Chaplin Family YMCA: Opinions
Negative experience: I registered ymca for the last 1.5 year but I didn't get any job assistance from them even I have my job experience but these guys didn't help me to find any single job. Highly not recommended
Negative experience: My daughter is 5 years old and she’s asked many times to go swimming even though it’s cold out so I figured I would be able to take her to the ymca to go swimming but absolutely every single time I call to know when they do swims or to even get any information they never answer the phones at all but then when you go there they are all just simply standing around the phone refusing to answer Seems very unprofessional and I think it’s insane to have a phone number for a place that doesn’t answer their phones at all. I just wanted to take my daughter to go swimming that’s literally it.
Negative experience: I had a very disappointing experience. I registered with an agent named Afsheen Noreen, but unfortunately, she was not helpful at all and did not assist in finding any job opportunities. The service overall was unhelpful and did not meet my expectations. I would not recommend it to others seeking employment assistance.
We are very sorry about your experience with our Employment Service team. I suggest reaching out to Barinder Rai at [email protected]. Our team wants to provide the best service to our community, and if you feel that didn't happen, Barinder can assist. Thanks!
Negative experience: Their family changing rooms for swimming have no rules, people leave their bags in ghe changing rooms for 30 mins untill their kids are done with swimming, block it for innocent people, make a suffering for needy people, even if you tell front office, they do not take actions on people who have blocked, they do not suspend their memberships, they have noone in the changing rooms to inspect even, they should hire more people to ensure this thing does not happen and proper suspension should be done to those parents who block and make life difficult for others. Worst management
Positive experience: It's not the YMCAs fault for this low rating. But to any queer people who might come here, maybe wear headphones. When in the locker room you're going to hear negative things about trans people and other pig headed comments from older men who think we are in the states. Talking about Trump and other outdated ideology. Just left today with hearing two older men talk about the negatives of kamala Harris, the good points Trump has and how "I'll never agree to men to women." Whatever that means. It makes me want to cancel my membership but again, the staff are wonderful, the place is clean and it's close to home. Just wanted to through that out there for LGBT+ that might want to soak in peace.
Hi Joshua, Thank you so much for sharing your experience. We value inclusivity and are committed to fostering a safe, respectful environment for everyone who uses our facilities. We're sorry to hear about the behavior you've encountered in the locker room. Although the views expressed by other members don't reflect our YMCA's values, we take concerns like yours very seriously. We will use your feedback to inform our ongoing efforts to cultivate a more welcoming and supportive space for all. Please know that you can always speak with one of our staff members, who will be happy to address any concerns that may make our members uncomfortable. If there's anything further you'd like to discuss, or if you'd like to connect directly about this experience, please don't hesitate to reach out to [email protected]. Your comfort and sense of belonging are important to us, and we want all members of the LGBTQ+ community to feel at ease and respected here. Thank you again for letting us know and for your kind words about our staff and facilities—we're grateful to have you as part of our Y community.
Fantastic experience: Good experience for my toddler
Positive experience: In the past few weeks, I've had two unpleasant experiences at the swimming change rooms, and I feel the need to share them. Incident 1 (Three Weeks Ago): Someone took my bag from the locker room, and upon finding it, I discovered that my kids' clothes had been scattered in three different places: some were thrown in the garbage, some in the recycling bin, and the rest of the bag was tossed in the corner of the room. It was upsetting and unnecessary. Incident 2 (Today): After swimming, I noticed that my daughter's purple jacket (which we had recently bought from Costco) and her winter hat were missing from the locker. Essentially, they've been stolen. I reported the incident to the management again, and they promised to apologize, but I think we need more than just an apology. To the management: We don’t need apologies—we need better security and more staff, especially on weekends when the facility is busier. It’s shocking that people would even steal children’s clothing.
Hello, Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We’re truly sorry to hear about these experiences - they sound very frustrating. We want all our members to feel safe and valued at our facility. Your feedback is really helpful, and we are actively reviewing our security measures and considering options to increase staff presence during our busiest times. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us directly at [email protected] if you’d like to discuss this further.
Positive experience: Everything I go there's a bandaid in the pool but great services and it offers many programs for youth and elderly alike.
