Hub Climbing Markham: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Great place! Nice and friendly staff. Had fun!
Negative experience: I don't recommend here if you have kids There is a white woman staff not friendly to the family. Maybe because we were asian
We are sorry to hear it. Can you please be more specific so we can look into it or reach us at [email protected] for assistance? We care and want to help.
Negative experience: Disappointing experience. After registering, we were instructed to wait for an orientation. However, despite waiting patiently for 15 minutes, no staff member appeared to provide the necessary guidance. We were unaware that starting climbing without orientation was strictly prohibited and felt unfairly reprimanded. The lack of clear communication from the staff led to confusion and frustration. When staff eventually addressed us, the manager's tone was confrontational, implying we had intentionally disregarded rules. We felt unfairly reprimanded due to the centre's lack of clear communication. I hope you will take steps to improve staff communication and customer service. *Do not lie about CCTV I gave you honest review and you don't even know who I am because my name in waiver is not Evelyn.
Thank you Evelyn for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We take all reviews very seriously and have thoroughly reviewed the incident you mentioned. As part of our investigation, we examined the CCTV footage to understand what occurred. Upon review, we noticed some discrepancies between the details you provided and the footage, including the duration of waiting and interactions with those you spoke to. We value transparency and want to ensure that any concerns are addressed appropriately. If you would like to further discuss the matter, we would be happy to review the footage with you to better understand and resolve any discrepancies. Please let us know how you would like to proceed
Negative experience: I recently visited The Hub Rock Climbing Centre and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. From the start, after we registered, one of the staff mentioned there would be an orientation, and we were asked to wait on a bench. We ended up waiting for about 15 minutes without anyone showing up. After that, our group of kids, eager to climb, went ahead and started trying out the wall. Over an hour later, another staff member approached us and asked if we had received the orientation. When I said no, a manager came over with an angry expression and treated us like we had done something wrong. No one had clearly communicated that we shouldn’t start climbing without the orientation, and had we known, we wouldn’t have let the kids go up. We were never informed that this was a strict rule from the beginning, and yet we were made to feel like we had broken the rules. The lack of clear communication, poor customer service, and the way the manager handled the situation left us with a bad impression. It’s a shame because the climbing itself could have been fun, but the overall experience was ruined by the mismanagement and lack of clarity in their processes. I won’t be returning.

Positive experience: a huge and pro setup, nice to have a place like this
Negative experience: So many kids like Chuck E. Cheese on a Saturday. Ridiculous. This is not for serious climbers.
Hi Ed, we are sorry you did not feel you had a good experience. The auto belay area can get congested on Saturday at peak time, the Boulder area generally should not have many kids in it at this time. That being said, some gyms cater just to adults, we cater to everyone in the community. Again, we are sorry you did not have a good experience with us.
Positive experience: As usual, we went to HUB around 7 pm today. We saw a few people turning away at the door. When we arrived, they told us that there was a private event and that they would be closed from 7 pm to 12 am. They advised us to check Google for their open/closed status, but when I checked, it still showed as open. A few of my friends who were also on their way faced the same issue. I had to drive about 50 km to get here, which meant around 1.5 hours wasted on the road. I hope next time they can notify members in advance when an event is planned.
Hi, I'm sorry to hear about this, it would be very stressful to drive in for nothing. Google does not let us post the way you are asking because they would require us to have a closed time and then cannot list we reopen. So we put it on our website and on our social media. Please check there in future. Those are the only areas we have more control ---We're sorry for your time loss though.
Fantastic experience: My friend recommended this place to me to try out so I went here for the first time. I tried my hands on bouldering, the facility and staff were great. As a first timer I was given an introduction on safety, climbing techniques and the different level colours represented. Other climbers around were very encouraging and helpful, I was very happy to complete 4 climbs for my very first time being there. The price for a day pass and rental shoes were fare especially knowing that you can leave and comeback within the day. I would definitely comeback to climb again and Ive already recommended Hub Climbing to my friends and would recommend it to anyone looking to try the sport out.
Positive experience: Not a great gym if you're a serious climber. The dragon was set with exclusively chossy dynos and didn't climb all the way to the top. The gym is also lacking steep climbing, the majority of climbing there is slab-10 degree overhanging. They seem to cater more to family events and camps than a serious training center, not a thing, but if you're a serious climber than be prepared for that.
Positive experience: Had an event here and it was a fun experience. Parking was limited and hard to find, although there was Tim Hortons within walking distance next door. Our check-in was also a bit chaotic, we spent a good 30mins just trying to sort out what's happening and waiting for instructors for our group. Not sure if it was due to the summer kids camp and summer break busyness. The staff were very nice and helpful once we started climbing.
Negative experience: I am a member here and honestly it's a disappointing gym. The plumbing is a mess. The men's urinal is broken for 2 weeks every month. The water filling station has no water pressure and takes forever to fill your bottle. Parking is extremely limited. The brushes are all worn out and unusable. There are also kids running around all the time. The AC is either never on or extremely weak so it's boiling hot in there half the time. However, the staff are very friendly and helpful always. The climbs are also fun and relatively varied. However the walls are very crammed (climbs constantly intrude on each other) and grading is often inconsistent. Update: They replied to me that the urinal is fixed yet I am here the day after their response looking at an out of service urinal as I type.
Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate your observations and want to assure you that we’re actively addressing the facility improvements you mentioned. The urinal issue has been resolved by our plumbers, and it has been functioning properly since. As for the water filling station and fountain, we adjusted the water pressure to prevent the fountain stream from overshooting the tray, as they are connected. Additionally, our brushes were repaired over a month ago. We understand the challenge of children running around, and our team consistently engages with parents and their children to ensure a safer environment for everyone. Regarding the variety of climbs, some overlap between routes is unavoidable, but we continually strive to keep the experience fresh and enjoyable. Thank you again for your feedback and your patience as we work to improve.
