Our comment from FitFit Canada about YMCA of Oakville:

The YMCA of Oakville is a beloved fitness center that fosters a warm and welcoming community atmosphere. Many members consider it their second home, noting the friendly and supportive staff that create a family-like environment. The facility is well-maintained and offers a variety of activities suitable for all ages, including fitness classes, swimming lessons, and specialized programs for children.

Some highlights include:

  • Community Vibe: Many visitors appreciate the sense of belonging and camaraderie among members.
  • Cleanliness: The facility is consistently praised for its cleanliness and well-maintained equipment.
  • Dedicated Staff: Several personal trainers, such as Momoko and Ivan, have received high recommendations for their professionalism and ability to motivate clients.
  • Variety of Programs: The YMCA offers diverse activities catering to different fitness levels and age groups.

However, some users have expressed frustrations regarding:

  • Customer Service: There have been reports of unhelpful or rude behavior from certain staff members, particularly at the front desk.
  • Policy Changes: Recent changes to programs and policies, especially in sports offerings, have disappointed some long-time members.
  • Management Issues: Concerns about transparency and responsiveness from the administration have also been noted.

Overall, while there are areas for improvement, the YMCA of Oakville remains a popular spot for families and individuals seeking a supportive environment for their fitness journey.

Negative experience: This is simply horrific. My peers and I have enjoyed the "fun and games" program for quite a while, so it came as a shock to us all when the sports, which are the only reason I still have a membership, were removed. Although there are other activities that I find enjoyable, this was my primary reason for maintaining my membership. Aside from that, it's a pretty decent place, deserving around 4.5 stars. Without the sports, I’m considering ending my membership, as I don’t think I will be going anymore. I also find the reason for the change quite unfair; it all happened because a couple of kids felt left out, which isn’t fair to the rest of us. Thank you.

JadXV 1 year ago

Negative experience: Imagine this: many kids, including myself, being completely neglected and not allowed to participate in sports during a “fun and games” program, all because a few younger children “felt left out.” This wasn’t a balanced approach where both sports and non-sports activities were considered. Instead, they eliminated sports entirely for a month, prioritizing the younger children while testing out this new “no sports” policy. The situation was handled poorly, without any consideration for the older children. The staff were also very rude when explaining the decision. After hearing this, I immediately canceled my membership. This is how the YMCA of Oakville is managing things, and it’s incredibly disappointing. Many participants, including myself, are now reconsidering whether to continue under these new terms. When I voiced my concerns, I was told that other sports programs were available, but those options are either infrequent or inconvenient. Furthermore, anyone under the age of 10 is excluded from those alternatives.

Fantastic experience: I've had a fantastic experience with Momoko, the specialist. She is both professional and friendly, making each session enjoyable. After 10 sessions, her encouragement has led to significant improvement. I highly recommend her!

Negative experience: Disorganized place, trying to book the birthday party facilities and can’t reach the responsible person. No answers to e-mails, no call back, doesn’t pick up the phone calls. Front desk can only check the availability, but even if it’s available they can’t book it. The person responsible for birthday parties is ignoring the requests to reach back so probably needs some help with time management or appropriate customer service training.

Negative experience: My daughter signed up for a swimming class and she was very excited. My daughter has autism and she really loves the water. The trainer made her hate the water because of his behavior. I hope they put people with experience with them. We only need encouragement and a smile with them. Is this difficult!!! I pay $70 for my daughter to be happy for just 45 minutes or $30 just to make her happy, while he trains her nervously, with a frowning face and a sharp tone... There are many children who need encouragement and we need to smile at them to encourage them, not to break their hearts. They should take rehabilitation courses on how to deal with children. He did not know that I was paying attention to my daughter. He tells her to move her legs and gets angry and complains!!! If she knew how to swim, would I take her on a course? When I remember this, it is a terrible thing.

Negative experience: They never answer their phone. I left a voicemail requesting a callback. When the staff finally called me, they rudely demanded to know the reason for my call to the YMCA. They told me to call back and leave a detailed voicemail about my purpose for calling. If this is how they treat callers, the person responsible should be fired immediately.