Fantastic experience: Nice drive
Fantastic experience: Great place with good aminities well maintained
Fantastic experience: My family love this place. Staff is very friendly abd helpful
Fantastic experience: Very spacious and doesn't feel cramped at all Swimming pool is as big as Markham's if not bigger. Court is not wood but the material is very sticky in a good way. You won't slide at all. Studios are big. Been to Markham and Oshawa Y First time and I've never seen this ladder machine before.
Fantastic experience: Swimming experience in the slow lane is a good opportunity for the new learners.
Fantastic experience: Good gym. Playcare team is amazing with our child.
Fantastic experience: Good
Fantastic experience: This location is a nice facility, modern and clean. The staff is friendly as well.
Thank you for the kind words Paul! Have a wonderful day.
Fantastic experience: I always love this place. It offers several type of services like gym and pool services.
Fantastic experience: Members plus is decent, sauna, steam, and whirlpool all work well. Only downside is side is you only get 2 towels, and filtered drinking fountains are scarce, other than that the facility/amenities are great.
Negative experience: Prices have gone up, services have gone down
Fantastic experience: All of the Aquatic Instructors are absolutely fantastic! Both Anne and Monica, as well as, Jane dedicate themselves to providing the best possible water classes helping us to improve our skills and strengths to achieve our goals in the pool. At the same time making the classes inspirational and the most fun! Thank you to the instructors and the lifeguards for such professional level water classes! M ♀️
Thank you for the kind words Margaret, we've passed them along to our team!
Fantastic experience: Equipment is always in good condition. Lots of workout equipment and space. Often lots of people, but rarely have to wait for equipment. Could be open longer. Friendly staff.
Fantastic experience: Following an unfortunate incident, the staff at the Chaplin YMCA went above and beyond my expectations investigating the incident. I couldn't be more thankful to them for making me feel like a valued member. The whole front desk team are amazing, but I'd like to thank Alexander in particular for the outstanding client service.
Thank you for the kind words Desi, we appreciate having you as part of our Y community!
Fantastic experience: Great fitness center with men's, women's, and family change rooms. They have free weights, universal(all-in-one) weight machines, treadmills and more! There's also a pool, and more, that I didn't have time to check out
Thank you Kyle, we're glad to hear you enjoyed your visit and hope to see you again soon!
Fantastic experience: I love the family-friendly positive atmosphere.
Negative experience: It is very very expensive for gym. Other community service options are also there that I have not tried. They say they are not for profit, but why charge so much fees for gym ? Compare it to fit for less. They do have few more options but not sure why they are 6 time more expensive Also, they are closed every stat holidays, where other gyms are open
Fantastic experience: Best place to pass your time, play games and keep yourself active.
Fantastic experience: My children go swimming and the trainers are very cute and helpful .we like them .
Positive experience: As a fitness center it is more expensive than most. They are a little disorganized and not as shiny as other places. But the front desk staff make up for all of that. The people who work there are usually friendly warm and inviting. And are the main reason my family and I continue to go there.
Fantastic experience: Friendly, clean, well maintained
Fantastic experience: I love swim here. My family enjoy it. We did many things here as well
Fantastic experience: Great place for kids especially in winters
Fantastic experience: I went as a kid, now my child goes here for swimming lessons
Fantastic experience: Love the restorative yoga class!
Fantastic experience: I always love the YMCA. I took classes here as a child. Clean, well kept and polite people
Fantastic experience: Excellent staff and very clean facility
Negative experience: I suspect this will be deleted. I used to feel included and happy at the YMCA. Now they coldly dismiss any concerns about their policy to allow a man in the woman's changerooms. Women don't matter to them, only men. Interesting this is a Christian organization. Maybe change the name to something else, there is nothing Christian about subjecting women and children to men in our women's only spaces and participating and enabling the erosion of women's rights. Elder abuse is also applicable here and should be considered. No woman, whatever the age, deserves to have this happen and the elderly and children are especially vulnerable, as well as survivors of sexual assault. How can the management think it's okay to do this to women? Give your head a shake. This is wrong and I think on some level you must understand that.