Fantastic experience: Shout out to Lucas and Tara for being super friendly and welcoming, creating a positive and safe climbing environment for everyone.
Fantastic experience: My son went with a friend and absolutely loved it. But I'm writing to actually compliment how professional this place is. There was an oversight with our payment and the site supervisor (Josh L) rectified it immediately. Very impressed. Would highly recommend this place to others.
Fantastic experience: I have climbed elsewhere in Hong Kong, this is the best climbing gym i've ever been to. The routes were interesting, the staff was nice, and there is a ginormous range of climbing routes. Autobelay and Bouldering included. Would Recommend!
Fantastic experience: Shoutout to Tiffany who took the time to make sure my kids had a great and safe experience. Will visit again.
Negative experience: Horrible location apperently same mississauga location rules dont apply because its a different owner !!! Total none sense
Fantastic experience: Great place and great experience. My 7 year old son had his birthday party here. Kids were 6 - 9 in age. They all had a blast, and felt a great sense of accomplishment climbing to the top. The auto belay system was easy to use. The staff were super friendly and accommodating. Thank you, we’ll be coming back.
Fantastic experience: I had a fantastic experience at The Hub yesterday! The staff member that helped my family and I (I think her name was Tanya), was extremely patient and helpful. The staff member could see that my mom was nervous with a mild fear of heights, and she was absolutely great at explaining everything and made my mom comfortable. My mom was even able to climb multiple walls to the very top! Thank you for making this a great family experience for all of us, my mom conquered her fear of heights and had an awesome time!
Positive experience: I liked it more than Basecamp but that's not saying much. There were some really fun routes but also a lot of bad ones. There's a lot to try at least. When I arrived I signed a waiver, but when I went to buy my day pass I had to sign a ridiculous amount of additional waivers. One form was to opt out of the orientation, which as an experienced climber I appreciated at the time but there are so many weird things about this gym in hindsight I would have liked an orientation. I was also asked to show ID and when I showed a non-Ontario ID I was asked if I've climbed in Ontario before. Not sure why that was at all necessary. I mostly climbed orange routes which were supposedly V4-6 but most seemed to be at least a hard V5. I recommend to take a photo of the grading chart because it's hard to read and it's not well advertised. I wish more gyms would just use the V system. The gym has a charming albiet very chaotic atmosphere. Bouldering can be dangerous but it seems extra dangerous at The Hub with people sitting on the mats (there's no other option in most spots) and walking directly under the full overhang part of the dragon. As a result of people sitting on the mats there were some gross looking stains that would be awful to fall onto. Thankfully the kids birthday party climbing area is in completely separate area (I'm looking at you basecamp) and having a slack line is really cool, I've never seen that in a gym! The upstairs workout area is very nice and spacious and has a variety of hand board types. All in all its an okay gym as long as you are extra vigilent about your surroundings. Since there are tragically few climbing gyms in Toronto I'd still recommend checking out the Hub
Fantastic experience: Good location, $39.82 for one person including rentals
Fantastic experience: If you’re thinking of hosting a birthday here DO NOT HESITATE!! We did our daughter’s 6th birthday here and it was the BEST experience we’ve ever had at an indoor activity facility. From the moment we walked in, THOMAS, greeted us so kindly and got us set up. He was there to help us literally every moment we needed it. He went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed and that our guests were comfortable. A lot of the kids were rock climbing for the first time and the entire staff was SO HELPFUL! Some of the younger kiddos were a bit scared at first but the staff took every effort to help them learn and feel comfortable. I’m honestly not one to leave reviews very often but I couldn’t let their effort go unnoticed. Everything went so smoothly and effortlessly (I was very nervous and not sure what to expect going in). We couldn’t have picked a better place to do our daughter’s birthday. Thank you so so much Hub Climbing Markham team! And especially Thomas - YOU ROCK DUDE!!
Fantastic experience: Wonderful place to go climbing - the staff are excellent and very helpful, location is easy to access, and even when the parking is full there is free parking just across the street. Additionally, the variety of bouldering and belay is great.
Fantastic experience: This place is great. Staff are friendly and helpful and there’s lots to climb.
Negative experience: This is probably the worse gym I have ever been in my entire life. First of all and before destroying you, I would like to point that staff was super kind. I had to sign 3 wavers personally. We were 4 and had to sign in total 9 wavers in total. Even for someone sitting on a chair not climbing….. We had to attend training for bouldering and lead climbing. I will be ok with all those safety things. unfortunately there are still some issues more preoccupying than paper signing. You are using in the lead section carabiner that have nothing to do with climbing. Big safety hazard! Also the ropes can’t be checked because of the addition of some kind of tape on close to the carabiner. You could have added 5 more carabiner to attach yourself, if the rope is damaged …. On an another hand, aren’t shoes not allowed on the mat? then, why do staff walk on the mat with extremely dirty shoes? The knowledge of your staff are really approximate. They even struggle to explain how to ,put on a harness …. I have seen ppl making hasards all over the gym…. That means you could do better. Lead climbing routes was not interesting at all plus, very low ceiling. Bolder area was not bad with some funny openings To finish. I have never seen such dirty toilets in a gym. You should probably make a waver and a special training to teach ppl how to use the toilets and keep em clean. See you never.
Positive experience: The routes were really interesting once I understood them, but the mats are insanely tough. Ended my session with a slip from near the top, and hurt myself.
Negative experience: Over priced for what you get especially with kids you are better off going to steal peaks they are much more kid friendly and want kids to have fun and pick up the sport, and so are the staff at steel peaks the hub staff has some staff with real attitudes seemed like they did not want to be working but definitely did not make our time fun will not be back for that reason. Let’s be clear as you have responded I am not opposed to the safety measures you have in place but the way I am as talked to and approached when making a simple error I did not understand was wrong was where the experience for both me and my kids went down hill. Speaking to people in polite manner goes along way but the way we were spoken to was completly unacceptable, I do not need to be scolded in from of people there is a better way to simple talk to people After that all I want was for them to go away and they keep on at it my kids were completly taken back and we left waste our money for waves supposed to a great fun filled after noon was ruined that you accomplished. As usual there is no real response they just state their policy but I did not see being rude and respectful to your patrons in that. Still can not believe you think your staff and the way they talk to people is acceptable. If you have kids and you want a good time there are better places to go and they truly care and treat you better than this place and it is worth the drive to do somewhere else.
