OpenMat MMA: Avis
Expérience fantastique: I have been coming here for months now and I love it much love to all the coaches and staff.
Expérience fantastique: Great gym and world class black belts and striking coaches ☆☆☆☆☆
Expérience fantastique: I like this place. It reminds me of Dorian Yates' (famous bodybuilder) gym in England, not fancy, not pretentious, filled with spirit & good dedicated people. I train Jiujitsu and I'm thankful to every instructor for their thoroughness in explaining the nuances in technique and for making the invisible, visible. If you like community and commitment and are ready to work, come and join me and let's get better together.
Hi Ivo, Thank you for this honest review. It is great to see you progressing and keep working hard!
Expérience fantastique: I found openmat as it was close to my location. I really like the gi classes and they are very welcoming and patient to beginners. The coaches take the time to explain the basics to me and answer all my questions even if I am in a class with more experienced people. Even the students who train with me are very friendly, creating a very positive environment. There is also a clear path to progressing to the next level. I would recommend a trial class to anyone who is interested in trying bjj.
Thank you B for sharing your journey with Open Mat and inspiring others to do the same
Expérience fantastique: Great gym, great people, wonderful coaches
Expérience fantastique: Great place with no ego. Have learned a lot in my time here.
Expérience fantastique: Absolutely phenomenal experience with Open Mats Martial Arts! Their coaches, Grace and Amber, went above and beyond by bringing their expertise to our women affected by violence. Their patience, knowledge, and compassion created a safe and empowering environment for our clients. The self-defense program they led was tailored to meet the unique needs of our clients, and it was incredible to see the confidence and resilience it inspired. Grace and Amber's dedication to sharing their skills and promoting community safety is truly admirable. We wholeheartedly recommend Open Mats Martial Arts to anyone seeking top-notch self-defense training. Their commitment to empowering vulnerable populations is inspiring, and we're grateful for their contribution to making our community safer. Thank you, Grace, Amber, Stephen and Open Mats Martial Arts, for an unforgettable experience and for being champions of community well-being!
Thank you Christine. It was our pleasure to provide your women with some important tools and confidence, that should assist them for years to come
Expérience fantastique: I'm a beginner at martial arts and signed up here at OpenMat MMA and have really enjoyed my experience thus far. The coaches are great, people in the classes are welcoming, and each training session is a great challenge both physically and mentally. If you're thinking about starting martial arts training, don't hesitate to join OpenMat MMA!
Thank you Tim!
Expérience négative: They renew and charge your credit card without telling you upfront when you sign up. Worst of all, there is a disrespectful person (maybe an employee?) Who walks around the gym being disrespectful to customers. Nah, they are not going to take anymore money. Glad to be out of there. Edit to respond: You are saying that "you caught me trying to sneak in" is a lie, What a big lie! I have never been to your gym again after I last talked to you. I challenge you to prove it. You are not even good at lying, I just check the schedule and you don't have a 10PM class. You deserve 1 star. As I explained to YOU, I came back because I didn't know that my subscription expired, and I have paid for the extra session. This happened in my second subscription where you have renewed without my permission. In all fairness, I appreciate the wrestling coaches, but I cannot say that I had a good experience. And I didn't enjoy my time there. I wish you all the best. Besides that, I just signed a up with one of the biggest wrestling gyms in Toronto, and they did NOT ask for 12 commitment as it make no sense, they are also VERY clear about their renewal policy, and their employees are polite :)
Hello Raed, Correct, you paid for your day pass after we caught you coming in after your membership that you presumably didn't want expired We canceled and you said all was fine then went about leaving a terrible review. We then caught you sneaking in AGAIN to a 10pm class. So we are happy that you have found somewhere to train and we wish you the best there. Thank you
Expérience fantastique: Good place. Coaches are friendly and helpful. The community seems to be very united and strong. Would recommend to anyone.
Expérience négative: I only registered my child for one month but they charged my card without my permission for a second month. Extremely unprofessional.
Expérience fantastique: This is a great gym. I've been looking for a place that combines striking and grappling and this gym offers the best of both worlds. The culture is very nice, everyone is understanding regardless of your level of experience. Definitely recommend trying it out
Expérience fantastique: Superb gym in Toronto, they were extremely welcoming to me as a drop in from out of town and allowed to perfect my art and work with them without any obstacle. I’ll certainly be back when I am in town again!
