Performance Training Centre: Opinions
Positive experience: I first tried the PTC a couple times shortly after it first opened 10 years ago and I went once last week again. It’s still a nice gym and well equipped but is showing its age. It’s also rather disappointing since some of the equipment is not well maintained. When I first went 10 years ago most of the barbells were Eleiko (training bars I think) but now only two are left (in the public area at least) and the spin which definitely was a lot better in the past is barely there now. There are a couple Rogue power bars and the rest are either Rogue echo bars (the most budget ones in their lineup) and even a number of unnamed bars which I feel are quite low end actually. The platform and rack I used had large dents/dead spots in the platform part. It was clean when I went and not busy (I went on a Saturday). They still have a good supply of Eleiko discs (bumper plates). It was sufficient for my training purposes which was olympic lifting but even a little maintenance (such as regreasing the sleeves of the bars) would help refresh this gym. The hours now aren’t great (9-3 on weekends and closed on holidays) either. Overall it was fine for my purposes but it’s a shame to see the lack of maintenance since for example the Eleiko bars are designed to last a lifetime with proper care.
Positive experience: I'd like to start off by saying that when this place isn't busy, it's paradise. I joined during COVID times and it was amazing. Recently though, the place has been overrun by hordes of teenagers, who behave exactly as you'd expect hormone enraged little humans to behave after being cooped up in boring classes the whole day. As much as I'd love to be understanding, the kids do turn the locker room into chaos. Also, the group classes take up a lot of space, with Reserved signs being placed, which relegate paying members to use a smaller corner area. I don't like feeling like a second class citizen and haven't met anyone who does. This is on top of being charged $100+/mth in membership fees, which is a substantial premium over competition. It doesn't make sense and no one should put up with it, unless they can train during the day, when the gym is empty. The hours also got shorter: first, the weekend schedules reduced, without any notice, then - the gym is closed on long weekends during the summer, again - no notice. I loved this gym and was happy to pay a premium membership and drive for 20 minutes to get there, but all good things must come to an end.
Negative experience: Not a great deal, $110 month for nice free weight setups but you have to share the gym with kids sports programs ..often.. very large ones cutting off half of the facility with a "reserved" sign. It's clean and the locker room is nice but for what they're charging you are a lot better of going to GoodLife fitness.
Fantastic experience: This is probably my favourite gym in the city. Amazing facility with lots of space that's segregated very nicely. There are many platforms and machines as well as free weights. The staff are always knowledgable and willing to help or answer any questions! As a weightlifter, I love it because of the Eleiko barbells and kilo plates. No worries, there are also pound plates if kilos aren't for you. The gym is a bit of a pain to get to but it's hardly ever busy unless there's a camp or training session going on. I love this place.
Negative experience: I'm sure it's a great place tho, you can't talk directly to someone through the phone system. No steam room and cold plunge, so for a sport performance center we have some basics to cover. Repsol center has a better recovery center.
Fantastic experience: Left Westside rec Centre after 12 years (due to equipment changes) with trepidation and boy was I wrong to worry Great facility/ plenty of parking/top notch equipment and clean changing rooms Staff are fabulous- very friendly and helpful Love the 2 free membership holds , as I go away a couple of times per year,so its a nice perk Would not hesitate in recommending this facility
Fantastic experience: Lots of racks. It is good for people focus on free weight, compound exercises and functional training. This is not your traditional gym as it doesn't really have any machines.
Fantastic experience: The best gym I've been to in Calgary. Yes, you pay a premium to be a member here but their equipment is top notch, especially if you're into Olympic lifting. The gym is rarely very busy too which is my favorite part. I hate having to wait for equipment, and I have to say in my 2 years on/off going here, I never have. Staff are always really friendly and helpful here as well.
Fantastic experience: Professional gym…. no gym stars or pickup places here. This is the place the pros go to train…. like Olympic teams. Weights are put back, cleaning supplies are well stocked and equipment is in good shape. You don’t need to be a pro to join, but to fit in with the culture you should treat your training like a pro. Staff are friendly and helpful too!
Fantastic experience: A lot of fun. Downhill Luge was amazing. Staff were friendly and kind.
Fantastic experience: Gym
Fantastic experience: Lots of equipment, never have to wait for a squat rack.
Fantastic experience: This is hand down the best gym in Calgary. 12 squat racks, platforms, top notch equipment.
Fantastic experience: Best gym in Calgary!!
