Our comment from FitFit Canada about YMCA of Brandon:
The YMCA of Brandon is a modern and well-maintained facility that offers great value for both families and fitness enthusiasts. Users appreciate the friendly staff and the cleanliness of the environment.
- Positive Aspects:
- Well-kept facilities with a good selection of exercise machines and dedicated spaces for classes.
- Excellent pool with a lazy river and a water slide, ideal for family fun.
- Friendly and helpful staff who create a welcoming atmosphere.
- Reasonable membership prices, especially for the number of amenities available, including free classes.
However, there are some areas for improvement:
- Inconsistent cleanliness in certain areas, particularly the locker and changing rooms.
- Some users reported challenges with customer service and unprofessional staff behavior.
- Operational issues with amenities like the hot tub and steam room being frequently out of order.
- A need for better enforcement of swim time policies and security measures during family swim times.
Overall, the YMCA of Brandon is regarded as a solid choice for a gym and swimming facility, maintaining a good balance between family and fitness needs.
YMCA of Brandon: Opinions
Positive experience: The pool is ok the the only part I like about the shallow end is that you can play better and there is a lazy river also please make the deep end deeper it's shallower than the sportplex one
Positive experience: Good pool. Staff seem good. Facility well kept. The universal change room has no way for disabled people to sit while they shower, which means if you can't stand or have trouble standing then you can't shower before or after swimming. Lots of good machines upstairs for workout the redesign means everything isn't cramed together anymore.it's very nice. Dedicated rooms to classes and large areas for stretching/warmup.
Fantastic experience: For all the amenities avaliable you can not beat the price. Such friendly staff. Always clean. Its never over full and so many useful programs. I would stick with the regular pass the premium side is always busy and I found i was waiting for my locker. Great atmosphere to be a part of.
Fantastic experience: Very good place
Fantastic experience: I disagree with the negative reviews here. I’ve only found the staff to be friendly and the cleanliness is great. It’s the most well balanced facility in the city.
Negative experience: Recently the condition of the locker and swimsuit changing area has become extremely unpleasant. The smell of urine is overwhelming — it honestly made me feel nauseous the last time I was there. It’s not just a faint smell either; it’s strong and persistent, like someone hasn’t cleaned properly in a long time. I’m not sure if this is due to certain promotions or free access being provided to groups who might not be familiar with proper facility use, but if that’s the case, perhaps some orientation or guidance would help. Regardless, regular cleaning and better hygiene enforcement are absolutely necessary. It's getting to the point where it feels unsanitary and frankly unacceptable. I really hope management takes this seriously.
Fantastic experience: After going to lots of different YMCA's across Canada this is by far my favourite. One of the cleanest locker rooms, great steam room in the members, fitness equipment was well taken care of and Micah at the front desk was always a pleasure to run in to.
Negative experience: This is the worst business I’ve ever experienced. Here’s why: 1. The staff are extremely unprofessional and lack any customer service skills whatsoever. They are quicker to fight with you than help you. 2.The policy to need photo ID to go swimming is a joke and accomplishes nothing in the way of safety (which I’m guessing is what they tell themselves it’s for). 3. They take pictures of your kids for their “database” which is a serious problem in today’s world. Not to mention that I don’t want a staff that acts so unprofessional having access to pictures of my kids. 4. The prices are completely uncompetitive to the point where you’ll pay twice what you would anywhere else despite getting way less value. 5. The facility is never clean and doesn’t give you confidence to bring your kids.
Negative experience: My husband forgot his ID and only realized when we got here to swim with our two little kids on a hot day. They were no help at all saying that "it's their policy". They were more than happy to charge me the family rate so I could go in at try to look after my baby and toddler alone. Ridiculous. Even offered to show the the vehicle registration or manitoba health card for proof of ID. Nope. Nothing. Sucks that you drove 1.5 hours with your two kids to go swimming. They turned us away. Awful place. I have never had to show ID anywhere to go swimming. Will never be back.
Fantastic experience: Zumba
Positive experience: Overall a great facility with really nice and helpful staff, clean change rooms and a decently equipped gym upstairs. The only reason this is 3 instead of 5 is because of my last trip where an incredibly rude staff member came into the men's change room, right after I had finished drying off and changing in one of the showers, and yelled at me to, "read the sign," and told me that, "you do NOT do that here." I had no idea what he was talking about, and I can't see anything without my glasses so I asked him what sign he was talking about and what the problem was and he just approached me and repeated it. After some incredibly hostile communication I finally realized that the issue was that there is a sign telling you to dry off from the pool in the shower area before entering the locker room so it stays dry for other people, and I always keep it as dry as possible anyways. I had walked from the showers to my locker to grab my towel before going back to dry off (how else am I suppose to get my towel, am I suppose to leave it in one of the public showers or just on a bench in the open somewhere???). My locker was as close to the showers as was available when I checked in, and I had only briefly walked in to grab my towel and then dried in the shower area. I do not know what else you are supposed to do when drying off from the pool. This has never been an issue before so I've just chalked it up to a freak accident with an employee who was having a bad day, but that employee's incredibly rude manners and hostility are why this is just a 3 star review. Everything else about this YMCA is 5 star, just beware of incredibly wound up employees when grabbing your towel from your locker.