Hi Paul, Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are genuinely sorry to hear about your dissatisfaction and have thoroughly investigated the incident. Safety is our top priority, and our rules are designed to protect all of our visitors. It's important to clarify that children are not permitted to clip themselves in or out of the auto belays. This was detailed in your orientation and also in the signage near you. And also by staff who had to intervene. While we understand this might have caused some inconvenience, adherence to staff instructions is crucial. We appreciate your understanding and are committed to providing a safe environment for everyone. Best regards, Steven Hub Climbing
Fantastic experience: There has been a big expansion of their belay ropes. If you're just dropping in and need all the gear it's about $48 taxes in. It's an easy way to spend a few hours. I last visited on a Friday morning and it wasn't to busy. I've been on the weekends too, where it is definitely busier but still manageable. With the new climbs would say that will help with congestion.
Fantastic experience: Go here every so often and it’s my favourite place to climb. Great bouldering and auto belay areas with a TON of space and verity. Great for beginner and experienced climbers
Positive experience: The changing room is tiny (capacity: 4 people sitting, +5 standing, elbows touching). No shower. Lockers rusted , have sand layer in the bottom, some have hooks broken off. Often crowded. Not enough parking if you come on a business day at 7. No top rop - auto belay and bouldering. Route complexity is higher compared to Missisauga for the routes marked the same complexity (especially if you take the 11.x route) .
Fantastic experience: good place, big shouts out to adam for being a real g. There was a man named adam, he reminded of the bibblical adaptaption of the same name. I thought he was a great representation as to what a proper employee should strive to be. adam is the goat
Positive experience: Great place. Aroma is amazing! Would give 5 stars if there was paper towel.
Negative experience: This is just a warning for those families with young ones less than 4 years of age - do not go. Apparently there is a strict policy due to 'insurance' where they do not allow anyone under 4 years of age to go on any mats even to just touch and feel the first few holds of a route for fear of them getting injured while climbing. If you do decide to come with your young ones, you will be looked at like an inconvenient pest and followed around the entire time you are there to ensure you are not doing anything outside the norms of their incredibly rigid and stringent policy. Literally stepping foot in any area will trigger a conversation and warning. We understand there are rules to be followed but please treat us with respect and humanity and not a family with a 2 year old pest with the most cold hearted attitude. Let's be real, how much can a 2-3 year old really climb. As avid climbers of at least 12 years, my wife and I frequented every climbing gym in the southern Ontario area and this was one of our favorite spots. We understand the risks better than most climbers at the gym and trust me, we are even more worried about his safety than the front desk with their insurance policy. He loves seeing us climb and naturally wants to try it out. We even bought him his own rock climbing shoes and we had no issues with him 'climbing' at Climbers Rock or Gravity (literally just touching the first couple holds of a route). If you want to introduce your young ones to rock climbing early, this is not the place for you. Normally it would be the parents standing on the sidelines watching their kids climb. In this case, it is your toddler that will be watching you climb on the sidelines (with one parent that would need to be off mat to supervise). Also a note that some of the front desk staff are terrific and had a very warm and honest conversation with him the day after which was a major contrast to the day before. *Note: To the owners if you'd like to respond, you won't be able to cross reference this name as I used a different name for registration at the facility.
Hi James, we're sorry it has affected your family. Our insurance has been very clear about this policy. We have made every effort to make it clear on our website so this would be avoided.
Fantastic experience: I've been going here for about 2 months now and it's been awesome learning rock climbing here. Place is always clean and well maintained, and the staff here are always so friendly and helpful. I also want to thank Thomas, Karen, and all the other staff for their help and care when I got hurt recently. Everyone went above and beyond to help me and I am extremely grateful!
Positive experience: Just had my 9yo son's birthday party here and was very happy with the staff and service. Everyone was thoughtful, helpful and kind. The staff were great with the kids and made sure we were happy during our stay. The facility takes care of the tablecloths, paper plates and cutlery, and has a fridge to store food and drinks. The party room is spacious. Excellent pricing. Overall, 4.5 star experience. The only small "complaint" was that it was extremely busy (but not dangerous) so it could sometimes be difficult to find a wall to climb within the kids' ability. However everyone had a great time!
Fantastic experience: I booked my son’s birthday party here and they had a fantastic time! Staff were friendly and helpful, they came to check on us occasionally to make sure everything is going smoothly. The room was very clean and well prepared prior to our arrival, with tables and cutlery all set up. All in all, it was a wonderful experience. Will definitely come back for future parties.
Fantastic experience: It was my first time there and I enjoyed a lot firstly I was hesitating to do such activity for the first time in my life but when I started climbing it was a real fun I was tied with. Harness and whenever I came down it was like I am flying seriously best indoor fun activities for all ages no age limit best rates and everything was available there you can rent shoes there but you have to fill waiver forms which took almost 15 minutes then they provide you orientation training you can learn in 5 minutes must try activity specially in winter time they have drinks and snacks too you can buy a small treat in between and much more things to be avail when you will visit you will get to know good luck
Negative experience: Honestly they use to be a great gym. My husband and I were members from 2018-2021. After COVID we slowly watched this place crumble. The sets are no longer like how they used to be. I did noticed their setters have changed, some very young setters, perhaps the lack of experience. But the routes lack creativity and variety. Some are just too dangerous. We decided to give them a try again earlier this year and honestly we feel it’s just getting worse and worse. The gym is overcrowded, not clean at all and very smelly. We usually come as soon as they open, so if it isn’t clean then, do they even clean at the end of day??? Safety precautions is non-existent. Of course part of the issue is the guest there. People were crowding around the mats, don’t care that routes will cross or give others space while they climb. Several times we had to tell guests to get off the mat or stand clear. There’s so many staff members and I watched one of them ignore it and walk away….. Again part of the issue is the community that goes to this gym but the gym themselves have the power to address and change. I do see that they are heavily focused on children birthday in their autobelay area which have expanded, and it is great! Would be nice if they could add in Top rope options given that there’s so many lanes now. I do want to see them do better and make changes. It’s where I started climbing and would love to go back. But given all my recently experience, it’s making it hard for me to enjoy my time there.
