CrossFit® Ville-Marie: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Excellent
Fantastic experience: This gym was great! I had a really great experience here. The instruction and facilities are top notch.
Hey J! Im glad you liked! Enjoy your trip!
Fantastic experience: Very nice and supportive staff. I’ve enjoyed the six months I trained here. Special thanks to Rob for your patience.
Fantastic experience: Workout has never been that motivated. You feel you are being encouraged by everyone at the trainning. People are nice and respectful.
Glad you like it here Chris/Zian!
Fantastic experience: Great space with a good crowd. Instructor pushes you to do the lifts technically correct and is involved in the WODs. Good schedule of sessions and creative WODs. For all skill levels too!
Always great to have you here Matt/Chad.
Fantastic experience: I've been training at Crossfit Ville-Marie for about a year and a half. I only have good things to say. Both Rob and Paul are excellent coaches -- smart, knowledgeable, funny... and mostly pleasant. Prior to joining this gym, I had tried + quit a number of gyms, never really took to it at all. But now I look forward to class and have a sincere + growing interest in fitness. Big recommend. It's a life changer. Ignore the haters.
Glad to have you here Kate!
Negative experience: I’ve been to 5 different CrossFit boxes for drop-ins and this one is by far the worst. First, the coach was late to the class by over 5 minutes. When you are paying for a 45 minute class, you expect to be able to utilize the entire time and not cut out the warmup to make up for it. I also arrived early to ensure there’d be enough time to pay for the class and sign the waiver, so I ended up waiting 15 minutes outside in front of a locked door with other members. During the class, I let the coach know that I had a few injuries and wanted to scale some of the movements to a lighter weight. The coach literally laughed in my face and said no. I had to Rx, no exceptions. I appreciate that he thinks I’m so capable, but I’d rather not make my injuries worse as I am still recovering. I would also rather scale a workout and be able to finish it rather than trying to Rx it and not getting through the entire thing. He also never supervised me (or anyone else) during any of the movements so I could have been doing all of them wrong and would not have known. Thankfully, I have great coaches in my home gym that helped me get to where I am today. If you are visiting Montreal, I am sure there are other boxes that are a lot better and more inviting, and would rather you scale to prevent an injury than tell you that you have to Rx. Looking at the other reviews, it looks like rude coaches is the norm here for drop-ins. I am highly disappointed that I spent $25 here.
Fantastic experience: Dropped in and experienced a great gym and top notch coaching. Coach and owner Roberto gave helpful cues and clearly has significant expertise. He also made us feel welcome as drop-ins and gave us clear guidelines well in advance of showing up. Would love to visit again next time we’re in Montreal.
Fantastic experience: Dropped In here for a workout. Emailed them via their website and they were very responsive. Only problem was you couldn't drop the weights (50 burpee penalty) but that's what you get for being in the city. Otherwise, coach was very helpful. Would recommend
Fantastic experience: I have only been to one CrossFit gym in the past, so maybe my word does not hold much weight but I do enjoy this gym (have been attending for a little over a week). However, that’s not to say that I am in full agreement with how things are conducted during WODs. I’ll break everything down into pros and cons; Pros: - Decent range of equipment, including collar clips for the barbells (much easier to use) - Varied workout routines, which make each day pretty challenging - Coaches and clients are all pretty friendly, and I’ve even had fellow clients assist me with my form without having to ask. - Easy to pay (I do cash) and decent price points (there’s an option for everyone). Also no contract necessary! Cons: - Sometimes I feel that the coaches are not attentive, which is worrying as I still do not know how to do all of the movements and my priority is to execute perfect form as opposed to being sloppy and over-encumbering myself. - Coaches can at times seem over-demanding, but I think this is just as a means of encouragement. I think it’s important to do the amount of weight you feel comfortable with, even if it is insisted you do more (especially for those who have past workout injuries or feel injury-prone). - Not the cleanest gym, but pretty standard. If anything could be improved upon, I would say more attentiveness from the coaches with form. Also, less demands to add weight when one feels comfortable and can perform the exercise without any slip-ups would be ideal.
Negative experience: The guy Roberto at this gym was very rude to me when I first arrived. Just visiting Montreal and was hoping to do a drop in at a box near me. Barely got in the door when he first got mad at me for not reserving online. Then he got mad at me for wearing my shoes outside.. then he just says they don’t take card and that I have to go to an atm if I want to join. I’ve never felt so unwelcome haha. Was like he would have preferred if I didn’t come. Can’t recommend this place..
I never sugarcoat anything, and sending a quick note of your arrival is only common courtesy. All of those instructions would've been communicated to you if you only had taken the time to book in advance, like we ask people to do. Hope you got a good workout and enjoyed your trip in Montreal!
Fantastic experience: What a great box! Everyone was welcoming and friendly and coach was exactly what I needed. As a drop in, they made me feel welcomed and supported. Thanks for a great morning.
Grad you liked your time in our humble palace Trevor!
Negative experience: J ai paye en cash, je n ai jamais eu de recu. J'ai demande un remboursement pour un mois que je n ai pas effectue, je n ai jamais ete rembourser.
Negative experience: Good equipment and good programming. The coach was welcoming and made sure I do all the exercises properly as a drop-in guest. The men's bathroom/lockers was the dirtiest I have even seen in my life. There was layers of dust and chalk everywhere.
