Vertically Inclined Rock Gym: Opinions
Positive experience: A great place to have fun and build mustle
Fantastic experience: Definitely one of the biggest and funnest rock climbing gyms i've ever been to this is my go to they have nice staff and it very clean despite how it looks in the pictured this place is my go to and i definitely recommend going here
Fantastic experience: Great place to boulder and the staff are awesome!
Fantastic experience: Took my kids there for their first rock climbing experience. They both enjoyed it!
Fantastic experience: Great staff and fun lead routes.
Fantastic experience: Lots of wall space and variety of routes. Good instructors. Our group of beginner climbers had a great time even though most were afraid of heights before trying it out!
Fantastic experience: Great place to climb. A good variety of routes. Friendly helpful staff. Grat atmosphere!
Fantastic experience: Took my kid there over the winter break. The staff there was super nice and made the introduction to rock climbing super fun and informative. The gym has different levels of setting for all skill level climbers. My kid can't wait to go back again.
Fantastic experience: Great place, well priced. My son loved it. We are from out of town so a super fun experience.
Positive experience: I only did the bouldering; they have a decently large selection and lots of beginner routes
Fantastic experience: Best climbing place in Edmonton, I've been and had membership to Vertically Inclined, Factory, Boulders, and Blocs. Among them, only Vertically Inclined has a friendly environment and precise safety orientation from staff. They have the best service and best price deal for membership and classes. They have so many routes compared to others, and all the routes are maintained well. This place is a little small but cozy.
Positive experience: Vertically Inclined is a great place to do some climbing in Edmonton. It is affordable and there is tons of equipment to rent if you do not have your own. The staff are also super friendly and helpful. I enjoyed my time at Vertically Inclined but found that the routes are sometimes not as well marked/as clear as other gyms. The easy climbs are also harder than the easy climbs at other gyms. I feel Vertically Inclined may be better suited to climbers who have more experience. Nevertheless, I still thoroughly enjoyed my visit and enjoyed the variation of walls and climbs and plant to return in the future.
Fantastic experience: I was looking for a chesterfield and thought the name of this business was Horizontally Reclined. Upon entering, I saw no comfortable reclining furniture. When I inquired with the young man at the reception desk, he smiled and offered to "harness" me. I paused. I admired his forward approach, and, after a moment to sign some "safety waiver," I thought: 'This is going better than expected!' I had a good time in that harness and I hope others did to. Great place to run up walls, but terrible place to buy furniture.
Fantastic experience: I can't wait to bring my daughter here to climb when she's a bit bigger.
Positive experience: Took my son here for a b'day party. He had so much fun and talked about it for over a week afterwards.
Fantastic experience: My son absolutely loved summer camp here! He had so much fun, learned new skills and came home happily tired each day.
Fantastic experience: Great!!!!
Fantastic experience: Attended a bday party...great time had by all. Knowledgeable and patient instructors.
Fantastic experience: My 2 boys absolutely Had a blast there today! Already asking when we can go back! Wonderful atmosphere and staff was excellent
Fantastic experience: Fun indoor place to exercise in a safe way. They provide special climbing shoes. You can buy a few snacks and water inside.
Fantastic experience: It was spring break recently and me, my cousin and sister in law brought my niece and nephews here, they are ages 8-13? I once went here when I was in high school myself back in 1999? Something like that. I have to say the place was in good condition. The staff were great and the kids had fun. We were there for only an hour or so, which is more than enough time for the kids to have some fun. We got the family pass or something, my sister in law paid, literally grabbed my debit card out of my hand so I couldn't pay... well played Pubiji. Its an interesting afternoon, there's easy walls all the way to some challenging ones. All the kids were able to find something they could reach the top on. Staff were really good, you could tell they enjoyed their jobs. Near the end of our visit a bunch of spring break camp kids came in and were going about, so it became busier. I will say even as an adult who wasn't climbing I enjoyed my time holding the rope for the kids, it keeps you engaged and its kind of fun for an hour.
Fantastic experience: Great first experience and staff was excellent.
Fantastic experience: We planned our daughter's birthday party at Vertically Inclined and it was fantastic. The instructors were very helpful and skillful at getting all the kids climbing quickly!
Positive experience: Great place, whish they had a room to host the birthday parties that they book.
Fantastic experience: My favorite climbing gym in Edmonton
Positive experience: Decent staff ,very patient ,grandkids go there every year and love it
Negative experience: GO to CLIP and CLIMB They charged me $40 for a 6 year old, when I asked why, seeing the adult pass was $20 they threatend to kick us out because I was being rude.
