Calgary Climbing Centre Chinook: Opinions
Fantastic experience: We have been twice in the last couple weeks and the staff is super friendly and helpfu! We found that there were a good amount of beginner routes, plus a lot of more challenging routes that weren't impossible for our skill level. Great spot, we will be getting a family membership.
Fantastic experience: It's the best climbing place so far for us. The food is not great, but the coffee is delicious. The people are nice. They do have strong compliance with ID and waivers, which my husband doesn't love, but that is a Canadian problem, not theirs particularly. I sit and charge my phone, have a coffee, and sometimes read a book or the Bible, and the music is never too loud nor too low; it is perfect! We go in the morning on Saturday, and it has never been packed. I give it five because it is a neat experience overall. I do recommend checking the food, like the sandwiches and salads, if they are not fresh or edible, it is better to throw them away. other than that, it's been our climbing space for a long time and will keep being so for the foreseeable future. God bless all the helpful people in this climbing center.
Fantastic experience: Super amazing gym. Rancho and Emma were super friendly and showed me the ropes (haha!) of bouldering. Was even taught how to fall properly, and I immediately sent a C7 just after that!! Amazing staff and routes!
Fantastic experience: It is close to my home, I like to climb in that gym!
Positive experience: Fun gym but the route setting feels lacking a bit. Strange injury prone moves and very inconsistent. The bouldering and training areas are great!
Fantastic experience: A nice place for climbing, it's clean, it's large enough, and the staff is friendly. Definitely recommend
Fantastic experience: If you have kids ages 7 and up. Great way for the kids to build self-confidence. The staff are so gentle with the kids. Safe, friendly environment.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic facility. Provide a relaxed climbing experience with a high emphasize on safety. All staff and trainers are incredibly knowledgeable and friendly.
Negative experience: This gym is 1 too hot 2 has VERY old slippery climbing holds that should be thrown in the trash but somehow they keep using them for their routes. 3 for the most part, they have decent boulders
Fantastic experience: We were in Calgary for a couple nights and decided to come here. I’ve rock climbed before but not for a few years, and it was my girlfriend’s first time. The staff were super friendly and helpful with getting us all set up. We had a great time and would love to come back!
Negative experience: Went to purchase a couple's membership here but they refused since my partner and I do not share the same address. It is extremely disrespectful and invalidating that they would have us purchase individual memberships just because we don't cohabitate. Apart from that, they also required that my partner get their photo taken even though they refused adamantly due to their social anxiety. We took our business to Bolder Climbing Community since they allowed us to have a couple's membership and they didn't require getting our photos taken for our member profiles.
Hi AJ, Thanks for sharing your concerns. Sorry to hear that you do not agree with our policies. Take care, Chris [email protected]
Fantastic experience: This is the best location to learn how to top rope and lead - shorter walls make for good volume climbing on many routes. The bouldering at this location is also great!
Fantastic experience: Ben was very welcoming and polite from the get go. He made mine and my brothers experience very smooth and pleasant. Facility was very nice and challenging especially for us beginners. Larry and Ben definitely elevated the experience.
Fantastic experience: Great staff and location.
Fantastic experience: Home gym for >10 years. Very welcoming and awesome staff + community! Also, so glad they open at 6 am! It’s been great getting before work sessions in
Negative experience: The worker wouldnt let me use my student discount because of my age even though I am still a student. I’ve never had an issue with it before so it was disappointing. For how much they charge for drop in it seems unnecessary to take away such a small discount.
Hi There, Sorry to hear about the confusion. We offer a discounted rate on month passes or memberships, but we do not offer a student discount on day pass admission. Our day passes are based on age. -Chris
Fantastic experience: The best place on earth. I’ve been to climbing gyms in a few different cities and no gyms are this great - with a wide range of routes for both beginners and more advanced climbers, a good combo of bouldering and top rope (and general workout equipment), with a community as welcoming as the one that you’ll find in the Calgary Climbing Centres. They also have kids in the gym on occasion which is great but it’s not totally kid focused which I’ve seen in other cities - there truly is a community to be found for more serious (adult) climbers. I met so many people here which lead me to ice climbing and rock climbing outdoors. The prices can seem high, sure, but they’re really not when you consider everything that you get (especially with the multi-gym passes).
Negative experience: I despise this place. Every time I come here there's an issue with signing in or initialing something or some new waiver. Their other locations are much better than the Chinook one, the employees are nicer and more helpful at the other locations.
