Our comment from FitFit Canada about SFU Fitness Centre:
Welcome to SFU Fitness Centre, a well-equipped gym located in Burnaby, Canada, offering a range of facilities for fitness enthusiasts and SFU students. This center promotes a friendly and engaged atmosphere, bolstered by the approachable and knowledgeable staff, such as Dinesh at the front desk, who provides valuable workout tips and creates a welcoming environment.
The gym features a wide selection of equipment that caters to various workout regimes, making it suitable for multiple sports and fitness activities. It is particularly advantageous for students, as the cost is included in their tuition.
However, some users noted that the center can become crowded during peak hours, making it essential to plan visits accordingly. There are also mentions of the facilities being a bit outdated and concerns about cleanliness, particularly in the women's change rooms. Despite these drawbacks, many find the space offers enough for a solid workout.
Overall, while SFU Fitness Centre has areas for improvement, it remains a popular and valuable resource for students looking to stay fit and engage in various sporting activities.
SFU Fitness Centre: Opinions
Positive experience: Give us some stairmasters
Fantastic experience: The guy at the front desk (I think his name was Dinesh) was super knowledgeable and approachable. He made the atmosphere feel very welcoming and provided lots of pointers regarding a good workout routine, etc.
Positive experience: Nice gym just turn the ac one too hot
Fantastic experience: Exercise, breath, and engage in strength training in the same space in which fitness models have often trained to maintain healthy and vigorous bodies.
Negative experience: Gym equipment is ok considering the price you pay. However, most of the time it’s overly crowded. I hope they implement some kind of booking system or at least some indication of the crowd, which one can check online before visiting the gym.
Negative experience: Very old fasioned
Negative experience: would love to climb on the climbing wall one day but SFU doesn't want that apparently
Positive experience: This place is really nice the court and the stands but if its your 1st time there its actually like a maze I was 30 minutes late to my game
Fantastic experience: Nice gym for multiple sports
Positive experience: I got stopped by one of the staff here and was asked if I was a student at SFU. When I replied yes, they were like: "mmm, I don't think so".
Negative experience: Many old and broken equipments.
Positive experience: The variety of equipments are average but i guess compared to the quantity of the equipments and the space its good. Its neat.
Fantastic experience: Dont forget to pay for parking
Negative experience: I really like the selection of equipment. But that's about it. My biggest issue was the women's change rooms. They were dirty beyond belief. I understand dirty floors as people are coming in and out from outside but the showers had dirt everywhere. There was also no proper lighting in the shower area either, there were simply strings of construction lighting hanging up (not even all lit.) I am aware that they are doing construction on the pool however an area where we are showering & changing should be kept clean. The change rooms were an awful first impression as a new drop in member.
Fantastic experience: Excellent gym
Fantastic experience: I love it!
Fantastic experience: Preço justo, local aberto a comunidade
Positive experience: A little outdated building. But still nice.
Positive experience: Great facility!
Negative experience: No spectator seating
Fantastic experience: Great gym with a lot of equipment. Service better now that it's walk in and not a booking system anymore
Negative experience: Has SFU seen the locker rooms & the respective washrooms in this building? Especially the appalling swimming pool locker room. Thought I was using a washroom somewhere in DTES. I wonder where all this international student tuition money goes to
Positive experience: Doesn't have super brand new and nice equipment but it has everything you need for a good workout. You probably have to work into people's sets though as it gets a little crowded and cluttered in the mid-afternoon. I recommend going in the morning!
Positive experience: Not clean at all
Fantastic experience: Good facility, great equipment variety. Well maintained.
Fantastic experience: school gym?
Fantastic experience: Great gym!! awesome people and can take growth mindset nicely!!
Fantastic experience: Great watching my niece play basketball there and remembering the good times playing mimi basketball there, back in my day. Thank you and RIP Mr. Carkner
Positive experience: Went to watch our grandson play in a basketball tournament. Very hard place to find. Signage is nonexistent as far as I could see. Asked a very nice lady who was out for a walk and she gave us directions.
Positive experience: Pretty crowded most of the time, reserve your spots (because of Covid)
Positive experience: Location was good , but the gym is always crowded.
Positive experience: Wonderful staff!!
Negative experience: Pros: It's "free" (covered in tuition) for SFU students. Cons: Dirty, crowded, and old, rusty equipment in disrepair. Also a lack of basic equipment like accessible bumper plates or powerlifting plates. You often have to wait a long time to use popular benches (like the two adjustable benches) and other equipment.
Fantastic experience: Good gym, lots of equipment. Limited hours during Covid.