Negative experience: Overcrowded and filthy (my friend i was with told me it was even busier last time he was there which I couldn't even fathom). Lazy , boring routesetting (which i get as the place is so large that it can probably be challenging to fill the space with creative climbs). The dragon is kind of cool i guess. Everything seemed highly overgraded as well compared to other gyms. They have a very cool training area on the upper level though. Its a shame that this is the only redeeming quality of this gym.
Negative experience: Expect 30 mins just plain waiting for orientation for no reason even if there's 3-5 employees that can do it just standing round for no reason. Theres like 5-8 employees at the front desk serving just one customer signing the wavier and another few just standing around There's less customers than employees at the beginning of this funnel process and yet you need to wait 30mins.
Hi Steven, I am one of the owners and saw this and am sorry. Noone wants this to happen. Would it be possible for you to be in touch to me at [email protected] attn Steven so I can gather more details about your visit. I can help out here. I hope to hear from you.
Fantastic experience: went there for a birthday and loved it. I like how you can rent flip flops too. the dragon with the foam pit is fun. there's a good mix of bouldering and sport climbs
Negative experience: The service is terrible - the staff are always on a power trip and do not care to listen. They would rather just tell you "no" or tell you they are in charge "their way or the highway" and then they go and snicker with other staff in the same vicinity to tell them what happened. The staff is poorly trained, its disappointing as the staff are all so young, and they think that they know better than someone who is more seasoned in life. The Hub - train and teach your staff better and to learn to handle situations in a better manner.
Hi Anita, I am deeply sorry for your experience. We tried finding your profile to do an investigation but couldn’t find any recent visits with anyone under your name. Can you please be in touch with us with an email so we could do a proper investigation on what happened? Email [email protected] attn owners. Will keep this post up until you reach back and hopefully we can rectify the situation for you. Thank you
Fantastic experience: My kid has never raved so much about summer camp as with Hub Climbing. As her first time climbing, she not only loves the activity but also the staff and kids. She can't wait to go back every day. Thanks for creating such a welcoming place for beginners!
Fantastic experience: Great staff. Constant changes and upgrades. Always friendly and fun. Bring a friend and take your time. Community is very supportive, could not count the number of times I have been encouraged or congratulated by complete strangers
Fantastic experience: Good place to try climbing for the 1st time! Friendly staff will get orientation for new climbers.
Negative experience: Just a genuinely bad gym. I visited maybe 3-4 months ago, and it was some of the worst setting I’ve ever seen, and actually the grossest moonboard I’ve ever climbed on. I mean look at this thing, clean your board, my god!
Hi some clients have complained when we clean the board too often - we are sorry this was not to your liking. In any case, the photo you took was from three or more months ago so it’s not up-to-date. If you came by now at the moon board is updated. Come try our new "2019 Moonboard Masters layout”! As far as setting, if you could be more specific that would help, we have lots of new routes and we’re not sure how to learn from this feedback
Fantastic experience: Such a fun day with my friends here! We aren't very rock climbing-savvy but we had a blast! And we got better as the day went on. Would recommend as a fun, active activity!
Negative experience: The hub used to be a good gym, I've been a member here for years. I'm really disappointed to see the management go downhill. There are kids constantly running around while someone's climbing on the wall. Far too many incidents of staff members breaking safety protocols and rules. The mats used to be clean in the morning, but it's overall very filthy now. The hub is the closest climbing gym to me, but I am willing to drive an extra 20 mins to climb elsewhere and hopefully find a new home gym.
Positive experience: On thé business trip and I saw this climbing gym was nearby. So I decided to checked it out. Many routes for all different levels. There’s also a section with auto-belay on the side. It would be great if they also offer some chalk
Negative experience: They have everything you need, the staff are friendly and helpful. But, I would not recommend this gym to anyone. 1. Cleanness can be improved 2. Lack of resting area in the bouldering section so people tend to seat on the mats which may be a safety hazard 3. The air quality is bad. Ventilation system is not enough to get rid of the chalk in the air 4. There are some interesting problems, but most problems do not look appealing 5. Setting is average There are way better gyms if you are willing to drive 30 mins west or east.
