Our comment from FitFit Canada about Kinsmen Sports Centre:
The Kinsmen Sports Centre in Edmonton is a vibrant hub for fitness enthusiasts and families alike. With a huge range of activities available, visitors love the expansive pool area, clean environments, and friendly staff. The centre features:
- Multiple Workout Areas: Two separate weight training zones, with a variety of machines and free weights suitable for all levels.
- Swimming Facilities: A spacious pool with lanes available for both casual swimming and competitive events, alongside a massive hot tub and dry sauna.
- Sports Courts: Free courts for badminton, tennis, and other recreational sports cater to a variety of interests.
- Family-Friendly Environment: The centre offers numerous programs and activities for children, making it a great destination for family outings.
However, some users have expressed concerns over the facility's crowdedness, particularly during peak hours, and the parking situation, which can be a challenge. Despite these issues, many emphasize the friendly atmosphere and recommend the centre for its cleanliness and range of activities. Overall, Kinsmen Sports Centre is highly regarded as a well-maintained facility that caters to a diverse community of patrons.
Kinsmen Sports Centre: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Love the pool, nice workout areas, and free court rentals (when you're able to get a reservation, they go fast!)
Fantastic experience: Very clean and a very nice building
Fantastic experience: HUGE. So much going on in one building. You could spend the whole day there, easily. I love the track... there are some cardio machines, and then along the track, there are "fitness nooks" with random machines. Mostly to work out legs, but there are a couple rowing machines, a squat machine, and my personal favourite - Jacob's ladder, which is a cross between an exercise contraption and a torture device. Not unlike a hamster ball. Good fun. Much recommend.
Negative experience: I hope Kinsmen gets their act together soon! They have a lot of problems and management is more focused on booking programs (ultimately making money) instead of fixing the problems they have! It is an already overcrowded and cramped facility with very poor accessibility, and instead of maintaining their equipment, they stuff their facility with too many machines and programs! Have you ever heard the phrase “less is more”? Kinsmen hasn't! Maybe if the staff cleaned and organized the facility, then more machines would be okay, but they don't, soooo? The list of issues is quite vast, but the critical one is that the facility struggles to even clock it problems. Thus, nothing gets solved, only perpetuated.
Positive experience: One of the best places to swim lanes.
Fantastic experience: My daughter has her running club here and we love the facilities!
Positive experience: Nice classes and good hours of operations
Negative experience: No food options, broken vending machines, exiting the parking lot is a nightmare. Avoid at all cost if you can.
Fantastic experience: Muti activity arena, the receptionist girls are so nice and accommodating. When I asked for place for prayer they helped me promptly, so I wanted to thank them for their professionalism and understanding.
Positive experience: Had U18 waterpolo tournament there, won only 1 of 3 games, change room and basically whole building a maze to get out of but it's not that bad
Positive experience: We were there for Karate Alberta . Very good venue.
Negative experience: Never any parking at 6pm. (And they decided to close the overflow for the entire summer) Feels like your at an oilers game trying to leave the parking lot. takes 20 mins because of all the traffic
Fantastic experience: Big hot tub me likey
Fantastic experience: For me, the amazing sports centre ever.
Negative experience: Please up the security presence in the weight room. Unstable characters will follow you around. Also, for the amount that I'm paying for membership, the equipment should be newer.
Negative experience: Not the best experience this time. I asked the employee at the front about booking a badminton court because I received mixed information on the phone so I had a couple questions. 10 seconds later, she says "I don't think ppl understand that this is a booking facility" to her colleague ?? Girlie pop has brown hair and an unfriendly face
Fantastic experience: Kinsmen omg I lost my rings but the only one that was.important this beautiful lady victora a lifeguard knew it was mine and put it aside and than Ashley lovely front desk made me dreams come true showing me and knew it was mine They both remembered me and were so kind and still keeping a eye out for the others honestly this one ri g was my worry and they made my day I give my happiness today to those two lovely ladies
Fantastic experience: Free badminton courts with plenty of space. My go to badminton gathering!
Fantastic experience: Good facility and one of the only places in town with a dry sauna
Negative experience: Philip's swimming club is a scam. I don't recommend sending your kids there for swimming.
Negative experience: Good facility, some of the staff however are entitled. Wristbanding everyone else meanwhile letting select others in with no wrist bands.
Fantastic experience: My favorite place ever! I love your hot tub Kinsmen spots center!
