Negative experience: The YMCA Markham is terrible. We don't feel safe nor be treated respectfully. My husband was assaulted by another member, but the YMCA refused to investigate and not provide evidence to the police. We felt unfair. We purchased a family membership during covid time. My son loves playing table tennis, so my husband and my son go there almost every day during the summer break. We alway keep the rules while playing table tennis inside the table tennis room. On June 11, 2024 around 6pm, a old guy entered the table tennis room and wanted us to leave right away to vacant the spot, so he and his partner can play. My husband is a very soft guy and told him nicely that they just started 5 minutes ago, but the guy claimed that he had his name on the board and he should play NOW no matter what. My husband started to talk to the guy about why he should wait because every member can play maximum 30 minutes and take turns. Suddenly, the guy hit my husband using his fist and knocked my husband down on the ground. My husband passed out for minutes and my son called the police. After the police came, my husband stood up and the guy told police that my husband hit him first, but it was not true. My husband never touch the guy, we wanted the police to investigate what happened inside the table tennis room during that time, but YMCA refused to provide the video surveillance footage to the police. We saw there was at least one camera inside the table tennis room. Because we didn't have solid evidence to prove that the guy assaulted my husband first. So the police let the guy leave. I am so angry and upset not only because my husband was assaulted by another YMCA member inside the YMCA facility without doing anything wrong, but also YMCA refused to protect my husband by providing the video footage to the police to prove my husband was innocent. The truth will be revealed if the YMCA management can cooperate with the police, but they didn't. This place is poorly managed. They have no attention to investigate such violent crimes. They refuse to protect the vulnerable members. Now I cancelled my whole family membership because I don't feel safe to go there anymore. I could give 0 start instead of 1, nobody wants to goto this type of places feeling not treated fair and safe. Rhonda Tang

Positive experience: The YMCA is really busy. There is lots of kids in their programs. I would recommend coming to see if you like the programs and how they are run. The programs are more about a time pass, rather than building skill in the sports. But for the price you can’t ask for more. They have a great gym and a track for walking and running. Go ahead and check it out!

Fantastic experience: Honestly being going to this gym since I was 12 and I am now 24. I love the staff and have seen all the different types of people who worked there. I go in the mornings at 6-6:30 it is nice and not too busy. I love the front desk people at that time. I get to Yvonne in the mornings who always encourages me and asks about my mom who used to come early with me. She’s very kind! We also love seeing our evening family and staff such as Maria who my mom and I have had the fortune to befriend. Truly feels like a family with regulars

Negative experience: All the staff are incredibly nice, supportive and encouraging..except for a blonde lady named Andrea. She’s always rude, touched me without consent and super incompetent. Every time I see her- without a doubt she’s always giving attitude to people and speaks in a very condescending tone.

Fantastic experience: I love the Y in Markham! Great and friendly staff, good atmosphere and spacious and clean facilities. Had a nice treadmill workout and hit the machines too. Spent some time in the hot tub and steam room. Best place to workout, have some “me” time and self care! Love it!! ‍♀️‍♀️

Negative experience: *Warning about their Karate Program* If you are considering enrolling your kids in a karate program, I'd suggest you look elsewhere. The Karate program currently offered at the YMCA does NOT teach any actual karate, it's been 4 months since this particular program started and they still have not taught a single move; it also lacks all of the fundamental principles of karate such as form, discipline, and respect; there is none of that here. All they do is get the kids moving around with some random physical exercises so the program feels more like a summer day camp than a karate class. When asked why they haven't taught anything yet, the lead instructor said they are trying not to focus on the "testing material". I don't even know what that means but it shows because they have no curriculum, no standards, nothing. The lead instructor also couldn't answer simple questions about kata form, which explains a lot and makes me wonder if he is actually qualified to teach. These concerns were brought up with their "program management", but all we got was the "smile and nod" treatment, you can clearly tell that nothing was getting through nor taken seriously. But if you are skeptical, at least do yourself a favor and go spectate one of the classes first and see what you are getting your kids into before you enroll. UPDATE: Two days after this review went live, someone named Amy called, but only to ask that I remove the photos originally posted with the review. She made no attempt to discuss and/or address any of the concerns raised in the review. What a shame, it goes to show how little these people care.