Expérience fantastique: OpenMat MMA provides exceptional training with skilled and dedicated instructors who are always encouraging. The friendly atmosphere and high-quality facilities make it a great place to train (especially for beginners).
Expérience fantastique: I moved to the city for an office job and needed something to stay fit and active. OpenMat was great for what I needed. Great instructors and staff. Lots of new and skilled people to train with.
Expérience fantastique: Amazing gym, BJJ focused with high level coaches. A large variety of classes all throughout the day
Expérience fantastique: I joined OpenMat last month and I have had a great onboarding experience and transition into training. Their schedule is very organized with classes separated by levels to create an inclusive atmosphere that caters to all individuals, whether they're looking to learn a new sport or seasoned practitioners. The trainers at the gym are highly adept and very welcoming. The other practitioners are very nice as well which makes going to the gym a treat and a nice place to be. The location is also very accessible so I would definitely suggest this place to downtown dwellers who are looking for a place to learn MMA!
Expérience fantastique: I came here to drop in for their Friday no gi class. Excellent, technical, easy to understand instruction, super welcoming professor and students. Professor Denis was very friendly. Clean facility, I’m definitely coming back next time I’m in town.
Expérience fantastique: Just wanted to share my experience. I’ve been training private sessions here since 2019 and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I started without any martial arts background and just wanted to get in better shape while learning an awesome skill. The coaches who I’ve trained with, first Prince and now Ondrej, let me work at my own pace. They’ve both done MMA so I know their skills are legit. There’s also never any ego rolling in privates so training always feels safe. The coaches just let me work and teach me their skills. They also challenge me to push myself a bit every session. So if you’re a first-timer with a busy schedule and looking for an approachable place to learn and get in shape, train at OpenMat.
Expérience fantastique: I’ve been training at OpenMatMMA since 2013, I started as a blue belt, commuting weekly from Owen Sound (2.5 hours away each way) to now over 10 years later, when I can, bringing down my own academy team, and we are always welcomed with open arms. Professor Elliott is absolutely an amazing instructor and leader, if you need high level techniques, he’s got you, if you wana compete, he’s got you, if you wana be a hobbyist, he’s got you. If you need guidance off the mats, he’s got you. And if you can’t make it to Professor Elliott’s classes, he has an incredible team of well trained, prepared for coaching, coaches on the mats. Always positive and approachable individuals, there to help you. OpenMat offers several programs, several class times, Mauy Thai, BJJ (Gi & NoGi) & Wrestling and have a weight training area inside the academy. Joining OpenMat over a decade ago, has been the best decision I’ve ever made as a BJJ practitioner, if you are a beginner their fundamental program will take you from brand new to expert with an encouraging, supportive atmosphere. Do yourself the favour and join OpenMatMMA ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Expérience fantastique: Great service at OpenMat! They treat you like one of their own weather you’ve been there for years or if it’s your first time they create an environment where you want to go back and keep training and learning
Expérience fantastique: I came to that place as Visitor on vacation. They charged me a very fair price while my stay for the NoGi BJJ classes. The hygiene on the mat is taken very serious here, it gets swept multiple times a day. I experienced the instructors as very patient and polite. The other students were also cool, nobody with a too big ego or something. I recommend this gym to everybody in Toronto who wants to start with combat sports or is looking for new gym to train.
Expérience fantastique: Hands down the best Jiu Jitsu gym in Toronto. Here's why: 1. A plethora of world-class instructors - Professors Elliot, Dan, Dennis, and Mike are all fantastic instructors with a lot of knowledge. 2. Classes run all day - whether you're a morning or night person, there's going to be something going on to fit your work schedule most days of the week. 3. Great management - unlike most other gyms, Stephen and the management crew / ownership really look after their members and are extremely professional. 4. Great team - there's plenty of guys training there from different backgrounds and motivations. Whether you're looking to compete and take the fast lane in learning BJJ, or if you're a beginner that wants to take it slow and really get the fundamentals down in a safe setting, the team is very well balanced to accommodate for your goals. Overall I had a great experience for around half a year at the gym and will definitely rejoin once I return to the Toronto area.
Expérience fantastique: Best MMA gym in Toronto
Expérience fantastique: Staff and students are all very friendly and welcoming. Teachers are very knowledgeable, encouraging and tailor the lessons to the participants' needs. Highly recommend.