Positive experience: It's absolutely humongous, yet somehow all squat racks still taken, i love it
Positive experience: Attended Provincial swim meet. Facility has lots of seating for viewing, but I recommend something padded to sit on. Areas were clean, pools clean, and well set up for meet. Three lifeguards pool side. FYI, there are only two washrooms for very large crowds. Found one if you leave pool and go to side of building that has gym.
Positive experience: Worst parking ever over loaded and the parking people are sorta lost in the moment overwhelmed.
Fantastic experience: We were here for Summer swimming provincials, seems like a great facility, and was very efficient in their ability to move through the races. Top notch equipment for timing and racing. Unfortunately, the large score board on the east side malfunctioned basically the entire time, and the bathroom situation was not ideal. There were a lot of spectators at times the place was filled and there were 2 individual bathrooms available and 2 Porta pottys outside of the building which quickly became less than desirable. It was also very hot and there were no locations where one could hydrate. Nothing for sale, and no water fountains. You would need to leave the venue and if you did that you likely would not find parking again. Great weekend, but room for improvement.
Negative experience: For some reason, this facility only reserves a small amount of parking for regular monthly pass holders during its MANY 4 day swim competitions which run from Thursday to Sunday. Why they aren't doing park and drive with shuttle buses or enforcing carpooling is BEYOND. To everyone complaining about the brutalist architecture: it's actually a beautiful building, and to talk about "renovating" it is to say you want them to demo the building and make something similar to the newer rec centers. This building is entirely made of concrete. Concrete has a MASSIVE carbon footprint. To throw this building away is an egregious suggestion in terms of the environment. Just go to a different rec center.
Fantastic experience: Just rediscovered my love of swimming a few days ago and have been to the pool every day since! This efficiency is awesome! Massive massive hot tub area, lots of lanes to swim and lots of other activities like badminton, tennis, running, pickleball, and the gym is huge etc. This facility offers a wide variety of fitness programs of every level and once they finish their cafeteria it'll be perfect! ☺️I can't get enough of this place it's absolutely wonderful! And it's great for my entire family. We bought the family membership with benefits and it's worth every penny! Not cheap mind you... but again, still worth with! Even the lockers are hassle-free and modern... totally up to date. The lifeguards and staff are super nice too! Cannot recommend this centre high enough! ♀️♀️♀️♀️
Negative experience: Beyond dissapointed. We are at this facility for a 4 day competition. I would say we are supporting this facility same as the patrons who have membership here. We drove from Calgary and we were told there is only 1 water fountain and it is after one passes the gates. Yesterday the kind lady at reception said sure you can go get water from the only working waterfountain we have , unless you are on the pool deck, there are other fountains. The person today said no, we can't allow people to get water you can use the one in the washroom, I asked if he has seen the one next to the sink in rhe washroom. Of course he hasn't because it is a women's washroom. So the question is: there is no water for sale inside of the Kinsmen, there is no vendor. We are seating here at these bleachers from 7:15AM to 8PM and we are not allowed to access the only working water fountain? How about clean the disgusting one in the bathroom, or better, how about building accessible ones to the public. I had to ask a young man who was about to go thru the gates to work out if he wouldn't mind filling my bottle. He sure did. So thank you. Are we going back to crazy covid times? All I wanted was water. To say this is ridiculous is an understatement. No wonder people hate coming to the Kinsmen for competitions.
Fantastic experience: It’s my favourite centre!
Positive experience: Great facility, but if you’re looking to escape the heat DONT book the centre courts! They are almost hotter than the 30+ degree outdoor courts.
Positive experience: Great pool for competition.
Positive experience: We always have great time here, and there's always an activity to help keep the kiddo's well occupied!:)
Fantastic experience: Great lane swim availability
Fantastic experience: Large and expansive facility for pretty much every activity imaginable. A little dated in some areas. Roomy, but can be busy during peak hours.
Fantastic experience: Love the pool, exercise equipment is great and the physio clinic is awesome!
Fantastic experience: Amazing pool. Very big. Very clean. Hot tub is huge. Sauna was great.
Fantastic experience: Nice place for gym, pool, a lot of activities and hot tub.
Negative experience: Know that almost all the time ALL swimming lanes are booked, so avoid this facility if you want to enjoy swimming!
Positive experience: Kinda old a lot of the pools in the city are newer facility's better layout more equipment. The pools are massive but seems to always be booked for lessons or training. The gym has a strange layout, and it's kinda all over the building. It can be good to find quiet spots to work out. the best feature of this location is all the courts for racquet sports and volleyball, basketball. Look forward to the outdoor pool this summer
Positive experience: It's good for what it's intended for. sports. Diving boards are rarely open, it is a sports centre though. Pool is not one I would consider kid friendly. If you are looking for a kid friendly pool, go elsewhere. Parking is very painful, hence the three stars (also, the queen Elizabeth outdoor pool is there).
