Balsillie Family YMCA: Opinions
Fantastic experience: That was a really cool place for a kid's party. They had a climbing room and heated pool etc. The room they rented was really cold though would have been nice to turn off the ac. Would definitely recommend the rooms for birthday parties.
Fantastic experience: We recently discovered this community centre and we love it. It’s clean and well run and super affordable! For only $5 your child can swim and use the treehouse indoor playground. Staff are very friendly, polite and helpful. There’s also a small cafe inside the complex where they sell smoothies and delectable homemade snacks. I highly recommended this YMCA for families.
Negative experience: Day pass is 10.75 pretty expensive. Been here many times had a membership for years almost didn’t let me in because forgot ID ONCE. ask for a card for the change room said just this 1 time…. Said day passes go to the universal change room with woman and children. That’s strange, super weird. Some random dude off the street getting sent to the change room with woman and children.
Positive experience: Inconsistent childcare hours (offered while you workout) I would call in advance, they would say for example "yes we are open for the child care on Friday from 9-12". I arranged to get there and everything it takes to pack up a newborn and gym gear and everything. And they would suddenly not have the childcare open. On multiple occasions. Last minute.
Fantastic experience: Very good and there is help for people in need
Negative experience: This facility is not great and I wouldn’t recommend to anyone I know. Anytime you call to speak with someone you get an answering machine never a live person, they take forever to return a phone call. Also their swimming program for toddlers is less than satisfactory and to be honest a Little concerning. I had my daughter enrolled in the splasher bubblers where they can go in by themselves without a parent. Very scary that my daughter almost downed because the teenage lifeguard they hired to run the class was not watching her and attending to other children in the pool. My daughter along with the other young children would be taken into the deep end with no lifejackets of floater belts on. I would highly recommend going somewhere else for swimming lessons. Safety here doesn’t seem to be the main concern, I won’t be taking my daughter back to this YMCA.
Fantastic experience: I love the pool except for when there is foulings and it has to be shut down. The staff is amazing and most of the patrons are fun, some of the older people using the Y are a bit crusty LoL
Fantastic experience: The Ladies who work there are Amazing
Negative experience: Horrible money hungry place rude senior trainer you can get a better rate anywhere else and you don't have to prove you're on some kind of assistance
Negative experience: Walked in this morning like every Saturday morning and I'm never questioned. Today was different one, I think the receptionist was having a bad day and wanted to push authority. My kids swiped in and she told them they had to have their picture taken and I told her we couldn't at that time because we are running late with there swimming lessons, she then told us we all had to sign in and I asked why do we need to sign in 2 times? She then told me only one needs to sign in for the kids so I told her I don't need to sign in, my wife will. She then called for a supervisor and she lied to him and told him that she said for me to leave the building! He was kind and unaware but he only listened to the one sided story that the older lady was elaborating. Before I left I told the lady that I'll go wait in my car but if this is all the authority she can use then she is a very peddy person. 30min later my wife was worried because my daughter is insulin dependent and her sugar was 2.4. I had to call in and ask them to give my daughter assistance because I was not allowed to be in the building for my child. This is not the proper way a family program should be run with people at the front door not letting family come in together! I've worked in customer service for 29yrs and when I see poor service like this, I like to point it out. This lady needs to stop giving people a hard time if she is having a bad day because we are the people who give her a paycheck. I will go elsewhere when these lessons are up, I paid enough for the membership, I should have been allowed to watch my children. When our membership is up for renewal in which we have had for 4yrs come this June, I will NOT be renewing, We will look elsewhere.