Expérience fantastique: Absolutely fantastic BJJ gym in Toronto. The instructors here are phenomenal who really go into detail. You will definitely find high quality BJJ rolls here
Expérience négative: Would never recommend this place. They charged my credit card out of nowhere (2 months of membership about $300) after I stopped going there for months and after many follow ups and many promises that they will refund me, they never did.
Expérience fantastique: best mma gym i’ve been to by far. Really approachable coaches and the price is fair :))
Expérience fantastique: This is a good dojo. Super professional, knowledgeable instructors and a friendly student body. I wish I could train here more but my work trip was too busy. They accepted me and showed great hospitality on my Toronto trip. Stephen the manager even called me the day after my class to see how it went. That is excellent PR. Thank you guys. I will be back. Much success - Gus
Expérience négative: I have nothing but the most respect for the staff at this facility! Very welcoming, warm and hospitable. When it came to rolling, many people would only want to roll with their friends and it’s usually college dominant people, looking to tap people by any means (pulling fingers, elbow to larynx, both that i have experienced). The senior members are also incredible though. They’re not looking to injure you, trying to help you learn however, there’s only a handful of them. Overall, great place if you’re experienced and just looking for a place to roll. If you’re a beginner, you might want to look elsewhere. EDIT: Steven had mentioned I would get a refund, but just ended up ghosting me instead. Management needs some work!
Expérience fantastique: The coaches are great! They are patient and explain the sequences so the kids can succeed. Highly recommend.
Expérience positive: I have massive respect for this place! The least I could say about my 4 months of training was that it was great…I like the instructors and the facilities…unfortunately, my journey with them ended on bad terms. They withdrew money from my account (1 month subscription worth 160 CAD) after I paused my membership without my consent. I tried to contact them for a refund but they claimed that the hold on my membership was over and they needed to resume it, although they have never informed me of this prior of withdrawing the money from my account. I had to pause my membership because I was away working for a long time. Sad how this ended. I’d never go back to a place where my credit card information was used without my consent…I’d have been more than happy to support the gym financially but only willingly and definitely not this way…
Expérience fantastique: I enjoyed training no gi bjj at open mat! All the instructors are excellent and pay a lot of attention to students. Classes are fun and the atmosphere is great. Really liked the rigorous approach to the blue belt curriculum.
Expérience fantastique: i sent my boyfriend here for a lesson as we were in the city for the weekend. he has an amazing time. 10/10 would recommend this place. thank you so much to the staff!
Expérience fantastique: I’ve done jujitsu for many years and have trained at many different schools around the world. I have to say without a doubt that Coach Bayev and his other coaches are second to none. They are the friendliest, most welcoming group who are always willing to go the extra mile to teach and to help their students grow.
Expérience fantastique: Very welcoming and high level technique!
Expérience fantastique: This is the best place for MMA in town. No arguments!!!!!!
Expérience fantastique: Great coaches, great facility, great overall. If you are nearby I highly recommend :)
Expérience fantastique: I started at OpenMat about a month ago. I was worried about learning BJJ because there are typically mostly guys in the classes. I was warmly welcomed by everyone at OpenMat and each class the Class Assistant (Amber-- she is amazing) works very 1:1 with the girls in the class. I have learned a lot so far and will keep coming back
Expérience fantastique: Great place to get explore mma. Highly recommend
Expérience fantastique: I came to learn self defence and stayed for the positive culture! All the coaches are so kind and take the time to thoughtfully explain the techniques to you. Not only will they explain the moves to you until you get it but they also make sure that you don't hurt yourself while trying it out. All my partners have been kind and aren't aggressive. I highly recommend coming here to learn self defence and BJJ!
Expérience négative: I took a trial month here years ago and they have #%$%^&! repeated called and emailed me since then despite me having told them multiple times to stop friggin' contacting me and having unsubscribed repeatedly to no effect. Stop contacting. I mean it!!!
Expérience fantastique: Great gym, great people, great instructors and great class schedule.
Expérience fantastique: Great gym and people!
