Our comment from FitFit Canada about Ryerson Recreation:
Welcome to the Ryerson Recreation Centre, located in the heart of Toronto. This vibrant facility offers a wide range of amenities that cater to both fitness enthusiasts and casual users alike. With features such as:
- Swimming Pool: Enjoy a well-maintained swimming pool with flexible hours and a saltwater option for a refreshing swim.
- Variety of Sports: The centre provides excellent spaces for basketball, squash, and other sports.
- Group Classes: Engage in dynamic gym classes filled with fun and music.
- High-Quality Equipment: Access to well-maintained machines spread across multiple buildings, including the Mattamy Athletic Centre and the Recreation and Athletic Centre.
Many users appreciate the inclusivity and friendly staff, making it a welcoming environment for everyone. The facility is particularly popular among Ryerson students, offering competitive membership prices and an excellent value for locals.
However, some visitors have noted a few areas for improvement such as:
- Temperature Control: There are comments about it getting warm in some areas, especially during peak hours.
- Weekend Hours: Some users wish for longer weekend hours to accommodate their schedules.
- Ventilation: Increased air circulation would enhance the workout experience.
Despite these minor issues, the overall sentiment is positive, making Ryerson Recreation a highly regarded spot for fitness and recreation in Toronto.
Ryerson Recreation: Opinions
Fantastic experience: I just wanted to give a big shoutout to Sulieman and Sharif at the RAC at TMU. Every time I’ve come in, they’ve been super friendly, welcoming, and helpful. It really makes a difference to be greeted by people who care and bring great energy to the space. They both do an amazing job and deserve recognition for the way they treat students and keep things running smoothly!
Positive experience: Has the resources (swimming pool, spin classes, etc)cool place. Inclusive and there is an app for it too.
Positive experience: The gym is great! I do find it a bit too hot in there though. The treadmills in the top area dont have built in fans so it gets real hot when running. I also hate the weekend hours. And kind of with they were 24 hour gyms. Considering you need a one card to get in, i think it would be easy to implement 24/hr service
Fantastic experience: Great Gym and Equipment. Everything you need.
Fantastic experience: Great spot to hoop, lift or play squash
Positive experience: busy but good
Fantastic experience: great pool + lovely lifeguards
Fantastic experience: the gym classes are very fun with music^^
Fantastic experience: Gym.
Positive experience: It’s not Ryerson it’s MTU now. Either way I’m sure it’s fine. I don’t use their services. I only use the outdoor park in the very lovely quad on top of the underground rec. centre.
Fantastic experience: Love it. I take my dog for a walk there and it’s a very peaceful and green area in the city. However, the name is Toronto Metropolitan University Recreation Centre and NOT Ryerson
Positive experience: Very old school vibe which makes you want to workout. However not late timings on weekends and no proper air condition or air circulation inside. The price got hiked up recently.
Positive experience: Good gym but hot a lot of the times. Busy times during the semester are 12 to 6 pm.
Fantastic experience: Excellent facilities spread over 3 main building on campus: Mattamy Athletic Centre (MAC) Recreation and Athletic Centre (RAC) Kerr Hall (Lower Gym + Kerr Hall Gym) A wide array of programming with with extremely competitive prices for memberships and add on services. Staff are well trained and service oriented and foster a healthy around health and wellness and equity, diversity and inclusion! Clean facilities (Gyms, studios, weight rooms, track, pool, squash courts, ice arena)
Fantastic experience: best basketball courts in the downtown core. great competition.
Negative experience: Use the Mac its better You cant breath there. Im shocked how a gym has no air circulation. No fans, no AC, its damp and boiling inside. In the middle of the summer its warmer inside than it is outside. Many of the other reviews say the same thing. Its a shame it could be alot better.
Fantastic experience: The facilities are spacious and the equipment is well maintained, but the real standout of this gym is the pool and sauna. You can almost always get your own lane for swimming and the times are really flexible. For students and alumni, the prices are amazing, especially compared to gyms like GoodLife and Extreme Fitness. You get free towel service, reasonably priced monthly locker storage and access to the MAC facilities.
Positive experience: Would prefer Mac for its equipment, and is quite busy for such a small training area.