Negative experience: This used to be my family's favourite place in the city, but it never recovered from covid and re-established it's love and support for families. Before covid, membership cost the same as it does now (for our family at least), but also included children's registered programming. This included swimming lessons, as well as a land program like gymnastics, dance, sports, yoga etc. Now these are additional, as well as incredibly minimal in choice and capacity. This new model is not across the board, as my family recently lived in London ON, that for the same price still includes swimming lessons and TWO land programs with a large selection of options. Another key difference between these YMCA establishments, is their gym room policy. In London, my children are able to exercise with me at 10 yrs old, and was a healthy and relationship building activity we loved to share. At the Peterborough Y location, this age is 14. What I find even worse, is if you have the money, they let you bypass this rule. They have created a $100 class your child can take to allow them access to part of the facility you already pay for with membership. Demanding additional payment for use of something that should be covered, especially from families that are already greatly affected by the current economic situation, when other YMCAs do not have this policy, seems like embezzlement. An age policy is also in effect with class programs like yoga. A medical professional has specifically asked that my 11yr old practice yoga. In London, she and I attended at the Y multiple times a week, but here, there is a 12 yr old minimum age requirement. These craters in what used to be an incredible family resource is going directly against their mission statement of: " ...all ages, backgrounds and walks of life the opportunity to reach their full potential." When they are directly working against our young community members and those with financial constraints. Finally, when I made a post on Instagram raising these concerns, they cancelled my family's membership within 24hrs without notice. A company focused on community would work with it's community's needs, not silence them.
Fantastic experience: Like the gym but have not used the pool yet. Only started here about 2 weeks ago, so will add more in time
Negative experience: We picked the Y because it was one of the only facilities in town that had a hot tub. Shortly after we joined, the hot tub went out of service and has never been back. Asking for updates at the front desk, staff have no idea what is going on or when it is being repaired.
Positive experience: Very helpful welcoming staff
Fantastic experience: Very clean facilities, friendly, courteous staff. My grandchildren had a blast
Positive experience: Agreed. Great instructors. However, whoever is in charge of the aquafit classes should make a concerted effort to make sure there is a reasonable number of pariticipants in each class. This is not rocket science. If you haven't taken the time to register for the class, you shouldn't be taking up a space.
Positive experience: A major community hub in Peterborough with great facilities and lots of recreational offerings. Drop-in programs could be better organized, especially in the gymnasium. Capping attendees so it isn’t overly crowded would be a good start.
Negative experience: Once again. The schedual posted doesnt match what going in inside. And why they have a telephone is beyond me. Hasnt been answered in YEARS. And i love the whole place reeks of weed down by the treehouse!!! And dont forget its YOUR fault when things go wrong!!
Negative experience: I recently visited the YMCA with my family and unfortunately, our experience was less than satisfactory. We purchased a family day pass, looking forward to utilizing various facilities. However, upon arriving at 4 p.m., the basketball gym was already full of teenagers, leaving no space for younger children. We tried alternative areas, but the inconsistent communication of rules by the staff added to our frustration. On three separate occasions, we were given different reasons for restricting our children's access to the same area. This lack of clarity and inconsistent enforcement significantly impacted our visit. I would suggest improving communication by clearly displaying rules in relevant areas. Considering the overcrowding issue, expanding capacity or implementing schedules for different age groups could greatly enhance the experience for patrons. Unfortunately, our family won't be choosing the YMCA for future outings, but I hope these issues are addressed for the benefit of others.
Fantastic experience: Our little guy loves going to the Y for swimming lessons. The instructors are always friendly and helpful.
Fantastic experience: I explored this place on Friday. What a beautiful, clean facility! Started working out with the rowing machine. Next time will try the pool.
Positive experience: We have been members for over 10 yrs. Kids attend swimming lessons and have also attended land programs. Pool is always clean as well as change rooms. My kids range from 3 yrs old to 16 and there is something for all of them. The treehouse is fantastic for kids under 10. We also recently hosted a birthday party there and it was a great experience as well (and reasonably priced). The only thing I dislike is that the cost has fluctuated since covid. The monthly membership fees increased, as well as the program fees
Positive experience: Enjoy the gym, clean facilities, pool and hot tub are great after a workout. Only issue is the hours on the weekends. I wish they were open longer to help those who work until 5.