Fantastic experience: clean facility, friendly staff.
Positive experience: Clean facilities. Offers registered and drop in programs. Swimming lesson registration is ridiculous though. They need a better system.
Fantastic experience: Typically visit about 6 times a week when I am in town. Friendly and helpful staff, clean facilities.
Fantastic experience: I am absolutely in love with the YMCA and everything they offer. Their generous provision of a 3-month free membership for new immigrants is a game-changer, allowing everyone to stay fit without worrying about financial constraints. The staff members are not only friendly but incredibly kind, making every visit a heartwarming experience. Their dedication to maintaining top-notch equipment and swimming facilities is evident, and I couldn't be more impressed. If I could give them more stars, I would gladly do so for their exceptional service and support to the community
Hello Sowntharya, thank you for sharing these kind words. We're glad to hear you are enjoying being part of your Y community, and hope to see you again soon!
Positive experience: Am disappointed that there is not more family or public swimming on the weekends
Negative experience: They never answer their phone
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff and neat environment.
Fantastic experience: Favourite and ever green, feels healthy environment Front desk services are remarkable and helping
Fantastic experience: The staff that work here from the front desk, registration, immigration and employment services have been very professional and kind. They really want to help and that they did for my case.
Negative experience: Your website is a mess, there is no classes that can be booked when registration opens. No one answers the phones, so I am not seeing any benefits in the membership for my kid, as no classes can be booked/accessed. Staff is useless as well, as they don't help or most of the time don't know any answers to simple questions! Response to below: Some delays happen from semester to semester, why not to fix it? Oh, I know why, people are still paying $40+ per kid membership in hope to register for a program, and they never do and they still pay for air!
Hi Ganna! Our registration system is receiving a lot of traffic currently. Registration has just opened and there are thousands of users accessing the system at the same time, causing some delays. We appreciate your patience and encourage you to reload the page until you are able to get access. Thank you.
Positive experience: Great place very affordable...would be nice to see if they could fix the general sauna and either fix or remove the slide in the pool. That's the only reason this isn't a 5 star. But that's honestly nitpicking. All the staff I've met so far, seem genuinely dedicated to doing a fantastic job. And they all seem to know what they're talking about too!
Fantastic experience: Nice pool and decent gym.
Positive experience: This gym has a few positives about it; however, it is also a stark reminder that the magic of the YMCA is gone due to the amalgamation and the choices of upper level management. Pros: We have had great experiences with the lifeguards in the Bronze levels (lifeguard levels). They have gone out of their way to be supportive of my teens in swimming. Also, the cleaning staff always shine the brightest at the Y. They are friendly, and they do an amazing job. Lena (at the front desk) has gone out of her way to be helpful! I love exercising here while my kids are swimming! However, at this location, they only have room for my teens who are or have been in the Bronze levels. My youngest swimmer has never been able to get into her home YMCA since the amalgamation. They also have a lot of gym equipment. Cons: The magic of the YMCA is gone. We have been members for about a decade. Before the amalgamation, the YMCA offered so many programs to younger kids. They had dance, Taekwondo, a Tumblers program (tiny kids), and Youth Fit (ages 10-14). It was wonderful because I could work out while all my kids were in programs. Now, that is all gone. I have seen many teens chased out of the weight rooms because this location has an age minimum of 15 years for the weight room and 13 for the cardio area. It is sad because the teens are trying to do a healthy activity, and the Y doesn't care about providing an alternative for these teens like bringing back Youth Fit. My teens all took that program (training on gym equipment every week) and loved it. None of my teens or tween have been interested in the few programs they offer for teens now. They do enjoy the weight room though! I fill out all of the surveys that the Y sends out and nothing changes. They used to have a comment box at this location, and they would actually make changes based on your comments. Also the staff used to be multi-skilled. They used to be able to teach a dance program for kids and do various things around the Y. Now, that isn't