Fantastic experience: Best y in the city in my opinion

Fantastic experience: Coral at the front desk is a legend, customer service is un paralleled and could in fact rival Mother Theresa. I just moved here and she help me get signed up and ready to join the YMCA. If you are thinking of looking at another gym, think again. YMCA has all the services you need for half the price. I will be here Long term. Again not just the facilities but the customer service I encountered, not to mention the location downtown and the parking it includes.

Negative experience: Abandoned my submission for low income membership. Sitting here getting sicker and sicker with diabetes and not so much as an acknowledgement that I filled out their forms or an explanation as to why they ignored me. Very disappointed. EDIT: They did finally call back but it was a LONG wait compared to the "couple days" they estimated when I applied and not a word of acknowledgement that they received my application.

Fantastic experience: The members plus locker room experience absolutely blew me away! One of the nicest changing rooms I've ever been in. Equipped with any and all the products to shower, hair power tools, a lounge area, tea/coffee, a hot tub and steam room. Highly recommend checking it out! Great experience and very friendly staff!

Fantastic experience: I have visited and worked out at YMCAs all over Western Canada. This morning I had one of the VERY BEST lane swimming and weight workouts of all time. The facilities are first class and MORE IMPORTANTLY the staff are unbelievable. They are happy, helpful, courteous and responsive! You cannot ask for a better environment for all ages. They even let me lock my bike up inside the facility.

Fantastic experience: This is a great place to workout, family friendly, with a wide selection of programs. They also offer a 3 visit pass to potential new members. The staff are pleasant and easy to speak with. I highly recommend Don Wheaton Family YMCA.

Fantastic experience: Love this gym, lots of various activities to do here from swimming, to pickleball, to weight and cardio machines. They've also got Yoga, HITT and other classes available. There is also an indoor track which is conveniently located near the free weights/kettle balls and weight machines, so you can easily add the track to your workout routine.

Negative experience: ** Update: The charges on my account were finally reversed, but not without much frustration on my end. ** I KEEP GETTING CHARGED! I purchased memberships for me and my daughter when it looked like the City of Edmonton rec facilities would go on strike. The next day, the strike was called off and I asked for my memberships to be cancelled. They would not refund the join fee ($26.25), but agreed to apply it as a credit to my account (e.g., for day passes). Not much use, but a nice gesture. Two months on, they have charged me THREE TIMES for monthly membership fees -- almost $260 -- and I haven't been to their facilities once. It's taken several emails and they have still only refunded me for one set of memberships. As I write, I am still trying to explain the error, but they have so far not issued refunds. I might have to dispute the charges with my credit card company at this stage. Such a stressful and frustrating experience, and terrible customer service.

Negative experience: Worst experience ever! This is unfortunate because I used to be a member before covid and decided to drop in today for a pickle ball session. Being a long weekend, I called twice to ensure the court will be open. I was told that the court will be open, we could play pickle ball from 8 to noon, and parking will be validated with drop-in pass. I park in the parkade, get to the front desk, and the guy working there informed me that the court is closed and there will be no pickle ball. In sitting addition, he was being extremely unreasonable as if I made up the story, and he refused to validate the parking. Waste of time and money. Any hopes of me renewing my membership are definitely gone.

Here are a few things I like about the Don Wheaton YMCA: The number one reason is its LOCATION - its proximity, and convenience with parking too! #2 - the COMMUNITY!!! I so appreciate the community you (staff and volunteers) have created here. I always feel welcomed and encouraged to get a sweat on! #3 - the WORKOUTS. These group classes offer various levels of performance i.e. one can be a beginner, intermediate, or high level performer and these classes accommodate each level. #4 - This place is so well managed: always clean, not too crowded, friendly staff and volunteers. The DW YMCA location is so unique. Thank you so much for maintaining a place for the people who spend their workweek sitting in front to come for a relief and release. You are definitely keeping us healthier.

Fantastic experience: no idea what yearly memberships with bi-weekly or monthly payments with no commitment means (no contract maybe?) Ontario YMCA I buy what I need 2 weeks or a month (I travel a lot) Maybe Edmonton YMCA can be a little clearer (also not everyone can afford $700-800 yearly memberships and extra $$$ towel service)

Fantastic experience: Friendly staff and very clean and spacious facility. A vast array of all types of equipment is available. Central location and proximity to my residence. Love to spend 2-3 hrs each day.