Fantastic experience: It fun
Fantastic experience: The Best YMCA , love going there
Fantastic experience: My Kids love YMCA ❤️
Positive experience: Went swimming with the kids was a great time for March break
Fantastic experience: Clean, friendly, welcoming environment.
Fantastic experience: Wow, I'm super impressed by the quality of this facility.
Fantastic experience: Lots of activities and healthy exercise options. Friendly and helpful staff.
Fantastic experience: I love the Y I only wish we joined sooner
Fantastic experience: Friendly helpful staff. Clean facility. Good food.
Fantastic experience: Love the place very calm environment and lots of help available when needed staff are very friendly and helpful
Negative experience: It would be nice if 1 person didn't take up 4 sets of dumbells
Fantastic experience: Aweful gym swimming pool many play ground clean and kids playground many other sports items for old and mentali recovery club great club love it
Fantastic experience: To me it's the best place to workout in the gym or do aquafit or swim
Fantastic experience: The friendly atmosphere and front office have done a great job, great patience and helping mind.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful facility with amazing staff. From the front desk to the trainers everyone is so nice!
Positive experience: Take gentle Aquafit classes 2 or 3 times a week. New deck on the pool. Instructors are fun and knowledgeable. Wish I had started sooner!
Fantastic experience: Great staff, nice workout room, friendly members, not over crowded. I would definitely recommend this location.
Positive experience: Been going Here since I was a kid and never seen anything like this until tonight. A cockroach in locker #71 in family change room when I was taking my stuff out. Was beyond shook and threw a majority of my belongings out. Told the front staff and they said they removed it from near the washroom? Can’t be the only one I’m paranoid to go and leave my stuff there just watch out for them *EDITED* they’re saying theirs no signs of cockroaches but they still can’t deny the fact that there was a one huge one in the locker that could of infested multiple peoples belongings. Your maintenance team didn’t do a good job of clearly checking cause if there’s one theirs many . Just do better
Our maintenance team have inspected the area and found no signs of cockroaches. We will follow up with our pest control people to determine best practices for moving forward.
Fantastic experience: While overall I enjoy the Y for it's programs, it's the people who work there that make it truly amazing! Noah at the front desk is the absolute kindest person, you feel like he truly cares about your experience there and about you as a person in general.
Negative experience: I set up a one month membership and ask them to NOT make it ongoing and they reassured me it was only for the one month just for me to find out a few months later. I have been charged every month since. I called to have the situation corrected and they told me they would not refund me despite the fact it was their mistake and they wouldn't allow me to cancel over the phone and continue to charge me even though again it was their mistake
Fantastic experience: Wonderful facility with a community atmosphere. People of all ages and economic cohorts are welcomed here. Great to see a place like this still exists. The gym, pool and squash courts are too notch.
Fantastic experience: Ive had several gym memberships over the years and this is likely my favorite gym I have had a membership with. Very rarely am I unable to get a bench / squat rack, even at peak hours. Steam room is amazing
Fantastic experience: Pricing is reasonable for a day pass which gives you free range to use anything, I'm looking into a membership so we can enjoy it any day more often. The pool is average. The pool for the smaller kids Is actually nice and warm, the other pool with the deep end is cold, you can also do laps, the hot tub was actually nice and hot. We all had so much fun and we have kids ranging from 5 years old to 16 years old.
Fantastic experience: My child and I enjoyed our visit. I recommend this YMCA to all families. They water was perfect temperature for me to swim in her t was almost like bath water and their is a cold pool for people to swim laps in the lanes and their is a side where you can just swim around as well in the cold pool and the hot tub was hot!! We will definitely be swimming here again!
