Ches Penney Family YMCA: Opinions
Positive experience: This place is about what you could expect from a family YMCA. There's a pretty nice pool (and hot tub) with some good programs to go with it, but my biggest issue is the gym. It has a pretty dull selection of older run down equipment, with the only real highlight being the cardio section. There's only one bench-press machine which is being used pretty consistently so its hard to get a good chest day in, and the overall size of the strength training area is just underwhelming and small. Overall this place is good if you want some simple cardio or a fun time at the pool, but its not so good for people who want to train for strength. If that's you then you're 100% better off going to a place like reps or goodlife (probably not since their signups and cancelations are a scam lol)
Positive experience: To sister and few other seniors who reminded me it was women’s washroom. Thank you To everyone looking at this review, YMCA is the cleanest gym, I ran for 16 minutes and I felt that 16 minutes of run it was amazing, everything is spot on however, the changing rooms are what makes it confusing. Today was my first day and the impression was SPOT ON. The fact that changing rooms when you enter, instead of seeing “women’s changing room” I see “scotiabank” I am sure this mistake happened and can happen continuously if not fixed. Put directions on where men’s women’s and inclusive changing rooms are visibly instead of “scotiabank” or “co theatre 101”
Fantastic experience: Clean and safe place
Positive experience: Pool & gym are nice
Positive experience: Great views, quiet area for cardio and the pool is decent. Weight area needs quite the updating (old cables, torn benches, run down machines etc). I would suggest this for younger people/families along with older folks looking for a quiet place to workout. Found the members to either be 9 or 90....... Not ideal for anyone looking to lift/socialize/work with latest equipment. Family pass runs about $120 a month, which is about the same as 2 Goodlife memberships. So depending on how many family members use the facilities you may be better off using a GL location.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic place with friendly management team
Fantastic experience: Loved it!
Fantastic experience: Just go see it once is the best
Fantastic experience: Best gym in the City
Fantastic experience: Very good place kind staff and a place to enjoy
Positive experience: I was very disappointed by the gym’s policies. The credit card I used for automatic payment had a fraudulent charge and was cancelled. When the payment didn’t go through, I was not notified nor given a chance to provide a new card. Instead, I was told that not only would I be charged an NSF fee, but to reactivate my membership I would also have repay the $75 "joiner fee". This bad policy/algorithm cost the Y a potential member for life. I had mixed views about the facility. The view from the cardio area is magnificent and the pool area is great. However, I was disappointed by the strength training area, which was small and oversubscribed compared to other gyms I have used. The range of strength training machines is limited, there is no proper area with mats (and stability balls, etc.) for stretching and ab work, and some machines, particularly the two cable machines, are frequently monopolized by members for their entire workout. I had to avoid peak hours much more than with other gyms.
Fantastic experience: Great spot for different sports and swimming!
Positive experience: The YMCA in St. John's is a fantastic facility for fitness and community activities. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the facility is clean and well-maintained. There are a variety of fitness classes and equipment available, catering to people of all fitness levels. The pool area is also great, with clean and warm water. The YMCA offers a range of programs for all ages, including swimming lessons, youth programs, and fitness classes. The prices are reasonable, especially considering the variety of activities available. Overall, the YMCA in St. John's is a great place to stay active and engaged in the community. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a welcoming and inclusive fitness facility.
Fantastic experience: Squash courts, basketball, workout area and a pool and a reasonable fee option
Fantastic experience: Good place to spend time with kids!
Fantastic experience: The Y is always welcoming & a great place to workout.
Negative experience: The worst for phone service. Been calling for hours just to see if their pool is open and during what time. They’ve been having issues with staffing for the pool lately so I wanted to make sure it was open before driving in. Literally called 15 times this morning and nobody will ever pick up the phone. It’s always been like this too. Time to get a membership somewhere else
Negative experience: Saturday morning, the front counter staff was very rude, lazy and incompetent. No smiles or welcome greetings, and most of my questions were ignored.
Fantastic experience: It's a charity place with plenty of facilities for members.