Fantastic experience: Visited the Y recently with my young son and the staff were awesome. The front desk attendant Hannah was super friendly and welcoming. When we got into the pool with our son, the lifeguard (didn't get his name) raised the pool so that it would be easier for my son to swim. Great staff and excellent experience.

Fantastic experience: A great location in Downtown Edmonton with 4 hours FREE underground, safe parking for members! A complete facility with lots of natural light so working out is a joy. You’re not staring at a wall. The pool area is glorious with the multi depth warm up pool and 25 metre lane pool. I’m in it 3 times a week! The gym is always bustling with a step class or basketball or pickleball. I have ‘t taken a spin class but the room is always pumping motivational music and I’m hearing cheers come out of the room when I walk by. From yoga to cardio and strength - there is a class for everyone. Restorative, energizing, strength building but most importantly, being part of a community. The staff know your name when you walk in! C’mon down and join the family!

Fantastic experience: Friendly and knowledgeable staff. The group instructors are excellent! The members who attend are also great and assist one another for an even better experience--the "Y" effect.

Fantastic experience: The facility is great and everyone who works there is awesome! The only drawback is they have no signs in the locker room halting phone usage. They say, "don't film" but stop short of banning cell phones in the showers and sauna area. You can't tell if someone is filming on their phone, so not sure of the logic is here? Its very uncomfortable since people do bring their cell phones into the shower and sauna area and you don't know if they are filming. Many people have brought this up to them but nothing has been done to change the signage.

Fantastic experience: I love working out at the Y, the staff are friendly, the facility is clean and all the workout equipment is top notch. I have been a member for more than 30 years and wouldn’t think of working out anywhere else.

The plus facility was great except for dudes sitting naked on furniture, not cool! Needs to be more signage or rule setting with warnings. All and all great experience!

Fantastic experience: I utilize this facility as it's less than a block from where I live. Rarely have I been so impressed with a facility not because of the vast array of equipment but because of the staff. This business actually walks what they talk! Two of their core values are kindness and respect. As with almost all my reviews, it's the staff who make or break the customer service experience. I have to take my hat off to the YMCA staff here who model those values as I recently had an unfavorable experience with another member. The staff handled it professionally, with kindness and respect. I am confident they have earned a lifetime member as long as I reside in Edmonton. I've had my faith in good people restored! Great people! Great value! Great customer service! What's not to like. Highly recommend!

Fantastic experience: Really nice facility. Our family comes here for True Blue swimming lessons. The facilities are clean and appear to be well cared for. Staff are friendly and helpful. The pool is perfect for children’s swimming lessons.

Positive experience: I actually like this gym. Been going for almost a year now. Equipment is good, got bumpers for powerlifting which is the main thing. Only thing I don’t like about the gym is they don’t seem to attract many young adults. I go in mornings so it’s always old people around, as a 20 yr old female it would be nice to workout around people my age sometimes.

Fantastic experience: Very nice place to workout. I come usually in the am and it's a wonderful crowd. Alex, a personal trainer there, is super nice and caring. She loves greeting everyone by name.

Fantastic experience: I love coming to the YMCA gym at Don Wheaton, always clean and the staff and other members are friendly. The classes are great, the bootcamps are awesome. I love that I don't need to remember to bring a lock and the cleaning staff are so wonderful.

Positive experience: I’ve been a member of the mens’ plus for 25+ years and the accessibility has been good in those years. Now the hours are restricted and they are closed on Sundays! Why? I’m still paying the same membership fee but now get less service. Does the Y plan on extending hours and opening on Sunday again?

Fantastic experience: Been going here for over 15 years and seen this place through all the changes. Pre-covid staff are definitely missed. Some of the new staff aren't as well customer service trained as the old staff but the equipment is maintained, they keep it clean and hopefully things go back to how it was because this is the best YMCA of them all!

Negative experience: Drop in fee is $15. Front desk staff member was unfriendly and almost seemed as if she didnt want me to use HER facility.

