Killarney Aquatic & Recreation Centre: Opinions
Positive experience: The City of Calgary is upgrading. And renovating numerous pools in South Calgary. Killarney should definitely be next on the list.
Fantastic experience: Staffs are always nice and polite ;)
Fantastic experience: Clean, l love it
Positive experience: Good place for swimming near downtown
Negative experience: I took my toddler for swimming lesson. The staffs were friendly and knowledgeable. Plenty of parking. However the water was cold my toddler included other kids was shivering. The changing room was Cold as well. You have to arrive early because they have limited showers (3), you have to line up and wait.
Positive experience: The lifeguards at the Killarney Pool are so great! They are very active, always present and watching. They also always address People with kindness instead of barking orders which I've seen at other pools. I'm always super impressed by them there.
Fantastic experience: Best rec we have right now in calgary. I have been to Glenmore and Acadia also but Killarney is something which is far better than others.
Positive experience: Some staff are friendly. One lifeguard staff interrogated me about my flip-flops and as well there was feces in the womens bathroom stall area spread around the floor so me my mother and my kids were not able to use the washroom there. Won't be going back for swim lessons here. It's a shame because their pools are warmer temperature which is nice.
Negative experience: Im mom of 2 kids teenager and toddler, so the toddler pool is not open most of the time even during scheduled hours, sometimes they are allow it in the big pool all together. But sometimes they say only adults can swim, but what about a small child?(I'm talking about public swim schedules)! And sometimes a child pooped in the hot tube, no one noticed it and no one cleaned it up.Almost every time I visit this place I get upset
Fantastic experience: It is a vibrant facility offering a range of activities and amenities for visitors of all ages. It features a large indoor swimming pool with lanes for lap swimming, a leisure pool with a wave feature, and a hot tub for relaxation. The centre also includes a well-equipped fitness area, a gymnasium, and spaces for group exercise classes. With programs and events for families, children, and fitness enthusiasts, Killarney Aquatic & Recreation Centre is a popular community hub promoting health, wellness, and fun.
Fantastic experience: I am so happy and impressed that this pool has a universal changing room. I have yet to visit another pool that has one and that makes it super difficult for my non-binary partner to enjoy swimming in Calgary, but now we've found this place we're going to be regulars!
Fantastic experience: Nice experience at this pool with my grand daughter today. She had lots of fun on the diving board and with all of the floaters available too. The water was pleasant temperature.
Fantastic experience: Absolutely love this pool and the people I go to the aqua Zumba class it's amazing way better than deep water Aqua size
Positive experience: Nice place
Fantastic experience: Nice pool and hot tub! Very clean
Fantastic experience: Went there just to visit and the place looks really nice, with plenty of activities. Waiting to be able to use the space soon!
Positive experience: It’s beautiful place to enjoy time with family on weekend, even in adverse weather too ..
Positive experience: I go here for affordability but the facility has lots to of room to grow. Hours could be better, gym is small and compact and often quite busy so have to wait for machines, and I can never seem to use the pool in the evenings as classes are always going on. I am an average working person so mainly wish the hours worked better
Positive experience: Standard pool with hot tub, diving board, and steam room. Good for lane swimming and casual fun. Very cheap entrance fees too!
Fantastic experience: Great staff. Good environment. Often gets a bit busy so try late hours.
Negative experience: Me and my daughter went here a couple of days ago and the worker let us use the gym and everything else. We came here again two days later and my daughter was not allowed inside even though she was with me and was allowed inside last time. Rules seem to change day to day. Never stepping foot in that place again.
Positive experience: More public hours needed to cover community’s needs
Negative experience: Not worth the money the gym too small the stuff rude ، pool always busy with teaching classes not worth the money i bring my kid we pay but they say you can’t use swimming pool because of the classes not worth is to pay monthly
Negative experience: It has to be one of the worst gyms in the city. Yet prices go up every year? - Paper towel to wipe down machines - Zero supervision - We have to wait for the front desk to give us the door code every visit. - Old machines with patches on them - Tours are done by themselves, no staff ever goes to the gym to check on anything. - Lot of thief A lot more cons and very few pros.
Positive experience: Good for kids recreational activities
Fantastic experience: Kindest staff, well organized, amazing trainers (very professional), super clean, well equipped! Thank you Calgary!
Fantastic experience: Love swimming here . Much cheaper than the others pool . Especially nice staff & clean pool .