the case. The hours at the YMCA are also very bad compared to other gyms. Knowing that the Y offers such poor hours compared to Crunch (24 hr cheap gym) is frustrating. They close on Fridays at 8 (which is especially hard), but it's still annoying that they close at 9 on the other weekdays. All of the multi-skilled staff left during the amalgamation. I'm starting to see some of the staff being moved between locations too. Our membership costs have increased dramatically. Swimming: The waterslide in the pool area has not worked for many years. My teens have appreciated the lane swim availability. However, the app for picking the lane swims is very poor. It shuts down availability for the lane swims as soon as the time begins, even if no one has selected a time, so it is annoying if you want to book last minute. Another issue is that they never have swimming spots for my younger child at this location, so she has to go to the Guelph YMCA, which was never the case before the amalgamation. So, we never get updates about when swimming is on a break because my child's home location is the Cambridge Y not the Guelph Y, but the Cambridge one never has swimming availability, so we end up always picking the Guelph Y. Before the amalgamation, all of my kids could get everything done at the Cambridge YMCA. After the amalgamation, it has caused us to have to move between the locations. The YMCA touts the great privileges of being able to move between YMCA locations, but what they don't explain to you is that you have to do this, in order to get the programs that they offer; whereas before, you could get it all done at your home YMCA. Music: One big positive is they don't play the music very loud here. It is usually pop-style music. Food: They have a cafe inside with some limited hours. See my pics. There is seating there facing the pool so you can watch your kids swim. Wheelchair accessible: The whole building is wheelchair-accessible. I've also seen some people in wheelchairs using the machines in the building.
Positive experience: Great place. Been going since I was a child. Not everything is new, but the place is kept clean and welcoming.
Fantastic experience: My family and I enjoy going here.
Fantastic experience: I went swimming, met the coolest lifegaurd named Avery she was very nice about enfourcing the pool rules and making sure everyone had a good time. *P.s music is a vibe
Negative experience: While it's a great place for adults, there are practically nothing available for the kids! They have very limited number of sessions for swimming and it's almost impossible to get a spot! Only one session for soccer and basketball I believe which is always full because they never start a new session with new registrations for anytime (swimming/soccer/basketball).....the only way to get a spot is if someone leaves. And whenever we ask, they say that the new registrations will happen in September if we get more instructors! It's unfortunate.....we have three kids and we are paying for all three of them since the beginning of the year but they are not getting any opportunity to register Every where else where we have ever enrolled our kids it's always 3/4 months of classes and then new registrations happen on first come first basis.....this way everyone gets a chance.....not like a never ending classes schedule where they only way to get in is if someone decides to leave or is absent continuously for 4 weeks. Plus, they don't hold spots because of this either, even if you are paying.....so you can't go for vacation or take time off, otherwise your spot will be gone even though you are still paying!
Negative experience: Bad experience with their swimming lessoms. My daughter has been swimming at Level 4 swimmer at City of Cambridge Aquatics program. We enrolled her into YMCA swimming lessons considering it will be better however their inexperienced swim instructors keep assessing her level ncorrectly in the first 3 weeks and wasted time. After 3 lessons and no advancement, when I argued with the Lead instructor Makyla and about to pull my daughter out, she was subjected to a rigorous assessment by Makyla for almost 30 minutes who later confirmed that my daughter is indeed an advanced swimmer and confirmed to move her to Swimmer batch. Prior to that assessment, Makyla keep arguing that her initial assessment was correct and that my daughter is a beginner. We just proved her wrong after the assessment. The whole experience was pathetic. We later sent an email to the center to cancel our membership, explaining the bad experience with Makyla and team but they did not even respond within 48 hrs.. Update: YMCA team responded later, apologised, and canceled the membership as per our request.
Fantastic experience: It's been a few years but I remember when this place opened up and how much fun the kids and I had. They have a waterside which they loved the most. The location is perfect and there was always lots of parking.