Fantastic experience: I've been training at CFVM for a little over 3 years. When I started I was barely able to lift the empty barbell and throughout the years Rob and the other coaches have helped me grow tremendously. CFVM is a small box, with an amazing community and it has become my second home, and its members my second family. For new members and people who drop in, yes, Rob is an acquired taste. He's not the super friendly coach who will sweet talk you into lifting heavier. And yes, he's got a pretty caustic sense of humour. But if you listen to his advice (or even better, ask for it!) he will definitely help you become a better crossfiter.
Glad you still like it here ;) !
Fantastic experience: I dropped in twice while traveling. Nice facility with great coaches!
Glad you liked our workouts!
Fantastic experience: The owner is really knowledgeable and willing to help you. it's not an intimidating environment and everyone is very welcoming and friendly
Glad you liked your workouts here Becka!
Fantastic experience: Worked out here on a Wednesday evening while traveling for work. Super friendly staff and clientele. Great workout. Would return.
Glad you liked your workout Joe, see you around!
Negative experience: Pretty underwhelmed by the hospitality shown here. I’ve been an avid cross-fitter for many years and frequently ‘drop-in’ at gyms all over North America as I travel often as a pilot and have never had issue. Was made to immediately feel unwelcome here as soon as I arrived - from the reviews it appears this is part of the norm. They don’t accept credit/debit and I was told right away I needed to go get cash. Not the inviting cross-fit community I’ve become accustomed to and will not be returning.
Hi! Not sure how your review can reflect anything as you never did a class with us. You came in, I asked if you had send us an email as I had a few visitors coming in and wanted to check attendance. I also suggested that you should always contact the gym you're about to travel to in case they have anything you should know, like using different shoes for inside and outside to avoid shards of glass in your hands while doing burpees, or like the fact that they only take cash money for drop-ins as they don't have the credit card machine. It also avoids overloading the class, which is capped at 12 people. You can blame us all you want for not planning your visit to our gym, but we are trying to make sure everyone has room and things need to be done a certain way. Not sure how requiring payment as a business makes us bad guys though. It's a business. Payment is required. You still had 10 minutes before the class started. I wish you good luck in your fitness endeavors.
Negative experience: I understand the difference between mean and direct. The owner is just straight up not nice. All my LGBT friends and I that went there felt that way. Avoid.
Hi, I indeed will not sugar coat anything. Not sure how the LGBT community has anything to do with your own personal experience. Judging from the people that come here and the enthusiasm we get, it seems it was indeed a one person's point of view. Good luck in your fitness endeavors!
Fantastic experience: Great coaches! Awesome workout!
Positive experience: Le gym est très privé. .. A côté de la station météo place des arts leur personnel très respectueux. .
Fantastic experience: Great place! Small gym but all you need is there. Friendly community with a wide range of level experience. You need help? Just ask, always someone to give you trick and Roberto is always ready to fine tunning your technic. I good place to sweat!
Fantastic experience: I've been a member for more than 3 years now. In the best shape of my life.
Negative experience: I am on a visit from the United States and wanted to drop in and was told they did not allow drop ins on Fridays. Because I didn't have internet connection I was unable to see this up front. I had walked 40 minutes to this gym as this was the closest one I could find. They indeed explained me how to get to another gym near, but that would have been an hour walking back. When I told them that, they still wouldn't make an exception and they just said: well, I'm afraid you will have to walk back home then. I am extremely disappointed. I have NEVER been turned away from a gym, and I travel a lot and have numerous gyms all over the world.i understand classes can get busy and it's a team workout, but they could at least let you stay and see if the class maybe is smaller that day and let you join in if it is so.
Negative experience: Stopped in as a drop in on vacation and was told no drop ins on fridays. There was one other person in the box/signed up so it wasn't that they were full. Never have I ever been turned away as a drop in at a crossfit gym. Very disappointing.
Hello Danielle, we indeed do not allow non-members to drop in our Friday classes as they are team workouts that we use to build our tight community. Im sure you understand as I understand your disappointment. As i remember clearly, I also indicated precisely the location of another CrossFit gym nearby who I knew accepted drop ins on any day. Hope you got a good workout in!
Fantastic experience: We came for a month to Montreal and while staying in downtown we looked after a box to keep our CrossFit training, first we tried Mansfield but the box is on a basement and it's too small to enjoy. Then we went to CrossFit Ville Marie and we enjoyed the whole month training every day. The box is not as big as we are used to, but it's very well located and the coaches are great. Also we felt very well received by all the regulars. Roberto has his way, he seems distant but he is always pushing you hard and if you needed he will be all over you checking on every movement. Thanks Roberto and Seing!
It was nice having you at our box for july guys! See you around!
Fantastic experience: A great box with great coaches who help and push you to reach you potential. A positive, friendly environment to train in downtown Montreal.
Negative experience: The worst box I've seen in two years of droping-in different boxes in different countries. Really small, coaching staff clearly incompetent, bad forms and techniques not corrected (overweighted OVH Squat unsupervised, the guy avoid a bad injury only because of luck). No gather around before the warmup/WOD, WOD movement barely explained... Really disappointed, avoid at all cost. It's this kind of boxe that give bad publicity to Crossfit.
Fantastic experience: A great box with great coaches who help and push you to reach you potential. A positive, friendly environment to train in downtown Montreal.
