had positive experiences, especially with personal trainers who provide tailored support. Saddletowne YMCA continues to be a valuable resource for fitness and community activities, though potential improvements could enhance the overall experience.
Saddletowne YMCA: Opinions
Positive experience: Great
Negative experience: The front desk literally watching nba games while working. Volunteers on their phone the whole time. Scheduled programs getting canceled last minute. My first time visiting this branch and it seems like it's on a steep decline
Fantastic experience: Great experience playing soccer here
Positive experience: I like swimming here but your change room is disgusting the curtains are starting to turn yellow and it’s gross
Negative experience: This place is actually pretty bad in terms of actually getting gym equipment. They have a habit of deleting gym equipment, an example is chest flys which they reduced to one machine. They even have only one gym, one race track and one fitness room which get booked by seniors and high school kids so you’re stuck fighting for the little equipment they have
Negative experience: The hours of opening and closing are terrible for anyone who works an 8am-4pm job. There is no reason why their hours of operation are significantly less than the other facilities. Every other YMCA facility is open from 5:30am-10:00pm or 6:30am-10:00pm except for Saddletown. As it stands, online, Saddle town is only open from 8am-4pm most days and are fully closed on Sundays.
Negative experience: This place used to care about people so much during the pandemic, but now staff and volunteers are like running a political campaign. Makes promises they can’t keep. Hires people who can work like a faulty machine.
Negative experience: I have visited this place as a drop in though out 5 years now. The changing rooms stink like it hasn’t been cleaned up for months. The sports programs have been terrible experience for me because of the staff and volunteers. They are constantly standing around doing nothing talking to each other instead of coaching the kids. This year is worse than last year. Wouldn’t recommend ever going to this place.
Negative experience: So we are waiting for like 40 minutes for badminton and the courts are not available the day camp kids are don't let's us play and now we have to leave the YMCA and the basketball players keep playing in gym 2 and so we can't play
Negative experience: Stay away from camping program for kids, it is a scam. They require 14 days cancelation. I register 2 days ago, and they still charge 25% cancelation fees. This is unbelievable.I don't recommend them at all.
Negative experience: I was thinking about this place today . I have been living in BC for about 9 years now & before that I was in Taradale and went to the Saddletown Y . I see the pool issues havent changed and in fact slid down hill . Its unsafe ( and now filthy or so I read ) . Dont go there unless you want to risk drowning . I know before it was lane swiming and you would think some one with a modicum of sense would allow one person per lane . Nope . Found that out the hardway with some one swiming directly in to me . The life gaurds watched it happen and so didnt the moron who went in to the lane with me and didnt do a damne thing . I protested and was told that was not against the rules . I signed on to tell you clowns I havent forgotten about you ;)
Positive experience: The gym was beautiful! There was a smell of chlorine.
Negative experience: The library and other recreational areas are okay, but the pool is HORRIBLE. The change rooms are unclean and crowded and there is hair everywhere. And the family change rooms don’t have any shower curtains to shower or enough change rooms. The staff will change their “policy rules” every single day. I will not be going there again.
Negative experience: Its really bad, Dont go to the pool if your 7 or under, Theres always camps, They always close the pool! And theyre telling to their parents to " be in the pool ", The line takes forever, And the life gaurds are HORRIBLE ive seen someone enter and they had to the line WHEN THEY ENTERED. Edit. When your in the line the life gaurd doesnt notice you.
Fantastic experience: I am visiting regularly YMCA since last 3 years. Initially it was very good. Now I have observed and noticed that the Men changing area is very filthy and unclean . Most boys are damaging the property by jumping and throwing the clothes on each other. Most recently the room of reflection was closed due to same behaviour. I have seen boys in the steam room throwing water on the sensors and washing them selves in side the steam room, which is very disturbing others. My suggestion to the administration to approach this problem by appointing some volunteers who observe and report the administration with immediate effect. Closing room of reflection is not the solution.
Negative experience: I was there on Saturdays May the 28 th. I have to say this YMCA yet it is the most unclean facility i ever come across. Change room floor was filty. Shower drainage was so discusted with hairs blockage. Soap dispenser was empty, both swimsuit spinner are both out of oder. I was hoping to have a good Batminton games. The set up was a child play. I doubt that i will be returning to this YMCA ( Sddletown)anytime soon.
Fantastic experience: the staff I've interacted with have created a safe and fun environment. Some staff in particular have gone above and beyond in helping me and I'm grateful for the YMCA and the staff's contributions.
Positive experience: Mostly badminton court is not available. Never after 4 30 any day of week.
