Expérience fantastique: It is great to see familiar faces each time we sign up our kids for summer camps. Thank you to all the staff for all the effort they put in to make this happen year after year.
Expérience fantastique: My son does his swimming lessons at Castledowns YMCA. I really like the continues swimming lessons. I also think they can improve on helping the kids to be more successful. Especially if they are repeating the level again. I think this time it isn’t on the kids its on the instructor now. My son has worked with Kit & Amira and this two are an example of an instructor that wants to make a difference in a child’s life. I do hope that they know that they made a difference in one little boys life. We are also doing the Summer Camps. My son enjoys the Y Sci and daily experiments that they do. Ethan seems to be really good from what I hear and my son has no negative things to say about the his counseller or the camp.

Expérience fantastique: The YMCA summer camps are amazing. The full staff is great. They take the time to listen to feedback. The hours are perfect and love the before and aftercare. My son enjoyed all the camps he explored during this summer. Will for sure be coming back for more during the year.
Expérience fantastique: Nice indoor place to keep the kids active in rainy /cold weather
Expérience négative: Very poorly trained staff who can’t even provide clear explanation on admission rates. Every time I come here on the same day of the week and same time they tell me a different admission rate but then claim to have a consistent rule and rate for admissions. Meanwhile their pool remains practically empty and I guess it’s no wonder. I’m tired of getting a different story every time I come here so I don’t think I’ll be back.
Expérience positive: It was fun. I went there with my brother, and we played badminton in the little court thingy. It was kind of weird since it was right near the gym, but I don't mind. Also, the staff members were nice and let us use the phone since we forgot to bring ours (to call my mom).
Expérience positive: The only drawback is the changing rooms, especially the men’s changing room. Some are not very comfortable to use the universal room.. so wish it also had a diaper changing table and sanitizer stuffs like the women’s changing room and was cleaner overall.. Other than that it is a very good.
Expérience fantastique: We are so lucky to have this place so close to us! I love the variety of classes and options available to me and my sons especially since we homeschool and can get out during the day when it's less busy. We've only had our memberships for a short time but it's been a great experience so far! Huge thanks to the staff that make it all possible.
Expérience négative: Had a very poor experience here. After an hour of being there and doing completely fine, they came and told my niece (9 years old) she could not swim in the deep end without doing a swim test with a life jacket. Then another life guard seemed confused as to why she was being asked to do so. They made her do it without the life jacket even tho she was pretty upset about it and she did just fine as we knew she would. The rules board does state it’s 8yrs and below who need to do it and she was older than this. It wasn’t handled well and I don’t understand why she was asked after an entire hour of swimming there with adults next to her when she was doing just fine. The communication between life guards seemed odd as well with the situation. The original male life guard didn’t seem to handle it so well but the lady who did the swim test in the end was nice but seemed she thought it was unnecessary also. It was an odd and annoying interaction. Besides this whole poorly handled situation, the change rooms were filthy. The floors were covered in mud, rocks and sand, hair, garbage and other unknowns. It was not cleaned well at all and didn’t look as though it had been cleaned recently. We will not be going back here. Jamie platz location is 100% better.

Expérience fantastique: The "continuous swim lessons" are awesome for kids. Never need to worry about re-registering for swim lessons and they get advanced at their own pace. The swim teachers are dedicated, work hard, and so kind to the kids.

Expérience négative: Recently started going to the gym a week ago and was given a free trial pass. I was provided with costs for memberships to review for when my trial was over. In one week- they increased their prices over $200. I inquired to see if they would honor the prices that were set a week ago- and was advised I had to find the paper that had the previous prices from a week ago in order to be able to ask management if they would consider this. The price increase was so high- there’s no way I would pay the new prices. Very sad to see such a huge increase like this. I will no longer consider supporting and becoming a member at the YMCA. A price increase this high is absurd.

From what you've shared here, it sounds like we must have miscommunicated our membership fees either when you began your free trial or when the trial was ending. Though minor fee increases are a reality of sustaining non-profit facilities like ours, a $200 increase would be an unreasonable leap for any of our membership plans compared to the 4% increase that occurred this year. Expérience négative: I called before coming here and the guy told me that if I took the membership I could use the pool right away. when I bought the membership the lady who helped me and my son with autism told me AFTER I paid membership that we need to wait till 2:45pm and it is just 1:19pm.She "suddenly" forgot that there is a swimming lesson and its Saturday. So we need to wait at the basketball area. I am cancelling my membership for the next 2 weeks because I felt ripped off and I need to get the value of my money which is $55 for me and my son for 2 weeks. This is crazy, good thing my son has calmed down after he was upset. You have no idea how hard it is to manage a kid with autism and just give us false information and change plans on the spot. I do not recommend this place. I would not even give 1 star for this inconvenience.