Fantastic experience: I started working with Momoko at the YMCA Oakville at the beginning of April, and in just six weeks, the results have been incredible! Through hard work, dedication, and Momoko's expert guidance, I've lost 10lbs. I feel healthier, look healthier, and even my friends and family are noticing the positive changes. Momoko's personalized approach and motivational style make every session enjoyable and effective. If you're looking for a knowledgeable and supportive personal trainer, I highly recommend Momoko! Thank you for helping me on this amazing journey to better health!

Fantastic experience: After 25+ years of inactivity I started personal training at age 60. I have been working weekly for the past 10 months with Momoko at the Y. Her assessment, knowledge, building of my training plan, motivation and enthusiasm has been awesome! I have remained injury free and made much more progress than I ever anticipated! I would highly recommend Momoko and training programs at the Y to work towards a healthier version of yourself.

Negative experience: I am such a big fan of YMCA and have been a member and ambassador for decades. That said, when I visit Oakville, it’s always a hassle. I have never been welcomed. Rather, “who are you?, where are you from?, what kind of member?, you can only come twice a week to this Y”. May 09 I had popped in early to enjoy the facilities and was met by Siomata (sp?). I used to be a resident and member of the Oakville Y and as a guest in recent years, have been entered into their system many times. However, today it is again a problem. Other Y’s I have visited code my card so I can enter quickly and easily. Here, it is a very controlled process. The staff say there is a new system so why is it so hard to enter. I was told today they would be calling my home Y to verify my membership.I have a coded card with my picture on it. Really? Finally, I was given a card but it did not work. I returned it and left without a workout. I just feel so unwelcome! It’s such a great facility but I never want to go back. I am sorry to say I cannot recommend this Y at all. Especially if you are a Visitor. London Center (my home club), Brantford and Rymal Rd Hamilton are all amazing and I would highly recommend any of these locations if you are traveling as I so often am.

Fantastic experience: I had my first personal training session with Momoko today. She is FANTASTIC! I've had personal training in the past and this session far exceeded my expectations and my past experience. I have back issues, but I'm feeling confident that with her program and guidance that I'll be better equipped to ward off injury.

Negative experience: The kids working at the front desk are less than brainless. They should not be hired anywhere. They gave us a day pass to go to the pool and after we took our showers we discovered the pool is closed. They are either the most idiots in the world, or playing with people to have a laugh for which they should be fired if there is still any kind of decent management at the YMCA.

Fantastic experience: My husband and I have been personally trained by Ivan for the last 4 months. Ivan is a very knowledgeable trainer. We are very happy with his work and we just signed up for another 2 months. We are focused on our health and longevity and his help has been very much appreciated.

Christie McCutcheon 1 year ago

Negative experience: The children working at the front desk and at the pool are all incredibly rude. They all need a serious attitude adjustment and should really be taught how to talk to people. You work at the ymca people, you have no right to act like snobs.

Negative experience: Ymca Oakville On Saturday November 18 2023, at the Ymca in Oakville on 410 Rebecca Street. I experienced the worst case of racism in my life. I was called a “security threat” and “safety concern” by a short Caucasian woman with curly hair by the name of Anne Marie. My son was playing at the newly built jungle gym, and I was sitting on the bench with my headphones on listening to music as he played by himself for approximately 2-5 minutes. Two children come into the jungle gym and started to play with my four-year-old son. One of the children had a potty accident on themselves and left the jungle gym the other child followed. My son, was playing by himself alone in the jungle gym once again. Shortly after Anne Marie walks in calls for my attention and says “Excuse me not to be rude but you need to leave, there is a birthday party that booked this room, so if you want to come back when there done you can”. My response was “why do I need to leave it’s a playroom, there’s nothing wrong with my son being there room. There’s nothing stopping the rest of the children from playing?”. Anne Marie’s immediate response was “because you’re a security threat and a safety concern none of the parents know you and I work here and you don’t and I’m telling you, you need to leave or else I can go get my manager”. I simply said “go get your manager”. The best part about this entire scenario is that my son was playing on the jungle gym, while the birthday party started to head inside the play room. The children from the birthday party and my son we’re continuing to play like kids. Then proceeded two young men, walk in to the playroom. The first young man said calmly “excuse me, but I’m going have to ask you to leave because of birthday party had booked this room”. My response was “ok not that I’m a security threat or a safety concern because that’s what the other employee” said. The other Ymca male employee’s response was “yeah actually it is a safety concern”. He begins to explain why am a safety concern and a security threat to the birthday party. As I was going back and forth with the YMCA employee on how I’m a security threat, and a safety concern the entire time, my four-year-old son, and the birthday party children who came into the jungle gym we’re playing. So finally, I agreed to leave I stopped, and I said “you know what you do me the honour of calling my four-year-old son and taking him off the jungle gym and explaining to him why he’s a security threat, and the safety concern to the other children. The two young men called to my son and told him a four-year-old that he needs to leave. My four-year-old son started hysterically, crying and didn’t understand why he needed to stop playing with the other children. I then looked at the YMCA employees. The two young men and I told them “They should be ashamed of themselves”. Then the male Ymca employee said “I’m not ashamed of myself. You guys are a safety concern to this birthday party and you need to leave. This is not the time or place”. Calling an African American woman with a child, a security threat, and a safety concern is typical targeted racist terminology to describe Black people.