Negative experience: Went today with our young kids during the "family swim time". They absolutely did not enforce this time for families only. Additionally, we had an uncomfortable encounter with a male in street clothes standing by the door watching my children swim. I did confront him, and notified the life guard who unfortunately was sitting out of site of the male. Life guard told me he thought the male was on a tour of the facility, and had left, and didn't notice he was still there. But there were also no employees with him providing the "tour". Poor security measures. Disappointed their own swim times were not honored. For the price we paid, and everything that has been recently uncovered in Brandon, I will be more leary about bringing my kids back. Positive is the pool/water slide area is nice.
Negative experience: On January 11th about 5pm My family and I have been treated poorly at the gym. Staff and Supervisor doesn't know how to deal with customers. If you are reading this, please stay away from Brandon downtown YMCA. It is not worth!
Negative experience: I guess canceling doesn’t matter. They still charged you plus interest. Like all corporations do fack you over.
Negative experience: A female Life gaude works here today (chubby one wears pink slipper) seems like racist , she doesn’t ask questions to any other races people but only focus on my kids EVERY SINGLE TIME, even kids sit on the edge of the leisure pool waiting people complete 7:30 pm swimming lessons she still came to my kids and said they can’t sit there . I want to know WHAT IS THE PROBLEM TO SIT ON THE EDGE OF THE LEISURE POOL AND WAIT 20 MINS !!! She doesn’t have the guts to ask any other coloured person. Every time we come here she always talking to another lifeguard, EVERY TIME! No wonder so many people have bad reviews here and I don’t see manager or supervisor solve anyone’s complaint. Very bad experience!
Negative experience: We visit Sunday at YMCA. "Had a disappointing experience at the front desk. The staff member was unclear and seemed unsure of the information being provided. It left me feeling unsatisfied with the service."
Negative experience: staff is so rude there, so me and my friends were just working out, this staff comes up to us and threatens to kick us out because we are “too young” when we were passed at the age of 13 , she kept spying on us and she came up to us multiple times when we were at the workout stations, telling us we could only use the treadmill, this was such a waste of time, 10$ just to use the treadmill?! such a waste of money. I am not going there until i look 30 years old
Fantastic experience: Staff here are extremely helpful and friendly. They enforce the rules kindly and will spot you and give advice when asked making it a great place to lift (clean and weights reracked!) They also regularly invest into the gym keeping things repaired and up to date. New workout items, more plates and benches, and occasional new machines. Praying for a hack squat next!! Only con is the steam room is extremely hit and miss. Other steam rooms I've visited have consistent thick steam. This one is often is clear as day with short intervals of steam. Overall very worth the membership!!
Negative experience: What a terrible experience today. Walked up to the front desk and said we were there for public swim and he said it isn’t on for another hour, after checking with 2 other employees it was indeed on for the time I arrived. It’s $38 for a family of 4 to go swimming (which is outrageous), even when the public swim is cut short for swimming lessons. YOU NEED PHOTO ID TO GET IN. We’re in from Alberta, what if we forgot it??? I scoured the website and couldn’t find that anywhere. If they were that serious about the ID, have it plastered everywhere online. The lad at the front was useless as 2/6 forgot their ID at home and he wouldn’t accept a photo of it. A half hour in, we’re still standing there holding up the line while people are just walking past, not even scanning anything. So we paid almost $40 for an hour of swimming. Oh and don’t use the gender neutral change rooms as they are filthy and reeked of urine.
Negative experience: Pools stuff never friendly and don't have skills with children. Never recommend it
Negative experience: If you're looking for a gym with a hot tub or steam room, don't go to the YMCA. Both are "out of order" more often than not.
Fantastic experience: Great
Fantastic experience: Very clean , fast and friendly staff, very helpful Awesome pool, nice water slide
Fantastic experience: Great
Negative experience: its sham place with money on their mind and very rude staff . 1 star because can not give negative.don't recommend to any one
Positive experience: Great facility, Great staff, just wish the hot tub and steam room could consistently be operational.