Negative experience: This has been our 3rd week starting my son's basket ball but it is not fair to pay this amount just to come and go back home doing nothing. They are more than 40 kids to practice basketball only for one hour. I am sitting 25 minutes now to watch my son doing nothing ....i wush i have other YMCA.
Negative experience: LANE SWIMMERS If you are swimming for a workout and consider yourself medium or above, this is NOT the place. No lane etiquette whatsoever and the lifeguards don't care. Kids jumping in and out of lanes and only 2 lanes available even though online said 4 lanes available. Hot tub is sickeningly over crowded at all times. Disappointed.
Positive experience: Good enough for a full workout, could use more cables
Negative experience: There is onlyi one hand shower in the women swimming shower area and unfortunately it's broken and spraying water everywhere making it useless for everyone.
Fantastic experience: Great place for gym , swimming, Rock climbing and other sports activities
Fantastic experience: YMCA is deeply committed to serving the broader community through outreach programs, youth development initiatives, and social services. From childcare and afterschool programs to job training and leadership development, the YMCA plays a vital role in empowering individuals and strengthening families, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
Negative experience: This YMCA facility really needs renovation.
Positive experience: Everything is good excepted the swimming soit dryer please fix that thanks.
Positive experience: The weight floor and the facilities are good with good coaches that are helpful for people who are new to the gym. However the time for lessons are very annoying as it can take up much of the pool, but the pool is not very clean and is dirty which caused marks on my legs from the chlorine. The lifeguards can get annoying at times as well.
Fantastic experience: Vishal Kumar (Superman) is the best personal trainer I have met. He knows what he is doing. Friendly and helpful. Thanks Vishal
Fantastic experience: Shelly is a good badminton coach for my kids.
Negative experience: Worst life guard ever, sheryans is disrespectful, swearing infront of minors at the pool. Management did nothing about this as he continues to point at us every time we walk by due to this conflict we had. He used derogatory words and hand gestures kicking my family out the pool.
Negative experience: Shreyans one of the lifeguards at YMCA, made us wait at the line because they had a “pool capacity” even once people left they wouldn’t let anyone go in. Once I asked hom he decided to swear at me telling me that he would kick us out deciding how and who goes into the pool. Very egotistical and unaware of the language used with customers around many kids.
Fantastic experience: Meet with the amazing badminton coach shelly. He taught my son how to play badminton in 1 class. The tips given were amazing and was very helpful for someone starting 1st class. Highly recommend to have this coach in every badminton class
Fantastic experience: CJ is very professional & focused on helping me & my wife achieve our goals and makes every session challenging (& somehow fun). Our fitness has increased noticeably and We’ve seen improvements in my ability to complete more sit ups / core exercises, lift progressively heavier weights & generally push ourselves harder throughout each session. We are highly recommended CJ if you need any personal trainer help. Thanks Prashant
Fantastic experience: I've been training with Vishal Kumar (CODE NAME SUPERMAN) at SaddleTown YMCA, and I couldn't be more satisfied with my experience. Their expertise and dedication have truly transformed my fitness journey. Vishal Kumar is not just a knowledgeable professional, but they also tailor workouts to individual needs. Their personalized approach helped me achieve my fitness goals faster than I anticipated. I appreciate the encouragement and motivation they provide during each session.
Fantastic experience: The trainers are really good and supportive, especially Vishal kumar.. His code name is SUPERMAN.. HE IS VERY HELPFUL..
Fantastic experience: “I began my lifting journey with many challenges, but CJ’s coaching has been instrumental in my progress. His expertise in strength training significantly improved my deadlifts and other lifts. More than just increasing weights, CJ focused on correcting my form and enhancing mobility, addressing issues I wasn’t even fully aware of. His approach is both scientific and personalized, making a considerable impact on my development as a novice lifter. CJ’s training methods are effective and well-structured, fostering not just physical strength but also confidence in my abilities. His contribution to my lifting journey has been invaluable, and I highly recommend him to anyone starting out or looking to advance in their lifting goals.”