Expérience fantastique: This is a great gym, clean, friendly, no BS egos or TMA cult-like mentalities. There is team unity without things being too tribal. It is one of the few places that still teaches a good amount of self defence and not just sport jiu jitsu. Self defence BJJ mentally prepares you for a fight in terms of knowing what to do, and sport BJJ emotionally prepares you for the pressure and adrenaline. You’ll get both here. It has kids classes alongside adult classes twice a week for the parents, so that was a HUGE plus for me and my son. The one thing total beginners should know is that it is quite technical (each moves have a lot of steps and details). Elliott comes from a very technical and high IQ lineage (Sean Williams of Renzo's) and that is definitely passed on at this academy. A famous BJJ grappler Lachlan Giles - who also runs a school - recently talked about the two approaches an academy can offer beginners: a narrow path, where only a very few moves are learned and mastered with tons of repetition for immediate application - or a broad overview where new moves are learned all the time with less repetition, which favours building a bigger picture at the expense of immediate mastery. I would say Openmat has the latter approach, so initial patience is required. Their new curriculum includes videos, so that really helps, and Prof Elliott also has a great BJJ primer which really explains key concepts for the total beginner. I found that very helpful. The curriculum cycles after a few months, so if you can make it a long term commitment, it will really pay off. You’ll have both a very broad overview of both self defence and sport BJJ, along with the repetition needed for mastery. Highly recommended!
Thanks Marcus! We love having you and your son as a part of our team!
Expérience fantastique: If you're looking for a BJJ gym with top notch instructors and chill positive vibes then this place is for you. Friendly people and training partners who build each other up.
Expérience fantastique: I came to OpenMat MMA for a Rener Gracie seminar. The mats are fantastic and the facility is very CLEAN!
Expérience fantastique: Great place to train and everyone was friendly.
Expérience fantastique: I had a chance to visit OpenMat MMA and was very well welcomed and had a chance to roll with lots of tough guys. Would strongly recommend.
Expérience fantastique: I was visiting from out of town and emailed to ask about dropping in for a class. The GM Taisley was quick to reply and welcomed me with a free first class. The facility was very clean, big and nicely ventilated. Elliott taught the class I went to and was a phenomenal instructor. He went over each move in detail and fixed even the smallest of details. He was very generous and even invited me to join his competition class the following day. If you're visiting or thinking of starting BJJ, I highly recommend you check out OpenMat MMA.
Expérience fantastique: The jiu jitsu trainers at OpenMat in Toronto are AMAZING! They work will all levels, beginners to advanced. I'd also check out their kids martial arts program. If you want a good cardio work out I'd check out the muay thai classes. Some of the best MMA training in Toronto! Highly recommend!
Expérience fantastique: Great facility. I can see the appeal OpenMat holds. Coach Elliott and his team are very friendly. The athletes are all very friendly. We attended for a weekend BJJ seminar and that was a good experience. Thank you for a great experience. Looking forward to many more.
Expérience fantastique: I am so happy that I finally found Open Mat. It is the Jiu Jitsu home I have searched for since starting in South Africa. Their attention to detail and welcoming atmosphere truly makes your first steps into Jiu Jitsu so accessible. Starting BJJ can be daunting! Just go there and get started. You won’t regret it.
Expérience fantastique: Genuine and humble people. High level, high quality training and really great technical instructors who go out of their way to help you understand every detail. Couldn’t recommend Openmat more! Cheers
Expérience fantastique: Fantastic place. Really friendly and down-to-earth people.
Expérience fantastique: My 6 year old has a great time! Quality teachers and clean!
Expérience positive: Great mma gym for wrestling, bjj, muay tai. Bit costly though
Expérience fantastique: Great gym, very technical ,and has classes for all levels. The instruction and team are very friendly, and they know their stuff! I would recommend to anyone interested in MMA and willing to learn.
Expérience fantastique: Been coming here for 5 months after training in Vancouver and hands down best gym I’ve ever been to. Elliot is a world class professor and Val’s wrestling classes turns boys into men. Highly recommend.
Expérience positive: Facility: It's a small basement, it can lack fresh air but not too bad. Changing rooms are very basic and small too. the facility seems to be relatively clean for a grappling gym, no complaints there. There is a weights area, I wish it was used as some sort of stretching/lounge area. There are gyms everywhere in Toronto, I would get rid of it. 3/5 People: The students/staff/instructors are very friendly and nice people, anybody would feel welcome here. 5/5 Schedule: Really good schedule but it could have been better if there were more weekend classes, especially if you're under 30. 4/5 Instructors: Elliot, Mike & Carlos are really great instructors but Elliot does not teach as often as I would like. I haven't gotten used to some other instructors teaching style but that's normal. 4/5 Pricing: BJJ is expensive (compared to yoga studios, which basically are open spaces + instructors, just like BJJ) at any gym in Toronto, and probably around the world, here is no exception. Overall: I have no idea about striking part (kickboxing), can't comment. If the facility was better, this would be a 5/5 gym for a hobbyist like me.
