Mississauga YMCA: Avis

Expérience négative: My daughter previously attended swim classes here but decided to stop because of discomfort with an instructor named 'Teran' (based on pronunciation). She expressed feeling uncomfortable with his hand positions and the lack of personal space. We decided to leave immediately and didn’t address it at the time, but I later learned from her school that several other students also chose to leave because of this coach. I strongly urge the staff to address this issue, and I encourage parents to be aware.

Expérience fantastique: Been coming here for years. I read some complaints and negative reviews but honestly this place has changed my life and being part of it was the best decision I have ever made. Facilities are well kept. The change rooms are properly maintained. I meet some good people and made new friends here. One thing is I wish they add boxing lessons or classes. Other than that, it has a lot of equipment and room for you to do a proper workout but most of all a MUST TRY classes for almost all of one’s fitness needs. Any Class by Francyne Abreu is a MUST TRY!!! She’s AMAZING and we LOVE her!! After each class, we all talk about how great the workout was. You can clearly see the passion in her not just for what she does but for the YMCA as an organization over all. From all the instructors, she’s the only one who would check new faces and make sure they actually are registered for the class, she is the only one (that I noticed) who would make sure the equipment is put properly to prevent damage, and last but not least, she’s the only instructor who would give reminders about what’s going on in the YMCA from marathon to any special events happening to get us more involved I always look forward to ANY class done by Francyne Abreu. I just wanted to take a moment to thank you Francyne for the great training and sessions you provide Your positive energy, expertise and knowledge has been invaluable in helping us to understand and apply what we've learned. Your enthusiasm and positive attitude have also made the experience enjoyable and engaging. I would definitely recommend YMCA. Top equipment and great environment. Good service with friendly staff and super clean and comfortable gym for everyone from beginners to professional athletes to train at.

Expérience négative: Staff at the front reception are not maybe properly trained. inconsistent security procedure at the front. No one checks who's coming in. Even one without ID can just come in and go.

Expérience négative: Experienced theft here, as have many other customers. Someone picked my lock and stole only my bank and credit cards from my wallet. If you look on the Peel crime map, you will see there have been over a dozen REPORTED thefts here in the past year alone. Given only 3% of credit card fraud is reported, you can imagine how high the actual number must be here. This is endemic, and the staff need to seriously do something about it. Since it is the exact same style of theft as the other reviews mentioned, I suspect it is the same person doing it each time. The change room isn't in a great state. There is a severely water damaged roof. That being said, there is a really good sauna here, and the wait room has ample equipment and weighs. This would be a really good gym if only they did something about their report theft problem.

Expérience négative: I just joined YMCA and thought I would love it. My children are taking swimming classes here. There is a cleaner, every time everyone gets out of the shower and dry the kids, this cleaner would stand right in front of the exit and yell at every each child passes by. We let it go the first time but today has gone far. There was a huge line up behind and keep pushing to get out of the shower behind us. As soon as we got out we got stopped by this cleaner and said "water is dripping you need to dry her". I said I did but I'll dry her more in changing room there is a line up behind us. He started yelling again " how come no one drying before coming". After he left when there is still a line up behind and after 2 minutes the whole floor is wet again. The cleaner was already gone. This is unacceptable We do not pay to come here to get yelled at

Expérience négative: YMCA add fear in children in swimming classes Instructor has fear of getting into water and they don’t even tech student basic position rather they expect kids to learn from thier home and they even make them feel awake am this is worst swimming instruction classes my son had to learn out of his way and let from someone to understand why strokes or technique he has to apply to progress finally even before classes has ended they marked him incomplete and asked him to repeat classes which demotivates him to attend further classes how can we all be so in human

Expérience fantastique: I love working out here. It's reasonably priced as I have been to a lot of gyms. It's community friendly and has variety of activities. Staffs are professional and knowledgeable including the volunteers! It's well maintained and has a welcoming atmosphere. A happy customer here! Thank you Mississauga YMCA!

Expérience négative: I have a personal experience to share...few weeks ago, my locker was compromised and someone stole couple of bank cards from my wallet that I left in the locker. I reported the incident to the facility manager (Sandra S) but never even got any acknowledgement of my complaint let alone any next steps this facility normally advises to the victims of theft. I ended up filing a police report and have a case registered now. I would suggest extreme caution while at this place.

Bev Lee 9 months ago

Expérience négative: The staff at this Y are extremely unprofessional and rude. The environment is unwelcoming/unsafe and the facility is poorly maintained. The staff here need to be educated on discrimination laws and the YMCA’s policies and code of conduct. The front desk as well as the cleaning staff are always miserable, angry and seem to get a kick out of making members feel uncomfortable and giving them a hard time. I have experienced theft here and to be honest I strongly believe it is the cleaning staff. They constantly stand around staring at personal belongings and lack awareness of personal space, basic decency for privacy and respect. I would definitely consider this facility to be an unsafe space for children as well.