Fantastic experience: Fun place and the instructors are very helpful! As far as I understood, the walls have different levels of difficulties so everybody can find something to make them happy. The place has a really nice and well staffed souvenir store on site which was a pleasant bonus!
Positive experience: Well designed for the space its in. Only a few self belaying units. Bouldering cave is cool but hard!
Fantastic experience: Had a blast. Get instructions and the employees were very helpful and kind.
Fantastic experience: VIRG is a terrific climbing gym. Memberships are affordable, the establishment is well maintained, but beyond all else, the staff are incredible! Staff are always willing to recommend routes and make suggestions when you’re stuck on a wall; they are patient, extremely friendly and knowledgeable; and regardless of your age or expertise, they run terrific courses that teach you new skills. Highly recommend VIRG!
Positive experience: It is such a nice place the pictures make it look really big but its mostly the angles there's 3 types of climbing. Bouldering ( no rope and certain height) Theres an auto belay where you climb to the top and jump off and it slowly rappels you then theres lead climbing where you tie yourself in and your partner also ties themselves in to slow your fall if you do fall. Its a really nice rock gym there's drinks (not free) they provide you with everything (harness, chalk, chalk bag, climbing shoes) they don't provide you the chalk until you ask. The prices I think are reasonable especially if you have your own equipment. Overall the place is very cool and would recommend it to all.
Fantastic experience: Great experience! Really good prices, way more affordable than I’d have expected and Jason was really helpful! I was expecting well over 150 but for 3 of us it was only 90 ish.
Fantastic experience: So many problems to try! Very fun gym, I would recommend trying it out if you haven’t gone before.
Fantastic experience: Incredible, incredible staff there. They absolutely saved my Bachelor party when some other plans fell through. Really appreciate it! The fellas had a great time climbing.
Fantastic experience: Really helpful and kind staff. Difficult walls, but very fun
Negative experience: The space is very nice and has potential. The gym used to be the best. But it hasn’t kept up with the times. I hadn’t climbed here in years as I live in BC. It would be fine for beginners but if you climb regularly you will be disappointed. Routes are never changed so holds are glassy slick. Routes are marked by tape and walls are covered in all kinds of holds so it is very difficult to determine routes especially footholds. Route setting is uninspiring. Bouldering extra pads are spaced and somewhat dangerous and stiff. The gym has a a great space—5 auto belays. All it needs are new holds and dedicated hold scrubbers and route setters.
Fantastic experience: amazing, everything was perfect, the staff, climbing and other visitors.
Negative experience: This place is nice and most of the staff are great however the class that is run on fridays at 4:00pm for the treefrogger 1 program for the little kids it’s not a good environment at all. The young boy that runs that program is sooooo sooo mean to the children… I don’t feel safe leaving my child there. He’s constantly forcing the kids to keep climbing even when they are tired they could get hurt. He’s always rude, he’s always rolling his eyes at the kids. He’s always bossing them around I have never once heard him tell the children please or thank you. My son hates going here because he is so mean and this so called coach bullies the kids. He should not have a job there and should not be a trainer or a coach. Another grandmother was speaking with me and didn’t want to leave her grandson there because this guy is so mean to the kids. For $400 for a course for your children you should have people run it that are actually good with children. The young girl there that currently as of may 2022 works with this guy at the Friday 4:00 pm class she is good but the guy needs a new job somewhere else I don’t know his name he’s the tall guy young kid dark hair I wouldn’t trust your kids around him he’s a real jerk…. He runs the Treefrogger level 1 class currently as of may 1, 2022 at 4 pm Fridays. I am sorry great place but honestly this guy needs to be fired… You should have surverys at the end of each course to rate the coaches so they know they need to treat these children with love, care and respect and to hold them accountable. Thank you for your time.
Hello, Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns about the Friday afternoon Treefrogs class. We value you and your child's participation in this class and the behaviours you described do not meet our best practices. At this Friday's session we would appreciate a few minutes of your time to discuss plans for this class moving forward. If you have any other thoughts or questions before that time, please forward them to [email protected]
Fantastic experience: Great spot for rock climbing and bouldering. It looks small when you first enter, but there are dozens of routes and specific bouldering both downstairs and upstairs. We have our daughter in lessons and the instructors are great at getting the kids to understand what everything is and become comfortable with the harness and being belayed. Wife and I took the lesson to become certified on belay and that instructor was great also. Staff are incredibly knowledgeable and very friendly.