Fantastic experience: Nice, clean, friendly staff and helpful
Positive experience: I’ve been going to the Saddletowne YMCA gym and it has been an absolutely transformative experience, thanks in large part to the incredible team of personal trainers – Tamber, Moaz, and Vishal. Each of these trainers brings a unique set of skills and expertise, making my fitness journey diverse and comprehensive. Tamber's approach is both inspiring and challenging, pushing me to exceed my own expectations. His knowledge in cardio and endurance training is top-notch, and his motivational style is truly infectious. I've seen remarkable improvements in my stamina and overall cardiovascular health. Moaz is a wizard when it comes to strength and weight training. Under his guidance, I've not only improved my technique but have also seen a significant increase in my strength. His attention to detail and emphasis on correct form has been pivotal in ensuring that I train effectively while minimizing the risk of injury. Lastly, Vishal's expertise in flexibility and functional training has added a new dimension to my routine. His sessions are not only effective but also enjoyable, blending various fitness styles to improve my agility and core strength. His friendly and approachable demeanor makes every session something to look forward to. The facilities at Saddletowne YMCA are exceptionally maintained, but I do believe we can bring newer gym equipment in. The staff is welcoming, and the environment is supportive and inclusive, which enhances the overall experience. The hours are exceptional, but it would be great for hours to extend as it is causing the YMCA to lose members.
Negative experience: This YMCA location keeps the Pool Capacity status at Orange 24/7. Could not be bothered to update their website for swimming lessons or to change the Pool Capacity status. Is it that hard to click a button to update the pool status and to post online schedule?
Negative experience: I wish this was not my closest YMCA. So I’ve been told for weeks now the manager will be updating the website to reflect swim lessons as they seem to be fully closing the pool. It will get done on Monday for the week, it never does. I headed there in -35 weather last Sunday after checking online no mention of lesson or anything and online pool capacity is at green, only to see red pool closed sign posted and to be told whole pool closed for swim lessons and it’s all online and I can’t go for a swim. So I show them yet again it’s not listed as closed online and swim lesson not listed and the online pool capacity is at green. Again told manager will be updating online programs. So now I’ve noticed that they are just leaving the pool capacity at orange online. The pool is pretty much empty and they tell you they keeping it as orange because there is going to be swim lessons. They are just doing that so if you get there and there is really something going on they can say we told you online pool was likely to close. No matter what time of day the website has capacity as orange. This Y needs to do much better at keeping their programs and capacity updating as people rely on this to head to the Y. I don’t think as members paying monthly fees were asking for too much!
Negative experience: Always had a very bad experience with Crystal at member registration desk. She is rude and not empathetic at all. I had terrible experiences with her twice. She doesn’t have any people management skills and have seen her being rude, unkind and unapologetic with other members too. When I asked her nobody answers my call ever, she rudely said everybody is busy and was very unhelpful. She doesn’t have the skills to be at the member registration desk and lacks proper training.
Fantastic experience: Mr. Vishal is such a great gym trainer .under his guidance, I’ve succeeded more than I could ever hope. I’m grateful for his constant support and motivation . Highly recommend ⭐️
Negative experience: Too much rush no rule and regulations guys spend on time on phones not equipments worst ymca location in all calgary
Fantastic experience: Great facility and friendly staff featuring a pool, climbing wall, full gym, and classes
Fantastic experience: Vishal is an amazing trainer. He is always ready to helps and keeps an eyes on everyone.
Negative experience: I've seen blood, feces, vomit in men's locker room. This place needs to be investigated immediately before a new covid variant develops here.
Fantastic experience: Just love it. Great trainers with welcoming attitude. Good variety of machines n weights
Fantastic experience: The gym coach Vishal is fantastic! He is always there to help everyone! He has amazing knowledge and skills for the gym and behaviour is so cool!
Positive experience: I love ymca saddle town..i m almost there everyday..Lv training in gym A big shout out for MR VISHAL he is gem of a trainer.lHis experiance in gyminning is unmatachable..I highly recomend him fir personal trainer .Full marks ti him..
Negative experience: Digesting facility. Everytime I go here I get sick.
Negative experience: Not happy to see employees allow parents and children who are not attending swimming lessons to play in the pool.
Fantastic experience: The climbing wall instructors are amazing at their job, they know what they are doing and are very knowledgeable. They help all types of age groups and teach them how to climb. It’s a great place to have your kids learn new climbing skills.
Negative experience: Times need to be extended and some of the machines have obviously never been cleaned (e.g. stairmasters).
Fantastic experience: it is a nice place to have a quality time with family and friends you can have lot of funnnn nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkloveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrittttttttttttttttttttttttttyttttttyytyyyyytyyttttyyyyyyyyyyyyy
Positive experience: YMCA is amazing place for athlete however, bit expensive for young and adults
Positive experience: Too busy everyday. Have to wait few minutes to let other person finishes and use any equipment.
Fantastic experience: Good place for study , meetings & also for print related your study stuff . Staff are very helpful.
Negative experience: The first gym in the city that close at 9 pm on weekdays and at 5 pm on weekends.