Fantastic experience: I love it there great experience thank you can wait back after recovery tomorrow having surgery finally
Negative experience: The facility is fine, if you can ever use what you're there to use, which is rare. They could not care less about monthly members, and are only interested in catering to their rentals. On multiple occasions we've had to park as far away as the high level bridge, when for some reason they decided not to open the overflow parking lot. Why is that lot ever closed? Several times I've been unable to get a locker as they are all occupied. The lower track is almost never available, with everyone crammed on the smaller upper track. Likewise with the pool, there are generally only a handful of lanes that aren't rented out. Today they reached a new low when I went to swim, and not a single lane was available. Upon leaving we were told there were 2 lanes available (which is in itself ridiculous), but I walked the entire area and there were no lanes open, just a giant white board saying the pool was closed. I've been coming here for years, but I've had enough and have cancelled my membership.
Fantastic experience: Love this place a lot. Chill staff and amazing facility with tons of racks (especially the lower gym which is usually not packed). Would 1000% recommend as the best rec center in Edmonton.
Positive experience: Facility is great. Parking is a abysmal. The transit options are horrible too. If either of these were fixed it would get a higher raring.
Negative experience: No slide and just two small diving boards, busy with events every time I have visited so I didn't enjoy the public swim time I attended. Would not recommend to others for public swimming.
Fantastic experience: Front desk staff that work Monday mornings are lovely! Tennis court floors aren't the best but is expected from a facility that hosts a variety of sports. Overall, I love Kinsmen!
Fantastic experience: Wonderful pools with lanes available any time for drop-in. Unbeatable.
Positive experience: Really good size building with huge workout area and swimming area. Parking is a mess so if you want parking be early. The swimming events are great but until you go to sit on hard metal bleachers. Just make sure you bring something to sit on for long events.
Fantastic experience: I liked the atmosphere of the structure, everything was clean and very comfortable. Very kind reception service
Fantastic experience: Good in every aspect. Friendly staff, lots of equipment and space for all kind of activities. I wish there was swimming classes for adults too
Fantastic experience: As great as always. I've been going to Kinsmen since childhood, over 25 years. Was in the diving club years ago also and I only have good memories of training there. Went recently and it was a nostalgia bomb to say the least. The ladies changeroom is exactly how it's always been and clean with tons of lockers available and they are free to use. They also have valuables lockers near the front desk which is nice to have access to for extra security. The pools are lovely for a workout or just a dip and the hot tub is very soothing after a workout or to warm up in the Canadian winters. Can't wait to explore this massive facility even more in the future.
Fantastic experience: Mature crowd, fitness center is sperated into two areas. Hot tub is massive. Free lockers in the locker rooms as well. I enjoy having a seasonal locker rental, makes it much easier to keep some items always at the gym.
Positive experience: Love this place. The gym is pretty small, but the drop in classes are great!
Fantastic experience: I drop by the Kinsmen Sports Centre once a week. I have not used the facility itself, but rather service the site. It appears to be a fully established sports center, and I always see a lot of people going in and out. It is also located right next to the beautiful North Saskachewan River. There is also the John Walter Museum across the parking lot, and a few other historical buildings on site.
Positive experience: Kinsmen has excellent and well maintained equipment. I have only 2 negative comments that changed my rating from a 5 to a 4. First is that the track is in dire need of resurfacing. Second, there is a set of steps from the second floor to the track area that is precariously steep and narrow. I know the city is aware as it is part of the eventual rehab plan for the facility.
Positive experience: I had not been there for a long time, and this trip I went was for TKD tournament. I asked the front end staff where to go, she directed me to a place where the gate was locked. I went back to the front end and asked a staff that was coming out of the front counter, she wasn't friendly at all, she just pointed and said you can go down those stairs and she walked away. I didn't get a full direction. I took the stairs down and walked all the way to the other end, and doors were locked. So annoying. It happened someone was coming out of the door, and I was able to go in. I then encountered a very nice staff that I asked questions on how to get in without going through all those walking around. She took the time to show me that entrance 3 would the one I can use when I go the next day( Sat 21st).
Positive experience: Good place to exercise with the addage of being within the river valley it can be the starting point for trails runs, cycling and other outdoor exercises. Inside there's two areas to lift weights, two tracks (upper and lower floor), areas for racquet sports, and a dedicated swimming area. The dry sauna can get a bit smelly towards the end of the day but I swear by it everytime I go there to exercise.