Fantastic experience: Really great little gym! Nice routes, good team, always enjoy being in this place! :D
Fantastic experience: I took both the Aspire adult climbing course and the Aspire outdoor climbing course. I am excited to learn more! I've been trained by climbers with 10+ years experience and have made friends with a great group of climbers from all ability levels. This is a great facility for all climbing affectionados. I usually lead rope 5.10a and am learning to multi-pitch
Fantastic experience: Vert is always a good time. The girlfriend doesn't enjoy it much as the holds are pretty smooth and slick but it really helps me work on my climbing.
Fantastic experience: The facility is amazing but the part that really stands out was the staff. The gentleman who helped us was truly amazing at what he does, an absolute professional who gave us tips and made sure we were safe the entire time.
Fantastic experience: Great place to have some fun. Friendly staff.
Fantastic experience: Staff were lovely and helpful. Routes were fun. Kind of crowded for COVID but there are policies to limit capacity. Many pricing options.
Fantastic experience: Knowledgeable stAff on the pricey side. LoadS of information delivers what you ask for does challenges in a small area clean facilities.
Fantastic experience: Love the gym, staff are friendly and knowledgeable. The puzzles are changed frequently.
Fantastic experience: When I was young I loved rock climbing and I was good at it. So naturally I though 15 years later I could just do it again and I'd be just as good. While I was wrong about that I still had a ton of fun. Bouldering which I used to think was dumb is actually a blast. I will continue to come here over and over and eventually I'll be able to make it all across a wall without falling off and almost dying.
Fantastic experience: Perfect place for indoor climbing. I signed up for adult semester program ASPIRE. You will receive a comprehensive and complete exposure to the sport. All climbing gears are available to rent and they will guide you thoroughly.
Fantastic experience: The staff were knowledgeable and very kind! Tons of fun!
Fantastic experience: It was my first time there, as my son wanted me to try it with him. I thought we have two hours of this....oh boy... but the time flew by and it was a lot of fun. The people there were super helpful and friendly, and gave us one on one instruction and tips. It was just great, I'd go again.
Positive experience: I would recommend going with friends. It’s a good balance of easy climbs and some that are more difficult.
Fantastic experience: Their kids programs are great, and the camps we're good, too.
Fantastic experience: I’ve been a regular/member here for sometime. I started not knowing how to climb and belay and took one of their classes to learn. Routes are changed often and they have a wide range for different skill levels. Staff are friendly and helpful. Hit up the cave to feel like Spider-Man!
Positive experience: Very nice
Fantastic experience: My favourite gym in town! Very friendly staff, great routes and stuff to climb for hours. I never get bored. Routes change regularly.
Positive experience: So fun! Lots of auto belay and bouldering
Positive experience: Best climbing gym in Edmonton! A nice variety of routes to do. The Boulder routes get challenging really quick for us short people, though
Fantastic experience: Big, old school, rock climbing gym. The staff are friendly and the routes are varied. There is a ton of variability to the wall which is nice.
Fantastic experience: Great instructors and staff. Very safe and fun atmosphere.
Fantastic experience: Stopped by today. Absolutely phenomenal space. It's not a huge gym, but it's got a great variety of dynamic features, and the route setting is superb. I'm normally a stickler for route quality. My home gym in SLC has phenomenal route setters, and a bunch of world class professional climbers are regulars. The setting at Vertically Inclined is directly comparable to the quality back home. Fantastic, and one of the best gyms I've been to. Staff were friendly and helpful, and overall I have absolutely nothing to complain about. 10/10, will be making a point to return every time I'm in Edmonton. See you in November!
Fantastic experience: That Devon guy is such a gem. Not only is he knowledgeable about the gym and climbing but he was also very genuine and easy to talk to. I just like vertically inclined. On a side note : I rolled my ankle and Devon saved the day! He brought me ice and helped me down the stairs all while being super cool. Please give Devon a raise and extra vacation time. Thanks!
Thanks for the note Jessica! Devon IS great and certainly represents what we want Vertically Inclined to be for our climbers. So glad that he was able to help you out and keep things as comfortable as possible. Comments on the performance of VIRG Team Members are always welcome and are valuable in future considerations. Hopefully the ankle heals up quickly and we'll see you in climbing again soon.
Fantastic experience: Chill atmosphere and rad staff. Hidden gem of Edmonton.
Fantastic experience: Super fun time and challenging . Staff were super friendly and helpful. I cant wait to go back..
Fantastic experience: A great challenge and a fun workout. Very attentive staff. I love this place!!!
Fantastic experience: Great time. Awesome service. Awesome layout.
Fantastic experience: Great staff, very helpful, classes are very well run
Fantastic experience: Really great staff, all very knowledgeable. I wish the walls were taller, but the great route setting makes up for it.