Negative experience: Very close closing time on weekdays and opening and closing time of weekend …. If they don't want to lose the clients, they should change the timing.
Fantastic experience: A lot of amenities for fitness, ranging from swimming, basketball, badminton, gym, indoor running and walking track, indoor mountain climbing.
Positive experience: Pretty good place to go for Swimming and for Gym + U get a library near it
Negative experience: Worst for drop in basketball. Programs and badminton take up more than half a day. People are getting hit with basketballs on their heads. Paid Sports programs are the worst of all. Volunteers are talking to each other instead of coaching kids and letting the kids roam free in the gym. Wouldn’t recommend this place go to seton or rocky ridge
Negative experience: Evening time Public pool hours are not accommodating for day time working parents. Pool opens 7.30pm as I called to confirm. I went there on July 20th at 7.30pm then need to wait for another 15 minutes as swimming lessons were going on in small pool area 7.30pm-7.45pm is bed time for young kids. I am paying for membership just for swimming and going there to wait or see pool full or busy is really frustrating.
Fantastic experience: Been coming here since I was 16, staff is very knowledgeable. Especially the Weight Floor Manager and YMCA general manager, very chill dudes. Made lots of progress here the last 3 years. Prices are good, keep in mind you get more than a gym membership for 80 a month as an adult. You’re getting a swimming pool, track lane, basketball + badminton courts too. I’ve paused and cancelled my membership many times and never had to pay any wack fees
Fantastic experience: The gym is so big and very friendly mentors over there to guide about the equipment and with good facilities
Negative experience: Slow service and a very much pay to play place. No public swim for kids during norma hours. Opens way to late at 8 am and no public swim.from 4:30 pm till 7:45 pm. Your kid only swims in normal hours if you pay for the classes. I.e. pay to play twice. Unfortunately with the planning powers to be for the NE and the terrible decisions made here. there are no other options.
Positive experience: Great location, good machines, lots of space and areas for different sports and activities. Boosterjuice is delicious there. So is the ice cream machine. Cons: during the summer they turn down the AC and ur literally boiling in the workout rooms on the 2nd floors. Due to this the smell factor goes up on body odor. Also the lane swimming, the life guards really need to Crack down on keeping the kids out of them so people can use them for they are intended for.
Fantastic experience: Feels better than other gyms. Everything at one place.
Negative experience: we were there for membership wait for 30 minutes in line then one of new person on till took 25 minutes just on one customer she was struggling keep asked for help then Manager came to us he said come tomorrow we cant help you today he was so rud not deserve be Manager position
Fantastic experience: Best swimming pool in calgary, I am learning how to swim
Negative experience: Customer service is non existent, long lineups and front desk staff are not capable of addressing any concerns brought forward. Tried to get assistance from Aquatics supervisor Lucas Denoy and he was beyond useless. Always defers questions and never gets back.
Negative experience: Was considering membership, but was told no tours of facilities. How do they expect people to become members if they don't allow tours of facilities???Very rude staff..
Negative experience: Good service&staff everything but the closing time is very soon
Fantastic experience: Very clean and neat place with lots of options.
Fantastic experience: It was nice and clean, staff was helpful and understanding. Not too busy today.
Fantastic experience: It's been a good experience so far, ymca helpdesk people are nice and helpful. I cannot give any less than 5 stars.
Negative experience: Worst pool ever for leisure swimming not even a meter deep and they blocked it off for swim classes in like ten minutes to a kitty pool super over crowded, absolute rip off
Negative experience: Pool pretty empty, yet hit capacity somehow and wouldn't let anyone in. Ever dealt with a crying disappointed 3yo who wants to swim? Yea, great. Plus needed to see my driver's license in order to be told I couldn't go in. Plus the car park is a total gong show. Oh and google takes you to the wrong entrance
Positive experience: Nice place. Staffs are cool. Has a lot of things to do
Negative experience: Barely adequate. I used to go to the Y in Toronto and it was a great experience. This Calgary location is a pale imitation. Since it is open an astonishing 29 hours fewer per week than the one I went to in YYZ, it's no surprise that the gym is so packed that every workout is an unpleasant ordeal. Right up until the minute it closes (surely a sign that it should be open later?!), you will be waiting in lines half a dozen deep for every machine. Even finding the floor space just to stand and do a stationary exercise with dumbbells can be a challenge, not least because there are always dozens of unattended children running around screaming. The one thing it has going for it is that the staff are friendly and the facility is well maintained. I just joined a few weeks ago and I'll be cancelling my membership before my second month starts.
