Our comment from FitFit Canada about Athletic Centre:
Welcome to the Athletic Centre in Toronto, Canada! This facility offers a wide range of impressive amenities for all fitness enthusiasts, making it a popular choice for both University of Toronto students and community members. Here are some highlights from user feedback:
- Excellent and spacious gym facilities, with a well-equipped weight room that caters to various fitness needs.
- Beautiful and well-maintained Olympic-sized swimming pool along with additional pools for recreational and competitive swimming.
- An outstanding variety of sports facilities, including indoor courts for basketball and volleyball, and dedicated areas for gymnastics and calisthenics.
- Friendly staff and well-organized programs, which are particularly appreciated by families and students.
- Convenient access to multiple sports activities and fitness programs, though it can get quite crowded during peak school seasons.
However, there are some areas for improvement:
- Concerns about locker room privacy and security, with reports of theft and crowded conditions.
- A number of users have expressed disappointment over the closure of the steam room and sauna facilities.
- Staff engagement at the front desk has been noted as inconsistent, with some users feeling overlooked.
Despite these criticisms, the facilities at the Athletic Centre continue to shine, offering ample opportunities for physical training and recreational activities. A wonderful place for fitness enthusiasts!
Athletic Centre: Opinions
Negative experience: Attended as a student and liked the facilities best of the three U of T gyms. Probably not somewhere I'd pay to attend in the future. Facilities were good -- I liked how much space there was in the main gym as well as the actives offered. Weight room was completely sufficient. The pools are great and I've spent quite a bit of time in both over the years. The 50m was underchlorinated last I was in. My biggest problem were the locker rooms. Disregard for privacy (lots of cell phone use), sometimes smelled a bit dirty and way too many locker break-ins. Desk staff took a report when my shoes went missing but nothing came of it. Overall, excellent for athletic individuals looking for a good workout with plenty of space to move.
Negative experience: quite a deterioration recently not member focused at all. Saunas closed and towel service stopped. Pandemic was the excuse, now said to sustainability. Decisions made have nothing to do with members. Staff can be friendly but they rarely look up from their phones
Negative experience: For some people at the front desk, if you don’t like your job just don’t do it, DO NOT give your attitude and roll your eyes to students! We paid tuition for it! THANK YOU for your cooperation!
Positive experience: Overall it is a good gym with lots of equipments. It gets very crowded when the school starts. Also sometimes the filter in the water dispenser is not replaced in time.
Negative experience: Apparently they’re permanently closing the steam room. I mean this is Toronto, a pretty cold place and UofT is a world class university. They invest millions in funding random initiatives but apparently when it affects all the students and is a necessity it’s not worth their money or energy. I do see a new section of goldring being worked on, maybe that’s planned to have a recovery section. If that’s the case, I’ll delete this review because the University will still be providing these facilities to their students. That’s all I really care about tbh, it’s warm and sunny out now but I really do love a good steam session in the winter months.
Fantastic experience: Both of my kids have taken lessons here. The programs are very well-organized. It's a clean center with professional staff.
Fantastic experience: Loved the experience
Fantastic experience: The range of facilities on offer is impressive.
Fantastic experience: Outstanding facilities as expected. I've been here a few times for my son's gymnastics and for volleyball on the top level. Staff is friendly. Well organized.
Positive experience: Great facility, plenty of equipment to work with. However, I must pile on the criticism of the steam room closure. That was 90% of the reason I chose to return after covid and buy a winter pass. Not likely to renew if it continues to remain closed. I was willing to tolerate extra travel time for that amenity.
Fantastic experience: Nice sports centre.
Positive experience: Older building with multiple exercise options on site. Swimming, weight training, calisthenics, gymnastics, court sports, and dancing are possible in this facility. Most of the facilities are accessible to the public with a membership or day pass, but gymnastics and the dance floor require reservation / lessons.
Positive experience: The track feels absolutely incredible under your feet, undoubtedly the best I have ran on. The reason for 4 stars is there is not a sprinting lane, and there is not a banked 200m track, it's simply flat.
Negative experience: Title: Disappointed with the Permanent Steam Room Closure This move reeks of financial considerations taking precedence over the well-being and satisfaction of the university's members, and it is incredibly frustrating. The lack of transparency in this decision-making process is also disheartening. It appears that the university has simply opted for an easy way out by sacrificing an essential facility for the sake of saving a few dollar. I hope they take the users feedback and reopen it soon.
Fantastic experience: WOW!
Negative experience: Get a membership at Hart House or somewhere off campus instead. Stuff gets stolen from the locker regularly and yet they don’t give a damn. Too many closures during public during holidays. Definitely not worth the money.
Fantastic experience: Connecting university campus, phys(Ed) and kine, but unclear sometimes because- upper or lower gym doors can be open and fully occupied or: empty but booked by community.