Expérience négative: Turn down the volume please!!!!!! I have registered 90 Decibels during the fitness classes here, and to be clear I’m not even in the gym! The music and shouting is so loud it drowns out the music in your own headphones at max! I brought this complaint forward a few times before and finally I received a response From the manager Tiffany but she is just brushing me off stating they approve 80 Decibels which in itself is an absolutely ridiculous noise level for an indoor activity. I can’t understand why they wouldn’t just limit the volume to a far more reasonable level, especially since there are kids EVERYWHERE at this gym and it will damage hearing. Shame on you YMCA for not being responsible and reasonable with sound levels given your long history as a family organization geared to engage the community with “respect” “responsibility” and “integrity” to use your own mission statement.

Expérience fantastique: What a great kids swimming lessons program. The patience of these young instructors is something to be marveled. What an amazing experience, an immensely convenient location in the heart of Mississauga and some of the best employees I have had the privilege of interacting with. The city of Mississauga would truly be at a loss to lose such an popular and well situated service. A city with so much culture and now Canadians deserves this top notch facility.

Expérience négative: Spending almost 120$ per month, and that’s what happened in the member plus room… Random people can just sneaking into the member plus room and do whatever they would want to. It’s like a free open ATM for those people to grab and go. Front desk saying that hopefully someone can take care of this and yet, I can’t even get a free and new lock.

Expérience négative: Unprofessional, rude, not respectful receptionist Sana in the front desk ruine reputation of the YMCA Mississauga. Management should choose polite and friendly staff on this role. The swimming lessons are good, pool looks clean.

Expérience négative: I have been harassed by a staff female reception her name is Sanah at the Mississauga YMCA The incident happened at 6:30 30/10/2023. she kept us waiting to issue a parent card and when was our turn, she lost the paper which she requested to fill out info on it and when we complained about that she refused to serve us, and I have requested to speak with a supervisor and no one at the facility helped. All staff stand and watched with no care. You should hire people to respect and do their jobs which they take a salary for it not people who harass people for no reason. I am filing a serious complain and you should investigate. I'm expecting someone to reach out.

Expérience négative: YMCA GTA (Mississauga) Employment Service very bad I have been connected to the YMCA for 6 months. I got good service at the initial. After that no reply, no response from them. Even for the next appointment, I have to call and tell them that we did this before but I didn't get any response from any clients so please tell me what to do the next step. They didn't talk like that and said you have to book an appointment at that time we'll discuss then they booked my appointment after one week. During the appointment time, they took only 10 min to say that this is the list of jobs we found for you now you have to apply. So, we have to apply and again didn't get any response from where you apply. Again call them and the process they done. I have done 4 times this same process. Now, I have to close my account and do the other program with another employment agency. I tried to call them, and also to my consultant personally via mail via call but they didn't reply or respond. They took my call and said do you have your consultant's mail if I say yes then they tell me to reach out to her via mail. The receptionist service is also not friendly. It was rude behaviour. So many times I tried to directly with my consultant, Serwaa Owusu-Ansah but she didn't pick up my call and even she didn't respond to me. Still, I'm suffering with this situation. I have had the worst experience with this consultant and the office of the YMCA. Don't expect good employment service from YMCA particularly Mississauga.

Expérience négative: Please be aware that the YMCA has decided to debit member's accounts arbitrarily for their membership. They are supposed to send out a notice via mail at least 2 months in advance that your membership is up for renewal and to come in and fill out another application. This morning I find out they went into my account without my authorization and took out two payments totalling over $115. I call up and they tell me it is a system problem, some renewals were missed and some members are being charged the full fee and you have to come in and sort it out. No apology and they do not care that this happened. This is outrageous and wrong and no one can afford to have money taken out their account on a whim.

Expérience négative: I love the Y, its so conveniently located in the heart of Mississauga and easy to walk to if you live in the area. It has very nice natural light, a modern building and nice staff. However, the gym section is a bit small and you have to wait a while to use a machine during peak hours. My other issue is their weekend timings, 4pm is way too early - at least make it 6 or 8pm. Overall, its a good gym in turns of convenience but it has room for improvement.

Sunny M 1 year ago

Expérience fantastique: It is one of the biggest facility YMCA has in Mississauga. One of the good centers here with a lot of activities for all age groups. Swimming, gym, karate and a lot more. There ia no library inside though. Hige parking lot which is full mostly due to rush inside and being at center of city having lot of businesses around. Vehicle entry and exit is from one side only which is narrow and restricted space. Staff is highly cooperative, polite and helping.