Fantastic experience: A great space for all members of the family. An excellent aquatics program where my children attended lessons and continued with swim leadership certifications. The facility has a well staffed fitness area with a variety of resistance training and cardio equipment, free weights and numerous fitness classes. A very clean and bright space with very friendly and helpful staff. Weekend hours have been extended to accommodate members staying later on Saturdays and holidays.

Hitendra Patel 2 years ago

Negative experience: It’s probably the worst community places I have ever been. My daughter went for swimming lessons for 2 years, and frequent change of instructor, no learning plan, feedback. No accountability whatsoever for the place. On top of that the customer service desk showed attitude even if their administration is at fault for not informing for cancelled class, closed pool etc. how can you expect praise without really doing anything good - having a nice building is only aspect of it. I think I just had enough so cancelled everything. Even if it means paying bit more to someone who knows what they are doing… thanks YMCA for giving away business.

Dia ibrahim 2 years ago

Negative experience: I had a very bad expériences with their swimming lessons. My kids who were able to swim before coming, forgot how to do so while going to ymca. My youngest coach used to through him balls in the water and ask him to pick them.up even though my youngest is a swimmer, at least used to be.

Negative experience: Its unfortunate but the Management at the YMCA has really let the membership down. For months I've been hearing that they are gettting back to pre-covid hours. Still reduced hours at the Y. Covid ended folks. No more early morning workouts, they're more concerned with profits then members. If your looking for a gym that truly has their membership in mind, go elsewhere. The plus membership is also one of the most expensive in Halton.

Negative experience: Poorly designed website. Spent 20m navigating and still couldnt figure out if there is a gym, the amenities or the rates. its just programs programs programs. After finally getting ahold of someone. 22$...... extra just for hottub and sauna use. Someone needs to go back to buisness school. Unless you enjoy being scammed avoid this place. Pool and pool amenities are suppose to be included as one. Never seen any facility so poorly managed.

Russell Brechin 2 years ago

Positive experience: I like this gym facility. The staff is friendly and gym is clean. They have lots of free weights and nice exercise machines. My only negative comment is that in the men's plus change room, the locker area is less than 160 square feet. It can get crowded when 6 or 7 people are changing at one time. They should consider building a bigger new plus change room since these members are paying a higher monthly gym fee and deserve a better bigger change room.

Positive experience: I'd love to give them 5 stars because the facilities are amazing! Clean, well maintained. But customer service is really lacking when you need any program- specific support, and front desk is not trained to answer questions beyond membership and hours. Via website, you can find the contact info of the department you need to reach, but it will always go to the answering machine, and you're lucky if it's not full. E-mailing them is also a hit or miss, they may or not reply. Registration to their swimming program could use some re-structuring as everything is centralized with one person (Nadya) who happens to not be very accessible or friendly. This person needs to give your account access to visualizing the swimming programs available for your profile and open for you to register at that timeslot. Unfortunately you can't register online, or make modifications to your account online (such as change the swimming class day or time). We also found an error on the YMCA program schedule, which hasn't been corrected and front desk wasn't able to confirm the schedule info until we showed up at the scheduled time and instructor was not there, so front desk reached out to program responsible to confirm it was not posted correctly. In summary: great facility and great potential, but very poor execution. The community needs this kind of program, it would be amazing if service could be improved.