Expérience fantastique: I have been so pleased with the Castle Downs YMCA. I had been debated joining the YMCA for a few years but with young kids and the pandemic closures, I kept putting it off. Then last summer it seemed like everyone around me was saying how great the YMCA was and I started looking into it more and finally joined back in January. How I wish I joined sooner! It's such a wonderful place. Everyone I've interacted with has been friendly and welcoming. My toddler loves the childminding area and happily runs in every time. I know he's having fun and in good hands while I get a workout in. Booking swimming lessons for my kids has been easy so far and their instructors have been great. I also enjoy all their events and programs and camps they have to offer the community.

Expérience négative: Old filthy building, bad service, expensive….stopped going long time ago, this place needs to be demolished and build a new Edmonton Recreation Community Center , we are in 2023 and this area looks so old and tired!!!
Expérience négative: Was going to sign my kids and I up for monthly memberships but the lack of enthusiasm from the evening “manager” about showing us around and answering questions made me rethink spending my money there. If you don’t want to be there then find a different job.
Expérience fantastique: I have been taking my son here since he was just a baby now he's almost 9 and he learned to swim and we love the ymca and the castledowns community. Friendly staff and fair prices for the monthly membership pass. The pool is clean and never any problems.

The changing rooms floors are so dirty and full of sands and smell full of urine ,staffs don't do the diligence cleaning the floors after every class lessons . I also been to servus credit union in st Albert. the staffs always spray water and clean up the changing room floors after each swimming lesson in winter time.

Expérience fantastique: This is literally the best YMCA I’ve ever attended. It is the cleanest, best maintained, best staffed, and best managed of any I’ve seen across western canada. The breadth of facilities include, a pool with hot tub, a running track, racquetball court, expansive weight and cardio facilities (lots of machines = zero wait or time restrictions), gym, spin class, assorted fitness classes, daycare, and more (see photos for more). I met first day with Bradley, who was extra kind, gentle, welcoming, and happy to show me around❣️. The price is perfectly reasonable considering the all-encompassing variety on offer. Even the best Golds Gym I ever attended didn’t have as much on offer (and was much more expensive). There was even a specialized machine for someone with a disability. No reason for anyone not to attend here. $$

Expérience positive: We have family membership for couple of years now and we love it , the respect and how they do their job overall is amazing .I gave 4 stars only because they need to change smth about the kids swimming lessons . Most of the time the kid can go twice or more to the same class even if he passed .

The YMCA of Northern Alberta is one Charity (Charitable Registration # 11930 7122 RR0001) with over 1300 employees and over 600 volunteers. It is not owned by YMCA Canada and is a separate organization connected to the other YMCAs in Canada in order to share resources (non financial resources). The YMCA of Northern Alberta includes the 4 gyms (also completely non profit), 46 day cares, 18 program and community sites, and 3 program and transitional housing sites -- all of which are non profit and support the YMCA's goal of building healthy communities by helping fulfill the potential in every kid, youth, and family (physical, mental and emotional needs). 1 in 5 people at every YMCA gym have their memberships supported by the Strong Kids opportunity fund (after qualifying financially) as an example of how the YMCA supports all aspects of health.

Expérience fantastique: Castle Downs YMCA truly do amazing work. We have our 2 kids age 5 & 7 enrolled in soccer, basketball, swimming, and in the fantastic day/weekly/summer camps. The staff are friendly and caring, our kids always have so much fun and ask me when they will go back. Shout Out to Brandon, who oversees the rec programs, he has made registration for our kids a breeze. Shout Out to all facility staff during the difficult times we all have faced. Keep up the amazing work.

Expérience positive: I have been going to the YMCA on and off for are few years as a drop in. I have been extremely happy going there. Its a second family for me. However, it was extremely disappointing to see 2 YMCA staff members (Ferah Datoo and Suzanne Dias) during COVID to not comply with the new restrictions. They did not practice wearing a mask, keeping 2 meters apart nor keeping to their own home. Please, I began you to follow the guidelines and represent who you work for. We are in this together trying to get through this.

Expérience positive: The Castle Downs YMCA reminded me a lot of the William Lutsky one. They have very similar layouts in terms of the fitness centre. However, this location seemed to have a much younger crowd in general, unlike the typical senior citizen population at most YMCAs. They've expanded their fitness centre space to accommodate modern fitness trends, which is evident in the photo with fitness equipment in a room that very clearly used to be a squash court. Not a bad facility overall! They have a wide variety of equipment, and they prioritize the most versatile pieces.

Expérience positive: I've never felt I've had enough room to do my weights. Trying to do a weighted lunge takes room. And my workout lasts over an hour. I can usually find a spot to do my stuff. But mannn if theres like five people doing that where's the room! Otherwise this place is great. Its friendly and clean, I've never had anything stolen or locker busted in but I've been anxious for workout space.