Fantastic experience: Wonderful place. Our kids go there for U of T summer camps. Always full of happy people and very clean. If you live near campus and want a place for all sports and exercises, you have to check it out. I also like that thanks to the BBQ place across the road, the outside air smells great.
Positive experience: Ok sports and recreational centre within downtown Toronto, that is open both to the public and University of Toronto students. Has a decent variety of drop-in/registered programming options from workout groups to individual training. I will note it can be tedious sometimes to know when some programming is cancelled as you'd need to be following their social media pages to know if that's the case. The strength and conditioning centre is probably the best place in the AC. Lots of ellipticals, weights and cardio machines to choose from. Likewise, there are women only hours, which is a bonus as the atmosphere inside can feel very intimidating for newcomers. Only downside I'd say is that locker rentals are a bit of a tradeoff. Temporary day-lockers are actually much bigger rental lockers, which are about half the size comparatively. There are some spaces with tables and chairs that contain charging outlets, which prove to be helpful in a pinch if you're a student needing to submit an assignment last minute.
Fantastic experience: Impressive facility
Fantastic experience: Amazing
Negative experience: As a member of the lgbtq+ community I feel very let down by the facilities here. During the last few years I have been waiting for the steam room to reopen as that has been an important part of coming to terms with my identity. Until this is reopened I feel incredibly unwelcome and unheard in this apparently “inclusive” community. Please fix this. That being said, the pool is very nice.
Fantastic experience: Delicious smell of pool and banana peels
Negative experience: It has served me well over the years but can we please open up the steam room. It’s been closed since 2021 and I don’t see why it hasn’t been reopened.
Fantastic experience: Jim
Fantastic experience: Attendants gave me a band-aid when I needed it
Fantastic experience: Best Olympic sized pool in downtown Toronto. You need a membership to use the pool, which is available to all U of T students as part of their student fees, but also available to community members who pay a monthly or annual fee. The pool offers daily lane swimming, springboard diving, and rec swimming times for members. Changerooms are vast and there's a steam sauna and showers. There's also a family changeroom for people who need more privacy. It is also rented (in full or in part) by local aquatics clubs such as diving, scuba, water polo and synchronized swimming clubs, which you can join separately.
Fantastic experience: Awesome place
Fantastic experience: Good equipment
Fantastic experience: Well-maintained Olympic-size pool!
Fantastic experience: Very big Sports center belonging to Toronto University. Olímpic size swimming pool, big indoor running track and many more different rooms for different sports. They provide also camps for kids
Positive experience: It's pretty good location, lots of functions. Although the kids classes are a bit hard to sign up due to popularity.
Positive experience: It has good facilities (e.g. gym, swimming pool, changing rooms etc), but I wish they had dedicated places to play ping pong/table tennis.
Fantastic experience: They have a good all around gym for all oly, body building, crossfiters, track sports swimmers etc. They have a weight lifting room where you can drop the weights with eleiko bars and rogue racks. York bumpers. I’m visiting from Vancouver bc it was the best gym I’ve been to so far. Better than good life imo. Would come again.
Positive experience: Such a cool brutalist building. If you find yourself in the area you should look in. Lots of great details to take in.
Positive experience: Great place to workout! Some of the equipment is a bit broken though, but that's alright, you'll still get muscles here. The staff at the front desk is ok but the staff inside the facilities is very nice. Will be returning often.
Fantastic experience: The strength and conditioning area is always packed and has an ugly layout. I prefer Goldring for that. But I love the pools at the AC, the field house, and the places to sit and relax. You will always run into kinesiology professors in the hallways.
Fantastic experience: Great Athletic Centre at University of Toronto with large swimming pool and a gym with everything needed for physical training.
Fantastic experience: Great gym! +1 seated calf raise, +1 tib bar, +1 ladder would make it very close to perfect
Positive experience: Pools are too busy. Could do with a refurb
Positive experience: No more towel service. And the steam room has been shut down. Re-opening it has been deemed 'too dangerous. '
Negative experience: Lockers are broken into and thefts occur everyday.
Fantastic experience: Good indoor basketball court facilities to shoot around. Can also rent basketball for free.
Positive experience: Just be careful of your belongings and don't leave anything valuable in your lockers. I had my locker broken into a number of times.
Fantastic experience: It's got a good swimming pool and gym. A LOT of fit ppl around too lol.
Positive experience: Great pool and stands for what you may need. Divide up the lanes many different ways depending on what’s going on
Fantastic experience: Great pool. Adjustable short course/long course pool. Large space. Good changerooms.
Fantastic experience: Nice new renovated gym rooms
Fantastic experience: Go Varsity Blues!
Positive experience: mainly UofT students and staff attend here. “Community members”, non-staff and members of community can also attend here. It’s a large building with a variety of gym equipment and activities available. There is a 50m pool, 25 yard pool and a kids size pool, swimming lessons and swimming activities are available too.
Positive experience: Good place for working out if you are a uoft student, otherwise don't bother.
