Our comment from FitFit Canada about Tait McKenzie Centre:
The Tait McKenzie Centre is a well-equipped sports facility located in North York, Canada, offering a variety of amenities for fitness enthusiasts and students alike. Highlighted by many users, the center features:
- Affordable Memberships: Especially beneficial for York University students, with annual fees as low as $15.
- Comprehensive Facilities: Includes a spacious gym with a range of machines, free weights, and a swimming pool, which is praised for its cleanliness.
- Friendly Staff: Many visitors have remarked on the helpfulness of the staff, particularly the trainers.
- Variety of Classes: The center also offers various fitness classes catering to different interests.
However, some users have pointed out issues that could be improved, such as:
- A need for better maintenance of equipment, as several machines have reportedly been out of service for extended periods.
- High crowd levels during peak hours, especially in the evenings, which can lead to delays in accessing machines.
- Occasional unprofessional behavior from certain staff members, which has affected user experiences.
Overall, while Tait McKenzie Centre has its challenges, it remains a popular choice for students and those looking for a budget-friendly workout option.
Services, Machines and Guided Classes
Tait McKenzie Centre: Opinions
Negative experience: The gym that will be open.. when? TBD
Negative experience: Most of the important equipments have been broken for months, some even more than a year! The maintenance sucks! There are two hamstring machines but both have been broken for a long time! All of these photos are taken on the same day. The two leg extensions are out of order at the same time.
Positive experience: Good gym facility
Fantastic experience: Tait is an enormous gym with a fitness center and studio rooms. A membership for a student is super cheap too.
Positive experience: Signed up the community membership. Everything seems ok.
Fantastic experience: Nima is a great trainer!
Positive experience: Friendly staff but rusty and worn-out machines (no maintenance in prob 5+ years). Often packed, so get ready to work in with 2 other people
Negative experience: Loved Tate from ‘17 to ‘21, despite having boards and posters about inclusion around the gym. The lady on the front desk was racist as hell. The Indian lady with glasses at the front racist today and made my membership renewal much harder than it needed to be, she was uttering racial slurs behind the desk with her colleague, terrible experience.
Fantastic experience: Nice gym
Negative experience: I don’t appreciate how the swim instructors keep interrupting my leisure space during “leisure swim times.” It’s understandable that they are being precautious, but it shouldn’t be constant. They keep telling not to stop here or there. Not everyone can swim upto the deepend the same pace. Everyone pays a fee to enter here to swim and learn, with or without an instructor.
Positive experience: Gym place is super busy in the evenings.
Positive experience: While the event itself was enjoyable, improving the parking arrangements would greatly enhance the overall convenience and satisfaction for participants.
Negative experience: Gym is so bad and crowded
Negative experience: Online it says the gym is open. Me and my friend spend almost an hour to get to the gym and the doors are closed
Negative experience: Equipments takes lot of time to get repaired
Fantastic experience: Awesome. Great place!
Positive experience: Great price for currently enrolled students, $20 after tax for a whole year amazing. Although if you're not a student at YorkU it's super pricey.
Negative experience: Crowded, bad designed and lots of machines are broken for quite a while.
Positive experience: As expected. B ball court.
Fantastic experience: My best gym ️♂️ in
Positive experience: Generally, it is a well-equipped gym But some machines are left broken for a long period.
Negative experience: The female staff member at the gym, who is part of the Respecton team, was unprofessional and rude. I had a personal training session scheduled for 12:30 and arrived 10 minutes early, but she refused me entry because my membership had expired. Despite being a student at the school, she wouldn't renew my membership when I requested. I also asked her to inform my personal trainer about the situation, but she ignored me. It was only after her colleague apologized and processed my membership renewal that I was allowed in. Based on this experience, I wouldn't recommend this gym for students.
Negative experience: Worst gym i have visited till date. Machines are broken since forever and the staffs are so unprofessional.
Positive experience: It's getting overwhelming crowded compared to before. In addition to that, there has been a cable machine since march of 2023 until this day is not fixed. And two more machines that haven't been fixed according to the expected time.
Negative experience: This gym is filled with men so coming here as a women is dreadful . The gym feels dirty and machines are always taken . Never revisiting here again
Fantastic experience: Very nice equipped facility
Negative experience: the worst gym I ever had, some machines broken and they never fix it,McMaster’s gym is totally free but they are better than your’s gym, trash gym
Positive experience: nice gym
Positive experience: good equipments, but too crowded if you pick the wrong time
Negative experience: They should call it tight Mckenzie
Positive experience: Weekends are the best avoid AUGUST beginning of school and JANUARY new years resolutions.