Expérience négative: Can’t say I would recommend this place to anyone. There are kids running around all over the place yelling and using the exercise equipment. Today I saw an ~7 year old with winter boots on the treadmill, and other kids playing on equipment. Not only is this a liability, but it decreases the enjoyment for other gym patrons. Children under 14 should not be allowed on the equipment without supervision. Staff need to enforce the rules instead of browsing the internet.

Expérience fantastique: Nice members and staff. I've been going here 5 times a week for about 15 years. I've never changed because the people are so nice.
Expérience positive: While not a bad spot to catch a quick workout, some of the barbells are in bad need of replacement with something of a much higher quality, such as a Texas power bar. Change rooms were very clean last time I was there. Friendly staff and overall good atmosphere.

The eatry’s service is never open and you clearly need more room in this ymca there barely any place to do workout or no proper soccer field, clearly this place wasn’t designed right and should be redoveleped and add more space there’s a whole field behind the ymca and no one plays on the field during winter add more and make it bigger and tell me who the hell plays soccer ⚽️ in a basketball court how bad is this, the thought makes me cringe and I’m furious I want to be contacted right away!!!!!!

Expérience négative: Moving the equipment around and taking the stretch space was the WORST MOVE!!!! There is absolutely not enough room to finish any kind of workout,a lot of people use floor space as their daily workout. Not renewing next month

We're updating the design of the workout centre to be more user-friendly and better organized so that our members know where to find all of the equipment they need. We're also getting some brand new equipment very soon! We have created a new stretch space next to the functional training (Synrgy) equipment. We would love for you to stay and try the new equipment we'll be receiving! Expérience positive: Great place but Friday Teen Nights are un-controlled. Fights conversation start in gym to locker room then leads to the outside field. My kids felt really scared when kids were yelling fight, fight outside. Just need way more staff and security.
Hello, Thank you for your comment. On Friday nights the YMCA hosts teen night from 7-10pm. This night is dedicated to giving teens a safe place to be in the community. While I understand your concern about last Friday night, I can assure you that there is a dedicated group of staff working on Friday nights investing in the youth that attends the facility. We believe that it is an important night for the youth and that it is a positive place for them to engage in physical activity, visit with friends and have fun. The incident you are referring to is a rare occurrence and did not happen on YMCA property. YMCA staff did follow protocol and spent the night speaking with the Youth about the importance of not leaving the building, not observing or encouraging others to fight, reminding them of YMCA expectations and Values. Expérience fantastique: New to the YMCA, but have thus far experienced excellent customer service, warm and friendly staff and an excellent Aquatics Manager that has gone above and beyond her duty to rectify an error that occurred during swimming registration.
Expérience négative: All the gym equipment is old and used looks like it's been here since the 90's they could really use an upgrade on their machines and weights

Expérience négative: I've had a family membership for the last few years and will not be renewing. My first issue was with kids hanging out on the equipment in the gym and not working out and the staff ignoring them and not doing anything, kids hanging outside the changing rooms on the floor and even being encouraged by one of the volunteers, who was obviously there friend. I've been in the locker room on many occasions when people have had their stuff stolen from lockers. I now only go to take my kids to their swimming class, which never starts on time and always seems chaotic, which wastes a lot of time on a 30 min class. There is absolutely no security in this place, people constantly just walk through the barrier and no one stops to check to see if they are allowed to enter, I see this happening every time I sit and wait for my kids to finish their swimming class in the lobby area. The hot tub is always crazy and is mostly used as another pool for kids to play around in and there's often creepy looking men sitting in there. In the new year I will gladly pay extra fees to not have to come to the YMCA, which in my opinion has seriously become an unsafe environment, not just for valuables but also from some of the people allowed to hang out there
Hello Jon, I want to thank you for taking the time to speak to me on the phone today about your review. As I mentioned I would be posting some of our discussion. I am happy to hear that you would be continuing 2 of your family memberships. A few of the points we discussed were: • Staff taking time to organize the participants in swim class, we discussed that the Castle Downs Family YMCA was participating in a pilot program which did cause delays in classes beginning. This pilot program has concluded and the issue should not continue. • Locker room thefts: The Castle Downs YMCA has a card lock system that is extremely secure, thefts in general only occur from unlocked lockers. • Accessing the facility, there are a variety of reasons people are accessing the facility and our staff work regular shifts, getting to know faces of people. While your perception may be that it is free access the reality may be different. I will ask the supervisor to observe the staff at the times you mentioned and coach for improvement. • The Youth in the facility, the YMCA is a Family facility and youth are encouraged to be here engaged in activity. Staff are expected to address anyone who is not adhering to behaviour expectations in the facility. If you feel this is not occurring there is always a Manager on Duty that you can speak with and will address the situation right away. Expérience positive: Our kids love a variety of extracurricular activities here that are included in their membership, including swimming lessons. The extras you pay for, like soccer, are at a discounted rate for members making it affordable to our family to enjoy some extras.