Negative experience: Today my experience wasn't the greatest with this location. Today was family drop in swim from 10-11am . What do they do take it away from kids and put them on a tiny area on the colder side and bigger pool . They gave a very tiny area for drop in swim . They think young babies and toddlers can handle that area . My 18month old cannot as he hates cold. I also have arm issues so carrying him all the time is out of the question. They did not follow people with disabilities or limitations. They took a drop in spot importance to young families just for a private rental as money always comes first ...... I would have went to wellness centre if I would have known they were taking away a good time for families to attend today . As shown on this updated calender for this season of swimming. Doesn't show could futurely be a private rental slot as it shows on the weekends for possibly. No emails were sent out as I check my email and spam everyday . If private can occur in future should show on updated schedule of future possibilities of happening . Instead of taking a good family drop in time to swim for much younger children .
Hi Alyssa,We are sorry to hear your experience wasn't great today. The Therapy Pool was closed today from 10-11am for a private rental. We shared this notice with in branch signage last week, several social media posts and an announcement in our weekly update email newsletter. To be sure you don't miss updates, follow us on social media and subscribe to our newsletter (bottom of our website).
Positive experience: The steam room in the men's health club was a treat to the mind and senses warming every fibre of my body. Entering the pool area after the steam room made the transition from hot steam room into cold swimming pool a walk in the park. Stayed in the YMCA for nearly 2 hours and on leaving the building felt so shiny and clean that I was sure I was seeing dancing stars reflecting off my skin. Time well spent and I felt on top of the world!
Positive experience: I enjoy going to aquafit. There is a huge demand so often I cannot get the time slot I want. There is a shortage of instructors but this is common to many other aqua fitness facilities. Nevertheless I am glad to have the opportunity to attend.
Positive experience: There should be more hours for adults only swim. There a lot of seniors who come to the Y to work out and swim in the therapy pool but hours are few and far between.
Fantastic experience: this is going to be a 0 star on yelp
Fantastic experience: Enjoy my weight lifting workouts and cardio workouts. Very well kept gym and very clean.
Fantastic experience: A very clean and nice place to do some exercise. Everyone is really friendly:)
Positive experience: Nice Family style place but watch-out the agitated little lifeguard cranky for no reason...
Positive experience: Very busy. The hot tub was only lukewarm. But I had fun swimming!
Positive experience: Sign up was fast and easy the cleaners do an amazing job but trying to contact people from sales has been impossible it seems. Trying to get a billing mistake fixed has taken almost a week with no resolve. No reply to multiple phone messages has made me have a negative opinion towards the sales staff.
Fantastic experience: Clean and well kept... It hasn't changed in 14 years. The only improvement I would suggest is to enforce some more rules in the large pool. There were two of us trying to swim laps in one lane while all the other lanes were taken up with people who were just floating there. Could they not ask the floaters to go in the same lane so those of us who want to actually swim could have some space to do so?
Fantastic experience: Great gym, very friendly front end staff and the memberships are fair priced and flexible, no sign up fee, no cancellation fee.
Fantastic experience: Wonderful facilities, amazing staff. I recommend!
Fantastic experience: Great family place!
Fantastic experience: Many community based supports
Fantastic experience: Very friendly staff, very accommodating
Fantastic experience: The building is absolutely magnificent inside with Many facilities available for guests to access including employment features, the gym, the pool and much More.
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff and experienced KidCare professionals. Love the 25 m lame pool to get my workout in! Very clean and spacious change rooms with variety like family change room. Plenty of parking!
Positive experience: Staff is very friendly and professional. Facility is clean and enjoyable.
Fantastic experience: Good! They’re usually super nice and never gave me any issues when my asd toddler couldn’t wear a mask!
Fantastic experience: Our family loves going to the ymca! We utilize the kids care, steam room, the kids play area, pool and the gym. We all look forward to heading there as a family.
Positive experience: Great facilities. Looking forward to working out there some more.
Negative experience: It’s terrible seeing the YMCA campers in the park fully masked! This is child abuse and NOT rooted in science. Kids should not be asked to mask at all, let alone in an outdoor setting! Such a shame.