Negative experience: I feel compelled to share an unsettling experience I had a month ago. I had an encounter with an individual who appeared to be of Indian male descent, and his behavior was absolutely disappointing. I won't go into specifics, but suffice it to say that the person's actions and words were blatantly racist. It's incredibly disheartening to see such behavior in this day and age. We're all part of a global community, and it's essential that we treat each other with respect and dignity, regardless of our backgrounds. I hope that whoever this individual is, they reflect on their actions and work towards being a better person. Our world is diverse and beautiful, and it's crucial that we learn to appreciate and celebrate our differences instead of resorting to discriminatory behavior. I sincerely hope that the people around this individual will step up and educate them about the impact of their actions. Let's strive for a more inclusive and compassionate society where incidents like these become a thing of the past. This experience has certainly left a bitter taste in my mouth, and I hope that the person responsible for this behavior takes the opportunity to grow and change. Peace and positivity.
Fantastic experience: Great facility. Well maintained.
Fantastic experience: Very clean facilities with very friendly staff.
Fantastic experience: Love going to whirlpool after gym.
Fantastic experience: The guy employee at the front desk was very polite and friendly
Positive experience: This building has big windows, so there is plenty of natural light. I go swimming at the Y whenever it's too cold to swim outside
Fantastic experience: I have been training with Matt for quite some time now, and I can confidently say that he is a fantastic gym trainer. His expertise and dedication have been instrumental in helping me achieve my fitness goals. Matt's personalized workout plans are tailored to my needs, pushing me to challenge myself while ensuring I stay motivated throughout the journey. His positive attitude and encouragement have made every session enjoyable and productive. I highly recommend Matt to anyone seeking a professional and effective gym trainer to guide them on their fitness journey. With Matt's guidance, you'll be well on your way to a healthier and stronger version of yourself!
Negative experience: It’s a really nice spot but there isn’t nearly enough availability for the facilities for paying members… they have an awesome basketball court and it’s almost never available, makes it not worth the money
Positive experience: I wanted to get a membership here... but the weight room is small, and the basketball courts are booked up 50% of the time... it's a great facility but your access to it, is limited...
Fantastic experience: Regina is the absolute best.
Negative experience: Ymca nl doesn't meet my family needs. It suppose to be a inclusive organization but doesnt include my son who is special needs, they expect me to pay a full membership fee for him and he can not use all the equipment alone so he can't go by himself. We should get at least a 50% discount for him. My son is not a typical 16 year old therefore there should be a different fee for those who have special needs children and want to attend the y. I ve emailed them several times and got no response.
Fantastic experience: Really liking the modern architecture of the building, treadmills lined off in front of a huge window and awesome view of town
Negative experience: I love this place. The missing three stars are to object to what I feel is societal lunacy over prime-time discrimination against males, especially at YMCA. Sunday 1 -2, you advertise is FEMALE ONLY. You state this is to "include all religions." But will ‘allow” a male that identifies as a woman. Of course, a dishonest man would say they identify as a female. But neither my son nor husband are dishonest. I’m female, Christian incidentally, not that this is relevant, as I would never expect my religion to discriminate against men, nor would I want a religion to discriminate against women. We can't have it both ways, team. Female-only times are an extremely dangerous precedent and contradictory to your openness to society's progression.
Fantastic experience: Best baby pool!
Fantastic experience: Great place for workout
Positive experience: Really nice but expensive memberships
Fantastic experience: Love the basketball court
Fantastic experience: Great fitness centre
Positive experience: Always enjoyed coming to the Y until I was charged 26 dollars for two adults and two kids. The front counter attendant was friendly but struggled getting his message across regarding swimming. Otherwise a nice experience.
Fantastic experience: Great experience
Fantastic experience: Love it would go there for gym
Fantastic experience: Great place. My daughter loves their summer camp and we are having her birthday party there :) Pool is awesome. And staff go out of their way for you
Fantastic experience: I go to aquafit there
Negative experience: Front counter staff was very rude. Fortunately there is a high turnover rate, so I'll just wait until it's new people.
Fantastic experience: Positive: Quality
Fantastic experience: Cleaning facility continuosly and professional Programs and unstructured are recommended.
Negative experience: I have tryed to cancel my membership multiple times for a few months. I did out the cancelation papers but an employee never did the whole process with me. Which they called to let me know but I have not been able to get ahold on them sense and i went there a few times as well. It has been a nightmare trying to get ahold of someone to end my membership.
Fantastic experience: Looking forward to your reopening‼️
Same here. Hopefully it will be soon. :)
