Wilson Climbing Centre: Opinions
Positive experience: This climbing gym is perfect for beginners in the bloudering part! It's small and cozy, and the routes are easy to follow. The price is affordable, and the climbing walls are just the right size.
Fantastic experience: The routes are always lots of fun to climb and the atmosphere is great!
Fantastic experience: I visited it as part of a School field trip. The instructors were amazing teaching all the kids the best practices for them to have fun.
Negative experience: Bouldering area is downright dangerous, there is an inherent risk to climbing anywhere, but the tall walls and spring board floor instead of a mat, mean falling, even properly from any height can lead to serious injury. Which they see incredibly often. Not safe, go boulder somewhere else.
Fantastic experience: Nice clean facility, great place to learn how to climb
Positive experience: They have a small bouldering area with some interesting problems! Grades start at VB-V1 and progresses to V8+. Overall I had a fun bouldering experience, but it can slowly become dull due to the limited routes in the small space.
Fantastic experience: Great staff and nice place to climb. I forgot a hair tie and the front desk guy offered to help and we found a rubber band I could use. So kind that he went out of his way to find something for me!
Positive experience: Lots of routes and they seem to change it up fairly often. Stagg are very nice as well.
Positive experience: Friendly, and knowledgeable staff. Fun and interesting sport routes and bouldering projects for all types of climbers. Great place to learn. Spring floors in bouldering area are very hard which leads to dangerous conditions when falling or jumping from any point on the wall.
Fantastic experience: The Wilson Climbing Centre made me fall in love with not only the sport of climbing, but also the community of climbing. This is an excellent place for both beginners to learn the ropes, and crushers to put their skills to the test. The bouldering lounge, while small, is filled with super fun, challenging problems. From crimpy outdoor simulations to indoor comp style problems, the head setter does a great job at providing variety. The high wall offers a great sport climbing experience with plenty of height and and routes. Though, the resets upstairs are much more infrequent than in the bouldering lounge, so regulars of the high wall might grow tired of the set. Highly recommend to anyone involved in climbing, regardless of whether you're affiliated with the UofA!
Negative experience: Top rope routes hardly ever change. The holds are super dirty and greasy. The bouldering section sometimes doesn't have labelling for starts and tops.
Positive experience: The bouldering is 3 stars because the routes are good but the the wall is really short, change room is cramped & routes are too one dimensional (all crimpy) but the upstairs top rope fantastic looking and I can't wait to get my certification. (They have belay courses as well)
Positive experience: Idk, it's alright. Horrible change rooms, inconvenient hours, tiny boulder area and no standard training equipment but also easily the best lead and toprope walls in Edmonton as well as friendly and helpful staff.
Negative experience: They only let you cancel your membership if you show up in person. What year is it?
Positive experience: Great place to top-rope and lead climb, but boulder area is pretty small. Only major downside is finding and paying for parking.
Positive experience: Best rope climbing in Edmonton for sure. Bouldering area is small and generally congested. Most of the wall is dedicated for lead climbing so you may feel like you're missing out if you're going just to top rope.
Positive experience: Went there for some bouldering, and it was somewhat disappointing. The routes were quite short, and a bit difficult to determine. They also had a weird difficulty curve with the midlevel ones being too easy and one level up being ridiculously difficult. My dad has done the top roping, which has much better routes and is probably one of the tallest walls in town. I haven't personally tried it so I can only comment on the bouldering.
Fantastic experience: The best climbing center for UofA students
Fantastic experience: Well maintained and great facility. Helpful staff members.
Positive experience: Who knew this volleyball-faced dude would drift out to sea all the way to Edmonton and build his very own climbing wall. Pretty inspiring story. Wilson doesn't seem all that interested in bouldering, but he definitely likes to lead climb. No volumes anywhere, and no slab routes, but get ready for a side-pull party on most lead routes. Staff is nice and involved. Change room is even tinier than the bouldering section. Cheaper than most other climbing places in the city, but much better maintained than most (yes I'm pointing the finger at you, RJF). Wilson came a long way since leaving Tom out at sea.
Positive experience: Nice lead climbing and top-rope walls! Boulder area is very small. Stuff is very friendly :)
Fantastic experience: Family friendly fun!
Negative experience: The design of this place is awful. The bouldering is really sad and the manager Lloyd is really rude. The lead walls are awesome though.
Fantastic experience: Plenty of walls for bouldering, no traverse option like vertically inclined in the south end. 6 levels of difficulty, so you're bound to find something at or above your comfort zone. I was very busy from 2-4pm, but climbers were very polite and let others go before attempting again.
Fantastic experience: Very nice climbing center, new, modern, clean, professional
Positive experience: I had a lot of fun here
Positive experience: Fun gym. Great staff
Fantastic experience: Great facility and friendly/helpful staff. Always fun and fun people around.
Fantastic experience: With the highest walls for top-rope and lead climbing in town, this is my fave climbing wall in Edmonton.
Fantastic experience: Legit climbing gym compared to the one at my University. The bouldering area is wayyyy too small, though.
Fantastic experience: Great challenging bouldering problems and the high wall climbing is on another level so you never have to belay in the way of the bouldering climbers.
Positive experience: The centre is great, especially for U of A students who get in for free, but it can be quite busy if you get there at the wrong time and this can mean long waits between climbs. The bouldering routes change on a ~monthly basis which is nice.
Fantastic experience: Very good services with all the equipment needed.
Positive experience: Very good climbing Would like to give it 5 stars but they have no clocks
Fantastic experience: The people really make this place great.
Fantastic experience: Nice facility and helpful staff!
Positive experience: This is an amazing facility
Positive experience: Nice walls and bouldering area. Gets crowded ar peak hours.
Positive experience: Great walls with top notch setting.