Negative experience: Shady business practices. Serious deterioration of climb quality. My family use to climb here. We had memberships. My wife had to cancel her membership and my child’s membership. This happened pre-Covid. I continued my membership, but also eventually cancelled it. The other day, which would be YEARS later, my wife saw a charge on her credit card. They claimed she owed the freeze fee for a frozen membership, but she cancelled it. Her credit card, that was expired, was magically updated by someone other than my wife, and was charged the fee. They have not been helpful with resolving this matter. There was communication once and have not responded to my wife since. Part 2: They use to have great climbs of varying difficulty. Now, they’re climbs are ridiculous with unnecessary pieces and pieces that just plain simply get in the way. The more “difficult” the climb, the more ridiculous it is. Setters should climb they’re climbs. This is very rarely the case. Update: Since this is the only way you respond, let’s have an open conversation on this platform. To say you couldn’t get in contact with either my wife or I is a lie. There was email correspondence on Tues May 16. She posted a photo of the email as proof on her review, which has since been removed. We’ve already contacted Google to verify why, but I assume it is due to the confidentiality clause in your emails. The screenshot she posted shows she was informed that management would be in touch with her, which never happened. As per your claim of attempting to call, why not email if the calls were not going through? Afraid of documenting the conversation? I find it interesting that negative reviews is the only way to get your attention. We know that the membership was canceled. She was charged one month after the freeze payment started up again. She accepted that charge because she acknowledges that she missed the deadline to switch from frozen to canceled. She got in touch with the hub to ensure that the membership was terminated, and she was no longer billed for it after that. I had also been back to climb under a day pass several times, with zero mention of an outstanding balance on my wife’s account. Notifying your customers of outstanding balances is pretty important, especially when it is a frozen membership balance. So imagine my shock to see a charge of 16 months all at once. I will be disputing this fraudulent charge with my credit card company as you had no right to steal my money. Your lack of organization is not our responsibility. I will also be filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. What was done and how it was handled is nothing short of deceitful and unprofessional. EVERY PERSON WHO HAS A CARD ON FILE WITH YOU SHOULD BE VERY WORRIED.
update: We looked into this in depth and found that our managers had been repeatedly trying to call but you and Marianne Oliver and you don’t answer and/or left an invalid phone number. You also received an invite to talk to an owner directly via email. You chose to not use it. Ultimately, you did not cancel your membership and then asked for us to help with a refund as a courtesy. It is important to cancel an ongoing membership to any subscription if you are not planning to use it. The terms of how to cancel your membership were emailed to you when you signed up and shown at front desk as well - and we have that documentation if you need a copy of it. This issue was preventable and we wanted to help and definitely tried many times to reach you, but at this point there’s nothing further we can do. We are saddened that you have decided to call us a shady business but hope that this clarifies the issue of what happened. Re your claim of us "magically having" your credit card number, vendors do not have a magical ability to update credit card numbers that were not provided to them. You may wish to call Stripe if you have further concerns on this matter. Original message: Hi I’m surprised to read about this can you please be in touch with management directly so we could look into this? I’m sorry for your stress but there must be a different explanation and some way to understand what’s going on. I am one of the owners you can write to me, Steven. [email protected]
Fantastic experience: Great place to relax and climb for a few hours, it’s spacious so don’t worry about being shoulder to shoulder with people. The community here is great, the staff are very kind. Overall amazing place
Fantastic experience: Awesome rock climbing place; they got rope and no rope climbing areas. Good for all levels from beginner to advanced
Fantastic experience: A large climbing gym with bouldering, auto-belays, and a fantastic training area upstairs. The grading ranges from V0 to V6+. The wall is a bit shorter than my home gym, but there were some interesting problems.
Fantastic experience: Was invited to attend a friend kid’s birthday at Hub Climbing. It was a good experience for all the kids. They provide special shoes for everyone there. It was a bit strict for the waivers, need to match my name to the driver’s license. Other then that, overall is ok. Washroom is clean with a change area and shower too.
Negative experience: As a member of this gym for years, I noticed the prices have been going up and the experience has been going downhill. (1) The gym has become what feels like a giant daycare center (an actual daycare would've been better because they have trained professionals who specialized in childcare). There is an increasing number of kids and parents not following gyms rules; climbing on top and below you, running underneath you while you climb. While I try to be extra cautious, I cannot control what others, neither can I defy gravity. It has become unsafe that I try to avoid going to the gym after school or on weekends. That pretty much limits me to weekdays during work hours... It makes no sense to have a membership and avoid going because of safety reasons. (2) The gym is planning to renovate while the facility remains open. My initial concern was the construction dust (allergies) and the noise which may affect the health and safety of the climbers. The solution they offered was "we would like to offer you the option to freeze your membership for a month at the standard rate if you are certain that you will not be using our facility during the construction period." It doesn't make sense to me that I have to pay to freeze my membership for a health and safety concern the gym is introducing. (3) Email response time is horrible. The membership change request form says all requests will be responded within 7 business days. Actual response time was about 5 business days. As a business, if it's taking that long to reply to emails, they should hire someone to specifically deal with emails and phone calls. (4) Parking can be a headache, especially when there's a big party. Even the plaza across the street was out of parking spots... Would appreciate it if the gym posted something on social media to warn about big parties. (5) Settings aren't as good as they used to be. It's uninspiring and not motivating for experienced climbers. Maybe a gym for new climbers or to host birthday parties but I cannot recommend this gym to experienced climbers... EDIT: To clarify, I'm not asking the facility to hold back on improvements but should consider people who are allergic to construction dust (flying dirt, dust particles, wood dust, etc, not just concrete). The decision to cancel my membership and to ask for a partial refund (not the full refund) was not because of the 3 week construction alone but how things are being handled and other reasons listed above. Why should members pay to freeze their membership on something they have no control over?
Hi Venus, you originally reached out to us because you did not want to endure the three weeks of interruptions that might be caused by the facility improvements. The facility improvements and related construction is only temporary. Asking us to refund your membership because you are uncomfortable to endure the 3 week facility construction to add autobelay stations and the new cave is not something we can do as memberships have terms. We kindly ask you to also understand that it’s not fair to our community to hold back on improving the areas. the construction will not have concrete work or be hazardous to your health. It seemed you had some concerns about this. We have offered to freeze your membership with a standard low freeze fee for the month and are sorry that we could not satisfy you. We really are, we’ve had a number of meetings internally to see how we can help you, but don’t know what we can do here.