Positive experience: This is a modern facility with nicer equipment than other locations however in another way it didn't feel as welcoming as other Ys I've visited. Being that I also use another gym company I've used my key fob at several locations without issue. At this location they request photo ID which I haven't experienced at other locations. Then when you enter the actual gym on the upper level you have to scan in again which feels redundant and pointless as you've already entered the facility and likely locked away your card in your locker. The change rooms were clean and were being cleaned while I was there. I may consider visiting this location in the future but the jury is out.

Unfortunately after covid things changed... prices have been hiked up and each programme is not cost effective anymore. The YMCA was our family oasis... now we just drive by.

Nicholas DeCoulos 3 years ago

Negative experience: I was so happy when I heard that the YMCA was starting to operate again. Imagine my disappointment when I noticed that because of a crisis, they have jacked up the prices in order to compensate the time and money lost. Dear YMCA officials, you are not the only ones who lost money! You have proven that you are only trying to use the rules of "supply and demand" when you were once known as a family friendly organization. For this reason I can only send one out of four family members to your programs and have appointed the rest of my family to other gyms. After looking at your present family programs, gone are the days that they made sense.I am only looking for what you were best known for when we were members for 4 years using all of your facilities at family friendly prices.

Negative experience: I used to love this gym until the experience that I had at the front desk with a Hispanic woman working there today. She was condescending, rude, brash and having an immature power trip. Apparently the price for the month to month membership when up by $20. She failed to explain that to me correctly. Most of the people at that desk aren’t on the same page with that Membership program. I was telling her how I used to pay $111 every month for the past 3 years whenever I’m in Oakville and not travelling. She would yell a hard NO over and over while shaking her head like as if I was in grade school being yelled at by a nasty disgruntled teacher having a power trip. I told her I could show her my receipts to prove it and she still told me that I was wrong. Finally I said fine let’s just do it on debit then. She then was refusing to allow me to pay debit which I’ve always done. She also said I would only get the membership until the end of the month which is not true it’s 30 days. When another woman at the desk allowed me to pay with debit the price when up another $10 to $132. Even though that’s a little steep for a ymca gym membership I was ready to pay it. However the way this nasty Hispanic woman was speaking to me it just didn’t feel right to Go through with it because then it would have made it ok for her to talk to people like that and that wasn’t ok so I said forget it. I was fired up but still calm on the outside. I grabbed my stuff and left. To make matters worse she held onto my drivers license and wouldn’t give it back to me like a child would do unless I paid her $15 for a day pass. They had problems with their system when I tried paying when I arrived and they told me to go in and we’ll solve it later when they were less busy so that’s on them. I told her that she needs to give me back my property otherwise she would have big problems. It was getting heated and no surrounding staff would support her so she finally gave me back my drivers license. She behaved like a complete immature 12 year old. As I was leaving she was yelling at me. I was so fired up I was ready to physically defend myself if any of them put their hands on me while walking out of there. What business or company treats their customers like that? She needs a lesson on customer service and addressing customers in a respectable fashion.

Teachers don't do anything to prevent and stop this bully behavior. I worry to make sure my kid doesn't become target for this kind of kids behavior..since he is the most friendly, bright and intelligent kid in his class. Very upset by the kids crowd and stuff unprofessionalism out there.

Negative experience: Facilities: The facilities are great but not maintained well e.g. I regularly spend abt 5mins or so hopping from one treadmill to another to find that actually works. Staff: THIS is their biggest issue. The staff has an apathetic and rude attitude towards patrons. They clearly take their patrons for granted. If you make the mistake of asking a question to the front desk staff, they make it clear that you interupted their gossip session. Classes: Variety of classes mostly geared towards seniors. The main issue is that trainers are prone to being tardy or not showing up at all without notice. This can be a huge inconvenience if you've planned your day accordingly and drive all the way down for a class. Cost: Costs about $90 for two people, which is affordable but not a great deal like some of the other gyms. Verdict: Staff needs a bit of a wake up call from management, which brings down the whole experience.