Fantastic experience: Been going to VIRG for a long time. It's an old gym but the people are the most chill. Great atmosphere to climb in and meet cool people.
Fantastic experience: The staff was awesome getting my 14 year old & I ready to go, explaining everything & the facility was clean & looked well set up. The prices are awesome, especially student discount etc. I highly recommend this place for families with kids of any ages, I saw parents with kids of every age, there was even a baby in the safe area watching with mom as the rest of the family climbed.
Fantastic experience: Had a lot of fun here with the kids. Staff was friendly and was teasing our girls. They loved it! Lol it was a relaxing environment and I loved the fact that I wasn't climbing but I could still be there and be apart of the experience.
Positive experience: Got dragged here by a friend. Turned out fun. Safety is their middle name.
Fantastic experience: Great environment. Good place for kids.
Fantastic experience: The instructors are great - they were awesome with my son and his friend who are very energetic.
Fantastic experience: It’s like climbing outside!
Positive experience: Our home gym. Staff is friendly and there is plenty of routes for all types. Go climb! A great couples exercise as you are competing with yourself, not anyone else.
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff and lots of variety!
Fantastic experience: They gave me carrots
Fantastic experience: Looking for a rock climbing gym with good deal so I looked the Vertically Inclined Rock Gym.
Fantastic experience: Excellent place for kids to learn how to climb! Thoroughly recommend the summer camps!
Positive experience: I booked Vertically Inclined Rock Climbing for an end of year party and I was pretty impressed by the price and the amount of time we got. The reason I’m giving them only four stars instead of five is because they don’t have a separate room for the actual party space. On the positive side the kids had a great time. They loved learning a new skill. Remember it is a bit of a learning curve but once you get it it’s fun to come back!
Fantastic experience: great place to go for partys
Fantastic experience: My son has been doing a climbing program at Vertically Inclined for a while now and really enjoys it. The instructors are great, really helpful and good at figuring out where to push a little bit, in order to challenge the students and improve their skills.
Fantastic experience: Took my 4 year old son there staff was great and he had great time!
Fantastic experience: Great staff here. Very professional and helpful. Lots of variety with the walls - scrambling, caves and more! Definitely worth a visit!
Fantastic experience: Good!
Fantastic experience: The friendliest gym with the largest selection of routes! Great beginner to advanced problems and such a welcoming atmosphere. Bonus: no bros climbing without shirts on!!
Positive experience: Staff are super friendly. Routes can be confusing as they’re marked with stickers and not set with the same colour holds, if that’s what you’re used to.
Positive experience: Great place to boulder, top-rope or lead climb. My biggest complaint is the combo of bouldering and top-rope on the same wall, it can feel cramped at times. Also, the upstairs boulder lounge seems to be closed to the public the few times I've been. But overall, lots to do here and training areas as well.
Fantastic experience: Very fun if your board they have funny staff and amazing knowledge about rock climbing would do again
Positive experience: Great fun! Good exercise. Very helpful staff and educational support. Loved it
Fantastic experience: I've never really rock climbed before, so I was a little nervous. The instructor was excellent and made sure the entire group was well prepared, educated, and confident. Awesome variety of walls. So much fun. Would totally pick this up as a hobby because of this experience.
Positive experience: Went with 4 stars because I love the bouldering there so much, but the lead and top rope sections are both outdated and overcrowded. It's old school route setting, with tapes everywhere and random hold types making a "route". No volumes and pretty much no slabby routes. To make things even worse, the place is badly lit, very cramped, and seems to be constantly running kids birthday parties, which can make belaying in lead somewhat uncomfortable when they are running around everywhere. The boulder section however, is awesome. Long open feet traverses, overhanging tunnel, and super interesting problems. I come back to this gym often, but it is never with a harness on.
Fantastic experience: Great medium size climbing gym. Staff are friendly, informative and focused on safety! This facility offers courses for beginner to advanced climbers and has a great variety of boulder, auto-belay, top rope and lead climbs as well as a cave and hang boards for conditioning. Offers school and children's programs as well. Love to spend time here with the inclusive and dynamic climbing community VIRG has created!
Fantastic experience: Great gym, knowledgeable staff. A little pricy for drop-in, but a membership is quite reasonable.
Fantastic experience: Great place for kids birthday party
Positive experience: My boy is in classes and he loves the instructor
Fantastic experience: very good i enjoy rock climbing except im horizontally inclined not vertically
Positive experience: Excellent spot if you’re just getting into, or a seasoned rock climber! My only complaint is that it can be tough to find a time to go when it isn’t swarmed by large numbers of children’s groups and birthday parties.