Positive experience: Just wish the hot tub wasn’t constantly closed…
Positive experience: turn up the temp of your pools !! cant enjoy it while youre freezing to death
Fantastic experience: If you’re in Brandon for a bit and looking for something better than your hotel gym.. check out the YMCA. Reasonable 2 week/monthly memberships, great selection of equipment and friendly atmosphere.
Negative experience: YMCA,especially in brandon is more of a greedy for profit organization. Their fees is as expensive and more so than local gyms and gym franchises. It isn't 24/7, and has opening hours so limited, for working persons at 9-5 and weekends, even worst with family. There swimming pool policies enforced by their staff who are mainly teenagers and under 20. And so inconsistent and untruthful when enforcing what they say are policies. We weren't allowed to use most of the pool. Suddenly one side was closed and then open depending on who you asked. Every year they hike the membership fees. Spend your money at other guys and dont donate here, its being poorly used.
Fantastic experience: My favourite time slot is the 9-10 am classes - they are the best. Great instructors , lots of variety & fun group of exercisers.
Negative experience: Staff was awful not at all helpful or knowledgeable. People steal from locked lockers, if you are 18 you HAVE to show ID. Smelled discusting and was dirty. Not worth the money.
Positive experience: Starting to be disappointed in managements real property maintenance. Men’s shower has been broken for 6months +, the steam room starts to feel like it breaks ever 2nd/3rd months and takes couple of weeks to repair. The shower outside of the pool has been broken multiple times and has taken long periods to fix. 2 water fountains are broken, the roof seems to have leaks ever since it has opened. Paint is peeling in the gym. Please tell me why I’m paying full price for a membership? The crew working are pretty good though :)
Negative experience: I can’t recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a gym or would like to improve any skills. This is a leisure establishment for people and families who are looking at getting out of their houses and/or want some distraction. Nothing wrong with that, but they need to update their website and description. Or at least be very upfront when people sign up. Other low points: the staff needs a 360 training course, from customer service to basic operational skills. They insist on posting their hours wrong - they close 30 mins earlier every single day. Claiming that “the building” closes at the announced hours is just misleading and silly. They also have extremely short hours and during summer they change to even shorter. All that for more money than other similar facilities. Children are allowed in areas where they shouldn’t - for safety and for other members consideration. There’s no one to even walk you through the equipment. Any other place that doesn’t offer that would definitely take that off the membership cost.
Negative experience: I do NOT recommend the 'Y'. They keep photos of your child on file!! Along with names and birthdays!! Child protection they say.
Fantastic experience: Love the Y - have been a member and volunteer for a long time. Tons of variety offered and wonderful staff.
Positive experience: Love the steam room and the mens club area! Best steam room I have ever been to! Love how it can be manually turned on and off and isn't run automatically off a thermometer.
Positive experience: Excellent environment for working out, a good selection of cardio equipment and a nice looking pool, good kids activities. Only lacking a crossfit area.
Fantastic experience: I have nothing but positive things to say about the ymca. I’ve been going to workout consistently for a few months now and got to know some people both who work out and work there. The one person I’ve talked to so far. Drew. Has a wide amount of experience and knowledge working out and has helped me with so many different things with working out I will be in his debt for a while.as-well as the actual people who go there. I’ve had almost all positive experiences with them and have built a few friendships. The ymca is a place I go when I’m happy, sad, mad, anxious, and I always leave with a smile on my face. The equipment is great, facilities are amazing. And I have lots of great experience there now and I will hold that experience dear for many years to come. 5/5.
Positive experience: Awesome place, I guess my reason for a 4/5 rating is my disappointment in not be allowed to take pictures in the pool area. I would love to be able to have memories of my grandaughter in swim lessons. I’m not there to take pictures of other kids, just my own. Pretty disappointing
We apologize. This is a rule we have that supports the privacy of our participants, and our child protection policies.
Positive experience: The facility is great: it is clean, quite inviting, features plenty of kids and adults activities. However, I wish the front desk people could take a customer service course. Even wearing a mask, you can tell if you are greeted warmly or not. The front desk people can make a huge difference when they really care about their customers, not only if you swiped your card. Definitely room for improvement and training.
Fantastic experience: Best place for a workout and a swim. You will love the YMCA come down for pickel ball and a steallm has everything you could possibly need .
Fantastic experience: best place for swimming in brandon. really i enjoy much while I workout there.
Fantastic experience: The staff are so friendly and always have a kind word and smile. These people try hard everyday to give us the best place to work out.
Negative experience: I would never recommend this place every in my life im gonna drag your name through the mud.
Negative experience: BUNCH OF BS ..Non profit bs ... they denied me access to use my membership and have been taking money out of may account long after they deactivated my account... refused to refund me
Negative experience: Not a respectful place to workout. Staff is rude and ill mannered. No parking available at any time. Gym area is always dirty. Left my membership today after series of mis management issues in last 3 consecutive months.