Positive experience: I cancelled my account 2 years ago, and they just started charging me again for membership? I didn't put the account on hold, I called and cancelled my account. That did not happen apparently, and they would not offer a refund at first. I called back, and they issued 1/2 of the amount. This is acceptable to me. Online Tool/App: I went to cancel/change my online account and the site doesn't allow you to do this! It's completely non-functional when it comes to cancelling or changing membership status. Very shady site functionality. Nice facility downtown Edmonton, but will likely not return. If so, I won't use the automatic withdrawal process.

Fantastic experience: Does anyone else think that fitness facilities are essential, if so the people need to demand that they reopen. Liqour stores are open , malls are open but the gyms are closed. The owners of all facilities need to grow a spine and demand that they be open. Asap!

Fantastic experience: Wheelchair accessibility is great. The facility is set-up for easy access. They offer FES therapy with the RT-300 cycle machines which is ideal for wheelchair users. Helpful staff.

Fantastic experience: Great place to play basketball...everyone gets along well while playing and the gyms on top there are really spacious you can even run and sprint in their mini oval track...great place highly recommend!

Fantastic experience: The group training sessions are amazing in morning .Variety of classes are offered . The Community Canvas hallways is refreshing . Parking is underground which is a relief in Winters . I am attending Allison’s LIFT morning sessions and she is really a nice trainer, she will come forward to give individual tips to improve posture .

Positive experience: This location is very well-maintained and clean. I just wish they had a women only area/room like other gyms.

Negative experience: Parked at YMCA last night for Oil Kings game and after the game at 10:00 the pedway was locked from manulife place and doors were locked from outside. Not a good parkade to park in.

Positive experience: Worst. Staff. Ever. Superb layout, accessible, pedestrian friendly, the plus quarters are spacious. Bring the family, friends, smile & keep your mouth shut. Housekeeping staff are the real heroes. Neither your personal safety, nor security of property come with an ironclad guarantee.

Positive experience: Nice clean place. Good equipment. Locker rooms are kept clean and tidy. For the most part it's a great Y. One problem is one of the staff at the front may need some customer service refreshment courses. Not all, but one in particular. Otherwise, all other staff are really nice and try to listen instead of barking policies left and right.

Fantastic experience: I love the Don Wheaton YMCA! It is always so clean and the staff are so friendly. When I worked downtown, it was so convenient to swim in the morning and/or do classes at lunch. Almost everybody there is working downtown as well, so it's a good peer demographic. My work has now moved and I've since tried other YMCAs in the city, but they don't quite have the same atmosphere or cleanliness. I miss you Don Wheaton YMCA!

Fantastic experience: My family and I love the Don Wheaton YMCA! It is always so clean and the staff are so friendly. My son loves it for his CIT program and the staff, my wife for the swimming pool and I for group classes. It is so convenient to swim in the morning and/or late in the evening. Our Thank you to the management team and staff of YMCA Don Wheaton for giving us this opportunity for using such a clean and beautiful environment.

Fantastic experience: The Y is an amazing place. At first you join just to work out. But then you discover new friends in a great environment. There are lots of drop in fitness classes. The busy times are before work, at noon hour and after work. Otherwise it is quiet. If you join the plus locker rooms you get towels, steam room and a hot tub. There is a nice lounge. Eventually you learn that the YMCA is a charity. Nobody is turned away because families need fitness opportunities and kids need summer camp. I have been a Y member for over 10 years. I wouldn’t belong to any other fitness centre even though the Y costs a little more. Try the Maka Eatery in the main lobby. They offer very delicious lunch items and smoothies. They do a good job on the coffee as well.

Negative experience: Had the worst experience ever with the older lady with long blonde curly hair who never smiles. Never have I felt so condesended and looked down upon. I value that you are non profit but clearly this woman is only in it for the benefits and not working with the public. I hope for everyone’s sake there’s action taken with this specific staff memeber. Otherwise I would advise for everyone else to avoid this woman unless they want their day ruined. Sincerely someone who actually cares about the general public.

Positive experience: Great staff! Nice, clean equipment. A bit too overcrowded with cardio equipment, and a bit of weird layout as of late (free weights spread out far from eachother). Great running track. Nice studio, although when I am able to go it is usually constantly busy with classes! Still nice to have one. Locker rooms however are below average. Smaller lockers, and can get pretty crowded really quickly.
