YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce, Health, Fitness & Aquatics

Negative experience: This gym honestly sucks. The equipment and stuff is clean and good, but it is always busy and people and staff let kids run everywhere, even up in the gym area. I've seen little kids using machines in flip flops. The weight area is basically men only because the gym does nothing to welcome women in these areas, when they could easily making the smaller stretching area women only, they already have benches and weights there or set an hour for women only. The pool is completely inassecible to anyone that works, the managers are rude to staff in front of customers. I've had several men approach me to mansplain that im doing something wrong even when I have headphones on and fully reject it. Honestly if this wasn't the ONLY location in Owen Sound that worked for me I would have left ages ago. The only redeeming quality is that the front desk staff is very nice and kind and professional, even when they are every other faculties and customers punching bag.

Fantastic experience: Excellent facility. Lots of classes. Friendly well-trained professionals make fitness fun! Always clean. Enjoy the coffee area and met new friends to gather there.

Negative experience: I’m an out of town member and have visited many times. This is one of the nicest YMCA facilities in Ontario. I’ve never reviewed a Y but I gave 2 stars because they either don’t have or don’t enforce a scent policy on the gym floor. It was very unpleasant having to attempt to avoid one specific individual wearing way too much cologne for an hour. It smelled awful and I found it to be inconsiderate of others. I think everyone on the floor was aware of this but I can only assume staff are too scared to have that uncomfortable conversation, especially considering the offender is a new Canadian. Sometimes you have to have hard conversations if rules aren’t being followed otherwise why have them at all? I write this review for the benefit of other local members. Thanks

Fantastic experience: Helpful and friendly staff! Clean change rooms and work out space. Lots of different equipment, a large verity of classes offered. Great space for the community.

Fantastic experience: An excellent new YMCA in the Owen Sound area. Staff members were very accommodating and helpful. The workout areas were busy but clean. Wasn't a fan of how the cardio and weight lifting areas were laid out. The pool looked modern and clean.

Positive experience: Great facility,but not the best swim schedule, I never seem to see the large pool open for family swims.

Positive experience: Very expensive just for quick 45 min swim $15 they only offer a day pass ... they need a cheaper rate for a short visit

Negative experience: Reactivated my account and charged me after years of not visiting the gym due to COVID. Refund me and I'll remove my review.

Negative experience: Randomly started charging my account more than 2.5 years after I canceled it. Refuse to give me a refund.

Positive experience: On the weekend the gym closes at 3pm and before that it was 2pm. I think alot more families would have memberships if the Y was open until dare I say 9 The Y is a great facility but I think they're leaving alot of money on the table due to limited hours, especially on weekends when families have more time to spend with their kids.

Negative experience: Brutal phone system. Can't talk to a human. Automated system didn't work and wouldn't tell me the open swim times.

Fantastic experience: Just began a membership here this past week. Staff are extremely kind and helpful. And I highly appreciate the Covid protocols and cleanliness. Looking forward to my visits.

Fantastic experience: Have been going to Aquafit each morning for the 9:30 class. I am very impressed with the covid-19 regulations the Y and its staff have in place. Feel very safe and all are to be congratulated!

Positive experience: This is the 2nd week that Deborah and I have been back working out at the YMCA in the conditioning area’s. We do miss the several plus classes we attended before Corvid19. We would like to thank our staff for the wonderful job they are doing welcoming, keeping things organized and very clean.

Negative experience: Great pool and gym but I found the desk staff were disrespectful. We have a family YMCA membership. We came to town for a hockey tournament and were unfamiliar with the facility. When my 16 year old son asked how to get up to the weight room the front-staff member told him, in a somewhat belittling and unhelpfully manner, "You use the stairs". Two days later my son forgot his card in the car. We were watching a hockey game and he went to check if my spouse and other son were coming out of the pool area. He confirmed he was a member but didn't want to sign in because he wasn't going to use the facility. Young people checking on their parents without first signing in is not unheard of at our local Y. The same staff member and another spoke amongst themselves suggesting he was actually lying about being a member; "He's not a member". When I went to call them out out on this one of them immediately stood up with arms crossed - signalling oppositional defiance. I did not raise my voice nor was I rude. I acknowledged that they needed to control ingress but that they had been disrespectful to my son. They would take no ownership of their behaviour.

Fantastic experience: Competitive rates, great equipment, great pool facilities, a 1/6 kilometre indoor track, a multi sport court, and two full size ice/arena surfaces. A good membership program is available as well.
