Fantastic experience: INCREDIBLE GYM! If you want an authentic Muay Thai experience - this is the place! From the instructors, classes and overall community - I couldn’t be happier. Never in my life would I have thought I could feel so safe in a gym environment and happy with the Muay Thai family I’ve discovered. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced fighter, you can count on these instructors to take their time and abilities to really advance you! This gym is truly one of a kind - there’s no place as special as this one ❤️

Fantastic experience: Love this place! I signed up in October, and the Old School team has been incredibly helpful and accommodating to me as a beginner - plus it’s an awesome workout. Everyone including the Krus and more advanced fighters are always kind, and provide a welcoming environment to train in. Highly recommend this place, especially if you’re a girl and worry about the sport being too male-dominated - there’s lots of us!

Old School Muay Thai

That means a lot to us. Thank you! We have a wonderful community.

Negative experience: Horrible gym environment for women, unsafe and owner refuses to acknowledge or support when concerns are brought to them. When I tried to cancel the remainder of my membership after incidents, the owner refused. There’s a reason it’s cheaper than other gyms — it’s barely a business. Was at the gym for 2.5 years and left after safety concerns. There are far better options in the city, do not waste your time here. EDIT (June 2024): Consider the optics of the strategically timed but conveniently vague reviews that have been written after mine (by women who have joined the gym well after I have left) that are meant to a. bury my review and b. invalidate my experience while providing zero facts or examples of what makes the gym so "~safe and the BEST FAMILY." What does that tell you about how women support each other in this gym when one individual has a bad experience? What does that tell you about the integrity in this gym? Just admit that there’s room for improvement, is that so hard? I hope this gym does get better, but it needs to accept feedback first. As you can see from the hilarious response below, it refuses to. An objective summary of facts is not me “coming at you” — if you perceive this as an attack, you’re fighting with reality buddy. Maybe get your act together as a business and community so that reality is in your favour. Be warned, and be ready to get sub-par Muay Thai training from aged out (ie, failed) semi-pro athletes with anger issues who are more intent on dating/grooming the women in the gym than teaching them. Comes with a side order of staph infections from the mats in the disgusting facility, if not from the staff (pun not intended). Yikes all around, and the Muay Thai community in Toronto is well aware.

Old School Muay Thai

What a heartbreaking review to read. As a family-owned business that barely survived covid and yet has continued to work to keep membership costs reasonable while providing the level of training highlighted in 100 reviews on this thread, that lands hard. One core reason we exist is to operate as a social enterprise in support systemically disadvantaged individuals of all genders, and provide a safe place for anyone who walks through our doors. We are aware of only what you shared which seemed more related to relationships at the gym and not the gym itself, and that was addressed. As common with most gyms, we do not refund our very affordable memberships -- this is in the terms agreed to at the time of registration. As you know, our members get access to more than classes and training. They join a community. Sometimes there are points of conflict, and we cannot deny you your feelings, of course. We are very sorry that you felt you needed to come at us in this way, but we still wish you the very best. Take care.

Fantastic experience: I am so glad that I joined Old School. The community of people in the gym itself makes it so worth it. The instructors are all incredible, the class lessons are always amazing and they take the time to help people individually as well. As a woman in the gym i’ve always felt safe and welcomed since day 1. Everyday I look forward to going to Old School and seeing my teammates and Krus. Thank you Old School for all you do for us!

And thank you for being one of us. It is our Muay Thai family that makes us a caring community.

Fantastic experience: I love OSMT. I was born and raised in Thailand and OSMT is perfect remedy for homesickness reason being the trainers are very supportive and incredibly passionate about Muay Thai similar to trainers back home. They are true to being “old school”, it really feels like a Muay Thai gym you’d visit in Bangkok. I really recommend going because for whatever reason you want to learn the discipline (weight loss, endurance building, learning Muay Thai) you will be highly satisfied. The trainers will motivate you and you will be motivated to go back whenever you have the chance. Thank you so much OSMT!! Kru James and all the trainers that help me reach my goals.

Fantastic experience: Just had my first class and can’t wait to go back! (Provide I take a few days to recover.) Is it hard? Yes. It’s Muay Thai… Is it fun? Heck yes! I was nervous to try something this hard and out of my fitness and comfort level, but James and all of the students were nothing but supportive and welcoming. Recommend for sure!

Fantastic experience: Love this gym! Pure old school Muay Thai as the name implies, train like they train in Thailand! Instructors are friendly and knowledgeable. Whether its your first time wrapping your hands or a seasoned fighter or anything in between, James can help you learn, hone and perfect the art of eight limbs!