Expérience fantastique: For a wide variety of reasons, I am very, very picky when it comes to picking BJJ gyms. My original instructor was big on jiu jitsu being for everybody so I keep that in mind when I go to other gyms. Open Mat proves that you can have high level grappling without the meathead aspect that many gyms have. Elliot is a very welcoming guy and has a highly detailed teaching style. He often talks about the logical reasoning behind why he is doing what he is doing which is great for beginners who may not understand a lot of the rationale for many BJJ movements. I haven't tried to Muay Thai classes yet so I cannot fairly review them but the wrestling coach is one of Canada's best kept secrets when it comes to wrestling (I've trained with his old instructor). Complaints: I'm 90% no-gi and while OpenMat is one of the few gyms in Toronto that has 7 days of no-gi grappling per week, they all tend to be in the evening with the exception of the Sunday wrestling class. This is not the worst thing in the world, I've just come to accept that no-gi is the less popular form of grappling but I complain about it anyways because I'm spoiled.
Expérience fantastique: Amazing group of people. Instructors are top notch.
Expérience fantastique: Great instructors and people
Expérience fantastique: I visited open mat mma to train BJJ with a friend when they had the bring a buddy week event. The place is nice and clean, great environment for training. Elliot greeted me and made me feel welcomed the entire time there. The training is great, lots of high level practitioners and I would highly recommend that place for people who are looking to train any form of mma.
Expérience fantastique: I dropped in to OpenMat while visiting Toronto for work, and I'm so glad I did. Very welcoming staff and friendly environment. Thank you OpenMat staff for the warm welcome! I will definitely be back when I'm in Toronto again.
Expérience fantastique: I train at OpenMat MMA occasionally when I go downtown to visit my brother, and it's one of the best place to learn Jiu Jitsu. The place is very clean and everyone there is very friendly. You feel welcomed as soon as you walk in. The teaching is top-notch. I highly recommend this place if you live in Toronto downtown area.
Expérience fantastique: Received some really excellent teaching here. There was a great mix of cardio training and technique introduction. As a beginner I felt I was given a good opportunity to slowly develop my skills without being overwhelmed. Would attend regularly.
Expérience négative: The Canadian Tire of MMA gyms. You will probably find what you need but nothing is top of the line.
Expérience fantastique: Amazing atmosphere, friendly environment, killer training!
Expérience positive: Very fun location for groups of friends
Expérience fantastique: Elliot was the nicest, most welcoming person and I had a wonderful time training.
Expérience fantastique: Great curriculum. Great instructors. Great leadership in Professor Elliott. Great people of all belt levels that help you grow each time you roll.
Expérience fantastique: A Self-defense Teaching institute. Very disciplined learning with good coaches.
Expérience fantastique: Great place to train! Friendly atmosphere and excellent professors!
Expérience fantastique: Love the classes offered here. Really patient instructors and very friendly community
Expérience fantastique: A solid martial arts school with a heavy emphasis on teaching, detailed technique and creating a welcoming atmosphere. For many, taking the plunge into martial arts is an intimidating venture, and this school does as much as it can to ease those feelings. There are no bullies here. Students are not pressured to compete, but many do, and often find success. The coaches leave it up to the students as to whether they want to compete. If you choose to, there are additional competition and drilling classes to refine your technique. Due to the friendliness of the students, it is fairly easy to find partners to match up with and drill on your own time. The head coach, Elliott Bayev, is highly ambitious, getting to know every student on a first-name basis and knowing details about their game. He attends nearly all competitions (certainly not a standard for all gyms), and will coach every student (often meaning being there for over 10 hours). For serious grapplers, there is a wrestling program, run by coach Val, a former Russian Freestyle wrestler. The classes are intense and offer solid takedown technique, as well as the brutal cardio workouts that wrestling if famous for. This dedicated program certainly helps those wanting to compete or cross over into MMA. All in all, it is a positive space and a community that fits the needs of different types of martial artists. I've trained at seven different gyms in Toronto, and I think I will stay here. While I had experience coming into the gym, I think it would also be fine for someone just getting into martial arts.
Expérience fantastique: Great beginners class..structured class and patient instructors..the place looks nice too..very open with lots of windows.
Expérience négative: Horrible, not impressed
Expérience fantastique: It's a great environment for beginners, and a great environment for serious competitors.