Fantastic experience: A great city pool. Drop in rates are much cheaper than the privately owned pools in the city. My toddler loves the little slide into the water and the toddler pool! Also the larger pool temperature isn’t too cold so she loves starting in that pool.
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff, quiet location ,and good service.
Fantastic experience: my kids love to go there for swimming .
Negative experience: the hand sanitizer by the men's change room has been empty since October. Very concerning, please replace and maintain this basic standard
Fantastic experience: I honestly don't want to be salty and give the whole place a bad review. It's good and all, but they really need to do something about the gym. Sometimes it's way too crowded to handle. add a bench chair
Positive experience: I really appreciate that this pool has a viewing gallery. Super helpful for the kids' weekend swimming lessons and pretty much guarantees seating. I prefer this venue to Westside.
Positive experience: Friendly staff and good exercise gym
Negative experience: Won’t go here again. Not a lot of options for kids to play, my 7 year olds weren’t allowed to swim in a different section than me even with life jackets on, and a super cranky old lady took out her frustration on me and my kids in the change room.
Positive experience: Kids school organized swim lessons take place at Killarney . Good and convenient center
Negative experience: Can’t figure out why they don’t put all the lane ropes in for lane swimming. Is this the guards being lazy?
Fantastic experience: My kid's school offered swimming lessons during PE classes. The center is great opportunity for such events and personal visits as well. The group was introduced to the activity by lifeguard named Mustafa. He was very patient with all questions from the kiddos. Changing rooms were clean, plenty of lockers, lots of lost items left after our visit :) Showers on the way to pools and washrooms. Pretty neat. The kids were divided on groups based on skill level, then 5 lifeguards/trainers started training with lots of patience and care.
Positive experience: Great staff, cold as hell pool I had to think hard a few times to decide how many stars I give this place. For the people, ie the staff and instructors, this places deserves 10 stars out of 5. Super friendly and amazing staff. For the facility, I would give it a 1.5 star only and here's why: 1. The place where people leave their boots and shoes is sorta filthy 2. The main big pool is STUPID COLD. It makes zero sense how this is the one pool that is so cold compared to any other city of Calgary pool. 3. The hot pool, note hot not heated has been out of commission at least 25-30% of the times I've been there. The City should invest in the pool heating because the location is ideal and the only one which is in a inner city neighbourhood.
Positive experience: I would like to see more supervision in the gym area to enforce gym etiquette
Fantastic experience: My regular class swimming pool... Love it
Fantastic experience: Great place to spend free time
Negative experience: I warn people who think that their boots have no value, this is not true, in this room for sure. I left my boots in front of the locker room, and after 1.5 hours they were not there. Someone needed used boots... It’s better to lock your things, even if they don’t have much value for you, someone else might like them)) The workers at the recreation center didn’t really care, even though there was a camera there.
Fantastic experience: Good programs for adults and kids. Nice pools and really clean
Fantastic experience: Great aquatic centre. Nice and clean with ample space and a huge stream room. Good hours of operation as well.
Fantastic experience: Good place for adult fitness classes in the pool. The people here are very friendly. There are many regular users.
Fantastic experience: My mom accidentally locked her lock key inside, thankfully staffs cut open the lock for her in no time ~ thank you!! She could enjoy the favorite hottub without panic i really appreciate all the hard working staffs for community !
Positive experience: Please extend weekend hours. No reason y'all shouldn't be open till 10pm 7 days a week! Thank you!
Fantastic experience: It's a well-kept city swimming pool. Clean and family friendly.
Positive experience: I love this place! Joined this centre for swimming lessons and my instructor Rachel is the sweetest. She is quite helpful and after 5 classes, I think I know the technique but obviously need practice. She also delved into various techniques as per each individual's comfort. I gave 4 stars because the booking process is overwhelming. We got up to be in the online queue for registration at 5.30 AM, yet we were waitlisted to be in the waiting queue. The demand is wayyyy more than the supply. Also, for a class of 8 adults, the pool space allocated was a bit small. 3 lanes aren't enough for 8 adults to practice without running into each other. We were obviously doing it and I guess, at this price, it was fine. As the winter season sets in, the temperature inside seems to be cooling too... I wish it stays a bit warmer inside. Lockers are available at 25 cents per use. Changing rooms are clean.
Fantastic experience: I come here once a week or two for drop in lane swim it’s always pleasant. Staff are nice and the facility/schedule is organized well. The floors in the change rooms could be a bit cleaner though, but overall it’s not bad at all. I enjoy this pool a lot.
