Overall, East Peak Climbing is highly recommended for both seasoned climbers and beginners looking for a fun and engaging gym to climb in Halifax!
East Peak Climbing: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Love this climbing gym !
Fantastic experience: One of the best spots in the city for climbing. However I wish they had more staff to Belay.
Fantastic experience: Awesome time climbing here! Staff very friendly and eager to show me the ropes (no pun intended haha). Had a great time, get a few climbs in then relax then get back it. Five stars
Negative experience: This is sadly one of the worst climbing gyms I've been to. I went in wanting to do a quick 30 min bouldering session while I was on holidays in Halifax. The bouldering area is tiny and there's maybe only 2 climbs per grade. The crash pad is also very thin and I do not believe it would adequately break an uncontrolled fall from the top. I was very concerned that I would hurt myself throughout my brief session. The setting was incredibly odd. I've climbed across Canada, the US, the UK, and the EU and I've never experienced setting quite like it. I really did not like it. It seems that I wasn't the only one who thought this as I was the only one bouldering (minus some kids playing in the area) despite the gym being packed. They did not provide rental chalk so I had to spend an extra $10 buying a chalk ball. Minus liquid chalk only gyms in France, this is the only gym I've been to in the world that does not provide rental chalk. I had to wait over 30 min to recieve an orientation. Being an experienced climber, I ended up just giving up and climbing myself after waiting 20 min. I originally only wanted to stay for 30 min so this was incredibly frustrating. Good thing I did as it took almost 40 min for the orientation to start. Overall, I was not impressed. If you are looking for a quick bouldering session while visiting Halifax, please steer clear from this gym.
Fantastic experience: Great gym and staff
Fantastic experience: It was a nice and fun day! My kids enjoyed being there. Very friendly and kind staff Especially Ms. Parvin, who helped a lot Highly Recommend!
Positive experience: A very nice gym with some cool setting. But sadly not a great first experience here. We paid for our pass, and the person at the front desk said to find a staff member in the gym and do our toprope belay test. We are all experienced so figured this would be quick and hassle free. But then, once we got into the gym, the person in there told us they were understaffed and had a group, so we could not do our test and would have to stick only to the auto belay climbs. This might have been fine if it weren't for the fact 80% of the gym is not auto belay, and the group was all kids using the 4-5 auto belays... Luckily, the person at the front desk saved our experience as they were kind enough to leave their post to quickly do our test after I went back out and asked. That was very, very much appreciated! After that we had a great time. But I would suggest that if there isn't any staff member willing/able to do a test at a given time in the gym, then climbers should be told that at the front before paying full price for a very reduced number of climbs. Or, the person in the gym should ask the staff member out front to come help... not leave it to us to say something. We likely just caught them on a busy day, but the situation made for a stressful first experience for us. Despite that, I would definitely come back! Lots of cool climbs to choose from to suit all skill levels, and worth a visit if you're in the area.
Fantastic experience: Great staff! A small but fun bouldering area, a nice mix of auto belay, top rope belay and lead climbing.
Fantastic experience: It was fun all the rental gears were in good condition. This was our first time so we attended an orientation which was helpful. Will recommend this location
Fantastic experience: Da best rope climbing gym :)
Fantastic experience: Very Friendly and accommodating staff. My kids enjoyed being there. They have a nice offer for 10 days. Worth trying it.
Fantastic experience: Visited this place today. Everything was great. The staff was very friendly, there were many diverse climbing routes. The equipment is in good condition. The only thing I would like is more automatic safety ropes. Otherwise, everything is just superb! Thank you very much.
Fantastic experience: Best place to climb in Halifax! ❤️❤️❤️
Fantastic experience: Great expérience, modest pricing, staff was great and passionate
Fantastic experience: A good time and fun day out! We were first timers and the orientation was great. Staff was kind and our fellow climbers were very helpful. Very kid friendly and the day pass means you come back again and again if you’re going to be in the city for a while. Would recommend!
Fantastic experience: Had a wonderful time here with our family. Great staff and great facility.
Fantastic experience: Come here regularly. Very good place. Clean, friendly, helpful. Not the cheapest place to buy things, but that’s not really surprising.
Fantastic experience: East Peak rules. Great variety of routes for all skill levels. Awesome staff. Routes are changed up often to keep things fresh.