Positive experience: This is my least favourite gym to visit. Hub Markham is always incredibly packed. There are often 2 climbers on the same wall at the same time way too close to each other, with unsupervised kids running around close to a wall, some people would walk under a over hang without checking if anyone is climbing. I am always surprised there isn’t a limit to how many people is allowed here at once. Yes the climbers should be the ones looking out for those problems, but the staffs are supposed to supervise closely if they allow so many people in at once. No joke this gym is popular, it is the gym many locals from the area join when they try out climbing, but because of that there should be more guidance provided on climbing etiquete. The gym is understaffed for the current capacity, please either let in less climbers or hire more staff. The other thing that keeps me from coming back to this gym often is because of the air quality. Hub Markham stinks, the air is dense and smells like feet. It is likely due to how crowded this gym gets, the temperature is warmer than many other gyms even though it is spacious here. The foam pit is amazingly fun but I can’t imagine how dirty it is, some of the odour might be from there. The gym itself is great, with good amount of problems in different level, includes bouldering and top roping option. It is very beginner friendly, and there are some challenging walls for experienced climbers. The grading seems to be on the soft side.
Fantastic experience: Great place and well priced
Fantastic experience: Our kids love this place and climbing on the walls, bouldering, and the foam pit area. It’s always clean and the staff are friendly and attentive. I appreciate the steps they take for safety (you also have to be responsible for yourself and kids!) but they make you feel like it’s a safe environment. It’s a large space that even if it’s busy doenst feel overcrowded. Would highly recommend for an afternoon outing with the family.
Fantastic experience: What an awesome climbing gym, the staff is super nice and helpful easy going, the self belay section is super fun to climb, can't wait to go back and try the rest of the gym, highly recommend going here for fun or on a date or just to hang out and be in a climbing gym and in a climbers environment 5 stars all day!!!
Fantastic experience: 10 out of 10 would recommend this place to anyone who would ask. They have day passes they have monthly passes they have annual passes and if I were you, I would cancel my gym membership and get a membership here instead. this place is great for all ages and they have specific locations where it’s adult only so you’re able to have some privacy there. there is a gym, included a slide where you can climb up the wall and go down the slide and plenty of room for harness, climbing, and bouldering. I basically had to drag my kids out because they did not want to leave and we stayed until closing. I used to come here when I was in high school and always thought this was a great teenage hangout spot as well. It’s perfect for single climbers and also a group of people. If you're still considering; this is your sign to go!
Positive experience: The staff there were very friendly and professional. They assisted us with everything, including an orientation. They made sure we knew all the safety information. You can rent a harness and shoes there for about $11. You can bring food but there are snacks there (chips and drinks). Bring a water bottle, they have a water station to refill. The kids had a lot of fun and didn't want to leave. Parking is very limited. If you can't find parking you'll have to park in the next plaza or Tim Hortons.
Negative experience: Unfortunately, my husband and I and our little one had a horrible experience here. We were so excited to take our daughter, and if anything she was the most ecstatic out of all of us. We had spent some time filling out waivers, answering questions, some friends had even already paid. And when it came to finally set up my almost 4 year-old daughter she got denied to use the facilities because she was just shy of being 4 years old. Broke her little heart. We had even spoken to the manager, and he denied her even though she would be constantly monitored by us and barely climbing anything past our height. So to parents who want to expose their children to this activity at a younger age, I would not recommend this place at all. To be honest, my group of friends and I who are experienced, will not be coming back after this first experience. So instead we immediately took her to Rock Oasis which I highly recommended! Day and night experience and no age limitations, great customer service and support. Definitely will go back to there instead.
Hi Cachelle, Our website's "New To Climbing" page covers this and would have avoided the situation: For children to be safe, they should be closer to 8 years of age to boulder and to be able to climb the autobelays, they must be at least 4-5 years of age. Ultimately, we are sorry for her experience as it sounds quite hard on her. And sad to hear about your own experience but you need to understand that this information was posted in advance and despite this you were asking for us to make last minute exceptions. This is not easy to do in our situation. We have very little climbing set up to be within the arm length reach of 3 year olds. Our harnesses must fit young children properly because safety is number 1. Asking us to violate our own stated policies is not possible. We are glad you found Rock Oasis and that they could salvage your evening.
Positive experience: The facility itself on the inside is great, the big headache is the parking. Which is always full unless you are going there after 6pm don't expect to find parking. There are only two short strips one at front and one at the back with no way to know if they are full. You could park across the street in the plaza, but there are always loitering vehicles making the situation more uncomfortable than I would like. For that reason I have had to stop going as frequently. I appreciate the response, however the problem is there is not too many options for parking during regular hours, as I stated previously. The latest I can go is 5pm and unfortunately there is no other options until 6pm. I have included the parmap on the door.
Hi Marina, You can park at Pathcom's lot next door, immediately adjacent to our lot, after hours. This information is posted inside the facility or you can ask a staff.
Fantastic experience: I started coming here approximately 6 months ago and I have been enjoying my time here. The reason I’m leaving a review is because I noticed one of the screws in my glasses were loose and I asked if they would have a screw driver to help me tighten it and they were happy and quick to help. I know it’s not much but this interaction compelled me to leave a review. Keep it up (:
Positive experience: We like this place a lot. Sadly, recently they installed double carabines following new guidelines of the auto-belays supplier. This is ridiculous! What, one carabine is not safe anymore? Wow, I didn't know we're in such danger with only one (sarcasm). Come on! I have to lock and unlock 2 kids, my hands are sore and tired. This "extra safety" is BS! Have never seen it before anywhere! Is it a way to charge more for the equipment?
Fantastic experience: Amazing place. Had my son’s birthday party here and I really liked the space. Very chill atmosphere and super friendly staff. Everyone was insanely helpful. They appear to have camps too, I will definitely look into it
Fantastic experience: Wonderful place! I hate how Florian Bors is weaponizing the Humans Rights Tribunal to target businesses like yours who were just following the law when proof of vaccination was required. Thank goodness he didn’t win as a PPC candidate. These people are dangerous and have no place in our society. Go YOU! ❤️
That's very kind of you to reach out. We really didn't want to exclude anyone, it's not in our DNA. It's a difficult situation for everyone.