HI Matt, I see you had to sign a new waiver yesterday when you visited us and I understand this can take some time when you just wish to climb. When our waivers change, we do need to ask all visitors to sign a new version, and this is a shared inconvenience for all our climbers. Sorry to hear that our Chinook location didn't meet your expectations this time. I hope you will give us another try. -Chris
Negative experience: My first time coming here a couple years ago, the crash Matt’s underneath the bouldering wall was extremely soft and it was like falling into a foam pit. So even if you were to climb to the top and you were to have accidentally slipped and fell, the landing wouldn’t be painful. Now going back.. the place was completely renovated. I understand that you have to sign a waiver in case of injury, but I need to speak on this for the sake of other people’s safety. The cushions beneath were hard. Not really a soft landing at all, and I broke my leg when I last went. From slipping and falling from the bouldering wall. I had to get immediately rushed to the hospital. Now this event took place a while ago, and I was hesitant to write a review. But with the result of my injury and the complications I had to deal with, definitely wasn't safe and the cushions should be a lot more soft, especially when bouldering..
Hi Kass, Unlike roped climbing, every bouldering fall results in landing on the ground. This is an inherent risk in bouldering that if difficult to mitigate. In light of this, we choose only the best companies to work with when constructing our facilities, and Flashed paddling is arguably the best in the world in producing industry leading products that also adhere to industry practices. We are sorry to hear about your injury. As a family owned and operated business, all injuries are important to us and we wish you all the best in your return to climbing, -C
Fantastic experience: Me and my family went for the beginner course at this facility. We enjoyed it and the staff so much and decided to get a monthly pass.
Fantastic experience: Staff are super welcoming and friendly, good variety of sets amongst the various climbing walls, lots of fun to go with friends!
Negative experience: I love to climb at this gym, but unfortunately there have been several occurances where it has failed to open on time. Please make sure your employees are arriving on time since it wastes the time of everyone who drives there early at 6am for a session.
Fantastic experience: Fun place to drop acid
Positive experience: One of my favourite climbing gyms in Calgary. Has a good variety and selection of top rope and bouldering routes for beginners to more experienced climbers. Would recommend coming here for rock climbing in the south part of the city.
Positive experience: Nice place, friendly people.
Negative experience: Terribly organized gym. Another review mentioned going to the gyms early to avoid the busy times, but the gym never seems to open on time in the mornings. I wait outside in the parking lot for 15-30 min from the time the gym is supposed to open and no one shows up. Can never seem to consistently open on time on weekdays or weekends. I would avoid going when they are actually supposed to open.
Your feedback is really appreciated, and we’re genuinely sorry for not getting the gym opened on time for you. Please reach out to [email protected] so that we can make this right for you. We’ll be looking into these instances of the gym not opening on time and are dedicated to fixing this going forward.
Negative experience: Love climbing at this gym but management and some employees are terrible. Gym is supposed to open at 6am Mon-Fri. Waited until 6:25am this morning and no one came to open the gym. 5 other vehicles were also waiting and left prior to anyone opening. This is not the first occurrence of late gym openings, probably the fifth time I’ve waited and no one has opened the gym in the morning on weekdays. Waste of time waking up early to get a climb in. Have some accountability for your employees.
Thanks for taking the time to share this with us. It must be a huge let down to get up early for your session and not be able to get into the gym on time; we’re really sorry for letting you down, and even more so if this has been a consistent experience for you. We’re looking into the situation from our end, and are committed to fixing this. Please reach out to [email protected] with any details you have, and so that we can make this right for you.
Fantastic experience: Great supportive and inclusive atmosphere for climbers of every level. Both roped climbing and bouldering
Negative experience: evenings are the worst time to go by far. The "teams" don't show proper etiquette. you won't be able to touch a section of the wall as it'll be nearly barricaded by kids and coaches. having the team kids go back to back on a problem for 20 minutes straight gets extremely frustrating. the hardest part is that it's every evening of the week during peak times. I'll be sticking to other facilities until it changes.
Fantastic experience: Good balance of bouldering and route climbing, as well as a decent warm up/workout area. They’ve got a big store with a good selection of climbing shoes and clothes and harnesses/rope.
Fantastic experience: Climbed here about every week since 2016. Awesome place with wonderful staff
Fantastic experience: Had a great time thanks to the lovely staff.