Fantastic experience: Nice place for children
Fantastic experience: Neat spot, well run.
Fantastic experience: Amazing spot. Friendly staff. Love it.
Fantastic experience: Best place to get tied up indoors!
Fantastic experience: EAST PEAK BABEY!! great staff, great climbs!
Fantastic experience: Love this place. Pricing is a little steep though for punch cards as a family
Fantastic experience: Great spot for a climb and the gym/work out space upstairs in phenomenal!
Fantastic experience: Super helpful and friendly staff in a good sized climbing gym. Lots of top rope but also a dense bouldering wall. Try it out!
Fantastic experience: Great small, community oriented climbing gym. Top rope and bouldering. A lot of fun!
Fantastic experience: It's a great facility, with quality equipment, and staff that know what they're doing!
Fantastic experience: Great place for kids learning to climb and very friendly staff.
Fantastic experience: Awesome indoor climbing wall! And friendly helpful staff!
Fantastic experience: A lot of fun, been a while since I had been climbing, can't wait to go back
Fantastic experience: A great place to climb. The routes are fun and well thought out. The grades are spot on! Keep up the great work. We will see you again very soon.
Fantastic experience: Had a great time. The staff were friendly and patient on a very busy night. I took my five year old and everyone was welcoming and supportive.
Fantastic experience: Lead, Top Rope, Auto Belays, Small Boulder wall. Can challenge for lead/top rope certifications, don't need their course. Lead test consists of showing and explaining the dangers of back clipping, z clipping, how to catch a lighter/heavier/same weight climber and considerations for near/far from deck belay technique. Then an announced fall, unannounced fall, and clip the top and lower. Retie knot after every fall. Grigri required for test. Top rope test consists of how to tie a figure 8 with safety and how you know its tied properly. Grigri or atc for this one. Same falls and lower. Good luck!
Fantastic experience: Really kid friendly and excellent staff. Been there two times. Once it was very quiet and the other time it was busy and each was a quality experience. The rentals for harnesses and shoes are convinient and they apparently also have birthday parties.
Fantastic experience: Signed up for the 4 week intro climbing workshop with a few friends and so far it’s exceeded expectations. Ali is a great teacher, facilities are amazing with lots of well marked routes/bouldering wall/top rope/comp routes/auto belays etc, and overall it seems like a very busy and popular spot (without feeling crowded).
Fantastic experience: When I arrived here, there were a lot of people, so I couldn't take a picture. When I went there, college students were working hard to climb the rock wall. The atmosphere was filled with the passion of the learning student and the teacher. The space wasn't that big, but there was enough space between people.
Fantastic experience: Thank you for giving us the opportunity to try something fun and new as we were evacuated during the wildfire in Hammonds Plains. My kids 8 and 10 really enjoyed their experience and are looking forward to coming back. The staff were really helpful and friendly, great instructor. The facility was clean, fun and well laid out.
Fantastic experience: What an impressive experience, worth every penny! Helpful and organized staff, friendly, courteous, and encouraging members, a variety of climbing options, and a unique space with eclectic details. Took my 10 yo daughter and 3 of her friends as a birthday experience. Paid the regular (and very reasonable) Day Pass rate, gear rental for each, plus the extra to have a staff member one on one for the hour to guide/belay for them. Well worth it, especially if you happen to get IVAN! Obviously meant to work with others, he is a natural teacher and enthusiastic encourager. His interaction and positivity was authentic, his directions clear, and instructions knowledgeable (not that I have any clue really, but you could tell!). Ivan’s personality and style helped the girls’ confidence shine and their courage explode! Absolutely perfect for rock climbing! They had an incredible time, didn’t want to leave, and will most certainly will be back!
Fantastic experience: An amazing experience! The staff here are so friendly and very thorough with explaining the proper/safe way to climb. Worth every single penny (very affordable) especially considering it's an entire day pass, so you can stay as long as you want. We will DEFINITELY be back
Fantastic experience: Incredible experience! My daughter loves it and I’m getting hooked as well (pun intended). Parvin is the kindest person you’ll ever meet. Her energy and passion for helping others is remarkable.