Fantastic experience: Hub climbing Markham is an indoor rock climbing for EVERYONE! Everyone means adults as well as children at any level of experience and expertise. The facility is clean and spacious. Friendly staffs. They offer classes, camps as well as private functions. Very popular for children parties. A great place to hang out for some active fun!
Fantastic experience: Awesome place to climb. Everyone is friendly and respectful.
Positive experience: Lots of variety for climbing, but mostly bouldering. There’s some rock climbing, but there’s very few of those around. Might be a good idea to just have a little more sitting space near the walls, but still far enough to not be a hazard. Often have a lot of people and a bit cramped at times.
Fantastic experience: New hobby unlocked! This place is great. They have both bouldering and auto-belay. The price is fair and they have a big enough space it doesn’t really get too crowded. We also appreciate that they change the courses and levels pretty often, gives you more experiences.
Fantastic experience: hub has both rock climbing and bouldering. went for bouldering as a beginner and they had many walls with varying levels. the areas are sectioned for different skill levels so you would be climbing with people in a similar skill level. it does get busy but people are respectful to not get in each other's ways. no borrowable chalk however. fun first experience nonetheless!
Positive experience: Great place for bouldering or top rope in Markham! Tons of space available and lots of unique features. The staff sometimes can be an unpleasant time depending on how busy it is Great climbs for all ranges of skill! Beginner friendly and great challenging climbs for more skilled climbers
Fantastic experience: Great place to do rock climbing for a big group of 16. Staff were very friendly and patient to go through the registration process. Staff were very professional to give instructions, ensuring our safety. Staff also are bilingual to accommodate some newcomers in our group. I believe one of the best rock climbing places in York Region
Fantastic experience: Timing of the rotation of boulders is just about right. Friendly staff and climbers. Very busy bouldering walls, auto belay is much more free
Negative experience: I consider myself a member of the climbing community and really don't want to write a negative view of a climbing gym but after months of generally bad service and uncleanliness, need to post a review as a warning for others. Climbing memberships aren't inexpensive and it's only fair to know the truth. Think it's absolutely ridiculous that when you call that you can't talk to a real person--what terrible service. The automated message says because "they don't have enough staff" but there are consistently 4 or more people at the front desk. How is that not enough? Good facilities, but gym is also consistently dirty, especially the washrooms. I recommend changing in your car if you've driven or outside as there are often pools of water on the floor and nasty toilets. Overall, I feel like this gym consistently wants me to climb elsewhere. UPDATED: You apparently can reach somebody if you wait for almost a minute of abrasive monotone in my ear. My mistake for not having the patience a whole minute to ask a simple question. Don't press "0" or another number as that will get you nowhere. Also, not the best way to respond to customers. It's basically saying "we can't talk to you" because we're too busy. It's not a government office... Re the bathrooms: It shouldn't matter when people visit. The washrooms should be clean regardless of the time of day. Most dive bars I've been to have cleaner bathrooms, and I hope that's not the metric we are trying to meet here. Overall, this is pretty shocking for a gym that has been in business for several years. ***Forgot my "favorite" thing I saw at the Hub. One day, while heading into the washroom, I watched an employee enter with a clipboard, make a checkmark on a checklist as if the bathroom were clean and walk out. It was not clean. To this day, I still wonder why I renewed my membership that month after seeing that.
Hi Patrick I'm sorry to read about your experience. There is an option to call through and get to front desk if you wait till the end of the integrated voice response. Can you otherwise please send an email to [email protected] attention director with details of what is the concern you need assistance with. Also can you please let us know when you visited? We've been trying to keep it clean and not sure and knowing what time and day you came in we can better identify the issue on cleanliness.
Negative experience: Definitely not a good place to go with your family that has more than 4 kids as they required each parent can only supervising 2 kids only. If you first time visit the hub, you better make sure you have a lot of time to wait for the orientation. The staff only worried about the registration and getting the admission. My friend and I arrived at 12:00 and finished filling wavier at 12:15. However, our orientation started at 13:20 which wasted lots our time. After the orientation done, already 13:40..My time should not spend on waiting.
Hi we are sorry to hear of your experience. A parent can supervise up to 3 kids (as listed on our website) not 2 so not sure what happened. Wait times for orientations should not be 1 hour. 1 hour is excessively long. We ask you to be in touch at [email protected] with your name and visit date so we can look into this and try to make this right for you. We hope you get in touch so we can help.
Positive experience: Great gym for intermediate climbers who know their way around. The gym features a kids area with learning climbs, which transitions to harder climbs very quickly. Took a group of beginner climbers here and they loved it, however I would still recommend adding some extra v1 rated climbs. The more difficult climbs are great and provide a good challenge. My main criticism is with the large overhang sections of the wall. Harder climbs are usually located there with minimal guests attempting them. I'd love to see some of the harder climbs be located on positively sloped walls. I can't give this gym 5 stars because there wasn't anything that stood out to me. They have a great competition wall but otherwise it's a regular climbing gym. Still worth the visit for climbers looking to tackle underhang routes.
Fantastic experience: We were invited by friends and sent our kids to summer camp at this facility without knowing what to expect. Hub Climbing summer camp went above and beyond our imagination. The facility was organized, clean, spacious, and well-equipped. Instructors were passionate about the sport; campers were motivated and engaged. Rock climbing is now our kids’ favourite sport. We are looking forward to sign up for more classes in the future.
Positive experience: solid spot with great modern bouldering routes. fairly busy but a nice community. on the pricy side however they have some deals. Really wish they would add ratings to the walls though instead of just colours (v scale or font. scale) would be helpful
Negative experience: Too much rules and long orientation for experience climbers. (40 min ) You could tell even the staffs dislike explaining weird rules. weird grading system, no standard grades for reference ( no V grade or anything, just colors) signing waviers took another 20 min, need to sign 2 waviers as well. ( From a foreign climbing coach and climbed a lot of boulder gym/ centre arround the world. )
Fantastic experience: We really like this place: different options and levels for climbing. My kid loves summer camps at this location, always fun.. Staff is so great: kind and professional, creative and friendly. They have a new learning area for small kids. Highly recommend this climbing place for kids and adults as well.