Fantastic experience: Cool place
Negative experience: I try and go regularly on the weekend mornings before the gym gets too busy. The gym hasn't been able to open every other weekend for the past 6 weeks. There is staff outside that say "sorry I don't have a key to open the gym." Seems like this place is super unorganized. Also has been incredibly dusty lately... not stoked :(
Fantastic experience: My children attended the summer camp programs and they had so much fun! The staffs are very welcoming and encouraging! Highly recommended to everyone!
Fantastic experience: Awesome facility. They have walls suitable for all skill levels
Fantastic experience: Whoever DJs the melodic dubstep and house music is pure fire. This climbing gym has the best tunes. lol. Also a great facility love it there!
Fantastic experience: Great belay lesson! Maria is very good at teaching! Had a great class.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic! Great staff! Challenging but fun for first timers. Staff made us feel welcome and supported. Large spacious facility so you don't feel crowded. Super fun.
Fantastic experience: 5 Reasons to climb here ⬇️ The staff are always so welcoming ✅️ Very challenging, but have everything from super beginner to comp level climbing & bouldering ✅️ Amazing ☕️ ✅️ Retail and rentals - good prices and deals if you're a member ✅️ Not often super busy, so you get space and time to climb and have fun ✅️ Visit here, you won't be disappointed!
Fantastic experience: Go most every morning, great balance of bouldering, belay, and auto belay. Staff is always friendly and helpful. Highly reccomd this location!.
Fantastic experience: Great place to try some technical if somewhat shorter climbs
Fantastic experience: Very accommodating. Friendly staff
Fantastic experience: Staff is friendly and inviting. Music is usually good. I find they keep routes up for too long sometimes but I can always keep myself busy. The bouldering section they seem to rotate often though. They just added tripods to record yourself which is a great idea.
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff, great gym! 10/10
Fantastic experience: Lots of various routes and options. Not the tallest walls but still great. Small store w climbing related clothes and gear. You can spend hours here. Bouldering area was really cool last time I was there. Go!
Fantastic experience: Nice place if you enjoy climbing. Staff is friendly and they change courses regularly.
Fantastic experience: This place is fantastic the staff are all really friendly and our instructor Micheal did an awesome job on teaching us how to belay and tie proper knots I conquered my fear of heights and falling today at this place! Thank you Calgary Climbing Centre you guys are the best!!!
Positive experience: Would not recommend for daily bouldering. The holds were greasy, it looked like they maybe cycled out routes on a 5-6 week basis. It was also very warm and humid inside, and I went on a cold day. Would recommend going to Bolder instead.
Hi Nathanael, sorry we fell short of your expectations. We have a 5-6 week rotation of all boulders in the gym, resetting zones within the area weekly. We hope that when you swing by next time you'll have a more enjoyable experience.
Fantastic experience: Place is absolutely amazing! Gym is Massive, lots of problems, will keep you busy for hours!
Fantastic experience: Tonight was a lot of fun! Love the bouldering Routes. First time back in a while and was nice to have a lot of walls to practice on. Staff were awesome. Looks like they have regular competition routes added for extra fun. Quiet Thursday night tonight
Positive experience: Been along time since I've been here. Always fun to just hang around. It was so nice to go with my oldest monster.
Fantastic experience: VERY friendly staff and supportive community. Bouldering can be a little intimidating at first but you improve so much; it's very fun
Fantastic experience: This was a very welcoming gym for my first time bouldering. Friendly staff and a wide variety of routes of varying difficulties for progression. Would recommend!!
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff, clean facility. As a new climber, I felt very comfortable here. They have a great variety for inexperienced climbers.
Fantastic experience: Incredible service with extremely friendly staff. Brodie was particularly an outstanding help and amazing person when I went. 12/10 would recommend.
Fantastic experience: Takes good advantage of the space that it has. Plenty of overhang bouldering and a whole wall's worth of top-roping / lead climbing, which is the main attraction. Solid training areas and a few weights / bars if that's your kind of thing. Has most everything you'd want in a climbing gym, but cannot compare to the purpose-built Rocky Mountain location.
Fantastic experience: Excellent facility and super friendly staff
Fantastic experience: Love the Bouldering problems! Staff is fun too!
Positive experience: Lots of climbing options, clean, friendly staff. My little ones enjoyed themselves.