Fantastic experience: First EAST PEAK IS AMAZING! However this review is more for feedback purposes. As the app is not accurate for how many people are climbing, when calling to find out if it's worth paying bus cost and sitting on 2 busses for an hour, to be told it's average....is not cool. Having the staff go into a little more detail would be great. The last few times I've called and got Leia, she has said it's average, so we turn up and sit waiting to climb for hours (the gym is so packed you can't move) and then don't get on a route. Then I've overheard multiple membership holders (as I am) complaining about staff letting non-members in during member hours...why pay for a membership then? This is not a bashing review as East Peak is absolutely amazing and deserve an award for being fantastic, but the above things I do think need some consideration.
Hi there, Thanks so much for this feedback! The ap is a brand new tool for us and a bit of a learning curve for our team. The counter is directly related to the number of people who check in but for it to be 100% accurate each person would also need to check out when they leave which doesn't always happen so it is hard to guarantee the accuracy of this tool. I apologize you were given the wrong information on this, we will be sure to get the accurate information to the team! Climbing times and crowding from January-April are tricky and we appreciate your patience! Here is some additional information that may help you plan your visits. Our peek times are 5pm-8pm Monday- Thursday or any time before 4pm on a weekend these are the most convenient times to climb for most people, members and non members alike, so some waiting can be expected during these times. If you don't like waiting we would recommend trying to climb outside these times if at all possible.I hope this information helps, if you have any more questions or feedback don't hesitate to email [email protected]
Fantastic experience: Great top rope climbing gym with really kind staff! Mac was kind, patient, and personable to my girlfriend and I and we felt very welcomed by not only him but the rest of the staff.
Fantastic experience: My first time climbing with East Peak was a wonderful and fun experience thanks to their amazing staff and my climbing guru, Annabelle. Mac's training was first rate, with lots of responsible positive reinforcement along the way. They want you to succeed and progress at your at your own level and feel proud of each achievement. On my first try, I got about a foot off the ground and thought that was it. On my third try... made it right to the top. Fist bumps all around. Climbing is a super activity for all ages.
Positive experience: Very fun. A little costly, but the fact that you can stay for hours or even leave and come back makes it completely worth it! My son is HOOKED. Staff are super friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. They're gonna be seeing a lot more of us! Edit: My only complaint is their lack of autobalayers and spare balayers. Having been here a bunch of times now, it's starting to get boring a lot faster when they're confined to literally just a couple walls, which really sucks.
Fantastic experience: People in there are so nice! Love there
Fantastic experience: Very helpful and friendly staff.
Fantastic experience: Had a great time. Can Boulder, climb, they have auto repel. Super fun.
Positive experience: Great space, staff and community. The routes change at a reasonable rate. Staff are helpful at a level appropriate for one's skill level. The fitness area is basic but high quality and very usable. Safety is a huge priority along with cleanliness and inclusiveness. Plus the area has plenty of great spots to cool down with a drink and/or meal afterward.
Fantastic experience: Very friendly staff. My son was there for a birthday party. And although he didn't love it due to a fear of heights it was still an awesome place to be. Staff were bright, happy and willing to jump in and help out.
Negative experience: Extremely disappointed, called in advance to book a available time slot and was told that the reason they do bookings was to prevent overcrowding. The moment I walked in the door I was surprised to see large group of 15-20 people which was fine until I had paid and got situated, and was informed by a employee that I was restricted to two walls and wasn’t aloud to climb the larger walls because the birthday party were there priories and we unable to spot someone that wasn’t in the party on the larger walls. This was very upsetting and made me feel like my money wasn’t valued the same as the group. Luckily the lady at the front desk was understanding and offered to put a credit on my account to cover the equipment rental the next time I was in
Fantastic experience: Great gym if you're into toprope climbing. The bouldering wall is tiny with just a few problems. I don't top rope or auto-belay but they had tall fun walls for all levels. My mum never climbed at a gym before and she thoroughly enjoyed toprope/auto-belay. For what it's worth, she's 50 and 5'2". If your mum is that size, then let her try! Staff is great, and the rental shoes are nice. There are also movie theatres seats for you to sit down in and watch people climb!
Fantastic experience: Had an awesome time here. Not from Halifax but my son loves climbing so we thought we'd take him here while in town. The staff were absolutely amazing with him. Showing him how to use the different features of the climbing gym safely. Next time we are in Halifax we will definitely be back.