Negative experience: Please don't go If you are not family person Swimming pool is never available
Fantastic experience: We bring our son every week for swimming lessons and also come to swin all together as a family. Great stuff and place to visit
Fantastic experience: Five stars!! The ymca Chaplin is the most open and accepting place I’ve ever had the pleasure of attending. After trying many other gyms, this is the only one I’ve felt comfortable and even excited to go back to every day. The staff plays a huge role in this. I would like to shout out one staff member in particular, Lune. Lune always has a smile on his face, and greets all the members with a positive attitude. His conversation is always something to look forward to, and he’s outed himself as being an amazing inspiration. Volunteering at the cat shelter, going on charity walks (such as coldest night), and aspiring to be a personal trainer to help make other trans folks feel more comfortable with working out are just a few of the amazing things this man does. Lune has been through so much as a person, and has earned the title of role model for me. 10/10 I recommend the Chaplin ymca to anyone who will listen! #TransRights
Fantastic experience: I totally love the Cambridge YMCA! It's always clean, they have very friendly staff, excellent facilities and a wide variety of programs. If I could, I'd go every day!
Negative experience: been trying to call these guys all week, at least 2-3x / day and it keeps going straight to vm. tried both numbers (519 and 833), no rings, nothing, straight to voicemail! it seems that someone monitors these reviews, so i'm hoping they see this and rectify the issue (i will delete this once i'm able to get a hold of someone at the centre)
Hello Faisal! We have been experiencing technical difficulties with our phone lines. If you send an email to [email protected] with your inquiry and contact information someone from our team will reach out to you. Thank you for your understanding.
Fantastic experience: Great Gym my Wife is Disabled and she wanted a nice friendly Atmosphere were she could start to work on her mobility and strength. This is diffinanly the place to go Jeremy is an awesome instructor very patient and caring to each clients abilities very impressed with the interaction that we receive from the staff . If anyone is afraid of going to the gym because of thier physical condition don't be if you are able to get to the YMCA the staff will do thier best to make it a very pleasant inviting environment for you .
Thank you Corey! We'll pass your kind words along to Jeremy and the rest of the team.
Fantastic experience: Great gym, love the plus change rooms with sauna, steam room and whirlpool. The weight section is outfitted well and generally busy but not over crowded and the group classes are run by great trainers. Ymca's are always the best place for both community and health/wellness.
Thank you Josh, we're glad to hear you're enjoying being a part of your Y community!
Fantastic experience: The Cambridge YMCA staff absolutely exceeded my expectations! There was a miscommunication about the pool times & Greg went out of his way to ensure we still had a great time, all the other staff were also very welcoming & attentive, so the emergency alarm went off while we were at the desk and the staff communicated to eachother so effortlessly & literally RAN to go save the day, it ended up being a false alarm but if it were me injured & calling for help I would want the staff to react like that, I was absolutely impressed with the staff @ the Cambridge ymca. I will be getting a membership with ymca after today a big factor in this was the staff so kodoos! 5 stars ! Also the gym has a pool steam room, hot tub & dry saunas, the gym, studios and courts with pretty good membership prices. :)
Thank you for the kind words Laura. We're so glad to hear you had a great time during your visit, and we're looking forward to having you join the Y community!
Positive experience: Very clean and friendly staff. Snack bar is nice too- reasonably priced
Fantastic experience: 3 months free gym access for newcomers
Fantastic experience: Excellent facility and Staff are absolutely wonderful.
Fantastic experience: Great place to get in shape !! So many activities to choose from
Negative experience: Didn't realize that you had to book appointments to go swimming. Didn't realize it was only 16 people in the pool and it was maxed. Open swim on a Saturday. None of the staff seem friendly it's all either
Negative experience: This gym used to be opened until 11 pm. I don’t know what’s wrong with them now. I think they’re just trying to make this organization more money by cutting down hours and increasing membership fees. They really need to look at the hours seriously.
Positive experience: A bit pricey compared to some of the newer gyms and maybe a bit dated but I still love it here overall....
Positive experience: Well maintained gym area and pools. the staff is friendly too. It would be much better if it was open earlier and also stayed open past 9.
Fantastic experience: Nice and clean facility friendly staff
Fantastic experience: you can find here GYM and also employment solution
Fantastic experience: Nice people everything was clean and safety swimming ♂️
Fantastic experience: Money well spent if you have a family with kids. We have our kids in swimming and a lot of activities to keep them busy and active. The facilities are very clean and the staff is very helpful.
Positive experience: Great service. Excellent place for the family exercise with classes for the kids and adults (with extra fees in some cases but swimming is included).