Fantastic experience: These guys are amazing. Good community. Rental shoes are in good condition. I always get those whenever I go. Would definitely visit again. They say parking is tricky but it's not that bad honestly. Customer service is brilliant. I have rented a harness once and it was in very good condition. Prices are reasonable.
Fantastic experience: Staff were so kind
Negative experience: Watching from my car. Watching as cars roll up one by one. Watching the clock tick later and later. Hoping that one of these cars is the one we've been waiting for. The car that carries the one with the key. The key to allow us all access to the gym we've woken up early to come to. Watching every car show up one by one. Hoping they are the key bearer. Holding our breathe watching people get out of their vehicle and approach the front doors. Rays of hope emerge as they step closer and closer to the door. Thinking to ourselves, this is the one we've been waiting for, the key bearer! Only to realize that they too, are a sucker waiting. Suddenly those rays of hope are blackened. Confused, and bamboozled we all are. Checking our phones to see if maybe it was us who are in the wrong and the gym isn't supposed to open at 6am. But alas, online it says you open at 6am. We are sitting here patiently waiting to only be let down. Week after week it's this same occurrence. I sit only to see car after car come and go and realize no one is coming... No one is coming... Please do something to ensure your gym opens up on time. This happens far too regularly
Fantastic experience: Huge gym. Good selection of belays and bouldering. The rental equipment was in good condition and they have new equipment for purchase (good selection and price ranges). We were there on a Tuesday and it was not busy at all. We will be back!
Positive experience: This review is from the eyes of a first time beginner. Majority of staff felt friendly/courteous, but a couple not so much. I did the beginner's course and it was very instructive and fun but I recommend bringing a partner along for best experience. It seems climbing is very popular with the 20's and under demographics, the gym was quite crowded.
Positive experience: Bouldering is great. Kilter board is a nice addition. Haven't done ropes. Walls much too low. Love going here 1x per week.
Fantastic experience: Pretty good place. Lots off different climbs.
Negative experience: Please delete group sessions from your website if you don't offer it. COVID has been going on for three years now. You have no excuse to waste people's time like this. I spent so much time calling your staff yesterday, them telling me we're good to go with all the rates and to send an email confirming the booking. Then coordinating all my group and letting them know the plan. Only to find out today you guys are cancelling all of it and haven't done it in years because of COVID. My favorite part was when I called your staff member this morning to confirm, he goes "I know how to read a website thank you very much". Excellent customer service! Thanks so much.
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff. Nice variety of climbing walls. Reasonable pricing.
Fantastic experience: I've been there twice now. I loved the experience. I'm thinking about get a membership. It's an excellent option of exercise. They rent some equipments and they also have a safe cord that holds you when you fall at some spots.
Fantastic experience: Really enjoyed their beginner class. Great atmosphere and a lot of routes to choose from.
Fantastic experience: Excellent climbing areas.....awesome staff
Positive experience: I used to love this place. But the new interior is very sad for top rope climbs. Very boring. Less dynamic than it used to be. Sorry.
Negative experience: Nice facility with lots of options for different difficulties. One Employee left a bad impression, I'm fairly new at climbing but they acted more antagonist than helpful. I wasn't aware you can't belay unless you take their course and instead of offering to teach (even for a fee) they just told us to stop. Did not feel as though they wanted us to return and that's an odd way to run a business. Another long haired employee was more friendly and I hope more staff take after their lead, they are the reason I gave more than 1 star.
Fantastic experience: Will definitely add it to my yearly Calgary climbing visits list! lol
Fantastic experience: Good supervision and classes. Could do with some more 5.7 climbs, but plenty for beginners and advanced
Thanks Greg!
Fantastic experience: Access to large variety of climbing walls and difficulties. Staff and store products are spectacular
Fantastic experience: Great family time today at CCC, super helpful and welcoming staff. Awesome way to spend the afternoon. Kids can't get enough.
Fantastic experience: A great climbing gym, the renovations have opened it up and made it so large and airy. The staff is always so nice and helpful. There is lots of climbing and bouldering space, lots of varied routes.
Fantastic experience: The facility is welcoming and the variety of climbing available is exceptional. I'm new to climbing and have never felt embarrassed by my ability or limited by my options. This is a very nice community.