Expérience fantastique: This YMCA is conveniently located in the heart of Mississauga. It's a modern, multi-level facility with dozens of amenities and group classes for almost all of one's fitness needs. Many of the spaces have pleasant natural light flooding in. Parking is included with membership, and your membership can be used easily at any other GTA YMCA, but also at any YMCA in the world, which I find useful when I'm traveling elsewhere beyond the GTA.

Expérience positive: Decent gym. Weekend hours are too early (6 PM). Mornings and early afternoons are the best times to go, peak times are around 6pm on weekdays. Expérience négative: Future members beware when canceling your membership. YMCA gyms will continue to charge your Credit Card and when you try to get your money back from the extra charges, you won’t get it back unless you have proof you canceled. You will end up talking to the manager that will state that there has been an error in the system and your cancellation didn’t register. This issue happened to my sister years ago and it happened to me. I ask the administrator to print me a copy of my cancellation. Lo and behold, I get an extra charge the following month and the same excuse from the manager at this location. I showed printed copy of my cancellation and gave me a refund of the extra charge.

Expérience positive: This is an excellent gym with smart management. I am happy that they are taking good precautions and making sure everyone is safe.Staff is dedicated and focused, in spite of the challenges they face by the same group of people who are always complaining about safety precautions everywhere, and almost about everything. The place is very clean, distances are respected and machines are continuously disinfected. Well done staff and management!

Expérience négative: Worst and most wasteful of money!! Never consider registering there! Unfortunately, no one respects you, the gym is always empty, and you are not permitted to play any sport other than badminton!!! I hope you guys close this location as soon as possible to protect the YMCA's good name.

Expérience négative: You have to show your gym membership, government ID and proof of vaccination EVERY single time you step in this establishment at the front door... Keep in mind you're already a member and they don't have a system that tells them you've been vaccinated already because they are too incompetent to create one... I'm already vaccinated and you've seen my records confirming it, why do I have to keep showing it every single visit? It's an ok gym but the workers look like they don't even want to be there.

Expérience négative: Worst and wast of money!! Dont ever think to register there! Expérience fantastique: I have been a member of this Y since 2005. It's a busy place with some parking challenges but the people there more than make up for this. I mostly use the pool, love the aquafit instructors and have made acquaintance with several people that attend the classes regularly. The small warmer pool has had issues with it's hydraulic floor over the years but if this happens the classes get accommodated in the big pool which is much appreciated. The fitness schedules are well thought out and improvements to the facilities are done on regular basis.

Expérience négative: I would give it a higher rating if it wasn't for the horrendous parking issue. I have to spend half an hour in line to enter the parking lot. Its absolutely ridiculous and I wish they would do something about it.

Expérience négative: Really good facility. I have my daughter going there for swimming lessons. Barrar is her instructor, he is really great. I have a few concerns: 1) "No Outdoor shoe policy in the swimming area" this is good, but NO ONE Listens to it. They still have people in outdoor runners, Sandles, etc... they should really implement it. It's really gross actually. 2) wet and dirty the change rooms are.... I understand that there's ALOT of swimming lessons going on, BUT have your cleaning staff at the Highest frequency of clenaing/checking in on them 3) Gross bathrooms.... again, High swimming lesson times, BUT again Have the cleaning people check and clean it the most It's a good place to go, but I just think that Management is slacking in some departments... Also, if you are a YMCA member, maybe mind your Mannars, and aide in your part of keeping it clean and Hygenic as well.... it might not be your home, but unless you yourself Live in Filth, than you do not have any reason why you cannot HELP to keep it clean too. MG Navarro 5 years ago

Expérience fantastique: I have been a member since 2000 and I wouldn't sign up at any other gym but the Y. The membership price is very reasonable and competitive with other gyms that do not offer nearly as many activities as the Y does. Parking lot can get super busy at peak times and yes the floors can get crowded so for all the haters complaining about the crowds, stop going at peak times. For the other people complaining about theft, well...is it the Y's responsibility to secure your valuables? Unless they provide safety deposit boxes, I believe it would be the user's responsibility to secure one's valuables. It is not like they can install cameras in the change rooms so rule#1 of working out: leave your valuables at home. Not sure why someone would leave hundreds of dollars, electronics, other valuables in their locker unless they carry them with them while working out. It's common sense, not like you leave wallets or purses in your car on plain sight. The same goes for weights being all over the place, I don't think it is the staff's responsibility to clean up after you so if weights and equipment are all over the place is because people are not respecting the common space. Should the Y offer orientation upon sig ing up so people respect other people's boundaries? It's common sense, teaching people to respect people would eliminate 90%of the negative reviews. It is not a Y problem it is a people problem. The Y is amazing so stop hating because of a bad experience caused by somebody else other than staff or building facilities because from my experience they have always been spectacular. They offer vast activities such as: floor hockey, volleyball, soccer, taekwondo, yoga, pilates, spinning classes, badminton, table tennis, swimming pool, personal trainers, free weights, treadmills, elipticals, rowing machines, stairmaster, basketball, several group classes, running track, boxing sack, yoga mats, kettlebells, trx, etc. It is wheelchair accessible and definitely a place you want to be if you want to be healthy. Not your elite gym but an inclusive fitness centre where serving the community is a top priority. I have recommended this place over and over again and everyone I recommend it to signs up. I like it because it is a healthy athletic community that feels everyone feel welcome.

