Fantastic experience: Good size gym with lots of options from kid friendly sets to more technical/power moves for intermediate/advanced boulderers. Friendly atmosphere and overall a great experience.
Fantastic experience: An especially cozy, homey and chill climbing space. Its intimate and interesting layout is a favorite for our family. Also, I have auditory processing disorder and really appreciate that there is little to no echo in this space, making it easy to communicate with my kids.
Positive experience: Great place for all ages!! Pay once and go all day.. sometimes we go in the morning then go back after dinner (pay once)
Fantastic experience: Amazing place, great culture and people. As good a bouldering gym as I've seen anywhere on the island!
Negative experience: This place has a lot of potential. It used to take safety seriously, however in the past few years those standards have fallen. There are often young children left unsupervised, climbing the walls over and under other climbers. Staff members bring their own children during their shifts. It is nice to see the children, but not very safe since their parents let them run and scream all over the building.

Fantastic experience: I wish this was my local bouldering gym. Great community, great routes and the owner met me a year ago and still remembered my name! I miss a tight climbing community. I've got so many projects I want to go back and try I'm working on another trip out to the island just for that.

Fantastic experience: My daughter picked the Hangout as the location of her 7th birthday and the kids all had a great time. My daughter loved it so much we have been back multiple times and she now has a monthly membership. We've found the Hangout to be a very welcoming place for all ages and abilities. The staff are very friendly and happy to give guidance where needed.

Fantastic experience: This really is a nice little facility. It is perfect for all members of the family. Staff is friendly. At the end of October my grandson participated in a youth climbing competition. It was set up so all levels could experience success. Enjoyable to watch.

Fantastic experience: Really a cozy community gym. After you've been going for a while, you really get to know everyone. It vibes between dedicated crusher sessions and family fun for all ages with lots of little ones running around. While I do wish it had a taller wall to practice sport and lead, we do the best we can with what we had.

Believe me, we did the best we could (this was the tallest building in Duncan that we could find). Fantastic experience: This place is amazing they're always switching up the climbing lines to keep you interested. Additionally, they're super kid friendly, as well as, friendly to people who come at all hours. The gym section upstairs is also good if you don't want to climb. The prices here are super affordable and I reccomed checking it out to literally everyone in town!

Fantastic experience: I was nervous to start rock climbing as a woman in her 40’s in a larger body. I had no idea how I would be perceived going to a climbing gym. My daughter and I started with the ladies beginner class which was awesome! We couldn’t have been treated better! The staff at the hangout are so friendly and helpful and all of the people who go to climb are also kind and encouraging! I’ve never felt out of place or uncomfortable! My daughters and I love going many times a week! I highly recommend it! There are a variety of climbs for every climber!

Fantastic experience: Awesome gym! Great route setting - there is something for everyone, from the beginner climber to the experienced crusher. The autobelays are a great feature - they helped give me the confidence to try hard problems outside of my skill level, without worrying about (inevitably) falling. We are visiting from out of town and within minutes the staff made us feel as welcome as if this was our home gym. We had intended just a quick drop in visit but we ended up staying for hours - it's an aptly-named gym because it is a great place to Hangout!

Positive experience: It was nice. But it didn't have a standardized rating system for their routes also it didn't feel fun to climb
You have brought up an interesting point about route/problem grading, Walker. Others will likely be interested to know that we intentionally leave our auto belay routes ungraded and use a coloured circuit grading approach for our problems that is popular in many modern bouldering gyms today.While there is definitely an element of excitement in being able to feel like you're improving because you climbed a V4 when you could only previously climb a V3, it is difficult to standardize boulder problem grading across many different gyms within the same region, let alone the wider climbing community. Consequently, we have chosen to avoid overtly grading our climbs against the V-Scale or using a similar coloured circuit scale to other gyms on Vancouver Island. That said, if you ask around there is an informal comparison that some of the regulars/setters can tell you if you're curious how a "Blue Tag" climb in our gym compares to some of the grades at other Vancouver Island climbing gyms (even the V-Scale).

Fantastic experience: The Hangout is a top notch gym. The problems are unique, challenging, fun, AND accessible, a near impossible feat, and particularly beneficial for us shorty climbers. The mats are clean, well taken care of and comfortable for whenever you inevitably bail unexpectedly, and accidentally land on your side, butt, hip, hand, whatever body part suits you (wait, is that just a me thing?). On its second level is a nice open training area, which is especially nice if you are easily distracted (myself included), and get self conscious every once in a while. I can't comment too much on the community itself given that I've only been a few times, but the owners are exceedingly kind, warm, encouraging, and engaging. I'm almost 100% sure the rest of the community follows. Thanks for the climb!

Fantastic experience: My family and I have been members at The Hangout for a few months now and we absolutely love it. My children (2 and 5) both have plenty of options on the kids wall and top rope wall and there is more than enough to challenge both me and my wife as we learn and progress. Both kids are noticeably more capable and confident both in the gym and outside (playgrounds, etc.) than before we started. The routes change often enough to keep things fresh and are very well executed. The staff are super friendly and supportive and keep the gym very clean. Overall it's a great atmosphere and I highly recommend checking it out.

Hi there, thanks for the question. Becoming a member is rather simple. After you have created an account and signed a waiver, it's simply a matter of requesting a membership pass from the front desk staff instead of a day pass. If you plan to climb more than once a week then the membership is definitely the best option price-wise. If you don't have equipment, it's included. If you need advice, someone will definitely be happy to help if you're brave enough to ask.If your question is more along the lines of how do you become included in the inner circle of members?The simplest response is that the more you come and the more you introduce yourself to the other climbers, the more likely it is that a member will befriend you and introduce you to the other regular members. In as little as three weeks you can have more friends at Hangout than you could make in three years anywhere else.On an unrelated note, I as I am typing this review I hear the Beatles playing on the gym's speakers. Given your name, I suspect you'll like it here a lot.