Negative experience: Almost a year since last here. Last time present my child received electric shock from a broken motion sensing light switch in the family change area after being accidentally locked in the bathroom. While locked in, staff had no clue on how to open the door. The shock was reported and staff made aware of the problem after the child made it out. Today upon returning for a family swim, happened to use the same bathroom. Switch still broken allowing for children or adults to insert their wet fingers into a live electrical circuit box. How is this kind of neglect even possible
We apologize. This will be looked into immediately.
Negative experience: Poorly placed treadmills, not enough benches or free weights or squat racks. Rude staff and you are not able to scan in, you always have to waste time going to front desk.
Negative experience: Over the past few years, I have been dropping in here for a workout when I'm visiting Brandon. However, even though I've been dropping in for about 5 years, this past visit to Brandon, I was not allowed in the facility because I didn't have my Alberta Photo ID, even though I'm in the computer system. Well, I guess I won't be dropping in any more, but it saves me $14 or $15 because drop in is very expensive anyway and when I was 'kicked out' I went to the Sportsplex which was very nice and only $7.50, so it all worked out.
Fantastic experience: Best overall gym in Brandon great facility. Newly constructed usually nice to go in the mornings when it's less busy
Positive experience: Nice place but no body will help you out in figuring how to use the tools there.
Positive experience: Overall a good place, however, I paid for a trainer for my son and it cost me $200.00 and the trainer only spent one session with my son and didn't bother to follow up with him afterwards and never heard from him again
Negative experience: I have not had the best experience here and really disappointed in how they handle situations where your child gets injured. Very disappointed.
Negative experience: Love the gym but today the worker couldn't even help me with one of the machines and last time I went I asked for help on how to learn how to use a machine properly and he told me that's not his job.... He was behind the desk just not doing anything, also I noticed today that the shower curtains were very moldy on the ends.... I love the front desk workers they are very polite but being up in the gym is just not as comfy as I would like ALSO it was $8.00 for a day pass which the gym closed at 6 because it was Sunday. So I would have thought it would have been cheaper .I would try a different gym but this is the only one with daycare.
Negative experience: I was a member of this gym for years. I left because it was $18 a month more expensive plus had awful hours. Parking wasn’t the best. It’s kind of hectic with kids running around and using equipment inappropriately. I like that there is a pool and lots of equipment tho. The classes are good but they usually start before the times posted.
Positive experience: Polite and friendly staff, gym is a bit busy but they had a sufficient amount of gym equipment to keep a constant selection.
Fantastic experience: Great setup no nude sauna tho :(
Fantastic experience: WiFi is great today
Fantastic experience: Have an wide verity of equipments and activities!!
Fantastic experience: Nice space. The lane pool is actually cooler than Y pools I know which makes it great for workouts. The pool side tiles have an interesting non-slippery texture which is nice for pushing off the wall. The fitness room is clean and well-provisioned.
Fantastic experience: Love it here water is nice and they have a hot tube.
Negative experience: If you're looking for a gym with a hot tub or steam room, don't go to the YMCA. Both are "out of order" more often than not.
Negative experience: Public swim is later than i expected it to be
Positive experience: Love the facility. Love their business goals. I truly admire how they keep so many kids active and busy. I, myself, as a more serious lifter, still find many many ways to keep myself challenged in their facility. And when I'm done my workouts, there's always the pool or steam room to help relax. My only dislike is how much space they gave to the free weight area. Dumbbells DO go up to 100, which is nice. However there is four benches total in an area maybe 30 feet wide. And it's often waaayyy overcrowded. So much so that I can't get in.

Fantastic experience: i love working out and swimming.
Fantastic experience: Love it!
Negative experience: OK. I saw,uh,two female lifeguards, sneaking around, harassing customers.
Fantastic experience: Absolutely awesome deep water runnu g on Thursday evenings!
Fantastic experience: The YMCA of Brandon is a modern facility that has been recently built in the City of Brandon. The old building has been a long time fixture for the City, however it was recently rebuilt with many upgrades. It has a pool with a slide, hot tub, and a sauna. The fitness facility has many treadmills, excercise bikes, and two row machines. Additionally, it has a good amount of free weights as well as resistance training machines. It also has a gymnasium for court sports. The YMCA offers excellent value for the membership price. It offers access to all its facilities and even includes free participation in class programs such as yoga, aqua fit, and others. The YMCA continues to be a fixture of the community offering excellent value for families and fitness enthusiasts.
Fantastic experience: It's amazing I love the steam room and how they provide life jackets for children...I also like how they provide toys too:)!!