Negative experience: Super unprofessional teams 10 people are waiting in the line and the receptionist team are not making any progress, chafing and talking all the time Probably 3 min per person to process, that is unbelievable
Fantastic experience: Muy bueno
Positive experience: Make sure to pay for parking. Nice facility.
Positive experience: Love the space in this place. Great for athletes
Fantastic experience: Went for the black belt graduation, parking was on the spot with helpful folks. Washroom, accoustics for the event in the hymn was all good
Positive experience: They need to turn up the air-conditioning on hot summer days... you can stand still in the gym and start sweating before you even start your sports.
Positive experience: The gym is a little crowded during weekdays, res it's good overall in general for basic workout and stretch. It has swimming pool access as well, during certain time periods in a day, which you can check in the YU Rec app.
Positive experience: Good Facility. Went for swimming classes. The pool is clean and instructors, helpful.
Fantastic experience: Great basketball gym. Floor is well maintained and the gym is brightly lit.
Negative experience: The gym is so crowded that you'll never have to worry about feeling lonely or having too much personal space.
Positive experience: Not enough space/ equipment for student body unless you go right at opening, but good equipment and great classes- recommend yoga with Art or Lambert. Only stars knocked because lack of space/equipment
Positive experience: Entrenamos los domingos alli
Positive experience: Often quite busy and not enough space and equipment, but it gets the job done.
Positive experience: Great facility however it is quite old and outdated now
Positive experience: Good facilities and space. Lacks in equipment and execution professionalism.
Negative experience: The Men’s change room showers haven’t been cleaned it’s just a bacteria festival
Negative experience: Apparently you need to buy a locker to protect your belongings. Put my stuff in a locker and had my own lock to use while i was occupied. Came back to see my lock gone and had to ask the front desk about it. Apparently they will cut your lock if you dont buy a locker in the change room and do so with no repercussions. As much as they enforce on buying a locker in the change room to milk out the money the school already does just for tuition, they wont reimburse you with a new lock just for the inconvenience. Now left with a broken lock and asked if I wanted to buy a new one from them...
Fantastic experience: İs this gym for students only ?
Fantastic experience: fitness centre has everything you need!
Fantastic experience: Lovely
Fantastic experience: We went for northern karate graduation ceremony. Place is wonderful.
Positive experience: Been going here since september, mostly like to go in the mornings because it tends to get busy after 11am. Lots of machines and lots of dumbbells with max weight of 110lb I believe. Other than getting very busy during 11am-4pm it’s convenient if you go to york keele campus and would like to get a workout in.
Fantastic experience: Always a positive experience
Fantastic experience: The pool was so clean and it was just the right temperature. The change rooms were also clean. The staff was also friendly. 5 stars.
Positive experience: It’s nice to go to during the quieter times (like the summer) but during the regular school year it’s very busy so there’s long waits.
Fantastic experience: Great place
Negative experience: Probably one of the worst facilities to do business with. Been trying to rent the facility for a month and have been negotiating the entire time for an event that was originally 2 month away. After weeks of negotiating the price kept rising from $1,122 to $3000+ to $5000 a month out. Reluctantly were going to agree then they responded and said they actually decided to decline they event. One month out of our event which means possible a cancellation due to bad faith negotiations. I highly suggestion not doing business or renting from York as you have to deal with unions to prepare the facility or space and a management group that is willing to leave you hanging dry after 1 month of negotiations.
Positive experience: I’ve used the swimming pool and the gym. The swimming pool is clean and not very crowded. It’s 25 meters long. The gym was a bit cluttered and busy when I was there.
Fantastic experience: 15 dollar for a year for full time york university students and 20 dollar per month for full time post grad student of yorku
Fantastic experience: Very well organized and maintained.
Fantastic experience: Good equipment, cheap for YorkU students
Fantastic experience: It’s a nice place for YorkU students that are fitness freaks!
Fantastic experience: 泳池游泳很方便就是时间很有限
Fantastic experience: Great facilities
Positive experience: Dumbbells up to 120lbs, approximately 4 adjustable and 3 flat benches, 2 dedicated bench press racks, 4 Olympic platforms with 2 free placed and 2 on half racks, 7 half racks total, a couple smith machines, 4 pulley rigs, a multitude of well kept and commercial grade machines make up the tait Mackenzie fitness centre as of writing feb13 2023. Several of many cardio machines are present. Staff are madeup in large part of student-workers of York University. The managers Art and Alicia are respectful and warm to speak with regarding in depth conversation of fitness related topics. Shoes are mandatory in all but a 6x10m area reserved for stretching adjacent the reception desk. The overwhelming majority of clientele are York students. Peak times on weekdays are likely to demand patience when using machines or racks. Prior to 4pm during school days an expectation of half maximum capacity may cater to the needs of those seeking an expedient machine/rack focused session. Personal trainers are also available.