Fantastic experience: We visited Markham YMCA this afternoon (Sunday). This was my husband's first visit there. I had a 7-day free pass about 8 years ago. We had a guided tour of the facilities. The staff Roshan was very patient and courteous. He answered all our queries and helped me to get the app and showed me how to use it. I was quite impressed about the women's locker room. The lockers looked quite new. The whole facility was not overcrowded. Parking was great. After the tour we signed up for the Family Plus membership and wouldn't wait to get our exercise routine started there. Markham YMCA has everything we are looking for. We would undoubtedly recommend it to people especially seniors like us who are considering joining this nice fitness center.

Negative experience: I registered the Jr. Lego Stop Motion Animation camp for my son in the summer of 2018. I can't believe that $390/week course was actually in the trailer!!! There is basically no air conditioning in it, and the child has been sweating. Throughout the week my child didn't learn anything about Lego stop motion. He told me because there is two kids no spots. The teacher is very irresponsible. The child only eats a little bit of lunch every day. The water sometimes only takes a sip. Under the scorching sun, the child was not instructed to wear a sunhat! I am very disappointed with this Camp. I will never register again.

Fantastic experience: Love the convenience of indoor track and programs for all ages. Parents can work out while kids have swim or dance , basketball lessons. Excellent economical price for family keeping in mind it includes Aquafit, yoga and dance gp sessions and so many more options. You can wear anything u r comfortable and walk at your pace..especially if senior or any disability.. great place to keep fit in winters too.

Negative experience: I came by today and the doors are locked. Yet it says they are open from 6am-9pm? Why is the door locked on a weekday? They need to change the hours posted on the door. Very annoyed

Fantastic experience: I'd like to thank Markham YMCA's Yvonne for her outstanding customer service skills, professionalism, warmth and kindness. I became a member recently at North York YMCA. Today I wanted to try Markham YMCA but forgot to bring my card. I was feeling anxious not knowing what might happen. At the customer service desk, Yvonne instantly put me at ease. After finding me on the system based on my phone number, she gave me a guided tour based on my needs, and helped me set up the YMCA application on my cellphone properly so I can register with their programs as well. Thank you so much, Yvonne and YMCA.

Negative experience: Messy pool was ok too many people coordinating this thing the kids don't learn a thing unless they are self motivated isn't the point to get every child to swim? I don't understand how this place works staff needs to work harder on the kids that aren't as good or brave

Paying for like 50 bucks for dump and trash services? Hell come on this place is DEFINITELY NOT RECOMMENDED TO ANYONE and I will NOT pay for next month’s membership ANYMORE ‼️‼️‼️‼️

Negative experience: Bought membership here but regretted it. Staff is limited. Staff were also easily distracted and I witnessed staff chatting in a "break room" when there was a shortage of staff. They didn't even try to help! Activities are fine, but most teenagers do not follow correct age limits, nor do they respect rules. It's a free for all for enjoyment. Staff didn't try to do anything. YMCA membership is overpriced, and I'd recommend going to a fitness center or rather a community center.

Positive experience: I wish this YMCA would do subsidized memberships for low-income people like other locations. Just became homeless last week and just wanted to find a place to shower so I could show up to work clean. Lost all my money and was willing to give my last 50$ left for a membership but they still wouldn't help me with a membership (costs $60+) so I went to the Bradley Center in Vaughn. Which may be almost 1h out of my way. But at least I can show up to work presentable. But to their credit they did let me take a 1 time only shower which I really needed. Just a shame how a charity would turn down someone in need.

Negative experience: Their programs are gear only to certain segments of the population. No inclusive at all. And Markham happens to be a very diverse community. And this is just post pandemics.

Negative experience: I will not recommend this location to anyone. All their staffs seems to be lazy and not motivated to work. I registered my boys for basketball classes here, but their coach doesn’t have any basketball skills. Not sure if he is a volunteer or staff.

Fantastic experience: Great place for almost anything. Came here for my daughter's classmates birthday party. They sectioned off the gym and set up a bouncy castle and mini bikes on the other side people played basketball and played badminton. There is a workout area upstairs along with a walking/running track, stretching area, weights and elliptical machines and stationary equipment. Staff were helpful and polite, had us in the right area for the party and everything was awesome. Well maintained and very clean, well lit so everyone can see the track and other equipment.