Fantastic experience: Great place for anyone who wants rock climbing! They have different levels of bouldering and auto-belay routes options and they change the route fairly often. Staff are very nice and helpful, place is well-maintained and clean. Highly recommended!
Positive experience: It is a good place and I thought a lot about how to rate it, i gave 3 stars because of the masks, they still force you to wear a mask and in my opinion it is doesn’t make sense how can you workout and wear a mask especially now when summer is coming and it is hot, masks not mandatory anymore especially when you working out. The place itself is great and clean and the staff also nice.
Positive experience: A nice place to go rock climbing. You are given an orientation of the do's and don'ts. You have to book online ahead of time. Try booking using a computer, it is really difficult to book on a smartphone. To avoid extra fees, purchase your own rock climbing shoes so you don't have to use the old tattered ones they have.
Positive experience: The mask mandate is a little annoying, but that’s just a personal preference. I didn’t know I had to book a climbing slot ahead of time until I got there. With restrictions lifting, I’m surprised things are still so strict here. Otherwise, it’s a great facility. This place is fun for climbers at every level. I like how they change the wall holds from time to time. Shoutout to Quincy for going above & beyond. He was very friendly, helpful, and accommodating to my group. We had some new climbers in the group & he made the orientation experience fun.
Positive experience: This is a great climbing gym with a lot of options for beginners and advanced climbers. There is enough space and climbing routes that you never have to wait for others to finish. The only downside here, is the wait time with the staff. We came here with first time climbers that needed a safety review. It tool the staff almost 1 hour to do the review with us, even though they were all free. After 30 minutes of waiting they asked us to wait so they could do ours with another group that just came in. Then we had to wait another 30 minutes for that group to get their gear. Make sure you come early enough to make up for all the waiting you'll be doing before you're checked in.
Fantastic experience: Awesome first experience. The staff were super friendly, especially the girl helping us this morning at 10am forgot to get her name. It was packed for a birthday party but lots of fun. Highly recommended.
Positive experience: The on-line waiver and booking is a little complicated. Recommend you try your best and call for help if you get confused. The staff were helpful over the phone. When we arrived for our orientation appt. the staff were helpful and me and my two kids climbing after a quick lesson and check. Really young kids might stick to the easiest climbs, but there are only two and if it's busy you might have to wait. Check the busy times on Google! We spent an hour or so on the auto-belay climbs and then ditched our harnesses and spent an hour bouldering. A great afternoon and we would definitely go back.
Fantastic experience: Great staff and kid friendly policies. I brought my kids here and two of them didn't like the sport. Miles was very understanding and he did everything he could to make my kids feels safe and comfortable. His patience was amazing and he deserves a shout-out for his great customer service.
Positive experience: Great place to get a full body workout. Friendly staff. Clean place. Would easily give this place a 5 rating but weekends are overrun with unsupervised young kids. It feels like a kid piñata exploded. The parents need to keep their young kids in check at all times and follow gym protocols; observe etiquette with auto belaying to allow others to have a great experience. Still a great facility. We go every weekend.
Positive experience: Big space with options for beginners and more advanced climbers, the dragon can be a fun gimmick the first few times you go. Getting more pricey and oftentimes caters more to kids and birthday parties so don't be surprised to see them running around the gym. All routes are auto-belays so don't expect excellent top roping at this location either. Overall good gym if you live close by, others in the area may be more appealing for more experienced climbers or those looking for a more child-free atmosphere.
Fantastic experience: Great gym, plenty of well set routes for climbers of all experience levels. Friendly staff and patrons. Definitely considering a membership as I'm here multiple times a week.
Fantastic experience: Yo this place is pretty cool. They do a pretty good orientation, and it's just really fun, both auto-belay and bouldering. People there are also pretty friendly by my experience. Would recommend as a place to start rock climbing. It's really fun! They also have a power rack with weights, though it's not really the star of the show.
Fantastic experience: This is the climbing gym I regularly visit and have never had a bad experience since coming here for the first time many years ago. They offer both bouldering and rock climbing (autobelays) here, though it's mostly bouldering that's offered. There is a training section upstairs with hangboards, rings, practice wall, etc. There is also a small workout area on the main floor for squats and some free weights. The gym uses a colour system for difficulty grading ranging from yellow (easiest) to black (hardest)
Fantastic experience: Love coming here! So many autobelays with all kinds of routes for each one. Also, the height is enough that you feel challenged and can practice different techniques but not too high that it becomes more of a test of endurance. With so many autobelays, you can climb a lot in one hour. Also nicely lit up! Definitely worth coming here for their autobelays
Fantastic experience: Great climbing gym with a welcoming staff - I have only done bouldering here so I can’t speak to their autobelay. But the bouldering is challenging and they have tons of walls/variety of boulders.
Fantastic experience: We went 2 weeks ago and it was very safe. They only allowed 8 climbers every hour, and each climber was provided a 2 hour window. We got an early timeslot, so the facility was quite empty while we were there. Which provided for a fun, safe environment.
Thanks KC for this. We appreciate your feedback very much.
Positive experience: A gym for beginners (mostly). I haven’t been back for a few years and the route setting has changed. I can tell people who use to route set at the Hub are no longer around. Many of the blue tapes felt like VBs or V1s, not challenging enough. Also, I was slightly annoyed with the lack of staff in the bouldering section. No one was monitoring that area and MANY many times when I was climbing, people were in my fall zone. It seems like this particular gym does not go through orientation probably. I almost swung my leg at someone’s face yesterday when I was in the cave section. Gym is well maintained and clean nevertheless.
Hi Anna, Thank you for your review. We just received it and are looking into the issues right now.
Fantastic experience: Great place for bouldering. They have a decent number of autobelays set up as well.