Positive experience: I had a good experience so far with some minor problems. The gym is usually empty in the mornings which makes it ideal. It is also clean and the staff are friendly. You do have to book your time slot well in advance and you will only have 1 hr to workout, warmup, access the locker room etc. Time can be tight depending on your routine.
Positive experience: Very unpleasant
Positive experience: We had a great event here Across Boundaries in partnership with Tamago great combination of mental health and addictions and sports! Thia was a youth and their families event.
Positive experience: Nice Staff, but could you please change the tripod turnstile? The success rate of passing the fking turnstile is about 30%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Positive experience: Good quality equipment and overall the students are nice to each other. Could use an expansion and more equipment as rush hour can get pretty busy to the point where 2+ people are waiting for the same machine.
Positive experience: Ok
Fantastic experience: Good place for York students and only 15 $ per year
Fantastic experience: Great volleyball clinic for OVA players
Positive experience: Great place
Positive experience: It's cheap. And decent.
Positive experience: Treadmills are a way to make use of humans to power yorku!
Positive experience: Swim staff are friendly, and upon request, lifeguards give you tips to improve your swimming. Pool is clean, and I think the chlorine level is good, because my eyes don't burn when I don't use goggles. However, around once a week, the pool might be suddenly CLOSED, (sometimes due to chemical level issues), so make sure you call and check if they are open. Parking is usually 80% full. Parking costs around $5/day.
Positive experience: Pretty packed during most hours.
Fantastic experience: On campus gym at York University
Fantastic experience: Good gym for $15 per year fee
Positive experience: Good gym, but always packed.
Positive experience: I was stretching and i smelled the mats by accident and it really scarred me. Also the stair masters have been out for a while, really hoping to see them fixed/new ones brought it so im not constantly racing to grab one after waiting 20 minutes. Also, suggest bringing it some more ab machines. Other than that the price is amazing and im really thankful to have access to the fitness center in between classes. Convenient as hell.
Positive experience: Its not like a big luxury gym but cant really complain because they only charge $15 FOR THE WHOLE YEAR. According to the price, it exceeds expectations. Has most machines, although could use a few more treadmills, regular maintenance, and a bit more room and I wouldnt mind paying like $30 (heck, even $50) for the whole year if these needs are met. But its still good.
Fantastic experience: Exhilarating experience
Positive experience: Good gym, just be ready to work your sets between other ppl because it can get pretty crazy busy during the school year. Best to get there as early as possible.
Negative experience: I failed my exam that I took here, but at least I got to watch people swimming at the end :]
Fantastic experience: A strange layout, but otherwise great. Lots of services aren't very well advertised so you may have to ask at the front desk about everything they offer. Clean facility.
Fantastic experience: Best University in the world.
Positive experience: A bit old
Fantastic experience: Great gym
Fantastic experience: #lionlethal #heartofalion
Fantastic experience: Great stuff! It has more than enough equipment to accommodate even the busiest hours. The machines are clean, safe and in good condition. There's machines for every muscle group and the free weight area is equipped as well. The core and strength area is perfect for deadlifting and other strength exercises. It's spacious and has the right amount and type of equipment, not to mention that it is neat and tidy too! Sometimes you might have to wait 1-2 minutes to get the machine you want but that's with every gym. If you're a York student, with $15 a year, there's a lot to like and if you live on campus, I highly recommend it!
Positive experience: At first the intense body odours smell got to me but since I've joined a year ago they have done consistent upgrades and it's really turning into a good gym.
Fantastic experience: Nice
Positive experience: OBA offered the Learn to Train and Train to Train coaching programs at the Tait Mckenzie facility at York University. It's a program that is very informative and the knowledge that you can use when coaching your rep teams this year.
Fantastic experience: pool and gym
Positive experience: The Centre is well equipped but they keep changing their opening times. If you plan on working out early in the morning you won't know if the gym is really open until u get there. The gym does this often in my experience.
Fantastic experience: Pick the right time to visit to evade the crowd. Other wise great gym for the price we pay
Positive experience: It's old and small but it has everything you need.