We sent a communication to camp parents last week about outdoor mask wearing and how the latest regulations from public health will allow campers within the same cohort to remove their mask while outdoors. Parents now have the option to have their children in masks or not. Some parents may choose to have their children in masks. Our commitment is to provide a safe and healthy environment for our campers and staff.
Fantastic experience: Like the gentle aquifit classes, nice variety of classes
Fantastic experience: Not only does THE YMCA on Park accommodate everyone young and old..but the facility offers up to date Covid Measures making the guest feel safe with his/her visit..Excellent Staff and Excellent Facilities makes this a great place for you and your family!
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff, clean facility, great opportunities for a reasonable cost. Recommended to anyone looking to get healthy and keep active.
Fantastic experience: It great
Fantastic experience: Great workout area and clean
Fantastic experience: Great place. They have a steam bath.
Fantastic experience: Great gym. Pool, squash courts
Positive experience: This is my gym ! Any gym that I get a membership at must have a pool & or hot tub for the after workouts relaxation and stretching
Positive experience: If they had parking available and ensured vehicles were not double parked/ they plowed all of the "access parking" (eg parents with young children and drop off spot) I'd give them a 4. And for 5 stars they would have to put some sort of heat in the changerooms as they are freezing
Positive experience: + A very welcoming gym. As a femme person, gyms can sometimes feel intimidating but this one is not. The staff are very friendly, helpful, and welcoming to all people. +/- They have a wide range of cardio equipment in an air-conditioned environment, as well as a solid selection of resistance equipment; you won't find any specialized gear here however. + There are trainers that you can hire to walk you through how to use the equipment, or to meet on a regular basis for one-to-one training. - The swimming pool here is standard fare. Keep in mind that there are droves of children who use those waters, and I've gotten sick shortly after using the pool multiple times despite the chlorine. +/- They have a cafe in the space which is very convenient, but the hours are limited and you won't get access unless you're there inna weekday during standard business hours (not helpful for those of us who use the gym early morning or after work). + + They have a wide variety of classes that are accessible and welcoming to those who have a standard membership. I love how the energy of the gym is not elitist as many others, but a place to improve one's health in a supportive space.
Fantastic experience: So welcoming and friendly. Clean facilities, great showers, two pools and a hot pool. Looking forward to strengthening and better mobility. Very understanding to your personal needs
Fantastic experience: Great facility. Lots of machines for working out. The pool is great. Kids center. Clean. What now can you ask for.
Fantastic experience: At my age you have to work twice as hard to lose 5 k. The Ys the place to do it. A good variety of equipment and a host of knowledgable personal trainers.
Fantastic experience: Went to ymca with my daughter and my great granddaughter we swam my great granddaughter had blast will be going back.
Fantastic experience: swimming, gym, classes, good for all ages. bright and clean and helpful.
Fantastic experience: From experience I have to say great facility and gear, great staff and trainers, and feeling 100% better mentally and physically. Thanks YMCA.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic place. Even better people. Not at all biased cause I’ve worked there.
Fantastic experience: Absolutely the best way to have some one on one time with a grandchild ... play in the pool .
Fantastic experience: Really nice facility. Very family friendly. Youth night is Friday at 7pm. Drop the kids off for a couple of hours of swimming and fun.
Fantastic experience: Great staff, clean facilities. Love the hot tub even though the jets havnt been working properly in a couple months
Fantastic experience: Always feels like family here the familiar faces are assuring Very welcoming place
Fantastic experience: The YMCA at 123 Elmer Street is a great facility for family and anyone who wants to take care of themselves. They have great instructors. If you go in the pool they have great aquafit instructors. Wonderful classes. I have been a member of different YMCAs since 1952. Thank you very very
Fantastic experience: We love the Y. The staff running the programs and swimming lessons are great, and always very friendly and accomodating for my son with autism.
Fantastic experience: Just the best!! Its the best place. I love it for the kids to do sports, swim, the daycare while I workout. Indoor climbing. We go here almost everyday. I am so thankful for the YMCA and their amazing staff!!