Negative experience: We usually have great experiences here. Unfortunately today, we had an awful time. When we first walked in, there was scaffolding set up just inside the entrance to the gym. A worker dropped a heavy set of plyers, feet away from our heads. When we mentioned that maybe their tools should be tied off or scaffold should be barricaded they didn't reply and tried to shrug off the incident. Next we were told there was currently a school group at the easy wall. So after speaking to the desk attendant we decided to come back when the class left. After coming back a second time our 5 and 6 year old only got to climb 4 runs before we were told another school group was coming and we had to move. In a roundabout way we were being kicked out, even though this gym disagrees with that viewpoint. We do not like our young ones to use the auto belay, and the other areas of the gym are far too difficult for them to climb. We were told they could boulder until I reminded them that they were too young. On top of not being able to climb, I wasn't able to get top rope tested which was half the reason we went. Once we were undressed the manager came over to tell us he hung a rope on the auto belay wall. Unfortunately this run was too difficult, and another little child was on the second easier run. We literally had one run as an option. As I understand booking parties/classes/schools I do think it's entirely unfair to take a families money for climbing knowing your just going to nicely force them into leaving. To drive 40 minutes and walk into extremely unsafe working conditions, and have negative interactions with staff is unfortunate. Would rather drive to the west end of the city. Disclaimer: they did refund our money after we asked for it back. Beware and make sure you call to check bookings for the day if you even want your kids to climb here
Fantastic experience: Loved the place! Friendly service as well. It was crowded in there with adults and kids. Looks like fun. Definetely will try climbing.
Fantastic experience: It was my first time there, and the friendly explanations and teachings of the staff were really good and it was a fun place.
Fantastic experience: The staff was friendly and helpful. They also went above and beyond what they needed too. My experience was very enjoyable. Would recommend
Positive experience: Love climbing here, it's right by the train tracks so that can get a bit annoying but it's not a huge deal. Parking can be a bit annoying as the lots are small with weird layouts. Staff are always friendly.
Fantastic experience: I'm trying to get into bouldering and going weekly for starters. This gym had harder puzzles I find but they were fun to tackle even if I can't complete most of them... yet
You'll get them. Keep trying. Thanks for the positive review :)
Negative experience: I called asking for info, and the guy over the phone was were hostile; I guess he dislike answering the phone and customers inquire.
Hi Luna, I'd be happy to speak with you and answer any questions you might have about the climbing centres. You can reach me at [email protected] if you'd prefer to email.
Positive experience: They are excelent . Make sure you know what your doing and great staff . Clean and just alot of fun . Very begginer friendly . The kids absolutely loved it. 3 hrs of fun . We will be back . Thxnk you guys
Negative experience: Horrible experience, expired nasty food, stay away!
Hi, Sorry to see you're unhappy with your experience at the CCC. We don't sell much food, so I am not sure what your review is referencing. Feel free to reach out with any feedback through this post or by email at [email protected]
Fantastic experience: This is where I cut my teeth climbing. Chinook is not the most inspiring climbing gym, but it's solid... the staff are great, the setting is top notch, and there's a ton of variety. If you want to get strong, or get better, this is where you need to go.
Fantastic experience: This place is ideal for boulderers. Love the variety. And they are very good on their covid protocols ehichvi can see is consistent across the ccc gyms I've been to so far. Im planning to come here more often
Fantastic experience: Great family fun. Friendly service (unless you accidentally cross the line where the setters are working). Can't wait to take a class! Love that there are 4 side-by-side autobelays here.
Positive experience: This is a really solid gym with great staff. It is very pricey, and I wish they would lower their prices a bit (I would go to Bolder, but I like having the option to sport climb). I do also wish they would have reset their routes over the closure. But, it is still a really good gym with great staff, and great route-setters. It is far superior to Rocky Mountain, for customer service, and I think the best CCC gym in the city.
Fantastic experience: Great place to climb!
Fantastic experience: Sweet gym. A lot better since new setting !
Fantastic experience: Super friendly staff. Always have new routes set. It can get really busy but if you go off peak times you have the place to yourself.
Fantastic experience: Incredible facility. Very nice bouldering. Routes seem more difficult per rank compared to other Calgary locations but that's fine. Love the kilter board.
Fantastic experience: Well, I just went to buy a few things for Christmas... they had a large selection, and the staff was really helpful and really friendly... and they were very covid safe.
Fantastic experience: Nice gym, friendly staff, expensive drop in fee.
Fantastic experience: Super friendly staff. Always make me feel welcome.