Fantastic experience: Had the 6am Monday morning deep tank aquasize class this morning. That was the best class I have ever had in all the years I have been taking them. Jane was extra fantastic as our class instructor. Infectious energy, friendly, knowledgeable and really connected with the class
Fantastic experience: Clean, much more organized compared to other city pools.
Fantastic experience: Sunday family swim is the best time! Plus a playroom to use before and after.
Fantastic experience: Love coming here to swim some laps! People are helpful if you have questions. Lots of regulars. Drop in lane swims get very busy so come early!
Fantastic experience: I use the gym here, it's sufficient... Costs $55/month
Positive experience: Good place but some times dirty
Fantastic experience: This is a very nice facility, the weight room is equipped well for training. The building is clean and tidy and maintained well.
Fantastic experience: Clean and well run city facility.
Positive experience: My only thing is I wish there was more family swimming time
Fantastic experience: If you are looking for group fitness classes I highly recommend this centre. Madeleine is an amazing fitness instructor I have ever had. She is very knowledgeable and knows how to keep people motivated. I highly recommend her classes for anyone looking to get a great workout routine! It’s been 2 years that I have been going to the drop in classes regularly.
Fantastic experience: Wish I had asked the name of the lifeguard that helped us today. My 6 yr old bumped his mouth on the slide and the lifeguard was so calm cool and professional, she was also very empathetic and immediately got my kiddo some ice and watched him for a minute while I rounded up my oldest. She really calmed this anxious mama down and it was the good part of a bad day ! Outstanding staff at Killarney pool !
Fantastic experience: Great neighbourhood swimming spot. All my kids learned how to swim here and I'm becoming a better swimmer myself every time we come every week. The hot tub is closed on Sundays during the public swim time but the steam room is open.
Positive experience: Nice facility for a relaxing swim. An oldish facility but all that you need is there.
Fantastic experience: Very friendly Leona us here for balance and weights land exercise. I love her.
Positive experience: Great pool. Super busy! They are very well organized though.
Fantastic experience: Very nice people A cool dip on a hot day always has good reviews but.. The people who swim there don't like native people we got many uncomfortable looks To many tattoos maybe lol idk don't matter. This does not reflect on the building or staff my grandkids had fun
Positive experience: Great pool for young kids learning to swim. Find the City of Calgary swim instructors at this site to do a great job teaching kids how to swim.
Fantastic experience: Outstanding facility, tons of amenities, friendly staff.
Positive experience: Pool temps are nice. 28 deg for the large pool and dive tank, 32 deg for the kiddy pool and 40 for the hot tub. Nice steam room as well. We went to the family change room but were disappointed. Lots of lockers but only two change rooms. Long wait times.
Positive experience: Great Center, wide selection of classes. The pool could get crowded. They have monthly passes you just need to visit the Center to buy them. They only have the daily passes and 10 days online
Fantastic experience: the pool was really nice to go and have a swim and the gym was very clean as well
Fantastic experience: Exceptional swimming lessons instructors! So well trained to work with kids of all abilities and ages. I noticed patience, kindness, cultural and neurodivergent sensitivity and awareness as well as, of course, great teaching skills and awesome swimming. We drive out of out Neighbourhood for swimming lessons here because the instructors and customer service staff are top notch!
Negative experience: They have very little weekend or evening aqua programming. Before Covid there was evening and weekend aqua fit. Now there are 7 daytime sessions and no evening or weekend sessions. I have requested having evening and weekend sessions many times to no avail. They seem to cater to retired or unemployed people. I pay city taxes and would like to be able to see programming that I can use.
Fantastic experience: Great public swimming pool. Lots of parking, and easy to find.
Negative experience: First time i went there. I met a very unhelpful person, but then I asked a woman to explain some things to me, and she did a great job
Positive experience: Great city pool. Pools is basic, great for lane swimming no bells and whistles. It can be chilly in the change rooms as it is all open and creates a breeze throughout.
Fantastic experience: One of my favorite rec centres to attend, has all the amenities, hot tub, sauna/steamroom, pool etc...
Fantastic experience: Fun. Sauna room hot tub...
Positive experience: The amenities are okay for what you pay. My biggest concern is how drafty the women's change room gets during the winter and how infrequently it seems to be cleaned. The floor is always wet and hairy. Definitely bring pool sandals. The gym is small and during peak hours you have to wait for equipment a lot. Overall it's decent, cleanliness can definitely improve though.