Fantastic experience: Safe and friendly environment with well trained and helpful staff
Fantastic experience: I love this place. The staff are great.
Fantastic experience: The guy in the blue jersey today went way beyond his work discription. If I could give him more than a 5 star I would he was ver accomadating, use excellent time management skills and is amazimg with children and adults.
Fantastic experience: ***Warning: lengthly but descriptive and happy review*** Safety: East Peak Climbing follows safety protocols for covid-19 very well. I also felt/feel extremely safe climbing at this location, not only physically but emotionally. I think that I (was/am) emotionally safe at EPC is because I never felt judged once for my climbing abilities. I felt confident and encouraged! I think that we need to be "planted" in safe, supportive and solid "soil" to "grow." The "soil" data I collected from my experiences at EPC is that they possess some great "soil enhancer" which permits you, like a flower, to "grow" and "blossom" into the climber that you want to be. Thus, they give you the "tools" to flourish as a climber and a team player. A safe and healthy learning environment is what EPC provided me. I am thankful for their hard work in regards to safety - (with or without the COVID-19 virus being present in today's reality ) Prices: A little expensive but climbing is not a cheap sport! However, awesome intro deals and affordable climbing gear(s) are for sale in the entry. I also really loved and appreciated their sidewalk sale last year as well! Amazing deals, free hotdogs, and even various types of artwork for sale -- East Peak climbing knows how to make everyone feel "included" in and out of the gym. Personal Opinion: The owner(s) does what (they/she/he, etc.) can make this sport affordable. Thus, East Peak climbing is "gear" to "serve" the customers, the climbing community, and the general public. This "opinionated fact" was demonstrated during the pandemic last year. East Peak Climbing held Instagram and Facebook events. It teamed up with numerous climbing gurus and health professionals (Ex: Alison from Scotia Physio) to provide not only "their" community but "all" communities support and entertainment during a very challenging time in human history (emotionally, physically, spiritually, and financially) Not only that, but they continuously held sales on excellent gears, cute and colorful clothing and climbing accessories throughout this time frame (and presently). Sales during a pandemic are not only thoughtful but courageous, as they were only open for a few weeks before the pandemic went wild! Sometimes we need to put ourselves in other people's climbing shoes to "see" what "mountain" or "wall" that they're "climbing." I feel that EPC is climbing very thoughtful wall(s) -- or mountain(s). Staff: Knowledgeable, professional, and caring staff. Amazing little lessons during your climb sessions if you are in need. We all need to feel safe to learn, and at East Peak Climbing, you are safe. Closing remarks and future participation: Although I'm currently living in Antigonish, I can't wait to go climbing here again the next time I'm in `the fax. Oh, and fun! This place is so fun!! I highly recommend East Peak Climbing! Best climbing hub in the HRM and beyond!
Fantastic experience: I had a great experience climbing for the first time. The staff were very friendly and helpful!
Fantastic experience: Excellent climbing gym with amazing staff! Mostly rope climbing but also a bouldering wall and a small exercise room. They offer courses as well, and sell a small selection of equipment
Fantastic experience: Lots of fun and a great work out. It was our first time trying climbing and the staff was very helpful by walking us through a step by step orientation. We'll definitely be back.
Fantastic experience: Great facility and awesome staff!
Positive experience: It's a clean comfortable climbing gym for people of all climbing skills!
Fantastic experience: Love this place! Anyone that goes here will have a great time because the staff and community are amazing
Fantastic experience: Great facility and staff near local beer and sushi. Enjoyed the booking process as it limited the amount of people inside at once. Never felt too crowded.
Fantastic experience: Love it here!
Fantastic experience: Perfect starter for climbing
Positive experience: Great expeience but more workers to help people would be nice
Fantastic experience: It was an awesome experience, the crew there is awesome too
Fantastic experience: Unbelievably methodical and intentional route setting. Ben is a gem. Friendly staff, great vibes, fully loaded fitness area upstairs.
Positive experience: A very good experience. Especially for wanting to get into rock wall climbing. It is well air conditioned, they give a very good orientation for coming here. Only thing I didn't like was the lack of Clip In walls.
