As someone who was looking to get back into Brazilian jiu-jitsu I am so happy and thankful to have followed the advice I received from leading members of the grappling community who all told me to go and train with Adam and Lyndsie Zugec in Victoria, BC. Not only is Adam (4th degree black belt) and his 20 or more black belts some of the most successful instructors/competitors in world, but they are also some of the nicest and friendly people I've met since I first moved to Victoria 21 years ago. Everyone was so welcoming and kind to me my first day! 2 years later I have learned so much about BJJ, Kickboxing, MMA, NoGi grappling, and wrestling. I have been inspired by what I've learned at Zuma to push myself to reach new goals in my life and expand my potential. I've lost close to 40 pounds, improved flexibility, developed athletic strength that has helped to prevent injuries, and boosted my energy levels at work and home. The Zuma class schedule provides morning, noon, night time training sessions as well as weekends. My favourite aspect of Zuma is the friendships I've made with so many great people who I am honoured to call friends and who I think of more like family. Fantastic experience: I trained a tiny bit several years ago, and had been wanting to restart for a while. After moving to Victoria, and approaching middle age, I wasn’t sure what existed here at first, or if training was even still realistic, but have been amazed to find a world class gym at Zuma (with professional MMA fighters, Kickboxing & BJJ Champions) that’s incredibly friendly and very welcoming to entry-level hobbyists of all types. Loving getting back into it, and hoping to be here until I have a grey beard and a darker belt.

Fantastic experience: I’ve been doing Gi jujitsu here Tuesday and Thursday nights since January 2023. Lindsay and Zach are great teachers, class begins with a warm up of rolls and other key movements then there’s around 45 minutes of technique that you drill with with a partner. Usually there are a few variations to go over. After that you put your drilling to work with positional rolling, where you try, emphasis on try, to do what you just learned with an active opponent or two. After that comes rolling where you get a chance to start from standing with an opponent for a series of 5 minute rounds. There is nothing like BJJ for physical and mental exercise. I come out of sessions feeling exhausted, sometimes bruised, but elated. Over the months you get to know the other guys in class and are struck by how welcoming and friendly everyone is. Newcomers are always invited in to try it out and more often than not, you see them keep showing up and becoming regulars. You will never be more present than when someone is trying to strangle you. Following that with a fist bump and a laugh seems to be the antidote to the trials of modern life.

Fantastic experience: Zuma is a great martial arts gym for anyone at any point in their fitness journey. I was a larger person when I started coming but everyone welcomed me and made sure I felt comfortable going through the classes. I highly recommend Zuma to anyone.

Zuma offers some of the highest level martial arts training you will find in BC, let alone Vancouver Island, and is held together by an incredible community of people. Coaches are incredibly knowledgeable and qualified, and there is a wealth of experience and diversity among the member base. They also offer the largest variety of class times of any gym I've been to, so no matter your schedule you will likely find class times that work for you. You'll get in shape, meet new lifelong friends, and have some of the most fun of your life here. Come train and find out!

Negative experience: No answer to multiple attempts to contact them...do they even exist? I swear that I have tried multiple times to contact them, but to no avail.

Fantastic experience: Visited from Vancouver at the 615pm Nogi class. Lyndsie was very warm and welcoming. The overall atmosphere of the gym matched her energy as well. Class focused on two sequences, one on upper body submissions and the other on lower body submissions. Rolling and technique both took 30-45 minutes of the allotted class time respectively. I found my experience to be very enjoyable.

Top gym for bjj in my opinion in Victoria. Strikes the right balance of professionalism and family atmosphere. The gym is clean, classes start on time, billing is issue free, and the instructors are knowledgeable and personable. You’ll find absolute beginners to competition colored belts. The staff is so approachable and eager to share their knowledge. They eat, breathe, and live mma and take amazing pride in the accomplishments of their students. The staff can give you what you are looking for and at the same time be so welcoming of everyone and down to earth. No risk of ever getting bored like your traditional gym workout as you can switch between muay thai, wrestling, Brazilian jiu jitsu, judo, grappling, and classes for kids as well. Easily the best workout you will ever have while learning an invaluable skill from world class instructors.

Fantastic experience: Zuma Martial Arts is a gem in our small city. World class training that you wouldn't expect in Victoria. I've trained elsewhere in town and was never satisfied with the level of knowledge or approach. When I saw an article in the paper about Adam and Sarah I called up and got to speak with Adam directly. I was struck by how friendly and welcoming he was and he invited me down to give it a try. I've been there now for over 10 years and it feels like my second family. Highly recommended for anyone looking to have fun, learn endlessly, and be around genuinely amazing human beings.

Having no background or experience in kickboxing, I went and tried a kickboxing class in the morning and had the most amazing time. Sarah the instructor was super friendly, patient, and funny.