Positive experience: Enjoy the sport center with my family and friend..! Clean, beautiful view
Positive experience: Not a bad place to come and work out but it does show its age. If this is the closest recreation facility to you then it will serve you well. If you can manage to take the LRT then I suggest going to either Commonwealth or Claireview Recreation Centres
Fantastic experience: Beautiful grounds! We went to wander around the park and was very impressed with picnic areas available and free parking. Plenty of space for lots of people to enjoy without feeling over crowded. Excellent water park for kids and adults to cool off on a hot day. Will definitely come back with friends and family to picnic. Great scenery of downtown and the bridge!
Fantastic experience: Amazing! my kids learned more then any other swimming areas and the showers are super clean but one minor issue, the outside showers are very dirty and a lot of misquotes, but just spray bug spray ,they’ll be gone in no time
Positive experience: Great badminton courts except for the ground is concrete (bad for injuries) and the lights above the courts at waaayyyy too bright
Fantastic experience: Nice place if you are looking to play indoor badminton, tennis, ping-pong... Btw book the court online before you come.
Fantastic experience: This place makes sure you feel sporty year round even during winters. Indoor gym, track and 3tennis courts in winter keeps the muscle moving. Great location too.
Positive experience: Awesome place. Membership fees are well priced and the facility is large with basically anything your looking for. Fitness center has an awesome selection of dumbbells up to 120 lbs and many machines. Machines are slightly outdated but they all function properly. Huge indoor/outdoor pool with a large hottub. And massive indoor track. They could definitely use a few more treadmills as there's only like 6 in the entire facility, which kinda sucks. If your in the changerooms when they unleash the thrall of kids from swimming lessons then run for your life. They come in like a swarm of screaming banshees, and combined with the echo in the changerooms, it's one of the loudest, most unsettling things I've ever heard. I've had to rearrange my workout schedule to minimize exposure to this menacing experience. Your also forced to drive across the bridge and go downtown when you leave the facility. But that's just another of edmontons long list of road planning atrocities.
Fantastic experience: Great facility and helpful staff. Love the workout area, everything I need with multiple pieces. Bright and spacious area and large change rooms. Nice to jump in the hot pool after a workout! They offer 2 free trial sessions for newcomers,
Fantastic experience: I love this area for leisure purposes. The area is very family friendly, and the bike trails are awesome. Highly recommended
Fantastic experience: The location is fabulous..and free parking..which is so rare. Pool in summer is fabulous..lots and lots to offer
Fantastic experience: Provides exercise / fitness facilities for athletes, from swimming, diving, field sports, track, etc. Easy access, with clean facilities, & friendly staff.
Positive experience: Im mainly just reviewing the pool here, the main pool is cold and I was shivering after I got out the teach pool is pretty warm though. I really think this place needs a renovation overall 5/10
Positive experience: Good facility overall. The lighting for the badminton courts could be improved. It is slightly difficult to see the shuttlecock when looking up.
Positive experience: Equipment is a bit dated, but it's functional and plenty racks and benches available which is great for people doing real workouts. Pricing is alright, but it gets good if your company gets the Edmonton fitness discount. If your employer doesn't, get on it! I'm not a fan of disposable wipes, but I guess constant washing of clothes isn't any better.
Negative experience: Called the help line to confirm badminton courts were available and the representative mentioned they are first come first serve . No reservations needed . After finding a parking stall and waiting inline for 5-10mins. I was told that all reservations were booked. Astonished by the answer I asked the lady why I was told incorrect information regarding the badminton courts when calling the helpline half an hour earlier. They had no explanation to offer but sorry . Upset due to I drove all the way from Sherwood park to have family time but all ruined due to poor service from an Edmonton run facility.
Positive experience: The facility itself is nice. There are lots of different activities to do. The biggest downside is the massive size of the parking lot. The river valley shouldn't have an asphalt surface this large.
Fantastic experience: Great facility. So much pool space, great running track and exercise equipment.
Positive experience: Went for the cross country ski trails. The trails were set and mostly not trampled. Kids liked that they could ski towards the playground and play there for a bit while hubby got to go for some laps.
Fantastic experience: New years run was epic watching ppl n my wife and friend ran it..
Positive experience: First time ever going for indoor tennis. A very busy active place but the tennis court was okay and the facility was quiet and enjoyable. The crew setup for changeover was run perfectly so our time was well spent. Other court participants were cordial and considerate.
Fantastic experience: Two gym areas and multi purpose rec facility. Located central Edmonton this place has a large parking lot and two level track. This facility is huge and definitely worth the money especially if you also have a community membership (pays for itself).