Positive experience: Large fitness area. And large change rooms. Universal change room has only 2 showers. Nice staff. Older style decor.
Positive experience: Kind a small, not my favorite but staff is nice.
Positive experience: The gym is a bit small. Sometimes during peak hours most of the weight machines/benches/squat racks are occupied. Not a lot of room for stretching.
Fantastic experience: Line this pool. The dive tank is fantastic. Children's pool is separate. Hot tub is huge and the swimming pool is great as well.
Positive experience: Overall nice place; I had been here for swimming and hence all my review are related to that; I have not explored other facilities by them. So for swimming - 1. Pay and swim - prices are in one my picture which has all rates 2. Then comes locker - You need to lock your belongings either with 25 or 50 cent locker (you make sure of carrying coin) or the lock for lock with your own lock and key 3. You are expected to take a bath with soap before and after swim 4. Life jackets; swim board; Etc all are free inside for pool 5. There are four pools they have ; A. Main swimming pool (normal or cold water when I visited) B. Hot water ; smaller in size ; but good to start with C. Dive pool D. Kids pool with all play items 6. I went in public swim time so it has 1hr30min time to swim on Sat (12:30 to 2:00); on Sunday 9:30 to 11:30. 7. There are lot of lifeguards around to watch for safety 8. Check out new photos for the latest schedule (14 Jan 2023 visit).
Negative experience: Unprofessional and unreasonable stuff. Don't know which one is the reason but this place is getting worse. This place doesn't have a phone to contact them before you go there and find out that you can't attend the pool for different reasons.. Unbelievable in 2022 the phone is a luxury thing for that place!! So disappointed.
Negative experience: This used to be a nice place but recently the service and pool facilities are not meeting our expectation any more. You can not call them for pool updates because luck of a phone number, and people with special needs are not receving the deserved service and attention. So dissapointing.
Fantastic experience: Staff are great and the hot tub is comfortable! Dive tank is a good temperature
Positive experience: Perfect staff, Lukas, Syndie, K-Shaf, all wonderful, welcoming and easy to talk to, very clean and well maintained pool and gym, love that the pool and gym are accessible with one subscription.
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff. Good place for kids!!
Positive experience: Great place to work outbut needs more drop in classes in the evening for example 5 or 6 pm.
Fantastic experience: Homely and in a quiet neighborhood.
Fantastic experience: Good facility. Clean. Not often too busy. Sufficient amount of weights for size. Steam room finally functional after aprox 2 yrs in-op!
Fantastic experience: The hours should be earlier and very limited hours for the pool
Fantastic experience: Fun place for all friends and family!
Fantastic experience: The place is very good. The employees are very polite, the place is very clean and organized. I recommend!
Positive experience: Enjoy summer at this center, it also has great staff
Fantastic experience: Took the kid, she had a blast. They have 4 pools: lane, diving, toddler, hot tub
Negative experience: I live close so I went there to rehab out of stroke injuries. During the pandemic mandates for shots and masks, the Flu Trux Klan supporters all refused to show up. So its been nice. Considerate people with a sense of social responsibility stayed and we worked out safely. Lower the mandated requirements keeping us safe and we now have the return of ultra-conservative narcissist weight pumpers, buying and selling steroids(?), juicers, in the parking lot, seeking victims to dominate with gaslighting and intimidation. I’ve had 4 experiences, in a week, one with staff, who felt they could criticize me and my handicapped performance using the equipment with impunity. The staff guy was bothersome demanding to know why I asked him to fix the disassembled equipment I wished to use, he was programming tv, he was getting closer and closer intimidatingly until finally I mentioned that his breath was really unpleasant. He left and shot me hate looks from then on. Norm, was all hail well met when he returned to the gym recently, we had met previously at the gym, I said I had tried to say hello to him in community at the grocery but he just ignored me, so what was with the demanding that I stop exercising, allow him to get too close and touch me? He said that never happened. I don’t like gaslighters. It’s best to cut them off. I let him know that his advances were unwelcome to not talk to me in future. He got really upset and tried to regain control by saying (yelling) I had issues. I moved to my alternate rec centre much further away but the staff is nice. I told them I tried Killarney again but it’s gone back to being bad. At Killarney I have to drag staff away from a screen to even get a hello. The staff at my alternate are responsive. First of all they actually spoke to me, and secondly they listened, and thirdly they asked if there was anything I needed. This is the way it should be.
Fantastic experience: The gym has everything I need and the pool is great