Fantastic experience: Nice gym to work out with friends, everything to keep us healthy and in shape.
Negative experience: Massively downgraded post covid. Gone are the Weightlifting platforms and the layout is so bad you cannot even deadlift. Machines were also moved out of the weight room to the tracks, what non sense! Would not recommend.
Fantastic experience: Nicely adapted from COVID. Great service for UofT faculty and students.
Fantastic experience: Pretty nice facilities for uoft students
Fantastic experience: Great!
Positive experience: It's a good gym but usually pretty busy even during covid. Not enough light dumbbells and the machines are lacking. I Only go here if I can't go to Goldring.
Fantastic experience: Great place for workouts. It has all range of sports and activities.
Negative experience: morning staff (she/her) who check a booking at the entrance is very rude, she was not willing to help at all even though there was booking error systematically.
Fantastic experience: Amazing gym facility, staff are friendly an able to answer all your questions. Currently with Covid with there online platform is amazing to navigate an easy to understand Highly recommend the facilities
Fantastic experience: The AC rocks. So many fond memories here while I was a student, and also post-studies. Just a solid place with great people. Highly recommend membership here - so much better than any commercial gym chain - plus you get access to other U of T facilities - like Goldring. Extra discounts for alumni, recent grads, seniors.
Fantastic experience: Hands down, one of the best sport complexes in Toronto. From basketball courts to olympic side pool, from martial art clubs to ballet classes, indoor track. Just lovely!
Negative experience: Overdue review but during my time here (2006-2010) the staff were just the worst. Esp the facilities manager ; miserable man who went out of his way to be off-putting to students. I spent my last three years working out at Hart House after - much more pleasant there!
Fantastic experience: Lots of fun
Positive experience: Good services, the gym isn't very organized though.
Positive experience: If you’re not a student and looking for a community membership i would pass. Not worth the price and culture is a bit toxic at times.
Fantastic experience: Lovely experience full of great competition
Fantastic experience: Right in the downtown area and great place to have fun and swim
Fantastic experience: the water is quite a pleasant temperature
Fantastic experience: Value for money. Excellent fascilities for a student. Provides a more all round experience in comparison to hart house and goldring
Fantastic experience: Great gym, lots of space, running track and two pools
Fantastic experience: Good air
Fantastic experience: Just had to drive over a delivery and it was my first time here and wow! Beautiful place! Looked like all of the kids were having a great time!
Positive experience: Facilities are good but parking is not great around it.
Fantastic experience: Best pool this side of the atlantic
Fantastic experience: 50m pool with great lighting! Shout out to coach Kelvin from Oannes; coach Ayesha from Team Atomica; and coach Tereza Macel from TMac!
Fantastic experience: I'm doing my exam here and I'm sad
Positive experience: The pool and installations are clean. The temperature of the pool is very good, not too hot not too cold. The staff treat you with respect and gives you the right information when you ask for questions.
Fantastic experience: Love AC!
Fantastic experience: Its awesome
Fantastic experience: Excellent multi purpose Gym with swimming Pool.
Negative experience: Although the equipments are complete and good, I hate its vibe and atmosphere. It is always crowded. I always regret to chose AC instead of Goldring Center.
Positive experience: Solid, has what you need to get in a good workout or whatever activity you wanna take part in, really good spot for pick up games.
Fantastic experience: The pool is nice
Fantastic experience: Great place to gym, especially being a UofT student. Easy to get in, and lots of facilities. Lots of drop in sports are held here too due to the several courts this place holds. Has several entrances to access this large facility. Plenty to do!
Fantastic experience: Do you love swimming?. Will you're love this place. Beautiful pools. Nice and clean with a nice atmosphere
Positive experience: Love using the 50 meter pool when its open to the public. the full 50 m is only available a certain times. Check the schedule at U of T
Fantastic experience: Great place to meet new people and join them in a game
Positive experience: Pretty good
Negative experience: Tennis courts here are absolutely unplayable. Compared to a normal court, the ball bounces 5 feet forward and way too high. Nets are also like 5 inches too high.
Fantastic experience: They have an amazing pool
Fantastic experience: An amazing facility.
Fantastic experience: Large gym, has a swimming pool. Definitely crowded.
Fantastic experience: No i didnt visit that place
Fantastic experience: Huge complex covering virtually everything you can think of. Memberships are not limited to students so non-U of T academics/personnel may purchase a membership. Lots of programs to choose from for both children and adults.
Fantastic experience: Nice.
Positive experience: Nice swimming pool and locker room. The swimming pool is a little bit old and crowded but it’s a good place for lap swimming.
Fantastic experience: This place is well built!
Positive experience: Large pool, mezzanine is clean. Sometimes it’s confusing to find an unlocked door to the pool (from the outside).
Positive experience: Meh. The facility always smells a little weird and varsity players aren't always the friendliest people, but otherwise cool