Fantastic experience: The Camp is great for kids and the staff is respectful and kind
Fantastic experience: Want to get in shape and stay in shape.. or just need a leisure place to spend time with a friend and being active.. also a wonderful family place something fun for everyone in your family.. fun ways to exercise through classes with qualified instructors so you can be safe .. come try something.. check out a gym membership that fits your lifestyle

Fantastic experience: Very clean place, pools, very good maintenance, friendly staff and atmosphere.
Fantastic experience: Very good place with ample amenities.
Negative experience: Extremely unorganized, my kids have been waiting almost 6 months to get into swimming lessons
Fantastic experience: Our favourite place to swim.
Fantastic experience: Was in town for the long weekend to visit family. It's been 15 years since I've last come here. Gym equipment has greatly improved and the indoor track is great. Would make this my home gym if I lived in the area.
Fantastic experience: Great place to work out!! Will never go back to a regular gym after all the great amenities of the Y!
Fantastic experience: Very good place to start when you are a newcomer in the area
Fantastic experience: My kids go for swimming classes and they love it. They have great kids program at this one. Definitely recommend it to anyone

Fantastic experience: The staff are so very friendly and helpful. Nice place to be. I am 70 years old and it's the best place to stay fit for all of us.
Positive experience: Nice location but smaller workout area and have less number of machines
Fantastic experience: Great staff, great facilities kept in superb condition. Would like to see it open until 300pm on Sundays.
Fantastic experience: Well organized. Curtious staff. Having almost all facilities
Fantastic experience: Excellent facility. Limited by time but very well managed.
Fantastic experience: Plus rooms are amazing. Very clean. Pool is perfect for lane swimming.
Positive experience: Updated: I have seen other reviews mentioning this as well. Why are there no gym programs for kids? I have a 12.5 year old son who is very responsible. His older brothers have gym memberships elsewhere (the decided they couldn't afford Y rates and I don't blame them. Also the hours elsewhere are better) and he wants to be able to use the weights and cardio equipment. There used to be programs for this... Gone. Youth Squash is great... But the limited spaces fill up very fast and the timing is inconvenient (6pm and later would work but all that was open this time was 5pm which we cannot make it to due to working I til 5). I have osteoporosis, diagnosed very young. I need a gym for the winter months when sidewalks are icy. The Y has been my gym of choice in the past but the pricing is out of our budget range. I just got an email about prices going up so you can pay employees a living wage. It would be nice to see an increase in services to go with the price jump. My kiddo would love to do something on top of swimming but isn't into soccer of basketball. What happened to things like family badminton? I really feel like the Y needs to offer reduced rates for those with medical issues. The current process to apply for a membership at a reduced rate doesn't take into account everything going on or all of the expenses in the life of a disabled person. **** We have had a membership of some sort since 2004. Our kids have all done swimming lessons here and the adults in the family have all used membership here for fitness purposes. As the years have passed the programs we could take advantage of have dwindled and the price of membership increased. As such we are down to having one of three children and no adults with membership now. We used to participate in weeknight and weekend member only swim times, kids did cooking classes, ball hockey, streetproofing, drop in care while adults did lane swim, open swim and used the fitness facilities. As a family we also used open gym times, tumbling mats, badminton etc. We miss the way the Y used to be, where members had private swim times, the way there were lots of programs for the kids to participate in every day and all weekend. Now the Y seems busy catering to all their camps and their members are hardly given a thought it seems. We were also very disappointed to have our son's membership "resume" during one of the lockdown lifts, so we paid for about six weeks of a membership he couldn't use. Hopefully swimming lessons resume this fall, however as soon as our youngest completes all of his lessons I imagine none of us will have Y memberships at all. While we will miss thrbY, and have many fond memories of times spent there, the cost/value comparison doesn't come out close to even. While I have always appreciated the safe environment of the Y they have priced themselves out of our range for sure. We have held many kids birthday parties here and those are awesome. I recommend them to everyone.
Positive experience: Helpful and informative peeps. Cant wait for swim lesson program to open up.
Fantastic experience: The quality of service at Cambridge YMCA has improved drastically over the past year. The staff is incredible. Matt is an awesome guy. I really enjoy going there.