Fantastic experience: I've started attending classes after Stage Two Reopening. During the whole lockdown I'd been doing nothing in terms of sport so I worried if I could handle it. But all my concerns were unreasonable as classes are flexible and suite all fitness levels as instructors would present several options of exercises. And it is such fun, time flies! I am incredibly happy that I've started going there - each week I can feel that I become a bit stronger. Also the atmosphere there is amazing, people are super friendly and there is a feel of community which is so nice

Fantastic experience: I recently joined Old School Muay Thai, coming out of COVID and having done almost no physical activity for a very long time, and it has been such an amazing experience. I have had no concerns re COVID with both the indoor and outdoor classes. I was also worried that my fitness level would be inadequate and that I would struggle to adapt to the class, but the instructors have been incredibly supportive and always provide alternate approaches for a beginner like me but also are great at challenging the more advanced people. I've tried one other Muay Thai place in the past, but this place has exceeded my expectations so much, the quality of classes, the experience in teaching Muay Thai technique, the authenticity and real community feel are just some of the impressive things. Highly recommend!

Hao Tian 4 years ago

Fantastic experience: Amazing and welcoming Muay Thai gym that accommodates to all levels of people. Enough good words have been said about this place, but its 7:30 am class is the only reason that makes me wake up early in the morning.

Fantastic experience: I’ve trained in many gyms since I started training Muay Thai 15 years ago so I know it can be tricky to find a good one. When I moved from Madrid to Toronto, I visited almost all the gyms located downtown. I signed up for a 2 week special offer at Old School Muay Thai and by the end of the trial I already knew it was a very unique space. The gym is open every day of the week and offers different training schedules at different times, so no matter if you’re an early bird or rather train during your lunch brake or late at night, you can always get your training done! The people who you will find training at Old School May Thai composes a very mixed group: there are really skilled full trainers and even fighters who compete, intermedium level individuals and beginners. The advanced people really understand that everyone is a beginner at one point so they make sure beginners feel comfortable to learn Muay Thai the right way. That is one of the reasons the gym is so popular and beginners show fast improvement at an early stage. The environment is ideal for development no matter at what stage you are in your Muay Thai journey. The training style is like the way Thai fighters train in Thailand. The sessions are sweaty and intense, mixing cardio, conditioning and technique. The friendly, welcoming and intense atmosphere keeps everyone motivated to try their best and improve fitness. Since I started training at Old School Muay Thai 2 years ago, I have become the best version of myself in terms of fitness and technique, and I’m proud of being part of such a friendly and special community. There’s no gym like Old School Muay Thai in Toronto.

Fantastic experience: Old school Muay Thai is a great gym!! I’ve been going there on and off for the last couple of years and I cannot wait until it’s back open. Kru James is friendly, knowledgeable and always there to help you grow. If you’re looking for a fun way to get in shape physically and push yourself mentally then stop by Old School Muay Thai!!!

Erica Mach 5 years ago

Fantastic experience: I've been at Old school for 4 years now. I first started with personal training with Kru James Hines (owner) and he taught me strong fundamentals. After about 6 months I started doing the classes and eventually fought 4 times! I wouldn't have been able to grow without the great instructors and strong community in this gym. I highly recommend people to check this place out.

Michael Major 5 years ago

Fantastic experience: Great gym with an enthusiastic community of individuals committed to Muay Thai and its growth in Canada.

David Paquette 6 years ago

Fantastic experience: Trained at a few gyms, and this one was the best. Stays true to its name. No frills, but you will sweat, learn and leave better than when you entered. James is an awesome instructor who will have you laughing through the pain of the crazy conditioning sessions you’re put through each class. Highly recommend!

Alek Jovanovic 6 years ago

Fantastic experience: I’ve been training here since 2007 and OSMT has made a tremendous positive impact on my life by teaching me the principles of Muay Thai as a martial art and how they cross over to life. The gym has also introduced me to a community of tight knit members that have been training here regularly, everyone is welcoming and positive. This couldn’t be possible without a great gym and great teaching.

Fantastic experience: Great gym with solid instructors and a very open and positive community vibe. James Hines runs this gym as a not-for-profit, using his (very modest) monthly membership fees to run an after-school program for at-risk youth in the GTA. Whether you're training to fight, or just looking to get fit, this is the place to go.

Fantastic experience: Absolutely fantastic. The instructor was methodical, encouraging, and creates tasks that were both challenging and achievable.