Fantastic experience: Most fun place for one and all. Very well maintained facility with swimming, basketball, badminton, gym and a track for jogs. One should get membership from reception to get access to the club.
Negative experience: This place is only a few minutes drive from my house. Haven't been back since the pandemic. My concerns: - lady steam room: people used strong oil and lotion in the steam room. - the steam room sometimes had smell of urine. - people (kids & adults) wore diapers in the pool & hot tub, A few time I noted they pooped- we all had to get out the pool PDQ!!! - kids everywhere on the adult lanes. - noted lifeguard - too soft, couldn't lead/ ask children in order. - loud music - headache.
Fantastic experience: I want to thank Emily, the swimming instructor, who took the time to give me a private lesson today. She helped me get over my fear of swimming and I was able to do laps. You really made my day! Thank you.
Negative experience: I am ready to pay $65 per month but only if they start opening the gym at 6 am. Otherwise Gold Gym at Country Hill is much better thats cheaper and you can go there anytime. I wish they start opening this Gym at 6 in the morning.
Negative experience: The facility opens late in mornings. Further no open swim on weekends until 1 PM. If YMCA were open by 5 or 6 in the morning and said no open swim from 9-1 PM due to lessons would be more justifiable. Same issue with weekdays, the facility is only open by 8 AM. Lot of people would have started work by then, so this leads to very busy gym and pool in the evenings. YMCA is increasing the membership fee but it appears is not making any effort to accommodate members! I have also noticed some employees are very rude in their responses. I have been a member for only 1 month, but very much disappointed with subpar service.
Fantastic experience: Shreyan is a good lifeguard with positive vibes and very helpful.
Fantastic experience: lifeguard name sheryan knows everything about the pool safety rules. he also advice me for swimming lessons. has very good knowledge about everything and very friendly and he pass the vibe being at the pool.
Negative experience: I don't get the point of the management, opening the pool to everyone and you just let them stay at the small area?Just because you have a swimming lesson and we are not allowed to use the 2 sides of the pool, specially for adults.Atleast set your time for the swimming lesson so that the customer would be notify, and let them know what time they could enjoy the pool!
Negative experience: Awful place. Booked their badminton courts. Don’t bother with booking because the management’s friends who they know to be ‘good people’ get to play while those with the booking are told to either leave or the courts would be shut down for everyone. Just a toxic culture with power drunk management. Lack of professionalism.
Positive experience: Pretty decent YMCA, except there was only one open till to serve a long lineup of people.
Fantastic experience: Went here for a course and the staff were amazing and overall just a cool environment. I was there for a pool course and the lifeguards were great! Change rooms were also pretty clean and I appreciate that!
Negative experience: After multiple attempts of trying to reach this YMCA through the phone regarding inquiries about family memberships and swimming lessons, I was put on the phone with an agent who was extremely disrespectful and rude. As I was trying to speak to him, he cut me off two different times to scold someone beside him (not sure if it was an employee or a customer), and I sat on the line for around 3 minutes each time just listening to him yell at people. The whole thing was extremely disrespectful and rude, and I am sure to look elsewhere for my interest, a place that will treat people with respect.
Negative experience: I see people are complaining about the prices I agree as well just received a message they are increasing 5% more my god how much are you going to increase this gym definitely doesn't look $85 a month so machines need repair and it's a small gym upstairs and horrible hours not even 24 hours open for that price want a business advice drop the price or make a separate membership for people who only come for working out and don't use the basketball court and swimming pool!
Positive experience: The new pool staff is very nice compare to the previous one. Old staff was very loud and rude to everyone especially kids.
Negative experience: This gym is a ripoff!! They have increased prices to $80 higher than any gym I know in Calgary and all they have is a small gym upstairs less weight machines and horrible hours. Should have a membership plan with workout gym only no swimming pool and basketball court so it's at least worth something and not $80!!!
Positive experience: Very fun and great place to spend your time. The pool is clean with nice people. Although the gym could have been bigger it has everything you need along with a full basketball and badminton court. Great place to spend your time.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic place to stay active and have fun with friends and family. Big shoutout to Shreyans for helping my little cousin at the pool he knows what he is doing!!
Fantastic experience: This place was fantastic. I went there to relax myself and Shreyans helped me with everything. He kept everything on the top helping me around and providing the best service. I will definitely come back. He also helped me with a lifejacket.
Fantastic experience: I really like in morning because morning exercise gives me some flexibility and motivation
Negative experience: Very bad service…they’re charging a lot of fee every month but just open from 8am to 9pm,they must increase their regular gym hours.