Fantastic experience: I had my first visit to East Peak Climbing today. I really enjoyed it. The climbing routes were fun and challenging but unfortunately the bouldering wall is small. Apart from being a great gym, what impressed me the most was how inclusive the staff are and how they approach their mission of building a community. They definitely made my first visit a memorable one. Please keep doing what you are doing because it's amazing.
Fantastic experience: Nice to have a quality rope climbing gym right in the city. Convenient location. Friendly staff, friendly climbers.
Fantastic experience: Awesome place
Fantastic experience: Great staff, loads of fun
Fantastic experience: Very friendly staff. It was a new experience in my life.
Fantastic experience: Great place, the staff are friendly and go above and beyond. The place is clean and comfortable. Definitely will be going back!
Fantastic experience: Great staff who help with orientation, and care.
Fantastic experience: It was an awesome experience, the crew there is awesome too
Fantastic experience: Great people!! Great atmosphere!
Fantastic experience: Awesome walls, great variety of route difficulties, the staff are so welcoming and kind. Very clean facilities and well equipped gym upstairs.
Fantastic experience: One of my favorite places in HRM!
Fantastic experience: Really enjoy it here! I've found there's a good mix of burly routes and more technical climbs. Also a decent range for newcomers and dedicated climbers.
Fantastic experience: Awesome place! I came in as a total beginner and they were extremely welcoming. Every member of staff is one of the friendliest and most helpful people you'll find anyway. Great routes and facilities. I'm sad I had to stop going (had to leave the city). Would highly recommend, and am grateful to the staff! Thanks!
Fantastic experience: Lots of fun without being too intimidating for a novice climber. The staff are incredibly friendly and ready to help. As with all climbing gyms it is expensive but probably comparable to yoga, and they're pretty good about having young kids climb if they can follow the rules.
Fantastic experience: Awesome establishment and great staff. They have a generous set of members hours, thoughtful routes and lots of lines if you get your top rope cert. Large recommendation if you're looking to get in shape
Fantastic experience: Ah-Mazing!! Great Staff! Awesome walls! Very informative and So much fun!!
Fantastic experience: Great new facility for rope climbers in Halifax :)
Fantastic experience: Best climbing gym around, both the staff and other climbers are super friendly
Fantastic experience: kids really enjoy going there; highly recommended!
Fantastic experience: Lots of climbing options for all levels. The staff are helpful and nice!
Fantastic experience: Large enough space and caring teachers. If you have the time visit during the week, weekends are crowded. My 3 years old daughter got hooked...
Fantastic experience: Unbelievably methodical and intentional route setting. Ben is a gem. Friendly staff, great vibes, fully loaded fitness area upstairs.
Fantastic experience: Awesome staff, super safety conscious. Impressed with the enforce of covid restrictions. I find the grading a bit on the low side compared to other gyms (I've climbed in Halifax, Montreal, Philadelphia and Calgary for comparison) but they take community input so that's good. All in all happy to climb there
Fantastic experience: Lots of fun. Good staff.
Negative experience: Needlessly strict/ unnaccomodating employee. I arrived 2 minutes after 9:00 and was turned away, couldn't climb with my friends.
Hi Liam, I am sorry to hear this was your experience! We do stop accepting new drop-ins at 9:00 pm our hours listed state we close at 9:00 pm to help avoid situations like yours. When a new climber comes to the facility they need to fill out a waiver, pay for their pass, get suited in their rental gear and do a 20 minute safety orientation with our staff, if this process is started after 9pm the safety orientation can be rushed and the climber does not have enough time to climb and get the full experience they paid for. This rule was set in place with safety and climber experience in mind , I sincerely apologize if the staff you dealt with did not explain this full and we do hope you come back and give us another chance during our regular business hours!
Positive experience: Very great facility, but routes setting need improvement, very much one burly style, very bouldery, which we do not need more in Hfx; to get the aesthetic of sport climbing more thoughts need to be given to foot placements. A bit disappointing, but I have faith it will get better...
Fantastic experience: Awesome gym in a great spot.
Fantastic experience: Had a great time at this gym. Staff were lovely and very helpful.
Fantastic experience: Lots of fun, friendly staff!
Fantastic experience: Excellent route setting, wonderful staff, and inviting atmosphere! Beautiful, modern climbing gym in a wonderfully preserved historic building. Thrilled to have a facility of this quality in Halifax. Thank you East Peak!