Fantastic experience: Love it
Fantastic experience: Miss going here because of Covid, the facility was great. I love the staff they are very friendly. One staff member named Rizwan would always be very welcoming and made sure everything was operating smoothly. And he’s cute
Positive experience: Just okay
Positive experience: Decent place to exercise, LGBTQ+ friendly environment. (Could not find single stall change rooms)
Positive experience: Has a lot of facilities but mediocre at most and most of the time the gym is packed
Negative experience: It’s says on the website RAC is open and operating from 9:30am til 10:30pm. Today is August 11th 2020, I went to the facility and see if I can join. But no, it’s not open, they lied. They’re not open. They should not post that schedule online and waste our times. Shame
Positive experience: Salted water is a plus but it is too small for a university pool. The location is great for adult taking TTC but too difficult/expensive to find a parking spot when taking children or there are many equipments to bring. The signages in the building are not plenty, very difficult to find the pool and exits.
Positive experience: Good gym space for Ryerson students. I find that it requires better ventilation but otherwise, great staff and amenities. Restricted to Ryerson students only!
Fantastic experience: Homey (:
Fantastic experience: Great place, it's also included in Ryerson tuition
Fantastic experience: Classy gym
Fantastic experience: Family workout. Staying fit as a family.
Fantastic experience: Clean , loads of space and things to do
Positive experience: 门楼很美,布满常春藤感觉生机勃勃!
Fantastic experience: Favorite building on campus
Positive experience: Lit
Positive experience: Nice location. Friendly environment and available public parking
Positive experience: A variety pf sports can be played such table tennis, basketball, can even go swimming, n the gym
Positive experience: Good facility, and cool staff. But, I think that I'll graduate before they fix their sauna.
Positive experience: Great place to workout. Wish they had some more variety with equipment, but over all really good. Staff is friendly as well!
Positive experience: Decent gym. Not the largest weight room but it's got a good variety. The underground vibe is really cool.
Negative experience: Half the lockers are broken, the (very limited) cardio machines always have at least one or two out of service. The showers are clean but there's nowhere to put your things and most of the curtains are barely hanging on. It's firmly "Okay" in my eyes- I would never pay for a membership if I wasn't a student.
Fantastic experience: Amazing staff
Fantastic experience: Great classes, running track, but the weight room is a little small and gets crowded at rush hours
Fantastic experience: Great facility
Fantastic experience: Favorite building on campus
Fantastic experience: good place to workout
Fantastic experience: Great spot!
Fantastic experience: Love the pool and the group fitness classes
Fantastic experience: They have ping pong
Fantastic experience: the staff is nice
Negative experience: RU does not spend a penny for men and women changrooms
Positive experience: Needs better air vents.
Fantastic experience: It's good
Negative experience: rude Yoga instructor Bell
Positive experience: Great gym, just needs more AC.
Fantastic experience: It's good
Fantastic experience: Awesome!
Fantastic experience: I'm a regular during the semester. Great spot to play ball
Fantastic experience: Great facilities for a nice workout in between classes
Fantastic experience: The environment is serious, just so you can bust a sweat. Friendly staff
Fantastic experience: Amazing facility, amazing location concept
Fantastic experience: Very nice facilities, includes gyms, sauna, track field, weight room and squash courts. Can accommodate a lot of people but can also be crowded during peak times in the evenings.
Fantastic experience: One of the most well equipped university athletic centers
Fantastic experience: Awesome!
Negative experience: Dirty and old. Consider going to Mattamy or Goldwing instead.
Negative experience: Extremely not user friendly - the change rooms are in the back of the building, and the cardio stuff is in the front of the gym.... Everything has their individual rooms like how do people find things?!?!? Did not have a map or get pointed in the right direction on the first day, spent so long trying to figure it out :(
Fantastic experience: I've been swimming here as a non student, so can only comment on the pool, but it's great value. The facilities are nice and reasonably clean considering the traffic. I always get my own lane, so the pool is never too busy, even during lunch hours when I swim. It's not a full 25 meters, but close enough. You get a towel. It just gets annoying to have to use my card to exit, but really, it's cool.
Positive experience: I really like this gym better than MAC. After the overhaul they did with new equipment like MAC it is a more modern fitness room now. I, however, wish that there was a system of showing how busy it is at each time of the day for each day. Something like "popular times" for this location as well so that we could plan out exercising times accordingly.
Hi Afshin,Thank you for this positive review! You will be happy to hear that we are currently working on something which will indicate popular/busy times.
Fantastic experience: The staff in both RAC and MAC are amazing, they are very helpful and I feel welcome. The pool area is clean and the weightlifting area is always neat!!! I prefer these facilities over other commercial gyms!!!

Fantastic experience: You need to go to ryerson to go in for "free" but one time usage is usually around $8