Positive experience: Although a bit antiquated with some of their equipment and building style, it has everything that one needs. The pool is nice, but very busy Monday to Friday from 430 pm to 630.
Negative experience: I love this place. Never had a complaint me and my wife go there daily. However one person and in this case their janitorial staff on multiple occasions have been utterly rude and this particular person continuously seeks me out since I logged a complaint against her. The person has no understanding of how to treat customers & regulars. Utterly rude and demeaning. I understand if you are having an off day but to constantly be like that? Update: Since I had logged a complaint about the person to management, they have continuously taken time when they see me to either pass a comment under her breath or stand there and stare. I feel embarrassed even writing this as i am a grown family man and I feel like I am back in junior high again or on the streets. Not quite sure what to do but to try to Ignore it which I have been but a very uncomfortable and unnecessary situation if management could have a simply conversation with the person which from their actions seems like it never took place. Other than that a great place. Has everything you can ask for :)
Positive experience: Old but functional. Apparently due for an upgrade in the spring of 2023. Nice indoor tennis courts.
Fantastic experience: Best facility in the city in my honest opinion. Lots of space to workout, pool, track, sauna, tennis, squash and basketball courts... Really all you could ask for. Would highly recommend! It shows it's age in some area's but it is clean and well maintained.
Fantastic experience: Probably the best fitness centre I have been to in the city hands down. The kinsmen has so much to offer if you are a very active person. It’s old school retro design of the building looks beautiful. 2 weight rooms 2 running tracks. Line swim sauna and hot tub . This place never gets boring for me and my partner. Thank you kinsmen staff for a nice clean facility the smiles on your faces when I come and the cross fit instructors that invite us to participate in there classes. Thank you !
Positive experience: Parking is super difficult to navigate, so beware of that! The actual building is quite nice, and next to a friendly playground and park area. It’s quite beautiful in autumn.
Fantastic experience: Great place for recreation. Huge pool, large field and park to hang out. Sometimes it gets crowded on weekends. Just in the foot of the walterdale bridge, a very good place for a morning or afternoon jog.
Fantastic experience: The centre has good equipment and a good area. There's a variety of equipment and treadmills to use, and the layout is so that you can train more publicly downstairs or more privately upstairs. There are both outdoor and indoor pools, although usually pretty busy. The lockers are in convenient spots and the entire gym is well-organized. Reservations and drop-in courts are both available. Fans are always nearby. The centre knows how to keep their customers occupied and entertained. The front staff are very friendly and informative, and the place is kept very clean. The only problem seems to be the parking at the moment, but some part of it is being rebuilt, so that should be resolved soon.
Positive experience: Well run facility centrally located. Easy access with plenty of good parking. Excellent.
Positive experience: Awesome pool but very hot and stuffing inside during swim competition. They could use some sort of food services or more food vendors outside that will take debit. Cash and vending machines were down during tournament !! Not very convenient. Ajoing park facilities very nice but parking was ridiculously bad.
Fantastic experience: A ton of fun here. Great staff and really friendly. Loved the facility especially the massive swimming area and high-dive. I’ll definitely go again even if it’s a little far from my place.
Fantastic experience: Clean and organized center for gym and other activities
Negative experience: the weight room is filthy, the free weights are racked in NO order at all and dust everywhere, fruit flies in the men's shower... seriously not a great facility for the ridiculous price, yes it's big and there is a little bit of everything for everyone but just so cold looking, a bunker! you better go to a fit4less for 10$/month it's very clean and organized. The only reason i go there is the proximity to my place... will update with pictures to back my points.
Fantastic experience: This facility is huge ! I was super impressed by the size of the pools. The hot tub is super big as well. I had a great time swimming here. I haven't tried the gym but I looked around and it looks really nice so I'm excited to use it. Also, the grounds which it's located on are so nice to hang out and walk around in. Especially on sunny days. I wish they had longer hours. 5/5 stars.
Fantastic experience: I love this place, it's been my favorite place for recreational activities, and the environment around it. Makes it a great place here in Edmonton.
Fantastic experience: This is the best facility in edmonton by far
Fantastic experience: My kids and I really enjoyed the park so many things to do there
Fantastic experience: One of the best facilities in the city. Very well maintained and tons of programs and equipment. Highly recommend.
Fantastic experience: For an older building, the staff keep the place up VERY well, and I even here there is a major renovation happening later this year!
Fantastic experience: Beautiful day out !! Ideal for a day picnic and cycling