Negative experience: No one ever answers the phone at this place. Been trying to call them and ask questions about membership for weeks, and every single time I get the automated answering!
Fantastic experience: Parking is a little tricky and expensive...facilities are great
Fantastic experience: HUGEEEE
Positive experience: This is a pretty good gym. It’s big with 2 floors. They have women’s hours which is nice. Plenty of equipment to get a good workout in. Can get quite busy however during peak times would recommend going in the morning hours.
Positive experience: Great place to do sporting activities. I was there when our friends' doughter had competition in basketball. Nothing was wrong.
Negative experience: Old facility, but it has Starbucks and Tim Hortons nearby.
Positive experience: A decent-sized gym with plenty of equipment. It is fairly busy during the midday, but pretty chill in the evenings.
Positive experience: Gym to keep you fit & healthy
Fantastic experience: HUGEEEE
Fantastic experience: Good gym
Fantastic experience: Wide variety, organized and nice environment in general!
Fantastic experience: Great staff at the climbing wall!
Fantastic experience: 좋아여
Positive experience: helps alot to stay fit.
Positive experience: Good gym, but kind of small
Positive experience: Overcrowded, no empty lockers but equipment ok
Negative experience: Right after the pool got fungus on my legs, thank you. Was is sauna? was it really old not in good condition changeroom? was it condition of water? I don't care, but please people, don't go there. But you know..be forced to pay for rec.
Positive experience: Wide range of equipments, friendly environment.
Negative experience: Dirty and pathetic
Positive experience: Lots of barbells and free weights. Helpful and friendly staff, great group of regulars. Equipment is aging, however, and the music is hit or miss.
Positive experience: Bit outdated, but gets the job done
Positive experience: As far as university gyms go, this one is huge! Great selection of equipment and the staff are super friendly. It's a nice place to get away for a brain break and it's just one of the many amazing amenities offered by the school. Students don't realize it's free to use so take advantage of it!
Fantastic experience: Great gains
Fantastic experience: Friendly helpful staff, great gym
Fantastic experience: Great selection of equipment. I enjoy going there during the women's-only hours on Saturday mornings.
Negative experience: 2021 fall: I got kicked out for wearing jeans, apparently it damages the equipment. Only my hands had touch equipment that day, I was doing pull up's and the pulley cable machine. I've worn jeans to the gym for years, especially after my causal off 2018: ive used it a few times in my 2 semesters at SFU. By no means am I happy being forced to pay for this. if i used it, i'd still be unhappy given its hot, stinky and full at ideal times. ive got a much better gym in my apartment building. all students a being forced to pay for a serves "few" (by percent of total students) use, not to mention the terrible condition.
Positive experience: This center is a bit old but ok to use. The soccer fileld is great. Also there are 4 tennis courts in front of the center next to the field.
Positive experience: 아이들이 유도를 저렴하게 배울수있어서 좋아요. 너무 재미있게 가르쳐서 좋아요. 샘들이 친절한건 덤이요
Negative experience: For a university gym you would expect that their would be proper ventilation and air conditioning in this day and age. Annoying patrons as well.
Positive experience: Cool
Negative experience: Too much of people
Positive experience: busy at night, but quite well that it open in the morning.
Fantastic experience: Great selection of equipment. I enjoy going there during the women's-only hours on Saturday mornings.
Negative experience: This gym has extremely poor ventilation which is disappointing for a university gym. It's very difficult to work out due to the stagnant, hot air. This gym has great potential otherwise.
Fantastic experience: They have almost everything here. Good enough for me.
Fantastic experience: has everything you need, much like community center gyms and its free for all SFU students.
Positive experience: Been going 4 times a week for the past 2 years. The gym is a bit small for the size of the university. It gets the job done.
Negative experience: Well well well, first let me claim that for your tuition you paid each term, students are FORCED to pay CAD 90 per term ( 3 months ), if you don't believe it, go check ur tuition inquiry, even though you do not use it at all, school still force you to pay it unless you show your arm is cut off.... Second, this gym locates at the basement, and POOR VENTILATION SYSTEM.... Imagine a group of long haired males, sweating sweating, and probably after just few minutes the entire room gonna be filled with those disgusting smell.... I mean it is just not comparable to UBC, imagine there are roughly 20000+ students here at SFU, each of us paid for sure, 90CAD Per term, and just calculate that in your brain how much money did this place ditch you just by this small shifty gym? Is just rip off rip off, again, culture of SFU
Positive experience: Nice new facilities. Working out while watching SFU Football games makes for a good day.
Positive experience: The swimming pool here is pretty good. There change rooms are not as good. The filth there is just disgusting. Some of the showers are weak compared to the others.