Expérience négative: We are people who wake up so early and go to exercise before going to work. I get there at 5 am during the week for lap swimming. One time there was no heat water which made me leave YMCA because i can't use freezing cold water before/during/after swim. Today Friday June 14th i went and found mainpool is closed! For whatever unknown reason. I need to be informed earlier. I can't make it to YMCA before work and find swimming facility unfunctional. I may just invest those early hours for a better sleep! We need to be informed earlier whether by sms or email. We need someone responsible to contact us earlier than just show up surprise.

Expérience positive: Serves my purpose for weight training. Could upgrade to new machines, alternatives are available though. Women's change area is mostly untidy with water everywhere. Water sprinklers in the bath area have an abnormal high pressure, it hurts , specifically the one on the extreme left. I once lost my footwear left out, so I can use the washroom and come back, someone stole them in less than 3 minutes LOL I am just glad they are an old pair! Just wish more security measures are taken here!

Expérience positive: Great Place to workout and relax- they offer lots of group activity and child programs. Staff is certified and highly trained. There pools are good and also provide services to member plus (costly) like gym, sauna, steam, grooming, tea, coffee, etc. They also have 2 weeks trail period. Please check out once as its is good for kids:) Your Membership will work across GTA. Thanks YMCA for providing these services.

Expérience négative: The pool is disgusting. It constantly looks like someone went swimming with a box of tissues. The lifeguards are more interested with looking at their watches instead of doing their jobs. The let people stand in the middle of the lane swim and block people who are actually there to swim. The members are disrespectful. I quit after only being a member for 2 months because of constant issues with the pool. The tipping point: being told I was "bad" because of my skin color. Not cool.

Expérience négative: Although I have been a member of YMCA Burnamthorpe road for a year, and was a big fan of the facility, as much that I even referred several family friends to YMCA who are regular members now based on my referral, but now I am considering canceling my membership itself. The reason is some of the employees treat the customers like trash, misbehaving and ordering them around like customers are the ones working for them. The following happened at around 1 PM on Saturday 04.13.2019. Situation: my wife, new to Ymca was totally unaware that video chatting is not permitted in the premises. While she was video chatting, an employee named Sam came upto her and literally shouted at her that “you are not allowed to “record” here!” She further shouted that “my supervisor will come and speak to you!” She just assumed that my wife was recording or taking pictures and never felt the need to clarify. 5 minutes later the supervisor named Marta arrives and behaves like a cop catching a thief. She continues shouting at my wife saying “we will report you, what is your name, what is your phone number etc!” My wife calls me, and when I arrive, Marta begins shouting at me, accusing “your wife took pictures!” I ask her “can you show me?” And to which she had no answer! There was another supervisor there and I clearly mentioned to her that I am not going to speak to Marta, which angered Marta even more. Marta (with her eyes practically popping out of the sockets) orders me to follow her to where the policy is mentioned to which I say no since she was angry all the while and I requested the other supervisor to show me the policy. The policy said “No cellphones and recording equipment allowed.” And then I proceeded to show her at least two other customers with their cellphones out and then Marta rushed to have them put the phones back in their pockets. The whole episode ended with the second supervisor apologizing to my wife and that was when I told her that none of this would have happened if the first person if the first employee would’ve just spoke to my wife properly and politely. And Marta just went on saying that my wife took pictures and made videos, all of which she just assumed and blew it all out of proportion and when she was confronted, she had no viable response! Throughout the last year of my membership, I only met humble and responsible people but I guess all the other reviews about misbehaving employees are true, which I had simply ignored until now. These people need to realize that people aren’t fools, and are simply not scared when such employees gang up on them. And most of all, people like me will not tolerate any such nonsense and definitely not be intimidated by such arrogant employees at Y.

Expérience positive: I've been a gym member since 2000. Overall, lots of classes, variety of machines, the track is facing many large windows, changeroom decently clean. Lots of thieves though! Almost every 4 months, posters on the walls of women's changeroom warning us of thieves recently. Do not leave wallet/phone/car key in locker!! My locker got broken into and thief stole gym bag. I had a Dudley lock. Luckily, I don't bring valuables. All she stole was old clothes and a hair dryer.
